Home of Savannah Hayes – Evening –

Savannah was still awake when Derek got into bed and like every other night, she pretended to be asleep while he turned his back to her and settled in. There were nights when he would toss and turn for hours before drifting off; then there were other nights when he whispered the woman's name in his sleep.

She'd heard the one-sided conversation from the hallway as he tried in vain to muffle his voice; but it was loud enough to make it quite clear that he was in love with someone else. He was here with her out of some twisted sense of obligation and guilt. Savannah had played along with Kevin's plan until he crossed the line and even now, she was keeping up a lie about their engagement. There was only one way out of this situation, one that would leave her labeled a liar; humiliated and without the man she loved...she couldn't sleep.

Office of Arthur Fleck, Ph.D – Morning –

Derek sat patiently in the waiting room. He dreaded the sessions with the bureau shrink but it was the only way he'd be able to get back to work full-time. So, this was appointment number 3 and maybe it would be the charm necessary to get the okay to get back into the field.

"Derek Morgan."

He stood and followed the pleasant looking woman down the hall. Nodding, he stepped passed her into the office and took a seat. A few minutes later, the familiar face of Dr. Arthur Fleck entered.

"Agent Morgan."

Dr. Fleck shook Derek's hand before taking the seat across from him.

"So, how have you been?" Dr. Fleck asked as he thumbed through his notes.

"Never better." Derek answered.

Dr. Fleck smiled. He was quite familiar with the BAU profiler. He knew that most of the questions and answers to his questions had been written by him and his team. He also knew that Derek would say and do anything it took not to be here. So, the good doctor had to be careful to pay attention to what Derek didn't say more than what he did.

"Good. I see this is our third session together. How's your memory?"

"I still have a few holes but for the most part I'm good."

"I'm proud of the work you've put in. Honestly agent, I've been waiting for you to try and finesse your way out of our sessions."

"Don't think I haven't thought about it."

The two chuckled before the doctor went on.

"What are you still having problems with?"

"My personal life is still a bit of a mystery. I don't feel as if I belong in whatever world Savannah has created for the two of us."

"Hmm..."

Hmm...Derek hated, hmmm. It seemed to always lead to the doctor scribbling on his notepad.

"Do you feel you're ready to go back to work?"

Derek exhaled and the events of the last months flashed through his mind - the case in New York and the accident. Then he thought of Penelope, the woman who'd saved his life and then showed him what real love looked like, finally he thought about the life he'd returned to and he couldn't help but feel as if he'd surrendered to the familiar that was no longer familiar.

"Honestly Doc, I don't know."

Home of Penelope Garcia – 1 month later –

Penelope was tired of feeling run down and she had to admit that she was in denial about why she felt so horrible, especially in the mornings. Smells of certain foods had her running to the bathroom and her emotions were all over the place.

Now here she was, with her big girl panties pulled up to her chin, ready to pee on a stick. She looked in the mirror of her tiny bathroom, exhaled and opened one of the three boxes sitting on the counter.

Five minutes later she was sitting on the edge of the bathtub, terrified and not ready to see her truth. Was she ready to be a mother raising a child alone? What would Derek think if he knew? She wouldn't demand anything from him...perhaps she wouldn't tell him at all. Slowly, she looked down at her shaking hand.

"Oh my God...I'm pregnant."

Langston's Brewery – Afternoon –

Fran had agreed to meet her son for lunch. She was worried about him. As time went by, he'd become distant and his relationships with his family and his friends had not improved since being back for nearly two months. Her mother bear instincts were telling her that something was wrong.

Derek smiled when he saw his mother come through the door. The hostess led her to his table, and he greeted her with a warm hug.

"Hey Ma."

"How are you doing?"

"I'm doing."

The two talked for the next several minutes between their orders being taken and their food being brought to the table. Fran knew that her son was avoiding any serious topics especially his life with Savannah.

"So how long are you going to play this game with me?" She asked.

"Excuse me?"

"You know what I'm talking about. You've been back for two months and you're more distant now than when you were lost in the middle of nowhere. What's going on with you Derek?"

He couldn't avoid her questions any longer and he wasn't sure he wanted to.

"I remember everyone, and everything; my job, you and the girls but..."

"But what?"

"It's Savannah. She says we had a great relationship and that I'd proposed, she's even wearing a ring."

Fran set her fork down and wiped the corners of her mouth with her white linen napkin. She was a woman, and she knew the games that women played to get what they wanted.

"Maybe you don't remember because it's not true." Fran offered.

"Are you saying that Savannah's lying?"

"I'm saying you've remembered everything except what she's told you. A happy relationship and an engagement are wonderful things to have; why wouldn't those memories return?"

"Ma, she saved my life; she took a bullet for me. I..."

"You think you owe her, is that what you're about to say?"

"I owe her my life, Ma."

"Derek, please believe me, I am grateful for what she did, I am but Savannah played a part in what happened to you. Yes, she saved your life but if she hadn't suddenly gotten a conscious, she would have had a part in your death. So, before you decide to sacrifice your life for her just remember that."

"Ma..."

"No Derek, ask her when and how you proposed. If you purchased a ring, then there must be a paper trail."

"Damn Ma, you sound like Dave."

"I don't know about that, but what I do know is that there is someone else that has your heart, am I right?"

"Yeah."

"Don't you think you owe her and owe yourself the truth; the whole truth?"

"I tried talking to her, but she told me not to call her back."

"Do you love her, son?"

"Yes, I love her."

"Then try again. If you really love her, then she's worth it."
