Chapter 14
"That was fun Dean, and thanks for the help with the game," Dom told him as they drove back to the salvage yard.
"No problem kid, you're not that bad, just plan your shots and practice," Dean replied. He drew in a long breath and let it out slowly.
"Is there something you want to talk about Dean?" Dom asked sensing a change in Dean.
Dean swallowed several times and licked his lips before answering him.
"I'm worried about Sammy," Dean finally got out.
"About what? His powers? Or something else?"
"I'm not sure. I think it has to do with his powers, but I don't know." Dean pulled over to the side of the road after he got on the one for the salvage yard and put the car in park and killed the engine. He sat there gripping the steering wheel as he tried to sort through his thoughts and make sense of them.
"Take your time Dean, it's fine," Dom assured him as he turned to face Dean waiting for him to continue. He did not try to press him wanting to let him take his own time.
"The last couple of hunts we were on, Sammy had to go all out using his powers, the last one he saved my life. Afterwards, he seemed so drained and weak and it took him days to recoup from it. Is this normal? Is something wrong with him that I need to be concerned about?"
"You have to remember Dean, Sam is still a beginner in opening up to his powers and using them. There may be some ups and downs as his body adjusts to them and what it takes to use them. I'd say, keep an eye on him and see if it continues. If it does seem to continue, let me know and I will talk to him," Dom suggested. "I can also take Sam to see Mama Rues again and see if she can help. She is a strong in the spiritual way and has more experience than anyone else I know, beside my Grams. You know Sam might feel more comfortable talking to her if he needs too. You can too if you feel like it. I know Mama Rues would be willing to help."
"Thanks, I'll think about that, and Dom, don't say anything to Sammy about our talk okay?" Dean sighed feeling some of his anxiety and worry fall away for now. He shook his body and drew in some cleansing breaths before cranking the Impala and pulling back onto the road to head on to the salvage yard. He was going to do what Dom suggested and keep a watchful eye on Sam when he had to use his powers and see if it happened again.
"I won't Dean, this is between us," Dom assured him. He would keep his word and not mention this conversation to Sam.

"Hey, have a good time?" Sam asked when Dean and Dom walked into the living room. He was watching an old movie on Bobby's antique television, waiting for them to get back. Bobby had already gone to bed because he needed to do a parts run the next day and needed to get an early start.
"It was good. Got some pointers on how to improve my pool game," Dom told him.
"He's not that bad really, just needed a few tips," Dean added. "What are you watching?"
"An old classic detective movie."
"That's my cue to go to bed," Dean snorted. "See you two in the morning." Dean headed to the stairs and made his way up them, stopping at the bathroom first to do his routine before heading to his bedroom to get ready for bed.
Dom took a seat on the couch with Sam and looked at the screen of the television to see what movie Sam was watching. He was going to head to bed too but could tell Sam wanted to talk to him and was waiting for Dean to leave.
"Did Dean say anything to you while you were out?" Sam asked him.
Dom looked over a Sam and chose his words carefully, not wanting to break his word to Dean.
"I think things are okay Sam. You don't need to worry."
"That's good, so Dean doesn't have a problem with me using my powers."
"No, he never said anything like that."
"Thanks," Sam said. He relaxed back into the couch and focused on the television as the movie came back on.
Dom could feel the tension leave Sam and was glad he did not ask further questions about Dean. He did not want to lie to Sam, but he could not betray Dean's trust either. He sat on the couch for another twenty minutes before biding Sam goodnight and heading upstairs for bed.
Sam finished watching the movie before heading for bed. He actually felt tired now and thought he could get some needed rest. He did his bathroom routine and quietly walked into his bedroom, seeing Dean had left the lamp on that sat between their beds on a nightstand. He changed clothes and slipped into his bed, settling down into the mattress before turning the lamp off. He lay there in the dark and listened to the sounds around him picking out the familiar and being sure the odd ones were nothing to worry about. He could hear Dean's soft snores coming from the other bed before he grunted and mumbled and turned over to his side, making Sam smile. He let his eyes drift closed and his breathing even out as he slipped away into Neverland.

The following week went by much too fast for everyone. Dean showed off his cooking skill by grilling out several nights and Dom even got in on the fun making one of his grandmother's recipes for them. Dean was a little skeptical at first, but after the first bite, he was hooked.
The guys and Dom took some time to help Bobby around the salvage yard. They loaded crushed vehicles to sell for scrap metal, cleaned out one of the buildings for storage, and mowed the grass and cleared the worst of the weeds from the yard. Dom and Dean washed and waxed their cars and even Bobby's tow truck, because the old gal deserved it. Dean changed the oil for Dom in his car. Unfortunately, Sam got the brunt of their teasing by being soaked to the skin when he tried to help with the washing of the vehicle.
Dom trained Sam on his abilities every day and he was getting better at hearing people's thoughts and actually put one in Dean's head which surprised Sam. He did not breathe a word about it to Dean when he decided to watch a sappy movie he would otherwise not watch. They even went into town to see a movie one night. They played poker until Dean decided Dom and Sam were cheating and stopped the game because he was losing badly. Dean set up the horseshoe game outside and they tried to best each other by seeing who could get the most ringers.
Dom and Bobby spent several evening exchanging information and knowledge about the supernatural and hunting. Dom browsed Bobby's collection of books and found some to read and study. He showed Bobby a few of his that he carried with him that were passed down to him from other family members. They both gained new knowledge and insight.
It was early evening after diner and Sam was searching the internet for a case while waiting on their clothes to dry. Dom and he were doing laundry so they would have all clean clothes when they left. He knew it was time to leave because Dean was getting restless and needed to hunt. Dean had already hinted that they should probably head out the following day. Sam bookmarked a couple of articles that sounded promising and sat back rubbing his tired eyes. He heard the ding of the dryer and pushed up from the chair to go fold the last load of clothes. Dean and Dom were in Bobby's office talking to him about some random thing and he did not feel like joining them and decided to go on to bed now that the laundry was done.
Sam carried the folded clothes through the living room, stopping at the doorway to the office to let them know he was heading on to bed and would see them in the morning. They told him goodnight before going back to talking about a hunt. Sam headed up the stairs and dropped the clothes off in the bedroom before going to the bathroom to do his nightly routine. Once he was done, he changed clothes and separated the laundry before turning his bed down and slipping into it to relax into the mattress. He let his mind roam as he drifted off to sleep.

The next morning was overcast as the brothers and Dom got ready to leave. They were having breakfast in the kitchen before they left.
"So, where are you heading?" Dean asked Dom.
"Not sure, found a possible case in Texas I might check out and go from there," Dom replied. "How about you two? You find anything that caught your eye Sam?"
"Yeah, maybe," Sam said after swallowing the food he was chewing. "There's maybe two different cases we can look into in Colorado. The towns are about four hours apart so if one doesn't pan out, we can check out the other one."
"Doubling up are we Sammy?" Dean teased.
"Just being prepared," Sam replied.
"I'm gonna miss all you boys," Bobby told them getting up and taking his dirty dishes to the sink. "It was good to have you around this week."
"We'll try to get by more often Bobby," Dean told him as he popped the last bite of toast into his mouth.
"I'll be heading out too. Got a call from a hunter friend that wants some back up on a hunt."
"We'll get these dishes done and the kitchen cleaned before we leave," Sam told him. He got up and went to the sink with his dishes. Sam filled the sink with hot water and got the detergent from under the sink, squirting it into the hot water. He sat the dirty dishes in the water as the sink filled and shut the water off to begin washing the dishes.
"I'll rinse and dry," Dom offered coming to stand by Sam and wait as he washed the dishes.
Dean got up and brought them his dishes and grabbed a damp dish towel to wipe the table, stove, and counters off and put away what needed to go in the fridge.
"I'll start putting our things in the car," Dean told them before heading into the living room and grabbing their bags that were sitting near the door. He headed out the door and to his car to put them in the trunk.
It did not take long for Sam and Dom to finish the dishes and met Dean in the living room as Bobby was coming from his bedroom with a couple of bags.
"Guess we're all heading out," Sam sighed already missing their time together.
"You boys take care and be careful out there," Bobby cautioned them, giving each a brief hug.
"We will Bobby, you do the same," Dean told him. "You know you're not getting any younger…"
"I can still whip yer sorry ass," Bobby growled at him as he pulled into a bear hug.
"Thank you for your hospitality Bobby and the information," Dom told Bobby, letting him hug him too.
"You come back anytime, son. My door is always open," Bobby said.
"I appreciate it and I'll keep that in mind if I am near."
They headed out the door with Bobby last. He paused to lock the door behind him.
"It was fun kid," Dean told Dom as they headed for their cars. "You know how to get in touch if you need help on a case."
"I do and the same goes for you too. I'm a phone call away," Dom said shaking his hand before turning to Sam. "Keep in touch and we'll get together again soon."
"Thanks for the training and I'll do that."
"Don't hesitate to call me about anything, or reach out to me this way, even for practice," Dom whispered in Sam's head as he shook his hand and butted shoulders.
"I will and thanks for everything," Sam whispered back.
"Safe travels everyone," Bobby called as he got in his car to drive away.
"You ready Sammy?" Dean asked him as he looked over the top of the car at him.
Sam looked toward the house one more time and over at Dom as he got into his car. He gave a wave before turning to Dean to reply.
"Yeah, I'm ready," he nodded.
They got in the car and Dean cranked his Baby, letting her roar to life and settle into a loud rumble. He pulled down the driveway and glanced in the rearview mirror as Dom fell in behind him. They head for the interstate where Dom went right, and the brothers went left off to check out possible cases.
Dean picked up the interstate and settled into traffic to head for Colorado. He glanced over at Sam who was randomly staring out the windshield and thought he looked better and hoped his worries were for nothing. He would keep a close eye on him to be sure he was okay. He could feel the seed of excitement building to be heading for a possible hunt. He was a natural hunter, had been since he started so long ago and now, he was even more seasoned and experienced. This was his life, and he was going to live it to the fullest and take care of his little brother.
