No 14. Fire (435 words)
The building was on fire, something was messing with his bionics, and Chase had no idea which way was out. The flames around him grew higher and hotter by the second. The thick smoke forcing him down on his knees. Coughs erupted from him with burning intensity. As hopeless as it seemed, Chase kept crawling. What other choice did he have?
Soon enough though, another couching sent him sprawling down on the floor. Pushing himself back up on his knees, Chase fell right back down. He couldn't do it, he didn't have any energy left.
"...help..."
He tried to call out but he could barely hear it himself. The air around him seemed to burn at his skin. His eyes filled with tears as more coughs scraped through his throat.
The last thing Chase remembered is someone shouting his name before darkness claimed him.
-X-
The next time Chase opened his eyes it was like finally being able to breathe after being submerged in water. He was propped up against something soft and the heat was gone. Fresh, smoke-free air streamed in and out of his lungs. Although it hurt as it passed through his parched throat it was a blessing like no other.
"-hase? You back with us?"
Mr. Davenport's blurry face filled his vision as he picked up on the man's voice. Chase nodded slowly, blinking the world into clarity once more. Mr. Davenport's shoulders sagged in relief as he clasped a gentle hand on Chase's arm.
"Here, drink some water," his father instructed and Chase wrapped his shaking fingers around the offered bottle. He had to force himself to take it slow. It was hard to when the water felt so cool running down his throat. It hurt a little, almost burned, but this time it was a welcomed feeling.
"We're lucky Adam found you when he did," Mr. Davenport mumbled, and Chase wasn't entirely sure the man had actually meant for him to hear it.
"I'm- I'm okay," Chase said, although his voice sounded anything but. Mr. Davenport gave him a tight smile before looking up over Chase's head.
"Come on, let's get home and make sure he really is," the man prompted. That's when Chase realized that the soft thing he was leaning against wasn't a thing at all but actually his older brother. Adam rose to his feet, easily bringing Chase up in his arms before the younger boy even had the chance to consider protesting.
Not that he really wanted to. The warmth of his brother was so much nicer than the heat of the flames had been.
