Meanwhile, back at the hospital, Miguel is asleep in his bed. Without a word of warning, Rosa, Miguel's grandmother (or Yaya) enters the room and stands by Miguel's bed.
"Miguel!", says Rosa.
Despite his grandmother calling out to him, Miguel is passed out. Rosa goes closer to Miguel's ear, where it is close enough to whisper.
Before she can say anything, Carmen enters the room and sees Rosa.
"Mama, what are you doing here?" asks Carmen.
"Vino a ver a Miggy" (Came to see Miggy), says Rosa.
"I'll be done in a minute, just wait here".
Before Carmen leaves, Miguel begins to grunt and wakes up slowly, squeezing his eyes and opens blinks to get rid of the sleep in his eyes. Carmen rushes to his side once again and looks down on her injured son. Miguel looks up at his mother, knowing that his words had hurt her.
"I'm sorry, Mom", says Miguel.
"It's ok, baby", says Carmen.
"If you want to go out with Sensei Lawrence…I mean, Mr. Lawrence, it's fine by me, but I'm not ready to see 'him' yet".
"You mean, Robby?"
"Not just yet".
"Well, you don't have to worry, you won't see him for a while, because as of tomorrow, you start rehab".
Miguel frowns at the word 'rehab'. All he can think of is how long a road this will be.
Meanwhile, Johnny is driving Robby to see Shannon at the Betty Ford Clinic.
"Would you mind if I came in with you?" asks Johnny.
"I don't know, Dad", says Robby.
"I just want to make peace with your mom, that's it".
"Ok, whatever".
Hearing Robby saying the words 'whatever' has Johnny squirming in his seat.
Meanwhile at the hospital, Daniel is helping Sam with her belongings. The site of his daughter's contusions sends shivers down Daniel's spine. Her trembling every time she walks towards him, the site of her bandaged arm and the casing around her ribs. Daniel wipes the tears from his eyes and turns away, not wanting Sam to see his tears.
"You ok, Dad?" asks Sam.
"Yeah, I'm good", says Daniel.
Sam looks into her father's eyes and sees sadness. As they walk out of her hospital room, everything that has happened in the last few days has affected more than just Samantha: Robby, Miguel, Amanda, Carmen, even Anthony, but Daniel seems somewhat stoic.
"You know, Robby came to see me today", says Sam.
"Yeah, Johnny said he volunteers here", says Daniel.
"Apparently, Mrs. Diaz organised it".
As they reach the elevator, a familiar voice calls out her name.
"Sam?" It is Miguel with Carmen and Rosa. Miguel is sitting upright in a wheelchair with neck support, secured arms and a neck brace.
"Miguel", says Sam.
Carmen looks up and sees Daniel, they are both hesitant to acknowledge one another.
"Why don't I leave the two of you alone to talk?" asks Daniel.
"Actually, Mr. LaRusso, can I talk to you?", says Miguel.
"Me?" asks Daniel.
"Please, it's important".
"Okay".
"We'll give you both a minute", says Carmen.
Carmen, Rosa and Sam head for the reception, while Miguel and Daniel sit and talk, face-to-face, in the waiting room.
"Is it true?" asks Miguel.
"Is what true?" asks Daniel.
"Did Sensei Lawrence lose the dojo?"
Realising how much this would be affecting Miguel, Daniel nods softly.
"You know, I tried to warn him about Kreese, but he didn't listen to me", says Miguel.
"You're not the only one, kid", says Daniel.
"What do you mean?"
"John Kreese is…well, let's just say he's…he's the worst thing that ever happened to your Sensei".
"What did he do?"
Thinking back to the end of the All Valley Tournament on December 19th 1984, witnessing Kreese trying to kill Johnny, Daniel realises that this is not his story to tell.
"You're going to have to ask your Sensei", says Daniel.
"Please, I have to know", says Miguel.
Defeated at the site of a pleading child that is injured partly because of him, Daniel nods gently.
"Kreese tried to kill him", says Daniel.
At first, Miguel is in disbelief, but after thinking back to the 'school brawl', it begins to make sense. Seeing his look of defeat, Daniel decides to make things right.
"Do you remember when I came into the dojo that night, and I told you not to believe a word your Sensei said to you, or you'll end up like him?" asks Daniel.
"Why would you bring this up now?" asks Miguel.
"I was wrong, Miguel, you weren't going to end up like Johnny, but I always knew this was a dark path for you to go on".
"I appreciate what you're trying to do, Mr. LaRusso, but it doesn't matter anymore, because I will never walk again".
"Your rehab starts tomorrow, right?"
"Yeah, and who the hell is going to pay for it?"
Gently smiling, Daniel pulls out his phone.
"I found this in a news story", says Daniel.
Daniel shows Miguel a GoFundMe page that reads: "Help Pay for Miguel's Rehab". Within the page is a photo and description: Miguel had an accident at school and needs your help to walk again. After reading the description, Miguel's eyes widen with amazement and sees that the goal is $15,000 with the number already a $3,000.
"Who did this?" asks Miguel.
"It says Anonymous, so I guess we'll never know", says Daniel.
Seeing some light at the end of the tunnel, Miguel knows what he has to.
"I'm sorry, Mr. LaRusso", says Miguel.
"What for?" asks Daniel.
"I wasn't exactly the greatest boyfriend to Sam".
"Just focus on taking care of yourself, Miguel".
"I will".
"I'll go get your mom".
Daniel gets up and goes to fetch Carmen, leaving Miguel temporarily alone with his thoughts.
