Moving day had arrived. Jack and Elizabeth were loading the wagons with the help of Abigail, Bill, Lee and Rosemary. They had three wagons lined up outside their row house, each one full. Jack and Bill carried out the last of the furniture and loaded it into a wagon. Jack and Elizabeth climbed into the first wagon and headed toward their new home, followed by Lee and Rosemary in the next wagon and Abigail and Bill in the third. The path led past Lee and Rosemary's new house and it was coming along quickly. It wouldn't be long now before they were practically right next door again. Jack and Elizabeth turned toward each other and laughed.
Two minutes later they pulled in front of their home and Jack pulled the team to a stop. With everyone's help, they had all three wagons unloaded in just a couple hours. The ladies worked in the house, organizing and decorating while the men unloaded the wagons.
"Your home is so beautiful," Abigail said as she unloaded crates of dishes into the cupboards.
"Thank you, Abigail. Jack did such a great job designing this house for us."
Rosemary was busy unpacking Elizabeth's delicate trinkets and placing them on the shelves while Elizabeth was lining her books along the new bookshelf that Jack had built for her.
"Thank you all for helping us move. I don't think Jack and I could have gotten all this done by ourselves."
"You are quite welcome," Rosemary replied, smiling. "We might need some help soon as well."
"Yes, your house is going up very quickly," Abigail said. "It looks magnificent too."
"Thank you. Lee and I worked on the plans together but I added a lot of little details to the plans to add a touch of class to the home." Rosemary was motioning with her arms, waving them both into an outward circle, using that Rosie flare like she does.
"Well, it definitely shows," Abigail added.
"When is it supposed to be completed?" Elizabeth asked her, curious how long Jack and her would actually have alone in their new home.
"Within the month I believe. I've ordered all new furniture that should arrive in three weeks. Hopefully it's ready or we might have to rent your little row house to store it in."
Jack, Lee and Bill were done unloading the wagons and joined the women in the house. "We're going to take the wagons back to town." Jack said to Elizabeth, "I'll be back on Sargent after we unhitch the teams. Will you be okay here until I get back?"
"Yes, I'll be fine. I still have a lot of unpacking to do to keep me busy."
"Do you need us to stay and help, Elizabeth?" Abigail asked her.
"No, I'm fine. Thank you for all your help." Elizabeth gave Abigail and Rosemary each a hug, then thanked Lee and Bill and hugged them. "You all are welcomed here anytime."
"The place looks great," Bill told her, giving her a big hug back.
"Thank you, Bill. Once we get settled in, we'll host a dinner here and you all are invited."
"That sounds wonderful, Elizabeth," Abigail replied, "let me know if you need anything."
Jack walked up to Elizabeth and gave her a quick kiss good bye. "I have a few surprises for you when I get back. So be ready," he whispered in her ear.
"Be ready for what?" she blushed.
"You'll just have to wait or it wouldn't be a surprise," he grinned, dimples showing, before he walked out the door.
Elizabeth was alone in her new home for the first time. She walked around looking at everything, running her hand along the table top in the kitchen, looking out the large picture window in the sitting room, then walked out and stood on the front porch. The view was amazing: Jack had placed the house perfectly so they could overlook the valley. She walked off the porch and out into the yard. After a short distance, she turned toward the house, staring at it, etching that moment and image into her mind. Jack had done it again, built something just for her. She knew if he was still a bachelor, he would be living in a jail somewhere. But he had wanted Elizabeth, to make her happy, to give her everything he could.
Elizabeth was sitting on the front steps when Jack rode up on Sargent. "What are you doing out here?" he asked her as he slid off his horse.
"Enjoying the view and it just got a whole lot better."
Jack tied Sargent to the hitching post, walked up to Elizabeth, picked her up and started up the steps.
"Whoa, what are you doing?" Elizabeth asked with a start.
"Carrying you over the threshold of our new house, my beautiful wife."
"We've already walked through here a few dozen times, Jack."
He set her down carefully once he got inside. "I know, but we're moved in and alone now." He took her hand and led her over to her reading chair. "Please, have a seat."
Elizabeth sat down, looking up at Jack with a puzzled look. "What's going on?"
"I have a little surprise for you. A few actually." Jack walked over to the corner where all the unpacked crates were still sitting. He pulled a package from behind the crates and carried it to Elizabeth. "Here is a little housewarming gift for you." Jack set the package in front of Elizabeth.
Elizabeth looked up at Jack and grinned, then began to tear off the brown paper it was wrapped with. She could see a painting appearing as she removed the paper. "Oh, Jack." Elizabeth finished removing the wrapping and asked Jack to hold it up. "Did you paint this?"
"Yes."
"It's beautiful." Elizabeth stood so she could look at it closer. Jack had painted the little schoolhouse and he hadn't missed a single detail. Then she saw it, right there, standing in front of the school house, was the exact same figures that had been hidden in the Founder's Day play backdrop: the likeness of Jack and Elizabeth kissing. Elizabeth looked at Jack with a questioning look on her face. Jack was grinning with a very mischievous smile and a spark in his eyes. "You painted that backdrop, didn't you?"
Jack just shrugged his shoulders, still wearing the same grin.
"Jack Thornton." Elizabeth placed both hands on her hips and gave Jack her angry teacher face.
"Okay, you got me. Yes, I painted the backdrop. I knew I wanted to kiss you even back then." Jack set the painting down and pulled Elizabeth into a warm embrace and kissed her. "Welcome home, Mrs. Thornton."
"Thank you, Mr. Thornton."
"Okay, you wait here." Jack walked back to the pile of crates and picked one up, setting it down on top of a larger one. He picked up the crowbar and used it to remove the top of the crate. Moving the lid aside, he motioned for Elizabeth to come stand beside him.
Elizabeth joined Jack and looked into the crate. Sitting inside was a brand-new Victrola. "Jack, this is wonderful."
He removed the Victrola and placed it on the side table then walked back to the pile. He picked up a small package and opened it, revealing a vinyl for the Victrola. Placing it on the turntable, Jack carefully moved the needle over and down and cranked the handle. The same song as from their music box began to play. Jack walked up to Elizabeth, holding his hand out, not saying a word. Elizabeth placed her hand in his and they began to turn around the room, dancing to their song. Jack pulled her closer to him and gave her a gentle kiss. "I love you, Elizabeth. I want to give you the world."
"I don't need the world, Jack. I just need you."
They continued to dance for a while, enjoying the presence of each other in the peace of their new home.
