GV: Hey Sol, you there?
SV: Wow! It's been, what, a month?
GV: Yes, sorry, it's been busy.
SV: You back on the Citadel yet?
GV: No.
SV: Does this top-secret mission of yours have an end date?
GV: Not exactly. It ain't over 'til it's over.
SV: That's cute. Whose saying is that one? Asari?
SV: Wait, no, not cryptic enough. Must be krogan.
GV: Close.
SV: Human, then.
GV: Got it.
GV: So how's Mom?
SV: We had a good day today. Actually, it's been a good week. I don't want to be overly optimistic…but maybe last month was a fluke, rather than the beginning of a more serious decline.
GV: I certainly hope so.
SV: You seem distracted. What's up?
SV: G, come on. What is it?
SV: Mom's doing good, so I have all this extra patience to spare on you for once!
GV: Hah. Okay. Just give me a minute to think how I can put this without revealing anything classified.
SV: I'll wait.
GV: The commanding officer on this mission has given me a lot to think about.
SV: That was…anti-climactic.
SV: Wait, sorry, I said I'd be patient. Let me try again.
SV: Ahem: do go on, dear brother, for I will be supportive.
GV: Thanks Sol. Really appreciate it all the effort you're putting into this.
SV: You should!
GV: Anyhow…what I'm trying to say is that I've never met anyone like her. I always thought I understood how the world worked: there are good people and there are bad people. Sometimes, it can be hard to tell the two apart, but she blurs the lines.
SV: Wow. Wait until I tell Dad you're sympathizing with the criminals now.
GV: No, it's not that. Spirits, I'm not explaining this very well at all, am I? No, if anything, it's the opposite of what you said. Yes, good people can make bad decisions that put them on the other side of the law. But people who think they're doing the right thing can be wrong, too. Or do something for the wrong reasons, at least.
GV: And the reasons matter. The reasons are everything. They didn't used to matter, but she's opened my eyes to that.
GV: And, what's more, she never seems to be wrong. Because, the thing about her is that every call she's made has been the right one for the right reasons.
GV: How does someone like that even exist in a world as messed up as this one? I think as long I as stick with her, I'll be okay. I've made some choices in my past that I can't be proud of. Not anymore, at least.
SV: Knowing you, you're probably being too hard on yourself. You've always tried to do the right thing, G.
GV: Tried. And failed.
GV: I don't think I'm going back to C-Sec.
SV: What the hell do you mean by that?
GV: I mean I think C-Sec is part of the problem. I can't think clearly when my options are so limited by their red tape and politicking. I can't do what needs to be done.
SV: I thought this was a C-Sec assignment? What do you mean "go back"?
GV: It's complicated.
SV: Dad is going to kill you, you know.
GV: And then arrest himself for murder.
GV: Amazing how the old jokes still apply.
SV: Yeah, amazing. Being able to tell the same joke from when we were kids definitely has nothing to do with your inability to grow up.
GV: Ouch.
SV: Yeah, well, I can't be sorry when it's true.
SV: So no C-Sec after you've wrapped up…whatever this mission is? What will you even do?
GV: I have no idea.
SV: Hey, well, keep in touch, at least, okay?
GV: I'll try. Goodnight, Sol. Tell Mom I say "hi".
SV: Will do. Goodnight, G.
Chat ended.
