"Okay, we can get to the town of Norfolk in a few hours. There we can eat and get some shelter." Abby says as they walk down the street, trying not to worry about the snow that was starting to fall. Ellie just looked down at her feet as they walked, holding her side where the bullet grazed her as she tried to straighten out her thoughts, Over the course of the last couple months she had really gotten to know Abby; the two had fought together, talked, and even laughed together and Ellie was starting to see Abby as a friend or even more than that.
She hated herself for it.
The snow started coming down harder until it was a full blown blizzard, making it harder for them to see anything and it wasn't long before the snow was already up to their ankles.
"Through here! Just a little further!" Abby called as she walked ahead of them, barely able to walk through the snow with the winds, "this house. Right up here!" She says as she ran to a house to their left, knowing they wouldn't be able to make it to Norfolk in this weather.
"Oh thank God." Lev says as they went into the house and closed the door behind them while Ellie went to light the fireplace so they could get warm.
Abby took her jacket off and hung it over the back of the couch while Ellie started tending to the wound in her side. She didn't look at Abby or Lev, refusing their offer to help her get cleaned up. She spent most of her life taking care of herself and not relying on others to do it and she wasn't about to start now.
"Well at least it's warm enough in here. We might be stuck here for a couple days depending on how long the storm lasts." Abby says, pulling the curtains over the windows as Lev past some food to them.
Ellie finally took her own coat off and kicked her boots off, letting Abby take the jacket and put it on the couch next to hers for it to dry before she sat down herself.
"Any idea how long this will last?" Lev asks, looking at the two women.
"Hopefully it'll be done by tomorrow. I've seen storms last for days." She explains as she started eating, noticing that Ellie was barely touching her food, nor looking at her companions.
"Hey, after Norfolk can I take the lead with the map?" Lev asks, wanting to be of some help to the two.
"Yeah. You can take the lead. I don't care." Ellie says with a shrug, looking at them barely as she ate again, the three remaining silent for the next few hours until Lev went to bed.
"Hey, thank you for helping us get through the hunters and keeping me calm when we were crossing over to other buildings." Abby says, her blue eyes darting up to rest on Ellie's face, who avoided eye contact.
"No problem. I've met hunters a few times over the years and it's terrifying." Ellie says with a shrug, looking up before quickly looking away as Abby moved to sit right next to her.
"Why are you so intent on keeping us alive?"
Ellie shrugged, "I mean we have a deal about not killing each other and I guess I wanted to return the favor. Do for someone what Joel did for me." She says, finally looking up and making eye contact with Abby, "I've forgiven you but I haven't forgotten." She adds, leaning over to stare into the older girl's eyes.
"I know. Me neither," Abby says softly, her voice barely above a whisper, "why have you been acting so weird today?"
"Because I'll admit, sometimes I want to punch you in the face."
"What do you want to do now then?"
Ellie didn't say anything as she pressed her lips to Abby's.
Abby couldn't help herself as she kissed Ellie back, only for the other girl to finally snap out of it and push Abby away from her, stunning the blonde.
"No. This can't happen." Ellie says, getting up and not even grabbing her coat or putting her boots back on before running out into the blizzard.
Leaving Abby alone.
