Chapter 13: Entropy Curve

October 23th, 2021
There is less than two days left before the World Science Festival that is being held for the first time in Akihabara. Over the course of late September and most of October, all the scientists in the Future Gadget Laboratory have worked hard to create the gadgets they have selected. There have been many trial and errors, but they have been a great success overall to advance one step further.
Today, all the future gadgets have finished being made and properly tested to function properly. Now, they must go through a voting process with the original lab members to see which is appropriate to present in the name of the Future Gadget Laboratory.
Over at the old lab, Okabe is no longer in the wheelchair after a full recovery from the incident in September. He is fully back into action with his persona. "Alright! Lab members were holding a round table meeting!"
Everyone gathers around. Okabe pulls out a cart hidden behind his room and pulls off the big cloth covering what was underneath it, which are the future gadgets made by his Interns. "So, each of you will need to decide which future gadget is appropriately presentable to grab the attention of people at the World Science Festival. That way, they will be amazed how the Future Gadget Laboratory, owned by the insane mmmaaaddddd scientist, can create future gadgets that can plunge the world into chaos!"
"So basically just to show that the Future Gadget Laboratory can make a bigger name for itself." implies Kurisu.
"That's right! As expected of my personal Assistant to summarize the objective."
Kurisu gets a bit annoyed by the nickname but instead sighs. "Yea, yea."
"So, Nae of the Elite Four! Go ahead and present the lab members the Future Gadgets!"
Nae is weirded out a bit by Okabe's comment, but continues with her objective. "Ok. So to start off, we first have version 2 of "Future Gadget Number 3: Could This Be Ora Ora." The purpose of this gadget is to read your vitals with your fingerprints depending on how you place pressure on it, and can detect the odor, and the type of sweating depending on how your body released it. This can then detect whether or not you are being honest or you're lying about a question asked. Testing of this gadget is a success with no errors."
Faris role plays. "So, there is a machine that has the same power as my secret weapon nyan?"
"Seems so." Luka responds.
Nae continues to the second Future Gadget. "Next one is, version 3 of "Future Gadget Number 38: Shocking Sound!" This gadget is an enhanced version of version 2. Now having a stronger sound blast and area of effect. As for the song it utilizes, it plays the intro of "Hacking to the Gate" for a better initial blast effect. This is also the music from the album Okabe had stored in his office. Testing this gadget was a success with one failure in the first test run."
Yuki looks at Mayuri. "Hey, remember when the lab members accidentally used version 2?"
Mayuri nods in agreement. "Yea. It made a huge mess in the old lab and Okarin got very mad."
Nae explains the final gadget. "The last one is "Future Gadget Number 131: Superior Prosthetic Arm." This new gadget will have calibration and sync to just like a real human arm so that it's users will never feel like they are missing an arm. The arm also has a transformation capability depending on what additional parts can be compatible with." Nae activates the arm as it transforms to having a shield component. "For example, it can become a shield to help block attacks if it is ever necessary for defensive purposes. Testing this gadget had several failures due to mechanism issues, but the end result became a complete success. With that, concludes the presentation of all the future gadgets."
The lab members are amazed by the gadgets and applauded for the presentation. "Well done! This was an amazing presentation!" says Mayuri.
"As expected of Kyouma and the Elite Four to create such chaotic gadgets in such a short time-nyan!" says Faris
Okabe laughs. "Thank you for your kind words Faris. This is because all due to it being the choice of Steins Gate!" Okabe clears his throat. "Now, my fellow lab members. It is time to make a decision! Which gadget is presentable to show the power of the Future Gadget Laboratory!"
Everyone begins to think carefully. It is a tough decision, because all the gadgets seem to be very interesting and all show a good purpose on what their lab does in general.
"Hmm. I have no clue to be honest. FG003 is one of the first gadgets made in the lab, so it's definitely something important to show." says Yuki.
Moeka types out her second response and sends it to Okabe to read it. "Oh? An email? From Shining Finger. "Then you have FG038 which is a fun creation, and yet holds a purpose to be some sort of weapon if you look at it that way." Hmm."
"Lastly, you have FG131 which will most likely benefit the people around the world. An arm function just like a human arm can help those who need a prosthetic arm in the first place." says Luka.
Everyone gets stuck in their decisions as it begins to get to them to decide anything at all. However, Mayuri then speaks up for another suggestion. "Hey Okarin? How about using all the gadgets in the festival?"
"Huh? Why would we?" he questions.
Mayuri nods sideways and thinks Okabe has not thought this through. "You know Okarin ,you should just use all the gadgets on the cart to present at the festival. When you want to put your name out to the world, you must provide multiple examples of your creations to show that your lab can do many things."
Okabe begins to think as Daru agrees with Mayuri's advice. "Mayushii has got a point. The more we can present at the festival, the more people will be much more interested in our lab."
Maho nods in agreement. "True."
Kurisu does so as well and tells Okabe her opinion. "Indeed. You know Okabe, we should actually just use all the gadgets we presented here for the festival."
Okabe thinks once more about what everyone is saying. He has never thought about presenting more than one gadget because he has never gone to a festival to present his lab before, however he then thinks through that the more gadgets they can present, the more people will be curious of there lab. After a few more seconds, Okabe makes his decision. "Alright! All the lab members have agreed to use all the gadgets presented? Then that is what we will do! We will use all the gadgets to present how powerful the Future Gadget Laboratory is!"
After the presentation of the Future Gadgets to the lab members. Everyone decides to stick around to hang out together in the old lab, like the good old days. However, Okabe decides to heads down the CRT Shop where Mr. Braun is currently working there. He then steps up to him to speak.
'Oh, Okabe, what's up?" Mr. Braun asks.
"Mr. Braun! In 2 days, The Future Gadget Laboratory will be participating in the World Science Festival taking place here!"
Mr. Braun's face is weirded out by Okabe's persona but continues. "Yea. I know about that."
Okabe then switches out of his persona and gets serious. "There is also a chance unknown secret organizations may arrive on that day as well to spy on the participating laboratories. To prepare ahead of time, I want you to prepare the Special Forces to guard that day. Make sure no one suspicious tries to pull anything terrible."
He sighs. "You know, you might just be way too overprotective, you know that?"
"Maybe. However, this all to make sure no one tries to get ahead of themselves to cause chaos!"
Mr. Braun thinks for a moment before responding, "I understand. I will order several men to be guards and secretly watch the area."
"Thank you, Mr. Braun! Your efforts to the Future Gadget Laboratory will be most appreciated! Well, see ya."
Okabe soon leaves back to the old lab. As he disappears, Mr. Braun says something to himself. "What a pain with his attitude. I will just never understand him."
Night fall in Akihabara. Everyone is getting ready to fall asleep since they need to get a good night sleep for tomorrow's busy day. Unfortunately, most of the original lab members have work so they can't come over to the World Science Festival.
"Mayushii feel sad that we can't go to Okarin's festival tomorrow" says Mayuri with a sad tone.
"Me too." says Luka. "But, at least Moeka-san will take picture for us to see what happened."
Mayuri nods in agreement. "Yep. That way, we can add them to the album of the Future Gadget Laboratory."
"You mean that big book we personally made for originally Kyouma-san?"
"Yes, but Okarin forgets to take picture most of the time. So we do it for him." says Mayuri with a smile. "It's honestly fun to do. That way, when we get old, we can look back at all the good times we had together."
Luka smiles in agreement. "I agree." There is a pause. "Do you think he will be ok? He has been experiencing more black outs recently. I'm worried about what could be causing him to go through that."
Mayuri also feels worried. "Me too. But, Okarin tends to ignore it and move on. After all, he is the mad scientist, Hououin Kyouma."
Luka and Mayuri smile as they both agree Okabe's mad scientist persona is what allows him to move on. However, at the same time, Mayuri is a bit sad again, because she has a idea that the black out Okabe has been getting is possibly due to his PTSD.
Not far from where Mayuri and Luka live, a mysterious black cloaked figure watches from a far, as if they are trying to guard them, or listening into the conversation.
October 25th, 2021
It is the day of the World Science Festival. It begins as early as 8 am, but it still already attracts a lot of guests. Every participant and visitor gather around a massive conference building that is big enough for all the participating labs to share their creations and theories. This festival's purpose is to expand the world of science, and hopefully grabs people's attention to join their labs.
The place is crowded with guests with all sorts of diversity and age. There are labs participating from, mainly Japan, America, Europe, and Russia. However, there are so from Central and South America, the Middle East, and China. Everyone has their own variety of creations and theories that are being presented to the public.
Within everyone, is the Future Gadget Laboratory, explaining their purpose as a lab to their audience, and showing demonstrations of the future gadgets they have made. For those who want to see the use of FG038, they must enter a special room with protective gear since the gadget is quite loud, and impactful.
Okabe is with his group to represent as head of the Future Gadget Laboratory. However, what weirds out most of his viewers is his persona. Who knows if it because it is strangely unusual to see, or if he is just crazy overall. Regardless, they take a liking to the the persona in the end, as Okabe goes through slideshows of all the information needed to tell about his viewers, while allowing his supervisors to take turns in explain each important part. This already takes up hours. Fortunately, they are making great success as a lot of the guests gather every time to see what the Future Gadget Laboratory is all about. After all, future gadgets is already an interesting topic to the eyes of many. Not far from them, Moeka roams around, taking pictures of everything that is happening to Okabe's group, but also from other labs.
Time flies by again, as it reaches late afternoon. Everyone is still busy with presentations and demonstrations. Okabe takes a short break from explaining so much information over and over, as his persona takes a toll on his energy too. He drinks some water and watches his supervisors and some participating Interns help out with the presentations. He smiles, because he is glad to see the Future Gadget Laboratory a reality, and doing what he wished he always wanted to do. He is glad to see his lab making a success so far with the festival as well.
"Hey! Lintahlo!"
Okabe suddenly gets startles as he recognizes the voice of the person and who calls him that name. He quickly turns to the direction of the voice. Who he sees shocks him. It is the people who were once his professors at Viktor Chondria University. It is revealed to be Alexis Leskinen, or known as Professor Leskinen. Next to him is also revealed to be Judy Reyes, also known as Professor Reyes.
"P-Professor Leskinen?!"
Leskinen laughs. "Hey boy! What's up?!"
Okabe is startled by his sudden appearance but responds with a smile with english in an accent. "I-I'm doing fine. And how about you?"
"Oh just getting older and older. Still researching back in America as usual."
Okabe laughs. "I see. And how are you Professor Reyes?"
"Just continuing down the life as a scientist." she says.
Okabe smiles. "I see. That is good."
"So Lintahlo, what brings you here to the World Science Festival?" Leskinen asks with curiosity.
"Well, I am participating in the festival like every other scientist here." Okabe points to the direction of his area.
Leskinen and Reyes look to where he is pointing, and they are stunned to see familiar faces. Kurisu, Maho, and Daru are there presenting as part of the Future Gadget Laboratory.
"Kurisu, Maho, and Daru?! They all work with you in the same laboratory?!"
"Yes. They are part of the laboratory I work in."
Leskinen laughs in amazement. "I see! So that is where they all went to after leaving Viktor Chondria University. I never thought they would work in Japan!" He then gets curious. "Say, I know your close friends with Daru, but what is your relationship with Kurisu and Maho?"
"W-Well, Maho is part of the lab as a supervisor and an important friend. Kurisu is um…...ummm…" Okabe hesitates to respond to the question.
However, Reyes responds for him. "So, since you are acting like that, you must have a special relationship with Kurisu, hmm?"
Okabe wishes for this to stop right now. He is too embarrassed for his professors to know he and Kurisu are boyfriend and girlfriend. Suddenly, a scientist comes forth to the professors to tell them that they are needed back at the post to present their lab.
They nod and say their farewells for now. "Well we can continue this later." says Leskinen. "We need to head back to our post. So we must talk later. Ok, Lintahlo?"
"S-Sure." says Okabe as he sees them off.
Far in a corner where no one barley can see, there is a suspicious person in a black cloak from two nights ago, hiding their identity from everyone. They only watch who appears to be Okabe. Also in parts of the festival, a few men in black suits appear in corners of the building, also watch their surroundings for something.
As time goes on, every participant and visitor head for a massive conference room to have a discussion on science and possible theories that can be put out in the open. Throughout the conference, there is clear discussion, confusing discussion, and heated discussion. However everyone enjoys the time of going through theory after theory, presentation after presentation. During presentations, two topics draw the attention of both the participants and the visitors. The first topic is the Future Gadget Laboratory's newest future gadget "Future Gadget 131: Superior Prosthetic Arm." This is the main point of a revolutionary gadget to take prosthetics to the next level which draws many science engineers, and rich consumers. With there future gadget, it can be possible to make a huge name for themselves across the world. The other main thing that is noted is the lab that belongs to Viktor Chondria University. There presentation is about a possible theory, to being able to create a teleporter. This stuns everyone as the human race may be one step closer to being able to make a full functioning teleporter. Everyone applauds for a very stunning theory. As all this occurs, more suspicious people in black suits watch from somewhere in hidden places. Moeka also sits in one of the seats as well while taking pictures of everything that is happening,
As the World Science Festival reaches its final hour., everyone is enjoying free food and a good time chatting together inside a huge cafeteria. It has been a long day and everyone needs a break from all the crazy presentations and discussions, since it has drained most of there energy. As Okabe eats with his friends, his phone rings.
He takes it out and notices the familiar number. He excuses himself from the table and heads to a quiet area to speak. "Mr. Braun? What's happened?"
"A few soldiers of ours have confirmed there are several people in black suits hiding in the festival." says Mr. Braun with concern. "These guys might be after the research that each lab has. We are getting ready to act if they try to steal anything."
Okabe then becomes curious. "Are these people the same black suits from months ago?"
"No, their suits are slightly different. They must be from another organization."
"Got it. I will head right now to the room with our stuff to make sure nothing happens. El Psy Kongroo." Okabe shuts off his phone and walks over to his destination. As he leaves, the person with the black cloak follows secretly.
Okabe soon makes it to his destination, and his eyes widen. He notices the room with the future gadgets is open, and it was locked before they left to eat. Okabe slowly walks through the hall and takes a quick peek to see who might have opened it. Who he sees are the people of what Mr. Braun said earlier to be careful for. A couple of people in black suits broke into the room and they are trying to steal their gadgets. He takes a quick look to see there suits, and they are in fact somewhat different from the other people in black suits he dealt against back in July.
Okabe gets a bit angry and calls them out. "Hey! Those gadgets belong to the Future Gadget Laboratory that is owned by the insan-!"
As Okabe tries to finish his sentence, the people in black suits suddenly pull at a pistol, and aim it at him. He gets shocked by the pistol, and makes a quick dive to the ground to avoid a bullet being shot at him a second after.
Okabe hears the gunshot and quickly gets up to make a run for it. At the end of the hallway is a button to press incase of a fire. He presses it to notify everyone that something bad is happening. Then, he sees the men in black suits exit the room and look at his direction to aim and shoot another bullet. The bullet misses again.
Okabe continues to run down another hallway while taking out his phone and calling for Mr. Braun. "Mr. Braun! We have an emergency! The people in black suits have guns and are trying to steal the gadgets! Stop them!"
Mr. Braun quickly notifies the Special Forces to find the enemy quickly as they begin searching the building. Moments later, they find the enemy on the second floor. They point their guns in the air and tell them to freeze. However, they refuse and shoot the Special Forces to distract them, while allowing one person with the gadgets to escape in one direction, and another person with research papers to escape in another direction.
Down on the first floor, all the people are already curious about why the fire alarm is going off. Then, they hear massive bang noises that startle them all. It is obvious to tell they are gun shots. One man comes forth to tell them to get out. "Get out! It's a terrorist attack!" Everyone immediately runs out for the exits.
Okabe's group are startled for what is going on and begin running for the exit. "What is going on?!" Maho asks.
"It seems this place is under attack by an organization!" says Daru.
Kurisu however, wants to return back because Okabe is still inside somewhere in the building, but Maho insists her to run out for now with their Interns. "No Kurisu! It's dangerous there! We can't risk going inside right now!"
"But what about Okabe?!" she asks with fear.
Daru assures her worries. 'Don't worry! Okarin will be fine! I will head inside to search for him!" Daru quickly runs back inside to search. The only thing Maho and Kurisu can do right now is run for safety with the small group of Interns they brought along as well.
Back on the second floor, a shoot out between the Special Forces and the unknown enemy in black suits occurs. So far no one can really move from there post. The person who stole the gadgets however is already in a different location as he begins to make his escape. Suddenly, Okabe comes forth from a corner to tackle the man and try to restrain him. The enemy however punches Okabe to get him off and grabs his gun in his holster. He gets up and turns to Okabe who is on the ground, and Okabe quickly sees a gun pointed at him. Fortunately, just as the trigger is pulled to shoot him, the person in the black cloak comes from behind the enemy and knocks him out instantly.
Okabe is startled by the sudden appearance of the person with the cloak and almost being shot to death. However, the mysterious person doesn't stay for long as they quickly leave the scene. Okabe is shocked and wonders who the person was who just saved him. Moments later, Daru finds him. "Okarin!" shouts Daru as he runs to Okabe.
"D-Daru!" Okabe shouts.
"What's going on?! Who is this person!"
"I don't know, but restrain them so they won't run away. They are currently knocked out but not for long." Okabe grabs the gun that the enemy dropped. "I'm going to find the others! There is still more up on the second floor!"
"Got it! Be careful!" says Daru and he begins to tie up the enemy and Okabe heads upstairs.
The enemy forces are currently backed up as they are being surrounded by the Special Forces. Then, one of them gets shot in the back by Okabe who now has a gun. They decide to retreat in one final room. As Okabe holds place in a corner, Moeka comes running up with a gun to also help.
"Shining Finger?!" Okabe asks with shock. "Your here too?!"
She nods. "Yep. But, don't worry about that. They enemy is ahead."
Okabe agrees and holds position once again.
However, as Okabe and the Special Forces close in, the enemy transmits a call to an anonymous person. "One of us escaped with the research papers, but the other might have failed to escape with the gadgets."
The anonymous person speaks. "Do not worry. The research papers will have to do. Initiate plan B to avoid any more issues."
"Yes Sir!" say one enemy. One of the men who wore a black coat opens it, and reveals a huge vest of devices. Everyone outside in the hallway then gets a detection warning on their special devices that a device is being turned on and is considered highly lethal. Mr. Braun immediately recognizes what the device is and calls for everyone to get out of there. "The enemy is a suicide bomber! Get out of here NOW!"
Okabe and the special forces hear the call and quickly leave the place. In seconds, he and alongside Moeka reach Daru to warn him. "Daru! Help carry the enemy and get out now!"
"Huh?!" Daru responds.
However, before they could try to, the enemy with the devices pulls out a remote, and presses a button to initiate the explosion. The explosion causes a whole part of the building to explode and collapse. This explosion can be seen outside by everyone, as it scares everyone watching outside. Maho and Kurisu are very shocked by what just happened, and they both become very worried for Okabe and Daru. Kurisu becomes especially worried for Okabe.
Fortunately, Okabe, Daru, and Moeka are all ok. They just suffer from a bit of debris falling on them, but they are not hurt. They quickly pull out the tied enemy and gather the gadgets to exit the building to not stay inside any longer.
The sun begins to set a couple hours later. A long day of the World Science Festival turned into a nightmare near the end. Fortunately, no one was hurt other than the enemy forces. Okabe and Daru speak with police and officials to tell what they witnessed. The Special Forces are also with them alongside Moeka.
After over an hour of speaking, Okabe and Daru are finally allowed to leave and head back. They quickly manage to re-encounter with Maho and Kurisu. Kurisu and Maho run to them and as Kurisu hugs Okabe to see he is doing alright.
"Are you alright?" Kurisu asks
"Yea, we are ok." Okabe responds.
"What happened?"
"An attack from an unknown organization. They were after research papers and items from multiple laboratories, including ours."
"What?!" Maho says as she is shocked to hear the news.
"Yea. But fortunately, we manage to save our gadgets from enemy hands." says Daru as he holds the gadgets in his hands.
Kurisu sighs in relief that everything is over. "That's great." There is a pause. "Well, are we allowed to go home? I want to just leave this place right now."
Okabe nods. "Yea. Let me just tell the Special Forces something and I'll be right over."
Kurisu nods. "Ok." She leaves with Maho and Daru back to the van.
Okabe heads over to Mr. Braun to talk with them about something. "Mr. Braun! Any injuries from our side?"
"No. Everyone is doing fine." Mr. Braun responds.
"Good. You also can rest for now. However, I suggest to be prepared in a couple of days. We must figure out who this mysterious organization is."
Mr. Braun doesn't exactly like Okabe's next idea. "Okabe? You don't think that is pushing it a little too far? We should just stay out of this and let the officials handle this."
Okabe laughs with his persona. "Mr. Braun! The organization has stolen valuable treasure! It can cause world chaos if they know how to use it wisely! So we must act fast and find out who they are and disrupt their plans!"
Mr. Braun sighs. "Well we have already done several related events like that before so I will go along with your order. However, I hope you know what you may get into."
"I will also help in researching about the unknown organization." says Moeka
"Thank you, Shining Finger. And Mr. Braun, do not worry. I am the insane mad scientist that is the only one who can plunge the world into chaos!"
Not far from where Okabe and the Special Forces are, the mysterious person in a black cloak hides behind a bush, as they leave since everything is over, for now.
