Chapter 13: Marooned
(As the rain falls and the wind blows, Dipper pulls himself out of the water and onto the shore of the island. He sees the big boat that rammed into theirs is wrecked on a rock in the water. His hat is missing and his sister is nowhere in sight.)
Dipper: (dazed) Alright... c'mon, Dipper. I gotta get off this beach.
(He slowly stands up and looks around.)
Dipper: Mabel! Mabel, can you hear me? Maybe farther up shore.
(He moves up the coast against the wind and rain.)
Dipper: Mabel, c'mon answer me!
(He starts to climb some big rocks past the beach. Due to feeling weak, he struggles to climb up.)
Dipper: Mabel! Mabel, are you there?
(He moves along the rocks and drops down from a ledge where he finds the wreckage of their boat by the water with a crate next to it.)
Dipper: Oh, thank God, our supply box.
(He opens it and finds it empty.)
Dipper: Oh, for God's... (sighs) Of course. Everything's gone. Wait, maybe that's a good sign. Maybe Mabel took it.
(He slowly climbs up another ledge and heads into the island.)
Dipper: Well, on the bright side, can't lose anything else... besides my life. (groans) Talking to myself, that's the first sign of... being crazy.
(He carefully starts to scale a cliffside overlooking the shore.)
Dipper: Okay. I'm all right... Just push through it...
(The ledge he's on starts to crack.)
Dipper: Whoa! No, no, no, no!
(He jumps to the next one as it breaks off.)
Dipper: (frustrated) Oh, to hell with this place.
(He gets away from the shore and reaches a narrow cliff wall.)
Dipper: Ah, damn it. Gotta keep going.
(He tries to climb the wall, but with it being slippery and the rain pouring down, his hands start to slip.)
Dipper: Aaaah! Come on.
(He finally lets go of the wall and stumbles to the ground.)
Dipper: Aaaahhhh!
(He lands in a small opening between some big rocks. Exhausted, he doesn't try to stand and loses consciousness as the storm keeps blowing overhead.)
(After some time passes, the rain stops and Dipper regains consciousness. He picks himself up and tries to shake off his weariness. He walks out of the opening between the rocks and something catches his eye. In front of him is a view of the mountain in the center of the island. Underneath the mountain's slope in the midst of a large group of trees in the distance is faint light flashing Morse code. Dipper stares at it curiously and reads it.)
Dipper: S... I... C... "Sic parvis magna". Mabel...
(He takes out his own flashlight and blinks it in Morse code as well.)
Dipper: C'mon... Where are you?
(Mabel's light disappears and doesn't respond. Dipper put his flashlight away.)
Dipper: Crap. (sighs) Gotta get to that... creepy mountain.
(He starts heading in the direction of the mountain as the dark storm clouds start to clear out in the sky above.)
Dipper: Just stay put, Mabel... I'm coming to you.
(He then reaches a cliffside overlooking the coast between him and the mountain. He navigates it by climbing along the edges and swinging between ledges with his rope. He nearly falls a few times but makes it to the top of the cliff wall. He stops to catch his breath and notices some boats out in the water down below slowly patrolling the coast.)
Dipper: (weary) Tyrone... Ah, damn it... Watch your back, Mabel.
(He then finds the entrance to a cave and goes in. Inside is a deep chasm.)
Dipper: Where to now?
(He makes his way around the chasm and finds the remains of skeleton at a cave wall with the words "No quarter to them" written on it.)
Dipper: That's not reassuring.
(He enters a smaller tunnel with water on the ground that goes up to his waist.)
Dipper: Oooh! That's refreshing.
(He exits the cave and comes out into a part of the island's jungle. He sees another corpse hanging from a cliff wall by its feet.)
Dipper: Oh, hey. Seen anyone come by here? About my height... long brown hair... filled with big, stupid ideas about pirate treasure?
(He starts scaling the wall and reaches the skeleton.)
Dipper: Were you trying to climb up there? In those boots?
(While hanging from a ledge, he realizes the one above is too high to reach. He sees a piton sticking in the rock holding the hanging corpse. He pulls it out and the corpse falls to the ground.)
Dipper: Pretty sure you don't need this.
(He uses the piton to get himself higher on the cliff so he can reach the higher ledges.)
Dipper: Yeah. That's working.
(He reaches the top and approaches a set of ledges and hilltops overlooking the lower jungle. It's been quiet since he set off for the mountain, but now he hears gunshots and voices near him.)
Dipper: (startled) Oh, shit.
(He quickly hides behind a rock and sees several Shoreline men patrolling around the ledges. One of them just fired a couple rounds at the tree line.)
Mercenary 1: Hey! You got a target?
Mercenary 2: Saw something, maybe... movement along the treeline.
Mercenary 1: Well, that's thick jungle over there. It's all moving. I don't see anything.
Mercenary 2: Damn it. Alright, everyone, false alarm! But keep an eye out!
Mercenary 3: So which one did they spot?
Mercenary 4: The sister. She shot a couple of our men and ran off.
Mercenary 3: You think the brother's alive?
Mercenary 4: Until we find a body, I'm going to go with yeah.
Mercenary 3: How'd they survive that wreck?
Mercenary 4: They keep getting lucky.
Mercenary 3: Well, luck eventually runs out.
Mercenary 4: We'll see.
(Dipper sees a mercenary heading in his direction. He crouches down and moves through some tall grass to approach him. Then he knocks him out and takes his gun. His presence is then alerted by the others.)
Dipper: Ah, damn.
(He engages in a firefight with them and quickly moves around the hilltops to avoid getting shot. After a while, he manages to shoot them all down. Dipper finds a path past the hilltops and proceeds into the jungle.)
Dipper: Okay. Where to?
(He reaches another cliff wall. As he starts to climb, he finds another skeleton sitting on a ledge. It's holding an old note.)
Dipper: What's this?
(He reads the note and learns that it's the final words of member of Burnes' crew who were looking for the treasure. He claims that Burnes became obsessed with finding it to the point where he even left his own men to die when they gave up.)
Dipper: (disturbed) Wow... that is pretty dark. Seems like Burnes's crew had about as much luck as me with this treasure.
(He continues up the cliff and almost reaches the top when the rocks start to crumble.)
Dipper: (frantically) Ah, you gotta be kidding me! Oh no. No, no!
(As the rock he's on starts to tumble down, he gets on top and leaps to the edge of the cliff as the big rock falls to the ground.)
Dipper: (panting) Holy shit...
(He pulls himself up on the ledge and immediately hears movement heading towards him. He quickly pulls his gun out and points it towards the noise, only to find himself facing Mabel who has a gun trained on him. They both calm down and put away their weapons.)
Mabel: (sighs) I nearly shot your head off.
Dipper: (relieved) Mabel... You're okay.
Mabel: (smiles) Yeah. Nothing I can't walk away from. Good to see you're alive, bro.
(She takes out his hat that he lost and puts it back on his head. Dipper smiles back at her.)
Mabel: C'mon. We got a treasure to find.
(As she's about to walk back into the jungle, Dipper's smile drops and he stops her.)
Dipper: (skeptical) Hold up, sis, I mean... What are we doing?
Mabel: (confused) What do you mean?
Dipper: I mean our supplies are at the bottom of the ocean.
Mabel: Okay, so we go steal some from Tambry's army.
Dipper: Yeah, and there's that... We're going up against an army!
Mabel: (assuringly) We've been holding our own so far.
Dipper: While being marooned in the middle of nowhere.
Mabel: We were trying to get here, remember?
Dipper: When we had an escape plan. Okay, just hear me out. Crazy suggestion... let's go down there and at least secure one of Tyrone's boats?
Mabel: The boats can wait. You want to know what we're doing here? We are buying my life back. And we're doing that by stepping into this jungle and finding Libertalia.
Dipper: Have you even seen any signs of a massive pirate colony? 'Cause I sure as hell haven't.
Mabel: (annoyed) It's a little too late to start developing doubts, don'tcha think?
Dipper: Look, can we at least acknowledge the chance that maybe Avery's idea for a secret pirate utopia didn't pan out? And maybe we're just swept up in this fantasy, when instead we should be looking for a real way to save you?
(Mabel walks up to Dipper and glares in his face.)
Mabel: (sternly) I'm gonna scour this island inch by inch if I have to until I find that treasure. Now, if you're confused about what you're doing here... then you can go home, Dipper.
(She starts to turn away, but Dipper, stunned by what she said, pulls her back.)
Dipper: (irritated) Wait, wait, wait. I can go home? Are you kidding me? Do you have any idea what I put on the line to get you here?
Mabel: How about what I put on the line? The last ten years of my life.
Dipper: Oh, C'mon. This has nothing to do with that!
Mabel: (upset) It has everything to do with that!
(The siblings get in each other's faces are about to fight until Dipper notices something behind them. His look turns from angry to curious.)
Mabel: (confused) What?
(Dipper walks over to a wall of plants a few yards away from them. He pulls some of the plants aside and reveals part of a stone wall with Avery's sigil carved into it.)
Dipper: (intrigued) Holy crap.
Mabel: You still wanna go home?
Dipper: Let's just see what else we can find.
(They go past the wall and find a path.)
Mabel: This way.
(They reach an open wooden gate and step through. They find the wall of a stone building next to the path.)
Dipper: I'll be damned.
Mabel: Off to a good start.
Dipper: Yeah. Let's just hope the rest of it isn't buried under centuries of dirt and rock.
Mabel: Glass half full, if you please.
(Dipper finds a small extension of the building sticking out. He climb up it and sees a hole in its roof.)
Dipper: Mabel, up here.
(They drop down into the hole and enter an old abandoned storage warehouse of some kind. It's really wearing down and parts of the roof are collapsed a bit.)
Dipper: No one's home.
Mabel: This place has seen better days, huh?
Dipper: The roof could use some work.
(They move through the place while having to crouch down because of the ruined architecture. Dipper tries to lift a big wooden beam in their way but it's jammed.)
Dipper: Yeah, that's not happening.
Mabel: Hey, Dipper. There's a way through here.
(He follows her through another passage that leads upward and they reach a tall, wide area in the upper part of the building. They're able to stand up.)
Mabel: (relaxed) Ahh. Feels good to stretch out again.
Dipper: Yeah, you said it. Hey, there's a way out.
(They find an open doorway on a broken walkway above them.)
Mabel: It's too high, even for a boost. Let's find something to stand on.
(Dipper finds a crate lying around and pushes it under the doorway.)
Dipper: Here we go.
Mabel: Alright, we're in business.
(She climbs up to the doorway and looks out.)
Mabel: (chuckles) You're gonna wanna see this.
(Dipper follows her up and stands next to her on a platform. In front of them is a view of a large group of old buildings with plants growing all over them. Many are two or three stories tall. There are wide paths between them like some kind of street. More buildings that are even taller can be seen in the distance behind them.)
Dipper: (amazed) Whoa.
Mabel: (grins) What do you see?
Dipper: No houses. Wide street. Clearly a commercial district of some kind.
Mabel: Yes... thank you for that, Dipper. C'mon. What do you see?
Dipper: You just wanna hear me say it, don't you?
Mabel: Really want to hear you say it.
Dipper: (sighs) Alright. Libertalia.
They officially found the legendary pirate utopia. This story is now the longest thing I've written and there's still a lot more to go.
