A Hunger Games Story Chapter 11
Emily woke up as the sun began to rise. She slowly got up out of the bushes, making the bushes rustle. She maneuvered through the twigs and branches of the bushes, trying to make as little noise as possible.
Her stomach was growling. She felt lightheaded as she sat up. Emily opened up her backpack and looked at her oranges. Though she was very hungry, the oranges did not seem appetizing. She craved something with more substance.
Down on the ground, a few little bugs crawled around. There were some ladybugs in the bushes and some roaches on the ground. Emily pulled a stick off the branch and poked one roach with it. She held it up, looking at the little creature still wiggling it's little legs around. Emily looked reluctant as she put the bug in her mouth. She chewed it and covered her mouth.
After eating the roach, Emily's eyes narrowed. Not too bad actually. She used that small little stick to catch another roach.
She looked around before crossing the path to the spring. She stepped into the water and quickly went over to the blind spot in the small cave of the pond.
Once she was out of sight, she took out her water bottle and filled it with water. She drank from the bottle throughout the day and filled it up according.
When she got hungry again, she tried to wait, but her growling stomach echoed in the tunnel. She opens her back and quickly at an orange.
"Well this is boring." Patrick said, watching the show from the mansion. He passed by the living room and watched a few minutes of the live footage on their district's tribute.
Liam shot an angry glare at Patrick for a moment before turned back to the screen. To Emily.
Jerome walked into the living room and handed Liam a plate of scrambled eggs.
Liam accepted it without a glance at Jerome. He took the plate and fork and began eating. His eyes were fixated on the TV.
"You missed the part where she killed someone," Jerome said to Patrick in the kitchen.
"Well damn. I didn't think was capable of it." Patrick said.
"I saw it on the highlights show. She stabbed a boy with a wooden spear." Jerome said.
"Wow." Patrick said. "Maybe she can win."
"I hope so for Liam's sake..." Jerome said.
"But realistically, it won't be her."
"Patrick." Jerome glared at him.
"Those careers and that girl from 12. She got an 11. The odds are not in Emily's favor."
"Her life is not a statistic. Odds don't take into account what you will do survive. We know that better than anyone." Jerome said.
Patrick grabbed a drink from the fridge and left the kitchen.
Emily hid in the cave until the sun began to set. She heard a couple canons go off that third day. She slowly left the cave, trying not to splash. Her bottle was filled with water. She headed back to the same bush, not seeing or hearing any other tributes. Emily slid into the bushes, carefully placing herself out of sight.
The fourth day of the game was a similar routine. Emily woke up, left the bush, ate some bugs, went to blind-spot in the pond and hid there for the day. When night came, she left the cave and went back to the bush.
One the fifth day, Emily was out of oranges. She left the bush, ate a few bugs, and went back to the orange tree. There were a lot less oranges left now. She tossed some rocks up to make the oranges fall. She collected as many oranges that could fit in her backpack and went back to the pond to hide for the day.
"She's going to need some dental work after eating all those oranges," one capitol resident said.
Violet and the other mentors where watching in a special viewing room with sponsors and their families.
"My money's on that girl from 2." One women said. She was sipping some sort of purple bubbly drink.
"I think the boy from 2 will win." Said another.
"The girl from 12 has a shot at this too." Said another. "Would be the first girl from 12."
Violet got up and sat next to Haymitch. "What about you? Both your tributes are still in this."
"I think this will be a very interesting game, no matter who wins." Haymitch said.
Violet looked down at the ground. "Katniss is a very impressive. She is sparking change."
"Careful talking about that with all these capitols around." Haymitch said. "And don't look so down. I've noticed your tribute out there. Emily. She's pretty resourceful. You gave her some good advice."
Violet smiled a little. "I gave them both good advice. One listened. Now she's in the top 10."
"I'm surprised the game makers are letting her have all these calm days. Must be leading up to something." He said.
Violet looked up at him worried.
"It is unwise to form attachments to these tributes. You will learn this over time." Haymitch said.
Violet sat up. "I knew her long before all this. She's my brother's best friend. We've spent time together. Had sleepovers. She's-"
"She belongs to the game now. If she survives, she'll be the capitol's. That's all we all are." Haymitch said. His flask leaned out of his jacket pocket.
Violet made a face. "You've been drinking."
"Always." Haymitch said. He took out his flask and raised it up as if to say, 'cheers.'
In the victor's mansion at 10, Clara was playing restaurant with Jerome and her stuffed animals. She has a miniature kitchen and table set in her room. She pretended to own a restaurant and serve Jerome a mixture of food.
Downstairs, Liam was watching the live coverage of the game. When Emily went to sleep in the game, Liam lied down on the couch and closed his eyes.
On the 6th day in the game, there was an explosion. Emily heard it from her hiding spot in the pond. She jumped upon hearing it. A minute later, a canon went off. 9 tributes left.
Marvel - district 1
Cato - district 2
Clove - district 2
The male tribute from 3 - district 3
The other red-haired girl - district 5
Emily - district 10
Thresh - district 11
Rue - district 11
Katniss - district 12
Peeta - district 12
A few minutes after that, two more canons went off. Emily covered her mouth. Something big must be happening, she thought. Three canons in one day. Only seven of us are left. Maybe the careers are being taken down. Maybe there was a mutiny at the careers are killing each other. maybe... the careers are winning. Maybe they found Katniss. Emily sighed quietly, knowing she wouldn't get her answers until that night when they reveal the fallen tribute in the sky.
That night, back in her usually bush, she saw who had fallen. Marvel from 1 was dead. One less career to worry about. The guy from 3 and Rue from 11.
Emily didn't know if she shoud be happy or not. Poor Rue. She was only 12. Who the hell would kill her? Unless she died eating something poisonous or fell from a high elevation. But on the other hand, a career was out of the picture. Seven people left... How long before they start looking for me? Cato AND Clove are still alive. Clove wants to kill me so badly. I... I can't beleive I even made it this far... Katniss is still in the game. Maybe she can beat the careers but then what? One of these tributes is going to kill me. She moved her head over and tried to get comfortable on the dirt floor. No one has seen me for days. Maybe I can win this... if everyone else kills each other or poisons themselves.
Liam watched from home looking more hopeful than ever.
