Ghosts Of Days Gone By
Sorry, not sorry
It has been a month since Summer took her "vacation" that was bestowed upon her by her Father. She actually had a decent time off if she would say so herself. She didn't get on social media, she visited her best friend, and she got to talk to an old friend and play catch up. Not to mention: she got to do things around the house that she wanted to get done for awhile, so it was nice to get that accomplished.
Summer was now walking in the crispy summer air residing in Orlando, Florida. She was dressed casually in a gray leopard print tanktop, ripped denim capris, and white converse on the way to visit the Performance Center. She was going to check in and see how things were going.
Entering the Performance Center where NXT was airing live on Wednesday nights, she put her Gucci sunglasses on top of her head and walked inside the building, smiling and waving to talent that she passed. She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw a very familiar face. Part of her wanted to run the same way she came in.
Adam was standing in the hallway, his left arm covered in a sling. He was talking to Adam Cole, Finn Balor, Johnny Gargano, and Candice LeRae. Speaking of those four: they were Summer's favorite talent on the NXT roster. She wished she was there when Finn was on the main roster because she would've done everything in her power to make sure he was booked as a top tier superstar. All of that aside, Summer was shocked to see Adam at the Performance Center. She'd thought he would be home resting his surgically repaired triceps.
She tried her best to discreetly pass them, but it didn't work when someone gently tapped her shoulder. Summer turned around and came face to face with Adam. There were no signs of the four NXT wrestlers anywhere. She wondered how they disappeared so fast. She crossed her arms, her dark brown eyes piercing his green ones.
"Can we talk?"
Summer shook her head. "What is there to talk about? I thought you never wanted to see me again."
"About that…." The Rated R Superstar ran a hand through his hair with his free hand. "...I'm sorry for how I acted and for what I said. You didn't deserve it."
"That's a nice gesture, but I don't have anything to say to you."
"Summer, c'mon."
"You wanted me to leave you alone, so I am doing what you asked of me." She turned around to continue her previous journey of finding Hunter, but Adam gently grabbed her arm. "What do you want from me, Adam?"
"I want to just a moment to talk to you."
Summer hesitantly nodded. "Okay, fine."
"Let's go outside," Adam offered. He led the way to the parking lot. He and Summer found a nearby bench and sat down on it.
"You wanted to talk… so talk," Summer insisted.
"I wanted to let you know that I had nothing to do with the harassment accusation. I would never accuse you of something like that."
"It's just coincidental how you fussed me out and then this accusation was made. You were really angry about your injury, so you could've said something to Dad without even realizing it."
"I haven't seen Vince since the RAW before my injury and I only talked to him once, but he was checking on me," Adam stated. "And yes, I was angry, but you were the only person I took my anger out on. I felt horrible afterwards."
"I am believing you didn't do it. But, who would hate me so much that they would accuse me of doing something so despicable? I don't get it," Summer frowned.
"I don't know Summer. As far as I know: you're the majority of people's favorite McMahon. I just want you to know that I didn't do it."
"I believe you, Adam."
"You do?" A hint of a smile appeared on The Rated R Superstar's face.
"I do."
"Thanks. And one more thing, Summer…."
"What?" Both of Summer's eyebrows quirked in interest.
"I'm sorry."
"It's okay, it's all water under the bridge now. I'm sorry that you got hurt and that your comeback came to a halt."
"I appreciate that, but that's not what I'm referring to," Adam stated. "I'm sorry about breaking your heart all those years ago. I should have listened to you whenever you said that you and Punk were just friends. I guess I let the paranoia get inside my head."
"Oh," Summer responded. That was unexpected. Even though she wanted an apology all those years ago, it was still nice to hear it now just the same. "Well, thanks, but it's all in the past."
"You were overdue for an apology on that matter." He was ready to propose to her by that point, but he had always had the assumption that she had moved onto Punk because of things he was told. But, after hearing her on the Bella Twins podcast, he finally knew the truth. She was trying to tell him back then, but he had been too paranoid and angry to hear her out.
"You and Punk? Seriously?!" Adam was pacing around back and forth in the living room of the Asheville apartment he was sharing with Summer. They were renting out an apartment for the time being until their house was finished being built.
"Adam, for the millionth time, there is nothing going on between Punk and I! We are just friends!" Summer exclaimed.
"Then why am I hearing rumors about you and him getting close backstage?"
"What rumors?"
"Someone has been telling me that you and him have been seen getting quite cozy."
Summer crossed her arms. "Who's this someone feeding you bullshit?"
"It doesn't even matter."
"It does matter, Adam! Someone is telling you things that aren't true."
"There's a truth to every rumor, Summer. So there must be something going on between you and Punk in some sort of capacity."
"But, there's not Adam."
The Rated R Superstar completely disregarded what Summer just said to him. "I've retired from wrestling, so now you want to find someone else in the company you can sink your claws into."
"What are you talking about? I didn't ever date anyone in the business until you," Summer countered. "By the way, you were the one who pursued me. You asked me out on a date not the other way around."
"It's just funny how Punk is the WWE champion and you're getting all cozy with him. I had just won the World Heavyweight Title when you said yes to going out on a date with me. I was also in the main event picture during our relationship. I bet if I wasn't so high on the card, you wouldn't have even given me the time of day."
"Adam, you sound crazy. You know I interact with everyone on the roster regardless of their status in the company. You were the one who had asked me out so I was interested because no wrestler had never shown any interest in me until you. I don't know what I did for me to be the object of your affection, but it gave me huge butterflies knowing that a wrestler I harbored feelings for was actually paying me attention."
"So, you're basically saying that you moved onto Punk because he's paying you some attention? That's good to know."
Summer rubbed her temple with the palms of her hand. "That is not what I'm saying! I don't like Punk like that. I have never harbored any feelings for CM Punk. I'm trying to say that you were the first and only wrestler that I've loved.
"Now, you're saying that you don't love me anymore?"
"Adam, you're completely missing the point of everything that I'm saying. I loved you then and I love you now."
"I love you too, Summer, but I think we need to end this relationship."
Summer's brown eyes immediately filled with tears. "You don't mean that."
"I do mean that. I just don't want to have to deal with this drama anymore."
"But, there is no drama."
"My mind is always going to wonder about you and Punk and if there's something going on between the two of you," Adam argued. "Besides, all we've done lately is fight, and quite frankly I'm sick of it."
"The only reason we're fighting is because you're believing some bullshit someone is telling you over your own girlfriend."
"I don't have a girlfriend anymore, so your argument is irrelevant."
Summer's jaw dropped. "So, this is how this is going to be? Fine. Fuck you!" She grabbed her purse and coat and walked out of the apartment, fresh hot tears streaming down her face.
Adam grabbed the ring box that was in his back pocket and threw it against the wall. He plopped down on the couch and violently ran his hands down his face. He wondered if he just made a horrible mistake breaking up with Summer.
At least he wouldn't have to deal with her potentially leaving him for someone else. He went ahead and nipped that in the butt.
"I thought you were supposed to be elsewhere?" Summer turned around to see the one person she despised standing right in front of her.
"I'm here, so what? It's none of your business."
"It's my business when you're talking to my Husband."
"I hate to burst your bubble, but your Husband was the one who talked to me first," Summer countered.
"Adam wants nothing else to do with you. He wants you gone just like I do. He says you have done nothing but follow him around," Beth responded, crossing her arms over chest. "Who do you think told me to file that harassment complaint?"
Summer's jaw dropped. "It was you…and Adam…"
"That's right," The Glamazon nodded. "He told me all about how you would go out of your way just to interact with him, but he didn't want to say anything to Mr McMahon. So he asked if I could do it and as his loving wife I happily obliged."
"I don't believe this…." Summer muttered.
"You didn't think Adam wanted you around for real, did you?" Beth saw the mortified look on Summer's face, so she decided to add more salt to the wounds and mock her. "Oh you did! That's so cute."
Adam was walking through the Performance Center when he stopped dead in his tracks. His worst fear came true. Summer and Beth were face to face with each other. Summer looked absolutely mortified and Beth looked like she just won the jackpot. Summer turned her head to look at him. She was giving him a cold stare.
"Summer…"
"Don't talk to me ever again!"
"What are you talking about?" The Rated R Superstar quirked an eyebrow and his raised his free arm up in defense.
"No wonder why you have a clear conscience. You had your wife do your dirty work for you. I actually believed you, but you had me fooled."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Don't you play dumb. You had her make the harassment accusation against me."
"I didn't…"
"You want me out of your life so badly that you would go to great lengths to make that happen. Well, congratulations! I am officially done with you. I was actually stupid enough to believe your apology. I should've left you blocked on social media."
Adam frowned. "Summer, please let me explain…"
"No, there's nothing to explain. From now on, if you have any wrestling business to take care of, you can just get your wife to speak with my Father." With that said, she walked out the Performance Center wiping fiercely at her eyes.
Adam ran a hand down his face with his free hand. "I hope you're happy with yourself."
"How can I be happy with myself when my Husband is in love with someone else?" Beth motioned to the door that Summer just exited.
"For the millionth time, I am not in love with Summer," Adam argued. "But, I don't want to talk about this here. We'll talk about this later." Adam had come to a conclusion and he was going to wait until he and Beth were behind closed doors before he shared what conclusion he came to.
