Adam knew this was going to hurt. He'd told her, a little warily that he may have mentioned to Drew that they were going on a health kick and she had run with it. Anything to get him eating healthier. Not that Kim was perfect but she was streets ahead of Adam. The man ran on junk food, take-out and beer. How he stayed in half way decent shape astounded her.
"So tomorrow we start the fertility diet?"
"The what now?" He really needed to engage his brain before he spoke. He had no one to blame for this but himself.
"No more alcohol, gluten, overly processed food, diary, unfermented soy…"
"Damn, I just love unfermented soy." He mocked her. Adam hated soy, soy milk, tofu or edamame and refused to eat them or buy them and he could rant about it for hours if given the chance and Kim knew well enough not to get him started on Vegans. It always started with 'I have nothing against people who chose not to eat meat BUT…'
"I'm shocked." Kim clutched her chest and then watched him carefully as she delivered the knock out blow. "…and coffee."
"No."
"No?"
"No." Adam repeated with finality. She knew that was a bridge too far and Adam reminded her that getting pregnant wasn't the problem and if she wanted to give up coffee she could but he wouldn't be joining her on that little crusade. He also added that they were only pretending to get pregnant, they weren't actually planning parenthood.
"So we can just pretend to have sex?"
"No."
"You really like that word don't you?"
Adam turned his head and smiled cheekily. "Yes."
"We also aren't eating pineapple, peaches, crabs, sesame seeds, papaya, liver, sprouts and those potatoes that are sprouting in the cupboard have to go." Kim continued despite realising that it was a fruitless conversation because his mind was still way back on the no coffee thing. "And you will enjoy the green smoothies I'm going to make you."
"Wow. Did you do anything else today?"
Kim pointed to her still swollen ankle. "Can't walk remember? You pushed me over and wrecked it."
"You know someone is actually going to believe I pushed you and report me to the police for domestic abuse?" Adam reminded her. Not everyone saw the funny side of it or got the joke.
Having spent the past two days confined to the house Kim was giddy. Firstly they had a physio appointment and then dinner with Jay and Angela. Adam had left work early to come pick her up and take her to the Physio and hopefully they'd get some good news. It seemed to be getting better but she really wanted to know how much longer she had to stay off it.
Adam gratefully accepted the beer that Jay offered and didn't say a word about how comfortable Jay looked here when he felt Kim's finger dig into his rib cage. "So how's the foot?"
"Getting there. I have those mind numbingly boring physio exercises to do but I can start to walk a little bit." Kim took the glass of wine that Angela had poured for her.
Adam politely reminded her that she "Better make the most of it Kimberly. Seeing as you've got us on this health kick from tomorrow."
Jay spluttered. "You on a health kick. That I'd like to see."
"Whatever it takes to sell this." Adam tapped his beer against Kim's glass. "I mean it's the only way isn't it? There is no half-assing it." He winked at Kim and she found it hard to supress a giggle at the surreptitious look that Angela gave Jay.
Kim sat up at the small bench while Angela finished preparing dinner while the boys took to the lounge. Not that it was all that far away and they could still hear them but Adam was drilling him about life back in Chicago. He wanted to know what Kev was up too and how the newbies were going. He really missed Kevin and was hoping they'd have some use for him in the near future or they could get back to Chicago for a few days so they could catch up.
They had also worried that they'd be replaced with missing a beat and they wouldn't have a job when they got back. Even though that wasn't the deal Voight made with Organized Crime.
"So you think you are ready for the next bit?" Angela stood in front of Kim and started pulling the salad together. "After the weekend?"
"I am. We talked about it, dealt with it and judging by Lizzie and Drew's interest I think we can safely say we have them on the hook, at least a little. I mean we've got a few weeks of building that side of it. It's not like I can suddenly be 'pregnant' tomorrow is it?"
Angela wasn't completely sold on Kim's readiness for this next part but had to put faith in her officers. Jay didn't see an issue either and they were so far down the path now she just had to suck it and see. It wasn't even that she doubted that they wouldn't get the job done, she was worried about the emotional impact of it all on Kim who she had come to really like. Both her and Adam, they were good police and people she could see herself being friends with well beyond this case.
As soon as Kim hopped off the stool Adam was up off the couch and helping her to the table. They had such an easy familiarity about them but they weren't all over each other. They didn't need to be in constant contact to show they obviously cared deeply about each other. Angela liked that about them.
"So, what about Sally and Joe? They gonna get married or what? I think a nice engagement might shake things up a little?" Adam was not very subtle. "I'd at least like a party. We could have it at our place, this joint is a touch too cosy." He nudged Kim. "We are good at this party thing now aren't we?"
"I am, you're not. So no, we are not hosting a party." Kim shut him down.
"This is not about us." Angela reminded him. "We are just making sure you two don't run off into the sunset. I'm not sure we'll ever get you out of that house."
Kim looked thoughtful for a moment. "If it was closer to Chicago you wouldn't."
"Not enjoying the slower life of suburban Wisconsin?" Jay laughed.
It was nice for a change of pace but neither of them where quite ready for the slow lane just yet. Domestic life wasn't bad though, they were enjoying that part. "What about you Jay?" Adam shoved another piece of meat into his mouth and chewed. "Enjoying domestic bliss?"
"It has its highs." He looked quickly at Angela and she blushed and Kim noticed it.
"I bet it does."
Adam was a little worse for wear by the time they left as he and Jay certainly enjoyed being themselves for a few hours. They had found a wrestling match to watch on TV and Angela was a bit stunned listening to them screaming and yelling. "Do they actually like this?"
"Oh god no, they have no idea what's going on." Kim laughed and dug her fingers into Adam's leg to get him to be quiet. "They just use it as an excuse to get drunk and yell shit at the TV. Don't be fooled into thinking either of them have even the slightest clue." Kim pinched him again. "Adam tone it down."
"Huh? What?" He looked genuinely confused.
Jay wasn't much better and completely egged him on and it was pointless trying to stop them. Sometimes you just had to let them be because you just exhausted yourself and ended up getting pissed off and they didn't care. Usually they had Kev with them as well and Kim avoided boy's night like the plague for that very reason.
Adam wasn't completely toasted but certainly giggly and unhelpful and very handsy on the drive home. Kim slapped his hand away several times as he groped her leg, lifting her skirt up and tickling her bare thigh. "Hey…" he whined when she pushed her skirt down again. "…what's the bet Jay and Angela are bumping uglies right now?"
"Adam." Kim gasped.
"What? You know it's happening."
Kim looked at him from the corner of her eye. "Oh, guaranteed. Just no need to be so crass about it."
"I'd like to bump uglies with you right now." She had to grabbed his hand and squeezed his fingers to get him to stop groping her. If she'd let him go, god knows where his hands would be.
"Would you just?"
"Please." He begged. "Pretty please."
"Adam, begging is not cute. Not cute at all."
He agreed, it wasn't cute but didn't care and told her as much. He wasn't above begging if he got what he wanted, and seeing as his plans for the night in the cabin didn't come to fruition and he had been the perfect gentleman since but after a few beers he was feeling a little bit toey. In the two months they'd been here he had certainly been enjoying the closeness they shared. It had been very reminiscent of the early stages of their relationship when they couldn't get enough of each other.
"Do you really think they are hooking up?"
Kim giggled. "At it like rabbits. Angela has that glow about her."
"What's this now?"
"You know that new relationship glow. Sex whenever you can get it, cute little looks, blushing, gushing and all that."
Adam rolled his head to the side and watched Kim in the dark, only lit by the street lights and headlights of passing cars. He thought she looked beautiful from any angle. "You've got that glow."
"No I don't. I've got the crazy in love glow. That's different."
"I think I prefer that one to be honest."
"Me too."
Adam chewed his bottom lip for a moment. He was running his fingers back and forth over her knee. "Hey, are we really not eating pineapple?"
"How did your mind get there?"
"Well you know how sometimes you have to think of something totally benign and boring to stop, you know, arriving at the party too early…"
"Oh god, stop." Kim shrieked and pushed him playfully in the arm. "So pineapple does that to you?"
"Yes. At the minute yes." He tapped her leg. "I'm not giving up coffee."
"It's like a pinball machine isn't it?"
"What?"
"Inside your head."
"No, just trying to distract myself. My uglies are screaming to be bumped."
Drunk Adam was a pain in the ass. When he got a bee in his bonnet nothing could distract him. He made her laugh constantly, she didn't realise how much they laughed together until it wasn't happening anymore.
They weren't wrong though, they did have that crazy in love glow and were enjoying every minute of it.
And neither were they wrong about Jay and Angela and they were doing everything possible to ensure Sally and Joe could pass off their relationship as the real deal.
"Are you heading back to Chicago tonight?" Angela asked him as soon as Kim and Adam left.
"Wasn't planning on it."
Angela sat close to him on the couch, tucking her legs up underneath herself and leaning into him a little. "Do you think they are okay?"
"I think Adam and Kim are better than okay, I think this the best thing that could've happened to them, in a weird way. I mean not the baby thing but it's helped them deal with it and that's a good thing." He draped his arm over her knees. "Anyway enough. Can we not talk about them?"
"What did you want to talk about?"
"Who says I want to talk?" Jay leant in close. "Do you?"
Angela shook her head. "Not really." Running her hand over his cheek she looked at him intently. "We are okay with this right?"
"Whatever it takes?"
"Don't you fall in love with me." She warned him playfully as she feathered light kisses along his jawline.
"Never."
