Chapter 11: Hooty's Moving Hassle

Mason walked down the Bones-borough Bazaar with his friend Luz. The duo laughed as they talked about their favorite book series. "I still can't believe Malingale turned out to be a spy for the Good Witch Azura's side. I totally thought he was going to betray them."

"Yeah, he might off. Had it not been for Azura winning his blackened heart." Luz said, placing her hand on her chest.

"You mean in a romantic way? I never saw them like that."

"No, I meant as like brother and sister. You know since Malingale lost his sister during his training to become the next incarnation of the evil sorcerer-king."

"You take this stuff way too seriously." Mason gave Luz a blank stare.

The duo walked down the street waiting for their 'teacher' to get her elixir.

"Can you believe Eda let her supply get so low that she had to risk a day trip to the bazaar."

"I know right. But, I saw it coming. That girl is obsessed with hexes hold'em." Mason had tried to tell her not to get addicted to that game.

The duo continued walking until Luz nudged Mason.

"So Mason, you gotta be honest with me." Luz began looking at Mason with a sly smile "Do you like Willow?"

"Uh, yeah I like Willow. She is a very respectable girl."

"No I mean do you like like her?"

Mason began sweating "Uh, Luz what brought this on?"

"I've been thinking about it since you saved me from Hexside, and in my personal opinion you'd make a really cute couple." Luz said, gushing with matchmaking pride.

"Uh, Luz. I-i don't l-like W-Willow like that."

"Oh really? You gonna tell her that to her face?" Luz slitted her eyes and had a mischievous grin.

"Yes, whenever I see her again." Mason stammered, trying to wipe the sweat from his face.

"Okay, well here's your chance. She's right over there." Luz Pointed behind Mason's back.

"What!? She's here?" Mason turned around saw both Willow and Gus with their heads down. The reason for this was the pink-skinned three-eyed girl Boscha was talking down to them. Mason stormed toward her. Wanting to protect His 'friends' yeah that's what they were… friends.

"Oh Willow. Look at how pathetic you are. You can't do magic, you're weird, unattractive, and your only friend is this little kid. How can you stand to look at yourself in the mirror." Boscha said, laughing at the two Witches as they had their heads down.

"Hey! What's going on here?" Mason called walking up to Willow and placing his hand on her shoulder "You okay Honey Bee?"

"Yeah, I'm fine." She said with sad tone.

Mason saw through her deception. His hand began making it's way down to her side. "Willow you shouldn't lie to me. Cause those who lie to me get a visit from the tickle monster." Mason tickled Willow's side and she let out a burst of laughter.

"Mason, stop. th-that tickles!" Willow called.

Boscha just stared in confusion. But that soon turned to rage. She clenched her fist and wanted to claw Half-a-Witch Willow to pieces. But, she calmed herself. "Mason?" she said sweetly. "You're so mean."

"Oh and how am I mean?" Mason said holding Willow protectively.

"Teasing this poor girl by playing with her emotions."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, you act like you love her." Boscha had to fight back a growl at the L word but she kept composed. "I mean you obviously can't love Willow."

"Why not?" Mason said, he was getting visibly agitated.

"I-i mean look at her. She's ugly, she's fat, and she can't even do spell circles correctly. Me on the other hand I am beautiful, rail-thin, and I'm one of the best witches in Hexside."

"That's enough!" Mason shouted charging the shocked Boscha. Following her as she back pedaled. "Willow is twice the witch you are!" Mason jabbed his finger at Boscha.

The witch hit her back on the wall and looked at Mason. She glared at him and said, "Why do you care! She's a freak, a loser. I'd make a way better girlfriend then her. You shouldn't throw away your social life for Half-a-Witch Willow."

"Stop calling her that!" Mason slammed his fist into wall just an inch from Boscha's head. "Willow is the kindest and sweetest witch I've ever met. Say you're sorry."

Boscha shook in terror but she stiffened immediately. "No! I shouldn't be made to apologize for telling the truth."

"You want the truth? Well let me tell you the truth." Mason began moving uncomfortably to her face. "You know what you are?"

"Fabulously rich, charming, and the prettiest girl in school."

"You're a mean girl cliché. You are a future train wreck waiting to happen. One day you are going to wake up old and alone, even your looks will have abandoned you. Then and only then will you realize that you are a meaningless speck with no real friends." Mason growled at her and began to walk away. He made it a few steps before he heard a couple sobs. He turned around and saw Boscha with tears in her eyes.

"Yo-you're m-m-mean!" She ran away holding her eyes with her hands.

"Wow. That was unexpected." Mason felt bad and looked at Willow who looked at him with concern.

"Mason," she began her tone rife with worry. "You didn't have to be that mean. That was a bit too far."

"Willow she was picking on you. I was just trying to help."

Willow Placed her hand on Mason's shoulder and looked him in the eyes. "You don't have to stoop to their level. You can try to be the better person."

Mason's eyes soften and he began to well up in tears seeing Willow the girl he had a crush on. The first girl that he ever loved this way look at him like he was a monster. "Yo-you're right. I should go apologize." Mason walked away from Willow and went to find Boscha.

He found the Pink-skinned girl being comforted by the dark-skinned girl Skara and the other green-haired girl Amelia.

"Shush, shush, I bet he didn't really mean it." Skara said, trying to comfort her friend.

"Yeah, he's probably going through a lot right now." Amelia added.

Mason felt terrible he rubbed his arm in guilt. The realization that he had let his anger get the best of him again made him feel terrible. When Mason got near Boscha he was slapped in the face by Amity who came out of nowhere.

"Ow." he said grabbing his cheek.

"It's what you deserve for what you said to Boscha. Are you just an asshole!?" she shouted, glaring at Mason.

"I just came to say I'm sorry." Mason held his hands up and began to walk away.

"Wait!" Boscha howled, tears coming out of all three eyes. "Amity, can I speak with you for a minute?" She said in a voice barely above a whisper.

The two girls huddled and in hushed tones they talked about what Mason can only guess. He did catch Boscha and Amity sometime taking sideways glances at Mason.

Mason meanwhile tapped his foot wondering what they were talking about.

Eventually they broke their huddle and Amity came up to Mason. "Okay, Boscha forgives you."

"Tell her I said thank yo–"

"On the condition you agree to come to my moonlight conjuring."

"Is there any other way I can say I'm sorry. Flowers? Chocolates? Hell I'll get her a card. Just don't make me go to a conjuring." Mason pleaded, he knew what the moonlight conjuring was and also knew that most likely he'd be the only boy there.

"Nope, it's either that or Boscha will never forgive you." Amity flashed daggers at Mason with her arms crossed.

"Fine, I'll go."

"And I want you to bring the flowers, chocolates, and card as well. Just so Boscha knows you're sorry." Amity added, smirking.

Mason nodded in agreement and walked back to check on Willow and Gus. Mason saw them talking with Luz. "Hey, Luz. I guess you heard what happened?"

Luz nodded solemnly and gave Mason a hug "It's okay I know when you get angry you don't think. I still love you." Luz was crying tears.

Mason returned her embrace and said, "Thank you, I love you too Luz."

Willow walked up to Mason and placed her hand on his shoulder "Did you apologize to Boscha?"

"Yeah, but it came at a heavy cost." Rubbed the back of his neck.

Willow kissed Mason's cheek "I'm very proud of you, Sweet William."

"Th-thanks Willow." Mason was flushed and inside he was extremely happy.

"So, with that unpleasant business out of the way. Mason, Would you like to come to our moonlight conjuring."

"I'm sorry Luz, I can't."

"But, why." Luz moaned, already getting her puppy dog stare ready.

"Remember the heavy cost I mentioned?"

"Yeah."

"Well it entailed that I go to Amity's moonlight conjuring. I'd love to go to yours but Amity insisted."

"Okay, I understand Mason. See you tomorrow." Luz digged him in the arm ran toward Eda who was wrapping her business with the shopkeeper and looked unsatisfied.

Mason sat on a bench, hanging his down. He sat there for a few more minutes before he heard his pocket mirror ring and he opened it. He saw it was Kikimora. "Yes, what is it."

"Ah, Mason I have great news for you. The Emperor has ordered me to give you a whistle that will instantly teleport aid to you if you so need it." she said, bursting with excitement.

"Why would I need that? Why wait until now to give it to me?" Mason asked.

"The Emperor said the Titan decided that it was time you had one." She said.

"Okay, I'll back in a minute." Mason got up from his chair and walked to where his escort was waiting. I hate being spied on. Mason thought, every time he knew when these 'spies' were watching Mason. He always had his sensory spells on him.

Mason would never be taken advantage of again. He refused to let them get the best of him.

––––––––––––––––

Mason scratched at the sleep wear he was wearing. It was made of fancy cotton and it inched something fierce. He looked down at the white and black pajama's and hated how much he looked like he fit in this rich neighborhood.

Mason came upon Blight Manor which was situated on a hill. It was almost as big as the castle but was more ornate in it's décor.

Mason walked up the slope of the hill. He came upon the front door which was decorated with images that Mason presumed were of the Blight Families past victories. He grabbed the gold plated knocker and rapped on the door three times.

The person who came to answer was a huge ogre dressed in a butlers suit. "Can I help you?" It said in a guttural tone. His voice conflicted with what his profession was supposed to be.

Mason decided against making fun of this guy or asking any questions. It would be wise to not anger the Giant doorman who can crush you with the pillars the house is built on.

"Uh, I'm here for the conjuring night slumber party." Mason said, timid.

The huge ogre reached into a drawer beside him and pulled out a list. "Name?"

"Mason Fairweathers."

The ogre grabbed a bell and rung it. "Name?"

"Uh, Mason Fairweathers?"

The bell's ring sounded out again and the ogre nodded. "This way, Mr. Fairweathers."

Mason followed the ogre and looked at the extravagance on display. Gold layered everything. Pictures of family members set in platinum plated frames which had jewels embedded in them. He saw that even the servants attire was of a quality equal to Masons pajamas. I guess rich people are same in every dimension.

Mason was lead to a huge pair of ivory doors and he swore he heard the dim chuckles of laughter. Into the lions den. Mason thought as he gulped.

The ogre opened the door and revealed that Amity's bedroom was just as lavish as the rest of the bed room. Silk bed sheets, wool carpeting, and posters of all the coven heads including one in the center of the room that was of… Lilith.

"Milady you're last guest has arrive." The ogre said in a dignified tone that more befitted his station.

"Thank you Alphonse, That will be all." She clapped him away.

Mason walked in and was visibly uncomfortable with all the attention. Any time he dared to look up at one of the girls they just placed their hand to their mouth and did a cute chuckle.

"Ah, Mason now that you're here, We can get started." Amity clapped her hands garnering the attention of the many different girls who were doing different activities waiting on him.

Why were they waiting for me? Mason thought I don't like this.

"Fetch the match maker box." Amity demanded, ordering Skara and Amelia to grab it.

"The who what now?" Mason was confused as he watched them pull a giant box that had intricate carvings of hearts and other romantic scenes etched on the red wood.

"Now the match maker box has the power to detect match capability. If you are a perfect match the box will glow green, if not then it blares red. Whose first."

oh shit, this is bad Mason thought, he now knew why Boscha had invited him.

As if on cue Mason felt his hand being intertwined by another.

"Oh hey Boscha. What's going on." Mason stammered.

"Oh nothing, just waiting for you and me to test the box. Right he–" She was about raise Mason's hand until he pulled out of bed roll a box of chocolates.

"Wait! T-to say I-i'm sorry for saying such mean things to you I would like to feed you these chocolates." Mason held out the box and was visibly sweating.

"Re-really!" Boscha said excited "Okay! Masey feed them to me."

Mason did just that, one after another "Hey, slow down Boschy, savor them." Mason tried to delay as much as possible.

Boscha let out a small moan after she finished the last of the chocolates. "Those were good and apology accepted. Now it's time to play the match maker game!"

"Wait! Don't you want to smell your flowers or read your card?" Mason asked, hoping and begging that she would take him up on that offer.

"Yeah, after the game silly. Now stop stalling." Boscha said before looking at Amity "We're next!" she called dragging mason to the front. She squealed with joy as she placed her finger inside the box "Your turn Masey."

Mason stuck his finger in the box there is no way we're a perfect match I mean I'm nothing like Bos– the box lit green drawing collective gasp followed by the girls making a sound as if Mason were called to the principal's office.

Boscha began having a spasm of excitement moving in an erratic manner. "Yes! Yes, yes! I knew it! We are perfect together. Oh come here Masey." Boscha immediately pulled Mason's face to hers and began kissing his cheek repeatedly.

Mason tried to push her away but she was too strong.

"Stop playing hard to get Masey. I just want to show you how much I love you." she cooed going into another round of kissing his cheek.

"Alright you two love birds cut it out, it's time for the conjuring." Amity called. "Everyone gather around in a circle and present the token."

Amelia the green haired witch showed a small voodoo doll "Right here Amity."

Everyone did as Amity instructed and they sat in a circle around the 'token'

Boscha sat next to Mason and whispered in his ear "I know humans don't have something like this where you're from. So if you get scared just hold onto me. I'll protect you." She nibbled on Mason's earlobe which made the boy shudder.

"Begin the chant." Amity exclaimed, starting to talk in a language Mason could barely understand.

Luckily, Lilith had taught him all the tongues of the Boiling Isles including this so he could piece together the rhyme.

When the moon reached it's zenith a strange magical energy enraptured the room and flowed into the doll.

Mason felt the power tingle within and it filled him with joy and contentment. He was powerful, he was safe. Then the power began to burn and his eyes began to inch. Then his vision went black and he was in the darkness. He tried to scream but he couldn't hear. He was alone with total sensory deprivation. Then he saw a light. It expanded and enfolded him and he saw Luz, Gus, and Willow being tied together inside the Owl House.

"Hooty, Let us out!"

Before Mason could hear anything else a bright flash of light and Mason saw them. The demon hunters. A group of mages known for hunting monsters for profit. Mason saw one of them lead his tied up friend toward the cliffs and throw them off.

You must save them. They are chosen of the six as are you. Save them!

––––––––––––––––

Mason awoke with Boscha's lips wrapped around his mouth. She was blowing air into his lungs. Mason muffled scream awoke the pink-skinned girl from her trance.

"Oh Mason you're okay." She said, looking relieved.

"What the hell were you doing!?" Mason yelled, wiping his mouth.

"I was giving you CPR. You know because you fell unconscious." Boscha explained, looking down ashamed.

"Yeah, she may have just saved your life. so I think a thank you is in order." Amity added adopting her signature glare.

"Th-thank you. I-i have to g-go." Mason shot up and gathered his things.

"Mason, are you okay?" Boscha asked placing her hand on his arm to stop him. "You were screaming when the conjuring began.

"I just need to go I'll be fine." Mason pulled his arm away from her and hastily exited the manor house. He made his way to the cliffs he saw in his vision. Being pulled by some unknown Magics. I don't know who or what this voice belongs to. But, if my friends are in danger then I'm gonna be there to save them.

Mason used magic to enhance his speed and he was like a comet soaring on the air toward his goal. It wasn't long before he came upon his target. He saw six of the demon hunters with their leader looking at a tied up Hooty who had large legs growing out of the foundation of the house. He saw that his friends were being led to the cliff. I gotta get there now!

The demon hunter led them to the edge of the cliff.

I'm not gonna make it, I'm not fast enough he surged through the woods into the clearing he was almost there.

The demon hunter seeing Mason shoot toward him pushed Luz, Gus, and Willow off the cliff.

Mason screamed in rage and leveled a spell-enhanced punch to the man's face sending him flying into the sea. Mason looked down at the cliff and his friends hanging on a branch via their rope. "Hold on! I'm coming!"

"You think you can just mess with us and get away with it? Well you're dead wrong!" the leader of the demon hunters exclaimed. "Charge him boys, he can't take on all of us."

The four demon hunters remaining followed their leader and summoned their magical weaponry.

"That's where you're wrong." Mason immediately parried one of the men's weapons using a magic shield to knock the large sword off balance and using a spell that summons a gust of wind to push him off the cliff.

"Surround him, Skin'em Alive!" the leader said.

His men followed orders to the letter and formed a circle around the young Mason. They were each readying themselves to avenge their fallen comrades.

"Whose first? I'll take you all on!" Mason called launching himself at the leader who swung at him with a sword. Mason used a witches barrier to block it. But, the sword cut through the magic and if Mason hadn't had a speed enhancement on him he would have been sliced in half. He danced along the edge of the blade with a flip over the leaders head.

"Cheeky little twerp! Guess you didn't expect my sword to cut through you're little spells, did ya, Ha?" he gloated turning just in time to catch a spell enhanced punch causing him to reel back in shock.

Mason used a spell circle to cast a Spell Razor at the leader who cuts at it with his sword slicing it in twain.

"Can you stop interrupting my monologues? I'm trying to banter with you."

Mason used his speed to appear in front of the leader and leveled a spell enhanced kick to his head sending the demon hunter flying. "Yeah, no."

The leader picked himself up and snarled at Mason "What are you idiots standing around for? Kill him!"

His four remaining men stood shaking "Boss, I don't know. This guy seems tougher then the children. Maybe we should leave."

"Dammit I gave you an order. Now, attack!" The five men shot at Mason with equal speed.

The boy dodged the best he can but these men were just as fast as him and far more combat trained. Their team tactics were what was throwing Mason off. A radiant bolt of white flame knocked Mason off his footing.

"He's open, Attack now!" the leader called slicing his blade at Mason, hitting his legs letting out a small gash of blood.

The four goons were armed with hammers and maces respectively. The one with the mace slammed it's head towards Mason's but the boy had dodged only to be smacked in the gut by a hammer shot making him retch. The two others use their weapons to knock the air and fight out of Mason, Smashing his injured legs with their blunt instruments.

Before Mason could rise he was kicked by a spell enhanced kick.

"How do you like it when you're on the receiving end, Huh?" The leader taunted already speeding toward Mason with another kick, sending him careening to the edge of the cliff.

Mason got on all fours and tried to rise on his two feet but only falls back to his knees.

The five men chuckle as they look Mason over. "You were a pretty tough fight kid, but, we're still gonna have to kill you."

Just then Mason heard the sound of a vine rising and he looked up to see Willow with her plant magic looming over the cliff and looking down

"Stop hurting my friend!" she said sending a vine to attack the leader who barely dodged. Willow lowered herself to coddled the weakened Mason "Oh my Sweet William what did they do to you?"

"Oh hey Honey Bee are you okay? This? It's nothing. They hit like a bunch of babies." Mason laughed as he coughed up blood which landed on Willows uniform "Oh, sorry about that."

Willow cradled Mason's head and shushed him "It's okay you've done enough. We'll take It from here." Willow got up but was grabbed by Mason.

"No Willow. These guys are too strong. We need to go. I'll cover our escape, if need be but we have to get you, Luz, and Gus out of here."

Willow nodded her head and looked at Mason with smile "You don't have to be alone anymore. Luz told me everything and I truly feel bad for what happened to you. But you have Luz, and Gus, and well… me to watch out for you."

"I-i... Thank you Willow, that means a lot." Mason leaned on Willow as she helped him to his feet.

"You're not gonna get away that easily." The demon hunter said as he bound toward Willow and Mason.

Willow caught the man in a vine and threw him clear across the plains. "Let's go!"

Willow and Gus helped drag Mason toward the owl house and met Luz who was trying to undo Hooty's bonds.

"Oh, I knew it was a bad idea to do a conjuring without Eda's permission." Luz said.

"Luz, Gus hold my hands." Willow said after laying Mason down on the side of the Owl House.

The three friends as Willow instructed and there eyes glowed blue as Hooty began to radiate with the same energy.

The house broke it's bindings in a snap and scooped up the four friends and placed them on it's yard.

"Good job Honey Bee." Mason said, looking back at the befuddled bounty hunters.

"Ha ha see you later jerks." Gus called,

Luz and Willow stuck their tongues at the demon hunters.

Mason saw a chain shot toward Willow "Honey Bee! Look out!" He pushed Willow out of the way and got grabbed.

"Mason!" Willow called before looking at Luz "We have to turn around."

"No! Keep going I'll be fine!" Mason yelled as loud as he could as he was flung back toward the deranged hunters. He lay on the ground broken and bleeding looking up at his enemies.

"You cost us our bounty. Now you're gonna pay." The demon growled.

"If you're gonna kill me just do it. You bunch of useless witcher wannabees." Mason spat on the leader's feet.

The leader raised his sword but was surprised when Mason pulled a whistle to his lips and blew it, making no sound. "What was that supposed to accomplish? Ooh, are you calling your doggie to save you? Well, we'll kill him too." the leader brought down his sword but before it makes contact a burst of blue flame melts it down to slag.

"Oh no, they sent you?" Mason groaned straining his to head to see her. The bane of his existence… Lilith.

"What's wrong Mason? I thought you being the Emperor's favorite meant no caster could defeat you." she said, obviously happy with her apprentice being on his last leg "Well now I can show you what a real witch can do." She then summoned her staff and in a single spell circle shot the demon hunters into the river with a summoned storm's worth of wind.

Mason looked up at his mentor weakly, his vision beginning to blur.

"You know I just had an idea." She started with a wicked smile "I'm sorry my Emperor but I was too late. He was too far gone and he expired before I could get him to the Healer's Coven." Lilith then placed her sleeve over her eyes feigning tears "Oh, I was just beginning to like him too."

When Mason looked up at her, he no longer saw Lilith, He saw his sister, he saw Andria. "I'm sorry Andria, it's my fault you're gone. I'm sorry." Mason closed eyes and let the final sleep take him.

–––––––––––––––

Mason was back in his room he was crying and he remembered why. Today he had started preschool and his mom forgot to pick him up. He stayed there an extra hour until the school finally called his dad and he had to pick him up.

Mason's dad argued with his mom and she claimed the reason she was late was because Andria had just won first place in her track meet and she had taken her daughter to get ice cream to celebrate. Mason was crying because it was this day he realized his mom didn't love him.

Andria came into his room placed her hand on his back. Mason remembered throwing a punch at her and she took it. Never even told their mom. Andria was too good for Mason.

"Mace I will always love you. No matter what you do." She had said and gave him a hug holding him in her arms until the tears stopped flowing. "Someday when I'm older I want my children to be just like you and I want you to be there for them. Will you do that Mason."

Mason was about to hear the answer he gave her but when he spoke it sounded like a car crash and the image distorted showing the cut up body of Andria after the accident and Mason saw his mothers vengeful glare.

"You're a loser Mason and you'll never amount to anything. Goodbye."

"Andria!" he screamed in the void.

––––––––––––––––

Mason shot up awake with Bandages wrapped around his gut and he heard the smooth beats of the machine that checked his heart rate. When he turned his he saw it was some kinda magic device with a gremlin head. He was on a hospital bed and he looked around it was a sterile environment.

"Ah you're awake." A voice called and a fish like woman walked up dressed in the uniform of the Healers Coven. "How are you feeling?"

"Like I was hit by a truck." He joked.

"I don't know what a truck is. But I do know that you're mamma's gonna be glad you're okay." she said smiling.

"Momma?" Mason asked.

"Yes the woman who brought you here. You have to tell me who stole the heart of coven leader Lilith?"

"What? Lilith isn't my mom?"

"Oh so she is you're big sister, then?"

"No! Why would you think that?"

"Because she stayed with you throughout the night." the nurse said placing a few magical tools on a table near Mason.

"She did?" Mason said, stunned. Why did Lilith stay the night with me?

"She sure did. She made sure you were nice and warm. Whenever you're heart rate would skyrocket –which happened a lot throughout the night– she used magic to calm you. There were even a few times you were whimpering and she just rubbed your head and sung you a lullaby. Are you sure she's not you're mom or sister."

"Yeah, I'm sure." Mason looked on at a poster of the emperor's coven with Lilith on the front of it. "I-i'm her apprentice."

"Oh that makes sense. Well you can't find no better teacher then the head of the Emperor's Coven. You get some rest now. The healers will reapply treatment in an hour and then you should be able to leave."

Mason looked at Lilith's poster one last time and mouthed the words "Thank you." before falling back asleep.
