"Dad...psst...! Hey, Dad...!"
Inuyasha groaned as he groggily opened one golden yellow eye, his vision blurry for just a moment before it began to adjust, revealing Ichiro standing in front of him, the acrid scent of panic permeating off of him. That's when the half-demon glanced over at the alarm clock.
3:06 AM.
"Ichi, what are you doin' in here?" Inuyasha asked with a bit of irritation in his voice. "It's 3 in the mornin'."
"There's something wrong with Sanka," Ichiro whispered with a slight urgency in his voice, and almost instantly, all grogginess left Inuyasha as he sat up in alarm.
It wasn't very long before he yanked on a pair of jeans and pulled on a white tee-shirt, then hurried into Yamako and Sanka's room, where he could smell the sourness of sickness and sweat. He found his daughter lying in bed, sniffling and weeping with the occasional shivers. Yamako sat on his bed, worriedly watching his sister before he glanced over at his father as if to quietly ask what put her in so much pain that she'd cry.
"San?" Inuyasha asked as he walked up to her, gently cupping her cheek. "Bugga-bug, you okay?"
"My throat hurts, Daddy...!" Sanka said in a choked voice, prompting Inuyasha to turn on the light before he gently pulled his daughter's mouth open. He could definitely see that it was red and swollen, especially in the back where her tonsils were in plain view...and he could see these yellowish-white spots forming on them. He then put his hand over her forehead while placing his free hand over his own.
"Shit..." he cursed, quietly before he looked over at Ichiro. "Ichi, help your sister get dressed."
"Right, Dad," Ichiro replied as he went to go pick Sanka up from her bed while Inuyasha hurried back into his and Kagome's bedroom, where his wife still remained asleep.
"Kagome," Inuyasha called, gently, as he shook her arm. "Kagome, wake up, babe."
"Huh?" Kagome muttered as she began to stir. "Inuyasha?"
"Listen," Inuyasha said. "I gotta take San to the hospital."
"What?!" Kagome asked as she sat up. "What's wrong with her?!"
"Her throat's got some kind of infection," Inuyasha said as he grabbed his red coat with the brown faux fur collar, "and she's burning up, too."
"Do you need me to go with you?" asked Kagome as she prepared to get out of bed.
"No, stay with the rest of the kids," Inuyasha said as he slipped his coat on. "Someone's gotta stay here and hold down the fort for me."
"Dad, San's ready," Ichiro said as he came in, holding his 5-year-old sister in his arms as she wore her pink Hello Kitty jacket and magenta boots. The poor thing looked so miserable, tears of pain running down her face, and Kagome felt like she just wanted to hug Sanka so tightly and make the pain away.
"Okay, come here, baby," Inuyasha whispered as he took his precious little bugga-bug in his arms. "It's gonna be okay."
"You're gonna go to the hospital, now," Kagome said as she stroked her daughter's hair and rubbed her ears. "It's gonna be okay, sweetheart."
"Mommy..." Sanka murmured weakly as she was soon carried down the stairs as Inuyasha put his boots on, then he grabbed his keys on the nightstand, opened the door, and headed to his truck, where he strapped Sanka into her booster seat, then got in the driver's seat and pulled out onto the curb before driving off down the road. All Kagome could do was watch as she and her sons stood in the driveway, wearing their nightclothes, which was not exactly suitable for the chilly autumn night...but they didn't care.
"Mom?" Yamako asked as he held his mother's hand. "Is San gonna be okay?"
"...I sure hope so, Yama," Kagome whispered. "I really do."
'I feel like I just woke up into a nightmare,' she thought.
An hour later, Kagome got a call from Inuyasha, who said that Sanka had to go into emergency surgery to remove her infected tonsils. The doctor said she had to stay for at least a week-and-a-half, but Kagome was fine with that. She was just glad it was nothing worse.
I had this in mind for a while.
