Chapter Thirteen

Bella's POV

I was trying to stay strong. I hadn't wanted to say much to Chris because I would start crying or kill him. I didn't want to scare Brandon. I loved that little boy, even if I hated Chris now. I understood why he was mad, and I felt horrible. They were never coming back, and it was all my fault. Edward took my hand.

"Sorry, Bella," he said. "You really cared for them, didn't you? Well, Brandon anyways." I nodded. Nessie sat down on my other side.

"Hey Mom, you still have us, you know," she said. "We're not going anywhere." I nodded, she was right, but I still felt bad. Chris's sister had come to visit once, and she had been horrible. I really didn't want Brandon anywhere near that lady, but I felt powerless. There was absolutely nothing that could be done about it. It was probably best that Brandon never got to know me, know us, because he was like any normal person. He thought vampires were scary. I had had this vision, though, of Brandon getting to know us, and sort of becoming like a part of our family. But to keep him as safe as possible, it was best if he left. It just hurt. A lot. He was like my do-over, in a way. I never got to see my daughter grow up, so my son was my do-over. And I never even got that. I heard the back door open and smelled awful wet dog. Jacob.

"Hey, Nessie, do you want to go for a walk?" he asked. She glanced down at me, as if she wasn't sure she should leave or not.

"Go," I said, squeezing her hand. "It's fine." She got up and went over to Jake. I was glad they were happy, at least. To be honest, I wouldn't have wanted anyone else for my daughter. Edward watched Jake as he walked out.

"He needs to watch his thoughts around me," he said. I didn't smile.

"What was her first word?" I asked. I wasn't sure why I wanted to know, I just did. It was one of those things that bothered me that I didn't know. I was her mother, and I didn't know what her first word was.

Edward smiled. "It wasn't a word, it was more of sentence. I think it was something along the lines of 'Where's momma?" I think she was maybe three weeks old. She just talked to me with her thoughts for the longest time. DId you know she can share her thoughts with anybody? It's kind of like the opposite of I what can do. I'll have her show you later," he said. He talked about her like he was so proud of her. He should be. She seemed like an incredible young lady. My little girl. Whether we want it to or not, life goes on. Six years went by. I always kept my son Brandon on the back burner of my mind, wondering exactly what he was doing, and what was happening to him. After two years, Ness and Jake got married. She let Alice go crazy planning the thing, and it was beautiful. A year after that, Nessie had two adorable twin girls. She named them Luna and Racheal. My granddaughters. They were the strangest little things. They could phase when the were two years old, and half the time it was like dogsitting, because they were so young they couldn't really control it.

I loved them, though, and so did Edward. They didn't really look alike, at least. Luna had Nessie's hair and big green eyes, and Racheal had dark brown hair and chocolate eyes. She was like a mini-me. They would come and visit on the weekends, because Nessie and Jake lived out in the reservation and not with us. It was on one of these weekends when the girls were three that they came to visit that my life changed again.

I heard the car door open and shut, and two little pairs of feet and two little heartbeats running up to the door. I got up off the couch, calling to everybody else that Ness and Jake were here. I opened the door and kneeled down to hug my granddaughters. "Hi, girls, how are you?" I asked. Luna pressed her hand to my face and showed me images of what they had been doing all week. Like Nessie, she could share her thoughts through touch. Racheal could read minds, so she just nodded along with what her sister was showing me.

"Hi, grandpa!" shouted Luna, and ran over to hug Edward, Racheal on her heels. They were really fast, too, even for the crazy hybrids that they were. Nessie had only been pregnant for three months or so, they grown so fast. Then it had just stopped, for some reason, and they grew at a normal rate.

"Hi, girls," said Edward. Ness and Jake came in the door then, looking exhausted. Like vampires, for some reason, their daughters didn't sleep. But they did. That was why Edward and I watched them on the weekends, so Jake and Nessie could actually sleep.

"Hi, Nessie," I said. "Hi, Jake." Nessie just nodded at me, yawning. I laughed. "You guys can go, if you want. We can take care of them from here." Nessie smiled.

"Thanks, mom," she said, and pulled Jacob out the door, looking thoroughly relieved. I was about to go ask Luna and Racheal what they wanted to do when I heard a another knock at the door. Confused, I opened it. To my utter and complete surprise, there stood nine-year-old Brandon, a suitcase in his hand and forlorn look on his face.

I hope to write a sequel to this soon.

Thanks for all the positive feedback everyone!
