This chapter has more points-of-views than any chapter in this story so far. Perhaps this is because of the events that run simultaneously in this chapter alone, or it could be because the chipmunks and chipettes will split up into three groups. Either way, you the readers can expect slapstick humor throughout this chapter.
Chapter Eleven:
Separated
JASPER AND HORACE'S POV
Jasper was fast asleep on the couch. Horace, meanwhile, slept on top of a warm blanket. Just as Horace dreamt about a warm breakfast, a loud click was heard from the hallway.
Sitting up, Horace asked in slight bewilderment, "What was that sound?"
As he roused awake, Jasper told his brother, "It's nothing, Horace." Moving off from the couch, Jasper changed the subject on him. "Come on. Let's get the job done."
"What's your plan?" asked Horace, curious.
"Well, I think a friendly game of cricket ought to knock that Halfling out cold," said Jasper, picking up a racket from a nearby wooden table.
Horace, following Jasper's lead, grabbed a large shovel that stood next to a stone fireplace. A few moments after Jasper and Horace made their way out of the cobwebbed parlor, the two Baduns caught a glimpse of the last red squirrels climbing up the stone stairs to the second floor. The two Baduns peered down at the floor, a few feet away from the last few steps, where they found two chubby chipmunks chasing each other around in circles. Although they were in shock to see two of the talkative chipmunks had escaped the study, Jasper and Horace charged down the hallway towards the rodents. Before he knew what hit them, Horace was whacked on the face by the study room door. A few seconds later Jasper, keeping his gaze fixed on the two chipmunks smacked his face at a statue.
ALVIN, SIMON, AND THEODORE'S POV
Seconds after Jasper and Horace were knocked out cold, Theodore and Eleanor bounded towards their brown shoes. Soon after the two chipmunks sniffed the Baduns' shoes, they were reunited with Alvin, Simon, Brittany, and Jeanette who rushed down the stairs in time to see Jasper and Horace ram into the study's door and the banister's statue on the stair. Soon after they realized the Badun brothers were unconscious, the six chipmunks laughed merrily. Just as they realized Frodo was standing by the door, the chipmunks and chipettes heard Jasper and Horace rousing awake seconds later.
At once, the chipmunks and chipettes announced, "Scatter!" The group then split up in three directions. Alvin chased after Brittany; Simon led Jeanette up the stairs; and Theodore followed Eleanor down the first staircase.
FRODO'S POV
After he fled underneath the nearest staircase, Frodo heard Jasper's footsteps approach the stairs. As he moved further under the stairs, Frodo listened for the sound of boots creaking wood floors. He was nearly caught when the boots stopped in front of his hiding place. Before Jasper's head looked underneath the staircase, Frodo heard Horace's loud voice calling Jasper over towards his direction. Frodo watched the tall man as he took one last glance at the shadowy part of the stairs before Jasper moved away from Frodo's hiding place. Frodo waited until Horace and Jasper were at the top of the stairs, before sneaking out from underneath the stone stairs. Once the coast was clear, Frodo returned to the study and began searching for any kind of proof that would claim Cruella DeVil and her henchmen had stolen the red squirrels, chipmunks, and chipettes.
SIMON AND JEANETTE'S POV
The moment Simon and Jeanette reached an open doorway, they fled over the threshold and entered a flat rooftop, where Kipper the terrier was watching all the red squirrels climb down the gutters that surrounded the outside of the mansion. When the two chipmunks approached the Airedale terrier, Kipper looked at Simon and Jeanette with a concerned look in his eyes. Whether Simon and Jeanette knew it or not, Kipper was curious where Simon's brothers and his friend, Frodo Baggins, was inside the mansion.
Just as Simon darted towards the doorway, Jeanette stopped him. "Where are you going?"
"We have to go back," said Simon with a determined look on his face.
"Why?" asked Jeanette, confused and concerned.
"Alvin and Theodore are still in there. We can't risk losing them and your sisters to those Baduns, or Cruella." He added in a sharp tone, "Come on!" Facing the dog, Simon asked him in frustration, "What?"
Kipper barked at Simon and Jeanette, as if to warn them to hurry.
Taking the warning seriously, Simon told the terrier, "Don't worry about us. If we aren't back in an hour, come and find us… all of us."
Kipper barked once more in reply, giving the chipmunks an understanding look.
"Come on, Jeanette," said Simon in a serious tone, leading the chipette back through the open doorway, towards a small flight of steps that led out to the third floor.
ALVIN AND BRITTANY'S POV
"Okay Alvin, it's ready!" called Brittany, charging out of a narrow room through a partially-opened, wooden doorway.
A brief moment after Brittany was reunited with Alvin, she and him were temporarily blinded by a bright light. Alvin jerked Brittany by the arm and dragged her back against the wall with him. The two chipmunks watched Jasper as he stepped over the threshold and fell inside the narrow room.
"Come on!" cried Alvin, gesturing to the nearest hallway.
"Do you think the trap worked?" asked Brittany, chasing him.
Softly, Alvin muttered, "I don't know. I haven't heard my –" He was cut off by a loud clonk. In seconds, he and Brittany watched a bowling ball as it rolled across the wood floor. Happily, Alvin remarked, "Yes indeed! That's what I was waiting for!" Returning to their escape plan, he cried, "Now come on! We've got another Badun to watch for," he added, "and, hopefully, set up a trap for him."
o-o-o
Halfway down the hallway, Alvin and Brittany were spotted by a bright light, pointed in their direction. A moment after Brittany found Simon and Jeanette, Alvin ran inside a dark room, littered with furniture that was covered in white sheets. Before he could come up with a plan, Alvin watched his shadow quickly grow larger and longer. After he dodged a pair of beefy hands that nearly clamped hold of his furry body, Alvin fled straight towards a narrow wardrobe. As Horace joined the chipmunk, he watched the chipmunk scurry towards one of the wardrobe's doorknobs. A brief moment after Alvin moved away from the wardrobe, Horace pulled open the doors, forcing brooms and mops to fall onto the dirtied floor. An iron board toppled out of the wardrobe last, clonking Horace flat on the head. Alvin chuckled happily from the open doorway, as he scurried out of the old sitting room.
Just as Alvin entered the hallway, he was ambushed by Simon, Brittany, and Jeanette. All at once Simon, Jeanette, and Brittany asked Alvin dozens of questions. Before Alvin could answer any of their questions he, his brother, and the two chipettes were nearly captured by Horace. While Simon and Jeanette figured out another brief plan for escaping the Badun, Kipper charged at Horace from behind, knocking the man from under his feet. In haste, Kipper barked at the chipmunks and chipettes to climb on his back. Although Alvin wanted to argue some more with his brother Simon, he couldn't refuse the dog's warning snarls and growls. Once the two chipmunks and two chipettes were ready to travel, Kipper charged down the hallway, right as Jasper groaned in pain and agony.
THEODORE AND ELEANOR'S POV
"Theodore, where are we? Shouldn't we find the others?" asked Eleanor, concerned.
"I know, but let's look for food first." In encouragement, Theodore told her, "It's all right, Eleanor. I'll watch your back."
"It isn't my back I'm worried about. It's my front, and how do you know where food is?" asked Eleanor, doubting Theodore's confidence and stomach pains.
Theodore sniffed the air, and then said with bright eyes, "Bingo!" He then cried, bounding into the next large room, "Come on! We've found food!"
"Oh… Theodore," said Eleanor with wary eyes.
After a few more yards across the kitchen floor, Theodore and Eleanor approached a series of desk drawers, leading straight up to a long wooden counter. Seconds into climbing up the wooden drawers, Theodore and Eleanor heard footsteps clambering down the passageway.
Ignoring the sound, Theodore told the chipette, "Come on Eleanor. It's either food or…"
"Theodore, what if your brothers are looking for us?" asked Eleanor in a serious tone. "I know my sisters wouldn't give up on me now."
"Well…" he was cut off by the sound of dog barks. Mesmerized, Theodore admitted, "I know those dog barks. It's…" He then forgot he was hungry, as he cried out in delight, "Kipper!"
Just after he leaped down from the middle drawer, Theodore scurried towards the Airedale terrier, with Eleanor slowly chasing after him. As Theodore was ambushed by Alvin and Simon, Eleanor met up with her two elder sisters, Brittany and Jeanette. Their meetings did not last long, for Kipper barked fervently at the chipmunks and chipettes to climb up on his back. After doing as they were told, the chipmunks and chipettes were taken by Kipper out of the kitchen and through the hallway, where they began their search to find their newly found friend, Frodo Baggins.
