I don't own Twilight
Chapter 14
Edward pinned me between himself and the console as we dashed towards the cove like bats out of hell. The wind whipped violently at my face as I watched the speedometer increase to breakneck speeds. Similar to a lighthouse, the windows of the manor and dock illuminated our path though I trusted Edward to know where he was going. I avoided looking at the clock on the dial, seconds passing would be enough to frighten me "She disembowelled me with those nails of hers." It may have been three years, but those nails hadn't become blunt in those years neither had the penchant for being sadistic.
"When we get in Bella, the door on the right will take you down to the basement. Grab Angela and head back for the boat, wait for me." An emotion crossed his face but I couldn't place it, I hoped he was trying to portray comfort. Despite rapidly approaching the dock, we parked smoothly. I found myself and Edward on the gang way in a blink, moving towards the door we'd exited earlier. A small coal door stood next to it sunken down three steps "Go down there, take a right and it will be bring you to Angela's room." His voice finished seconds after his body had gone.
Taking three steps at a time I raced towards our old 'apartment'. Edward may not have been worried about Rosalie's threat, but I was petrified. Thankfully the door was slightly ajar as I burst through tripping over something with brown hair.
"Angela!" I screamed scrambling to my knees above her. She lay on her back eyes closed but breathing, face marred by a fist sized bruising patch above her left eyebrow and shattered glasses. I moved to grab her shoulders before my basic first aid kicked in; no shaking her could make the damage worse, I needed Vampire blood. I scoped the room wondering where she kept her stash. It had to be near as she gotten it so quickly the first night I arrived at the manor and was put under her charge.
"Looking for this?" Rosalie's voice was just audible above the slam of the door I'd just come through. Dressed in a sink crimson kimono dress and spiked heels, she towered above us shaking two vials of blood. Her whole body dripped malice as she smiled down at me dropping both vials simultaneously. They smashed on impact splatting her feet and calves "Oops." I jumped to my feet and threw myself at her without a plan. Unsurprisingly she caught my arms with a laugh "Time for Edward to repent his own sins." She swung us round so my back was to the wall and threw me, much like Edward had done to her the first night. I didn't feel the impact, only watched the darkness streak across my vision.
"Bella wake up." A panicked voice groaned right next to my ear. It took effort to open my eyes, the pounding in my skull and back danced along to my heartbeat. The dim light of the room created stabbing sparks in my vision. The noise that left my mouth was more wounded animal than human response "Oh thank god." I recognised the whisper as Angela's soft tone "We need to move."
"Don't make me move." I begged not even testing the strength of my limbs, they'd move my head and back not so much. Angela's hands moved to my head and though her touch was featherlight, it was enough to make me feel nauseous. Over my wretch someone else groaned "Who else is her-" A hand clamped over my lips sealing the last few letters in my mouth. I forced my eyes back open to see her face. God did it sting but I saw her finger pressed to her mouth before following where it pointed. A coffin lay in the corner of the room the chains that had once been wrapped around it were pooled at the side. Fear froze all my blood as the lid slowly began to itch off.
"He chained my dad in silver and locked him in a coffin in the cellar." The threat Edward had used to make Leonard take me shopping. I had wondered over the days since his imprisonment if Edward had told him that to keep him inline. After all Edward hadn't locked him away down here with his dad but being there watching the lid move, there was no question to who was inside. My frightened eyes darted back to Angela whose who body was trembling. Leonard's dad had obviously been down here some time if he'd not felt our presence with the furious heart beats alone. I wanted to cry at the agony it caused but that would definitely alert us to him. Angela, sure I would be to afraid to even sign, removed her hand from my mouth and lent down to whisper in my ear.
"The doors behind the coffin." Like her body, her voice trembled too 'It leads to the blood room." I blinked twice not risking a nod. If we lived I would need blood of my own behind the pain I could feel some part of my skull was scraping against the other. My first aid training screamed all possible probabilities at me.
"I can't move." I repeated "I think my skull is broken." She nodded solemnly vision darting between me and the now motionless coffin. The lid was completely off but teetering on the edge. Maybe he had sensed us already and was deciding his next move. I couldn't be sure but it was unlikely he was going to try and pin us both after being without blood for so long.
All three of us were silent for probably a minute but it felt like hours. Both Angela and I looked around the room 100 times but the door was the only way out. I knew what had to happen and I wasn't going to like it one bit. The pain I was already in was about to triple but our best chance of escaping would, I hoped, be worth it.
"Chains." I mouthed at Angela. She frowned at me but that was the only reaction she had time to do before I left out a pained cry. The lid clattered to the floor as if it were a leaver lifting Leonard's father up. I didn't dare glace at Angela again, I prayed she'd understood me, instead closing my eyes. There was no way in hell I was going to watch him come towards me. I'd never been a fan of horror films despite Jacob's insistence on watching them during 'Spooky Month' and now I was literally living Night of the fucking Living Dead.
He was slow and not silent, the bones within him clicking from years of immobilisation. Every movement wafted a sickly sweet smell like uncovered meat left in the fridge a little too long. I gaged and cried out again at the knock-on effect of searing pain. A grumble left him, a excited laugh maybe but I wasn't sure, before quickening his pace. Like a lion finding a wounded gazelle he homed in on me, whether or not Angela had moved.
"Please." I whimpered to Angela or him I wasn't sure but followed it with "Don't please." Hoping the Fear would keep his interest. The smell and his presence engulfed me, forcing my eyes open to take him in. Grey cracked leather like skin bloomed purple in places and clung to the bones within his body. His eyes and nose were sunken with the only hair hanging limply like black rats tails from his head. I let out a genuine scream making him smirk excitedly. There was something I recognised in his smirk, a déjà vu almost but Angela's outline shimming across the wall behind him reminded me what I was doing "Please." He answered by pinning my wrist against the stone floor and tearing into the flesh.
Though the second time in one night I'd been bitten they were like night and day. I regretted my decision to play decoy instantly, not that I'd had another choice. Edward's bite had been a painless twitch. This bite was frenzied, excruciating and ripping my wrist to shreds. There was nothing clouding the pain just pure and unfiltered torture. The sounds leaving my mouth would only be rivalled in hell as I thrashed in his grip. The pain in my skull eclipsed by the one spreading across my body as it worked to keep my organs going through the drain. I glanced at his face, somehow expecting him to be phased by my screams but found his eyes closed in ecstasy. Above the sunken features eyebrows had began to grown and darken. Scraggly hair softened with renewed life reaching down into his scalp lessening the leather effect. Despite the effects on his body, one human wasn't going to be enough to restore him Angela needed to hurry up. As I thought it, chains jingled in the background unfortunately he heard it too, eyes snapping open to stare into mine with pure malice. I recognised him then; Edward had lied to Leonard and me; it was Aro he'd trapped in the cellar.
Discarding me, Aro turned to face Angela slowly whether it was to lull her into a false security or his condition neither of us knew. It may have been seven years, but she recognised him the minute he turned a gasp slipping from her mouth. He didn't let on if he recognised either of us. Despite the absolute fear drenching her body, Angela hugged the chain tighter to her chest. It looped around her arm and down to the floor like a poisonous snake. Aro didn't make the first move, all three of us suspected he was still too weak, but Angela did. She threw the chains towards his face like a little lasso. Aro moved just in time, no quicker than a human but just enough. The loop jangled as it fell to the side of him; just within my reach. Whatever clothing he'd been wearing when Edward imprisoned him had rotted into tatters exposing parts of his leg to me. Knowing I had to act quickly, I grasped the chain despite the pain shooting up my arm from his bite. Aro lunged towards Angela as I yanked the chain. Though my strength had weakened from blood loss, it was enough for the silver to touch his bare skin.
Whether it was the purity of the silver or his weakened state, the chain cut right through to the bone. The tell-tale steam exploded from the wound followed by his roar of pain as the chain continued to cut through him severing his leg at the shin like a hot knife through butter. Unable to right himself he toppled backwards onto me, his upper body colliding with my stomach and chest. Angela stared horrified at the scene clearly having never seen what silver can do to a vampire. My own howl of pain as his fall jolted my body snapped her back to earth. She tugged more of the chain into a bunch before throwing it over him. His scream and curses grew as he was pinned against me to melt. The smell of burning leather and hair overwhelmed me, I wanted to throw up but his weight stopped that causing my chest to constrict with every breath. Through the haze of smoke, I could make out Angela's outline moving up and down. Being deafened by the screams, it took me a second to realise she was jumping on coffin lid. The weight on top of me began separate as the chains separated parts of Aro's body. Though quiet now, he wasn't dead and we were far from safety. I watched as one of his hands began to move on its own like Thing from the Addams family. It would have been funny had it not began to scurry across the floor towards me. I heard a crack from across the room just as his fingers wrapped around the base of my throat, fingertips digging in for a better grip. The pain and already having had a lack of oxygen sapped my will to fight. I lay still, accepting my own fate with closed eyes. His grip was even weaker than I expected but still stronger than mine.
"I love you Edward." I rasped aloud with my last breath, hoping somewhere in the manor he'd be able to hear it.
Not a second after the words left my lips the pressure on my throat disappeared as did the pressure from Aro's body on the rest of me.
"Bella?" A voice asked in the darkness.
I smiled "Is that you Grandma?" Grandma Swan had died in my early teens and other than Edward, I hoped she'd be the one to greet me on the other side.
"No Bella open your eyes." I did as told to find myself in the same room with Angela looking down over me worry plastered to her face and shakes racking her body "I-I staked him. He. He's dead." To say I breathed a sigh of relief was an understatement. Any breath was one of relief now I wasn't being strangled anymore "He just went poof." Angela's hands flew from her body in an over the top way. She was in shock "Like exploded into dust as soon as the wood hit his chest. I killed him…"
"He was already dead." I croaked but it became a groan as the pain ebbed back reminding me I was in a bad way. The crunch in my head came back and I noticed a new stickiness to my skin "And we're still alive, that's all that matters." I glanced down at my wrist where the stickiness turned out to be blood. The bite marks had opened up when I'd yanked the silver chain. It was just a trickle but considering how much he'd sucked out of me every drop was bound to count. Her eyes fell on it too causing her to jump up from where she was crouched momentarily forgetting what she'd done.
"I'm going to go get my vampire blood, hold on Bella." Somehow, she managed to steady her voice for my sake.
"Rosalie destroyed them before she knocked me out."
"Both bottles?!" I went to nod but ended up retching as an answer instead.
For a few heartbeats she was silent, it seemed she was accepting my dire situation "His bloods on the wood."
"How much." I found myself asking whilst trying to block out the thought of what I'd need to do.
"Enough for you to be able to move with my help." I could almost hear the internal retch in her voice. I didn't give her a verbal answer; I couldn't trust my voice. Instead I just closed my eyes and opened my mouth.
