"We move in on them today. Cristy has given us enough information for the attack. You all now your role?" Lee asked the group. They were all wearing tactical armor and heavy weapons, ready for war.
"Yeah. Let's do this. I got the wheel." Mike got on the vehicle, where some members of the group got in the back. The others went in a another car, as they made their way towards Atlanta.
"This is the road we took when we first met." Clem told Lee, as she looked out the window. She could see the ruins of the skyline of Atlanta in the distance. It was scary and depressing at the same time.
"Hey Lee, take the roads to the right, the highway is blocked off, no going through." Mike told him, via radios they managed to fix.
"Damn. Plan stays the same everybody, we meet at the corner of the store. Anything goes wrong, radio in." He grabbed a rifle from the back and loaded it. He felt as if he was going to war against a militia. Maybe he was.
In the back of the vehicle, Mika sat against the wall. She had suggested the idea of covering their forearms to the group, to avoid any bites from walkers. She was willing to attack Lanius and his people, but it was a high risk. Nonetheless, she loaded her rifle and sheathed her knife along her leg.
"If we can get to the roof, we can put a lookout there. It'll give us a better view of the area." Zoey suggested. Whatever happens at the Crawler would determine if she would stay with the group or not. She seemed keen on doing so, but the outcome would help her make her Final decision.
"How far are we?" Asked Lee. He kept looking towards the streets. Even though they seemed dead and deserted, he wanted to be sure.
"It should be around the corner, a few blocks ahead. Something isn't right, there should be guards right here." The group left the vehicles behind as they advanced on foot.
"Something ain't right. It's too quiet. No walkers, nothing." Coach kept turning around and looking behind his back, making sure nothing or anyone creeps up on him.
Clementine stickied beside Claire and Carter, who stayed at the front of the group, leading the way. She had her pistol in hand. Although there wasn't anything dangerous around, she was nervous, and her hand was shaking.
"Over there." Dalvin pointed with his rifle towards a body, leaning against a building a few dozen yards away.
"He's still alive." He was barely breathing, with a knife lodged in his lower torso.
"Where is Lanius?" he asked him.
"The... Crawler... Knocked out.." He took several deep breaths as he succumbed to his wounds.
"The Crawler should be in that courtyard. Get ready for anything."
They entered what appeared to be the remains of a large train courtyard. It did appear to be some sort of settlement, it had to be the Crawler. But it was deserted, no one in sight.
Zoey stepped in a pool of blood, which was still fresh.
" I don't like this. There isn't anyone here. We barely made it out last time, why did we come looking for them?"
"Simple. We gotta make sure they don't hurt anyone else." Bonnie scanned the area, but nothing was in sight.
Brendon stayed a bit behind, to guard. The city was completely destroyed from the bombing run when the outbreak started. The city he once called home was no more.
He walked towards the group when something hit him on the head.
"What the-"
"Flashbang!" Coach tackled Brendon to the ground, but the stun grenade knocked everyone to their feet, causing them to be distorted.
As much as Lee wanted to fight it, someone grabbed him by the collar and pulled him forward a few yards. Once the smoke and ringing went away, he finally noticed what was going on.
"It didn't take long for you to find us. Revenge runs deep in your blood, I see now." Lanius stood above a pedestal, in front of everyone. Emile couldn't reach for his knife, several of Lanius' Men were holding them hostage.
"You killed our people. We came to avenge them." Lee growled at them. Clementine could feel the barrel of a rifle on the back of her head, pushing on it.
"We gave your people a chance. We left behind the factory, hoping maybe, you'd get the idea that we gave you a opportunity. Instead, you came looking for what we wanted to avoid."
"If you're going to kill me, do it. But do not waste my time with talk." Emile said.
Lanius hesitated on the next action, as one of his men came running into the courtyard.
"Lanius, we have bad news," he wheezed, catching his breath.
"If it's walkers, you know the drill."
"No. The Zealots are coming this way." he said, in a frightened tone.
"Damnit. Get the-" a grenade was tossed in from the outside of the courtyard, sending the area in total disarray. Lee reached for a rifle and shot several of them as he made his way towards Clementine.
"Who are they?!" She asked.
"I don't know, but I think we just got caught in a fight that ain't ours." he replied, as they took cover behind a old boxcar.
"Let go you bastard!" Brendon was fighting against one of the so called "Zealots."
"We saved you from death. Stop fighting back!" he tried shoving him away, but a stray bullet from the firefight hit Brendon in the neck, piercing it.
"No!!" Amanda tried running towards him, but was held back by coach.
"You can't go out there! We gotta stick together, cmon."
"I'm taking the shot." Claire aimed her rifle at the zealot who was holding Brendon, and fired, killing him.
"Walkers coming in from all directions, Lee. We gotta get out now!"
"We should get out of here before they kill US!" Kate exclaimed.
"Damn it! Back to the cars now!" The group began to sprint towards the vehicles they left a few blocks away, hoping that they were still there so they could flee the horde.
"They came out of nowhere!" Most of the streets were filled with walkers, forcing them to go towards the other direction, further from the vehicles.
"Go that way, we'll go around!" yelled out Dalvin, who was running and shooting the walkers at the same time, as the others.
"That's fucking crazy!"
"It's the only way. We'll get some of them to follow us around. Give you a chance at getting to the rides. Go!"
Half the group split as they kept running down the street, several brunt buildings and vehicles filled the streets, but it wasn't stopping them.
"I see the truck, around the alley. I'll run ahead and get it started," Mika sprinted ahead of the group, avoiding the walkers in her way.
"I'm outta ammo here!" Zoey said in frustration as she grabbed a rock and threw it at them, not doing much.
Lee held Clementine close to him as they closed in on the truck. A sigh of relief came over as he heard the engine roar to life.
"On it, now!" They jumped in the back of the truck as Mika took off, running over several walkers, nearly getting the truck stuck.
"We have to find the others, we can't leave them out there." Kate yelled through the sound of the wind and engine.
"I'm trying, okay?" They weren't seen anywhere. The walkers seemed to be fully concentrated on the Crawler, and the firefight between Lanius and the so called Zealots.
"Hey, over There!" the other members of the group were hiding inside the remains of a bus, with several corpses in.
They got into the truck, and they sped off. Downtown Atlanta was a complete warzone, a area where they did not want to be.
"We gotta get back to the countryside, we didn't get shit over there." said Emile, as he struggled to catch a breath.
"Let's see how far this thing takes" a bullet pierced one of the wheels, and at the speed they were going, caused the truck to flip several times over the asphalt.
"Shit..."Cristy pulled herself out of the truck, looking for the others. They were over the road, still alive. She helped Clementine to her feet, barely.
" Cmon guys, we can't stop."
"We got you now!" Several Zealots came out of the nearby woods, armed. The group instantly grabbed their weapons.
One of them pulled Mika out of the driver's seat, which was stuck, and pushed her to her knees. She had a gash on her head, which she was bleeding from.
" Let her go." Lee growled.
"I don't think we can do that. What I could do is put a bullet in her head, that'll wrap the issue."
"You don't have to do this. We can work something out." Lake tried to reason with them, but to no avail.
"Let us go. We go and you'll never see us again." Claire insisted.
Several Zealots looked at each other.
"Do it."
"No!"
Before he could react, a bullet pierced the neck of the zealot, causing him to choke on his own blood. The group reacted quickly and opened fire.
"Get her out of there, she's right in the crossfire!" yelled out Carter, motioning towards Mika, who's hands had been tied up.
Lee nodded, as they kept firing at them, he ran in and pulled her back towards cover.
"Someone else is shooting them. Looks like we have a trio here.." said Zoey, noticing fire coming from other areas.
Once several of the zealots were dead, a familiar face came out of the woods.
"No fucking way.."
Lanius came out, wearing tactical armor and wielding a rifle, with a few of his men to his side.
"Looks like we came right in the nick of time."
"Give me a good reason why I shouldn't put a bullet in your head right now." said Lee, as he aimed at him.
"You came at the wrong time to Atlanta, Lee. There's a war, between my people, and the Zealots. You see, whatever differences we had, are long payed. No hard feelings." Lee knew he was referring to the deaths of Kenny, Cal and Brendon.
"How do we know you won't just shoot us in the back?" Asked Coach.
"I could have done so a while back. And I didn't. I told you several times how I did things, and I've kept my word. Even though you tried to kill me back at the factory, I forgive you Lee. I understand."
He struck out his hand, waiting for him to shake it. He thought about it several times, eventually agreeing.
"Is this the right idea? They got some of our people killed!" hissed Amanda.
"If it's not a good idea, I doubt I'll live long enough to find out."
"We have vehicles in the back. We'll brief you on the way. And uh, get her a medic." he pointed at Mika, who was in pretty bad shape.
"So these zealots, who are they?"
"Bunch of ex navy and military. But they ain't representing anymore. They're just a bunch of crazy bastards who destroy other groups if they don't comply with what they want. Bastards."
"Where are we going? I thought the Crawler was your base." Asked Lee.
"Was. But we have safe houses throughout the city. Should be safe enough to talk over what has to be done."
"Can't we talk about it now?" Asked Dalvin.
"They have patrols out in the city, our people have managed to figure out their schedule. Whoever they see, they take. That's what we're gonna do. We'll take one of them, find out where they hide."
Clem strayed behind the group. Despite following Lee for everything, she disagreed on this new alliance with Lanius.
"What's wrong?" Asked Kate, noticing something was wrong.
"He tried to kill us. Why are we joining them?"
"I don't think we're joining them exactly. You saw the others out there. We got caught in the middle of it. Cmon, let's not get far."
They entered what was a old mall. Lee came here shopping several times before. Now it was just a shell of its former self. Most of the store had been barricaded, turned into a shelter for others.
Lanius brought them into the room overlooking the city, several stories above. There was a large map in the middle of a table in the room, which resembled the city.
"So, how many Zealots are there?" Asked Emile, as he inspected the area. There were several people that weren't armed, which he assumed to be civilians. As much as they could be.
"Cristy was our eyes in the city. When she left us for you, I felt no remorse. I knew we'd meet again, but working together. We've seen dozens of them, but the exact number we don't know."
"This place is in the open. I'm surprised they haven't attacked yet.." Zoey inquired.
"We're taking the fight to them. We capture one of them, we make him spit out what we want, and we strike."
"We send out a recon team first. They're gonna be ready in a few hours. Once we figure out where their team will be, we get them." Lanius added.
"You seem to have most of this worked out. Why not do this yourself." growled Mika. Despite forming a alliance, she didn't trust him at all.
"We have a greater chance of pulling it off with greater force. And I've seen you shoot. Pretty good I'll say. Chances of living are greater."
Carter motioned for Lee to come over.
"What is it?"
"We're going into a war right here. What's it gonna be that's gonna kill us? Those crazy bastards, or the walkers?"
"Neither. Once we deal with them, we'll get the hell out of Atlanta, and out of Georgia. There's nothing for us here." Lee replied firmly.
"What about these guys? Once the deed is done, they might just shoot us." Asked Mike.
"We'll shoot back, like we always do." replied Dalvin.
"Once they got their bearings, they headed back to the lobby, ready to go on reacon.
" Plan is simple. Follow the scouts towards the point, and take them all out except one. We need that info." said Lanius, who was staying behind. Only Mika and Claire opted to go on the trip. It could be their last, they were aware of it.
The streets were empty, but they could hear the horde of walkers from earlier, on the other side of the city.
" These Zealots try to be organized, but they're pretty predictable," said one of the scouts as they went through a back alley.
"They're organized enough that you can't take them out on your own," Mika replied.
They came out on a street, which Mika recognized instantly. It was the location of a café, where she spent the last time with her parents. She didn't feel guilt or anything, but just being around the area made her uneasy.
"You okay? You spaced out a bit." Asked Claire, tapping her on the shoulder.
"Yeah.. Just got a bit dizzy."
"We'll wait here. They should come around the street in some minutes." They removed the weapons from their holsters and aimed at the street, prepared to fire. It took some minutes for any activity, but it was just birds and the wind.
"It's been a few minutes." said Claire as she walked around the area.
No one else replied, as gunfire began to rain between the two parties. They both took cover behind a brick building as the scouts they were with were almost instantly killed.
"Shit!"
"I don't know what you've been told, but come on out. We're not gonna fire." said a voice from the other side. Seeing that they had no option, they came out, hands in the air.
"You're not part of The Wanderers... He told you we were the bad guys, huh?" said a man, wearing military vestiment.
"That depends, are you?"
"Only against them. Not others. But this isn't the place to talk. If you want to know the truth, come with us."
They had the option of revealing the truth. Was Lanius being honest, or were the zealots trying to unravel the lie he told them? Claire and Mika nodded as they left the scene with the Zealots, heading back to their camp.
