Part 14: Speaking up
The next night the new team avatar went on patrol again. They were parked outside a building having a snack when they heard from the radio about equalists taking to the streets and were armed.
"Alright lets go," Korra said as she, Jak and Bolin got in the back while Mako and Asami sat up front. When Asami got close to the area they noticed all the lights were out and police airships were flying above.
"Why's it so dark out?" Korra asked.
When they reached the part of town the airships were flying over they found a large crowd standing behind barricades while officers stood in front of them and there were polices vans. One officer stood on top of one holding a megaphone, "People return to your homes at once, you are out past curfew," he said.
"We will once you turn our power back on," said a man from the crowd while Jak, Korra, Mako, Asami and Bolin looked confused at the sight.
"Looks like that report was wrong," said Jak.
"Yeah these people aren't equalists," Asami said looking worried.
"Their not armed either," said Mako looking annoyed. Jak then noticed people were still complaining and the officer with the megaphone wasn't calming them down. He jumped onto the van and took the megaphone out of the officers hand.
"What are you?" He asked before Jak held up the megaphone to his mouth.
"People I ask you to please calm down," said Jak as everyone in the crowd was now looking at him, "I know things are difficult at the moment but getting angry isn't going to help either side, so I'm asking you to return home and Ill help to make sure you power gets turned back on soon," he said holding the megaphone down.
The people stared at each other before they all began to walk away. Jak let out a breath before handing the megaphone back to the officer and jumping back down.
"Way to go Jak," said Bolin smiling.
"Thanks but I was only telling the truth," Jak said before looking over at a tent that was set up nearby. He noticed Tarlok standing with some other officers. He and Korra looked at each other with a serious look on their faces before walking over.
"Tarlok," Korra said getting council members attention.
"Avatar Korra, Jak, you and your friends have no right interfering with the law," Tarlok said stepping forward.
"Turn these peoples power back on now," Jak said.
"This is an equalist rally and the people here are dangerous," Tarlok said looking annoyed.
"What rally," Jak said pointing at the area where there was a crowd making Tarlok look surprised, "Those werent equalists they were people who were angry that their power was turned off,".
"They were non benders out past curfew," said Tarlok before looking at Asami. He quickly used water to tie up her arms.
"Hey what are you doing," said Mako.
"Shes a non bender out past curfew and her father is a known equalist," said Tarlok.
"But she didn't do anything wrong," Mako said stepping forward.
"Restrain him and his brother as well," said Tarlok as two officers tied up Mako and Bolin with wires.
"Tarlok," Korra said about to hold up her arms when Jak put a hand on her shoulder.
"Don't, will only make things worse," Jak said as she held his hand.
"Jaks right Korra, don't worry will be out soon," Mako said as he and Bolin were put into the back of one of the vans.
"We'll talk to Tenzin as soon as we can," Korra said as the vans drove away.
Later on the avatars stood at the front desk at police headquarters trying to get answers, "Hey cmon," Korra said before sighing as an officer walked away.
"Jak, Korra I got here as fast as I could," Tenzin said walking over to them, "Is there any news on your friends?" He asked.
"No and no ones paying attention to us," said Jak before noticing Chief Saikon walking by.
"Saikon, a word," Tenzin said getting his attention. The new police chief sighed looking annoyed before walking over.
"Councilman Tenzin, Im very busy at the moment so please make it quick," he said.
"Three of the avatars friends were wrongly imprisoned, I ask that you free them immediately," Tenzin said.
"One of them was a non bender out past curfew, as soon as were sure they're not dangerous, they're free to go," said Saikon.
"They have a right to the normal process like everyone else," said Tenzin looking annoyed.
"Listen if you have a problem with this just take it up with councilman Tarlok," Saikon said.
"Oh I will first thing in the morning," said Tenzin.
"You need to focus Saikon, Tarloks only making things worse," Jak said looking serious.
"Your the worst police chief ever," Korra said.
"Jak, Korra come on let's go," Tenzin said getting the two of them turn around before looking back at Saikon, "But your really are the worst," he said before turning back again, "Ever," he said.
Tenzin took them back to air temple island where Jak and Korra went to Korra's room. Jak sat on the bed while Naga was asleep next to it, "I can't believe this, they did nothing wrong and they were still arrested, you were right Tarloks making everything worse," Korra said looking annoyed as she stood in front of the bed.
"Tarloks annoyed that he isn't getting his way and he arrested our friends because he wasn't happy with what happened with the crowd," said Jak as Korra sat in front of him. He then looked at her shoulders and placed his hands on them before massaging them.
"Where did you learn this," Korra said happily.
"Sorry, I thought it would help you feel relaxed," said Jak as he stopped moving his hands.
"No its alright, keep going," she said before Jak continued, "Thanks for your help by the way," she said smiling at him.
"Sure," he said, "I should probably go," he said about to get up when Korra held his hand.
"Actually can you stay a while?" She asked nervously.
Jak felt his face go warm before he nodded. The two of them lied down on the bed with Korra resining her head on Jak's chest. After a while Korra sat up.
"I'm going to try and talk to Tarlok," she said looking serious as she got Naga to wake up.
"You want me to come along?" Jak asked. Korra smiled before giving him a quick kiss on the lips.
"No I should be back soon, you just get some sleep," she said before she and Naga left the room. Jak looked worried before lying back and falling asleep.
The next morning Jak woke up to a whining sound at the door. He got up slowly and when he opened the door Naga ran to him and he noticed the sad look on the polar dogs face, "Hey Naga, whats," he said before realizing Naga was alone.
"Korra," he thought looking worried as he petted the polar dogs head.
