Castiel was just starting to get used to the sounds of the hospital when he became aware of a new sound approaching his room. He tried to straighten up a bit on his reclined position to see what was happening. A nurse was walking in ahead of another bed, and Cas' breath caught in his throat. "Dean!"
He locked eyes with the battered hunter and got a weak smile in response. "Hey." Dean croaked, seeming equally relieved to see the former angel in once piece.
Cas held his tongue as Dean's bed was locked into place, and a nurse took a baseline set of vitals on Dean. She set his IV up above the bed and set the equipment up to constantly monitor his vitals, as it was already doing for Cas. With one last order for rest for both of them she turned, leaving the room and shutting the door behind her.
Cas turned onto his side, facing Dean who was propped up onto his right, letting his more injured side remain elevated. "You're alright?"
Dean attempted to clear his throat again, but he still sounded hoarse from the tube down his throat earlier. "Takes more than a bit of ice to kill a Winchester."
Cas let out a deep breath, a few renewed tears welling in his eyes. "They said your doctor would be by… to tell me what they were…" He cut himself off, trying to get more to the point. "I didn't expect to see you."
Dean closed his eyes against a twinge of pain as he shifted. Cas finally took a close look at Dean. His head was bandaged, with an interesting looking wire running from the bandage. His cheek sported a nasty cut, but it was held together with a bonding agent and some steri-strips, not even stitched. His legs were covered, but Cas could see the outline of a strange metal brace. They had him on supplemental oxygen, but at least he was breathing on his own. All in all, Dean looked better than Cas did in a lot of ways, despite the fact he knew Dean had gotten it worse.
"I woke up after the surgery." Dean explained. "I guess whatever they saw in my head was good enough for them. Gotta watch it or something… if it does good they get to fix my leg and chest tomorrow. Two steel rods in my leg. I get to be a cyborg." He managed a half grin, but it turned into something of a grimace. "That and work on six broken ribs."
Cas cringed at the sound of that.
"What about you, are you okay?"
Cas nodded, his neck stiffer than it was before as time passed from his last pain medication dose. "Three rib fractures. Broken leg and arm. Concussion. And thirteen stitches on my right leg." he rattled off indifferently.
"Jeez Cas, I'm sorry."
"You were not at fault."
"Do you know what… that was a spell right? Do you know who-"
"I do not. Nothing suspect has happened since we were removed from the vehicle. Although we are now quite far from the site of the accident."
"The car… Cas-"
"It is being towed to a lot by a friend of Jody. Sam saw to it."
"Sam…" Dean trailed off. "You spoke to him?" He sighed, seeing Cas nod. "He has to be beside himself."
"He is en route, and weather dependent will arrive this afternoon."
"Great." Dean groaned a yawn as he readjusted. He refocused on Cas. "I was still pretty out of it when they were talking to me… We're in Rochester?"
"They took us in an Ambulance to a hospital in Chautauqua, then a helicopter to Rochester for a trauma center." Cas recited.
"Were you awake?"
Cas lowered his head in affirmation. "I fell unconscious when we crashed. I woke up shortly after. I could not free us from the car."
"Well, it worked out." Dean sighed.
"They had to cut the doors off." Cas said softly, sounding sympathetic.
Dean chuckled in spite of everything. "We'll fix her."
"I had to use the hat to stop you from bleeding out." He continued with the same tone.
"I'm just glad we're both still in more or less one piece." Dean said firmly. He scanned Cas over again, seemingly trying to confirm for himself Cas really was okay. Once he seemed satisfied, he relaxed.
The former angel found his eyes growing heavy again, and while he didn't fall asleep, he very nearly did. He snapped back when he heard Dean.
"Cas?"
"Mmmh?"
"Did you tell them we were married?"
Cas opened his eyes, looking at Dean, confusion written across his face. "No. I told them we were partners… I figured they'd think we left our badges in the car."
"Partners."
"Yes."
Dean stared at him for a long moment before rolling his eyes. "Alright." He seemed to give up, his eyes closing again, and before long his breathing evened out as he fell into a pained sleep.
Cas turned his attention back to the ceiling, letting his eyes fall shut too. He let the steady rhythm of the heart rate monitors comfort him until he too found rest.
Hours later, both men startled awake with the sound of a chair scraping to sit between the beds. Sam winced, looking up at them. "Sorry, I was going to try to be quiet."
Cas gave a small smile and pushed himself to reach the buttons on his bed. He adjusted it so he was mostly upright. Dean shifted his head to be able to see Sam, but he was unable to sit up as Cas had.
"You two look awful." Sam continued.
"Shuddup." Dean replied. He grimaced as he tried to take a deep breath.
"Didn't expect to see you conscious." Sam admitted. He tried to hide the concern and fear that he had felt the entire journey to the hospital from Kansas, but it was hard to completely mask.
"They wheeled me up this morning some time." Dean managed a wide grin. "Technically I had brain surgery."
"Good for you." Sam muttered, rolling his eyes.
"You're no fun."
"What is the damage?"
"Couple more surgeries. Six ribs to wire together, two rods in the leg, we'll see where it goes from there."
"Yikes."
"Cas has a concussion, couple of cracked ribs, and the ride from buffalo cost him an arm and a leg." Dean immediately laughed at his own joke.
Cas merely looked at him before looking down at his arm and leg in their respective casts.
"You two scared the crap out of me. I get a pic of Cas in a Duff's hat, and then all of the sudden I'm getting a phone call that my brother and his 'partner' have been in a rollover accident and have been airlifted to Rochester." Sam scrunched his brow together. "I thought…"
"I know." Dean said softly, sympathetic to where Sam's mind must've gone.
The younger Winchester gave a weak smile, looking at Castiel. "You know Cas, this is like the fourth time you've almost died in less than two weeks. Your luck sucks."
"On the contrary, I managed to avoid death four times, in no small part to Dean."
"Yeah, I helped so much while I was unconscious in the car." Dean replied sarcastically.
"The crash could have been worse. You are a skilled driver." Cas pressed on, in spite of Dean's face.
"Whatever."
"So you said there was some sort of spell." Sam interrupted, trying to get the conversation back on track. He could see from the slow way Dean was blinking that he was losing the opportunity to question them quickly. "Tell me more about it."
"It was like the fucking sun exploded in the car." Dean cut in. "It was bright, and loud."
"And?"
"And it was bright and loud. I couldn't see the road, I tried to stop, there was ice, we crashed. I don't know what you want from me Sam."
"Was there an obvious trigger, do you know where it originated from, did you notice anything weird?"
"Nothing seemed out of the ordinary before it happened. We had been driving for over an hour from Amherst, and there was no warning before it happened."
"It seemed to originate from inside the vehicle." Cas offered, eager to ease tension as he noticed the hostility grow in Dean's voice with his frustration. "Dean hesitated when we entered the vehicle at Duffs, but ultimately nothing was amiss."
"It was a feeling more than anything else." Dean admitted.
"A feeling of what?"
"I don't know. Like someone had been inside her. But the doors were locked, and nothing was moved or weird or anything. So I moved on." The hunter finished.
"That's not a lot to go on." Sam sighed.
"Well, next time I'll try to take notes while I'm being thrown off road by a spell." Dean muttered, closing his eyes and starting to drift off.
Sam rolled his eyes, but didn't comment to him further. He made eye contact with Cas, and gave him a small smile, trying to convey he was glad they were alright.
The three settled down for a bit of rest.
A/N: Sorry this one took a bit longer to post, haha. I spent a long time editing together supernatural videos instead of writing.
