It... looks like you have a pretty good idea about what Kohaku cut off that boar... XD I love this ship! That's great to hear! :) I would love it if Inagaki made my scenes canon! XD Thank you so much! Umm... I don't think I can answer your first question clearly without giving spoilers... but about your second question, let's just say that this fanfic will be a VERY slow burn O.o Kohaku's lessons certainly are interesting! XD Kohaku isn't quite my FAVORITE professor (^_^) but she's still an awesome teacher! :D She can be tricky when she wants to be! The path to knowledge can be a difficult one, as Gen now knows! O.o Thanks! :) Glad you liked it! :D Thank you! I like the kitten scene, too! :P Gen had a difficult time, that's for sure! O.o I hope all you enjoy this new chapter, and thank you again! ^_^
Chapter Twenty-Seven: (S01 E09k) Copper Discs
After the return of the two absent members of their group, Senku and the others, with the exception of the sleeping Kohaku, did light chores for the rest of the afternoon and during the evening, rinsing the many bowls they planned to use to rid them of the light layer of dust they had accumulated and cleaning the ramen cart. They also skinned the animals Kohaku and Gen had hunted and hung the skins to dry and eventually be made into leather.
Because Senku and the others now had the meat they needed, the following morning was filled with bubbling and boiling as the five of them cooked almost half of the meat both to soften it and to make delicious broth. When it was ready, Senku's Ramen Shop 2.0 was ready for business… and amongst the crowd of villagers their food had attracted was one particularly enthusiastic customer.
"Thanks for the ramen, Senku, Suika!" Ganen said cheerfully. "I'll work hard at the furnace today, I promise!"
Senku was perplexed by the sudden declaration, but Suika did a little happy dance.
"Yay! Thank you, Ganen!"
As Ganen went back to his ramen and Suika looked around to see if anybody needed anything, Senku shrugged.
I don't know what that was about, but eager workers are good workers.
After the villagers had eaten their fill and had some rest to let their stomachs settle, it was time for the first metal melting session Senku had planned for the week, which would provide him with molten iron he could pour into small wooden molds shaped like axe and hammer heads, picks, and the ends of tongs.
They weren't as impressive as the now-magnetic iron bars, but they were still important tools that Senku would need to properly handle the copper he would ask them to melt in that week's second melting session, which went off without a hitch, although their hardest workers, Ganen, Ruby, Shovel, and Gen were so tired by the end that they all collapsed by the bamboo pumps after they managed to heat the copper for the discs Senku intended to create.
When Senku had assured himself that they weren't suffering from anything more serious than extreme exhaustion, he had Chrome don the thick coat they had made to be protective gear against errant spatters and slowly pour the melted copper into a wooden mold.
The copper disc would then be flattened by Chrome and cut by Senku. While Kohaku and Suika worked on smoothing it down, the men would hold yet another ramen session to melt the leftover copper and create a second disc. A few days after that, they would see the fruit of their labors.
"The kingdom of science's-"
"Wait, Senku!"
When Senku paused and listened, Suika ran to the far end of the camp, picked up what looked like a square piece of leather, and placed it in front of their creation.
"It looks just like your flag!" she exclaimed merrily.
Senku stepped forward and looked more closely at the leather, which did have a vague, rocket-looking pattern on it.
"I guess it does," he said, giving a small smile.
He took a deep breath and started over.
"The kingdom of science's double hand-cranked generator is complete!"
The generator was an accomplishment, to be sure, but it came with its own set of problems.
"Turning both discs at the same time is going to be pretty hard for us," said Kohaku thoughtfully. "It was already wobbly when I was turning one by myself."
"Then we'll get two people to do it!" suggested an optimistic Suika.
Two people…? Senku mused.
From the tilt of Gen's head, it looked like had an idea – and a moment later, the same idea struck everybody else, and together, they walked to Kinro and Ginro, who were standing at the end of the bridge as always. After Chrome's attempt to appeal to their scientific curiosity failed, Gen, like the fraud magician that he was, quickly assessed the brothers' needs and wants and decided to go with bribery.
"Do you even know the recipe for electric plating," Senku grumbled to him in a whisper, "never mind the very long, very complicated way to do it?"
"No idea!"
He sounds way too happy for somebody who's promising something he won't be delivering himself…
Standing next to Senku, somebody else was observing the situation closely.
"Asagiri Gen…" he heard Kohaku murmur suspiciously, "…your words are seriously… as light as a feather…"
Light as a feather they were, but nevertheless effective, and the brothers' assent was immediately obvious. Ginro's eyes were sparkling as he squealed in excitement, and while Kinro tried to pretend that getting a new golden spear didn't really matter to him, the very slight blush on his face showed how embarrassed he was about wanting something nice for himself.
"So, guys, what do we have to do?" asked Ginro. He struck a pose with his chest out and his spear pointing forward, and it was clear to Senku that he could already see the tip of his spear glinting with the shiny metal that was his namesake.
In response, they led the brothers to the camp. While Kinro and Ginro had seen pieces of the generator before – such as the large copper sheets and the planks of wood that Chrome and Kohaku had cut and tied together to create a platform – they had never seen the finished product because Senku and the others had just finished making it half an hour ago, and Ginro let out a gasp as he laid eyes on the copper discs for the first time.
"Wow… you guys made this from the metal in Chrome's shed? Those circles are taller than I am!"
"Kohaku," Senku said, turning to her, "can you show them how to turn the discs? Chrome and I are going to check on the wires."
"Sure, no problem," replied Kohaku.
(End of Chapter Twenty-Seven.) (21/11/20.)
I. My personal comments: In the manga, Suika is standing next to the generator with her hand held out towards it as Senku announces that the generator is complete, so this is me explaining that as well as the square science flag in front of the generator. I don't think any of the teenagers would have thought of putting the square science flag there, so I think it was Suika's idea :P And I mentioned that they had more than one ramen session during this time because... well, the iron parts of their tools had to come from somewhere! :D
II. Question of the day: How do you feel about all the things they had to do and make to complete the generator? :)
III. A tiny request: Thank you for reading my fanfic! :D If you've read this far, I hope you'll consider taking an extra minute to leave a review for Chapter Twenty-Seven ("Copper Discs")? :D Reviews really mean a lot to me as a fanfiction writer, and all kinds of positive, negative, and/or constructive reviews are very welcome! ^_^ Even if it's the year 5738 or something, I would love to hear your thoughts on this chapter! :D (By the way, I'm "fireflyhwufanficwrit" on Reddit and "firefly-hwufanficwriterrrrr" on Tumblr :D)
