Chapter 12: Percy vs. Quantum Mechanics
I groaned, hearing shuffles and loud voices. It's far too early to be awake. I rolled over, and put my head under my pillow, drowning out some of the sound. It was quiet for about two seconds before I was being shaken.
"What do you want," I whined, my voice muffled by the pillow.
"Neeks, wake up, it's almost time for breakfast." Said Will, still shaking me.
"I don't want breakfast. I want to sleep. "
"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Plus, we have class today. You don't want to be late on the first day."
"But sleep-"
"Nico, get up, or I will make you get up."
"No."
I turned around to peek at Will from under my pillow. I felt a tug on my arm, and I went limp, making it harder for Will to drag me out of bed. The pillow fell off of my face, and I saw Will's shadow on the wood floor, giving me an idea. I let Will drag me until I started to fall. He tried to catch me, but I was too fast. I aimed for his shadow, and the moment I hit the shadow, I shadow traveled back on to my bed.
"Really? Nico, you know you're not supposed-" started Will with a stern look, but he paused when he was interrupted by Ron.
"How'd you do that? You can't apparate, you're not of age yet! Who even taught you? And how'd you not splinch?"
What was this kid talking about? Clearly I'd done something I'm not supposed to, or from the sounds of it, should not be capable of. After a minute, I remembered that we got to Diagon Alley by apparating. Ron thought I was teleporting. Technically, I was, but I'm not sure I'm supposed to be able to. I needed to come up with a response quick, before Ron made a bigger scene than he already had. I opened my mouth to answer, but Harry got there before me.
"Wait, that's not normal?" Dam it, I was calling attention.
"What's not normal?" Said a boy, Seamus, I think.
"Nico apparated!" Wonderful.
"You apparated? How?" Asked Seamus. Again I opened my mouth to respond, and again I was interrupted.
"Did someone say Nico apparated?" Asked Neville. Dean Thomas turned his head, now interested. Percy, Jason, Leo, Frank, and Annabeth, looked at me curiously. Will caught their eyes and mouthed "shadow travel" and they nodded in understanding.
"Well," Ron asked, "Are you going to tell us?"
"I didn't apparate. I jumped when I hit the ground, and Will was standing in front of me, probably blocking your view."
"But Will wasn't blocking my view. I saw you apparate from the floor to you bed. You didn't even have your wand out! Only very skilled wizards can do wandless magic! How did you do it?"
"I told you, I jumped from the floor to my bed. Maybe you just saw something wrong?" I felt bad for playing that card, but it was necessary.
"I - I don't know. Maybe." He replied uneasily. I could tell he was not going to give that one up. I will need to keep an eye on him.
The dorm room slowly went back to normal, and the talking picked back up again. I exchanged a look with the male demigods, plus Annabeth, and we silently agreed to talk about it with the rest of the group.
"Hang on," I groaned. Ron was going to kill me with all those questions.
"What's she doing here," he asked, pointing at Annabeth. The common room again went silent, as the guys who were not accustomed to sleeping arrangements with demigods jumped out of the direct line of view, as to not be seen by Annabeth. Annabeth cleared her throat.
"Sorry guys, we didn't mean to make any of you uncomfortable. Both Percy and I get really bad nightmares, so we usually bunk together. Due to the fact that Percy cannot get up into the girl's dormitories, and sleeping in the common room is out of question, the only reasonable solution was that I come over here."
Ron furrowed his eyebrows. "Why don't you just try sleeping separately?"
Annabeth sighed, and sent an annoyed look at Ron. "Do you value your sleep Ron?" At his nod, Annabeth continued. "Well, then I suggest you do not try to separate Percy and I, unless you want to wake to screams multiple times a night. I would also suggest that should any of the other female American exchange students come up here for the night, that you extend the same courtesy to them as well. It will most definitely happen, as it is rare for any of us to sleep through the night. If it makes you all feel any more comfortable, the other girls and I will leave before the rest of you are awake."
The non-demigods looked at each other, and then back to Annabeth and Percy. Harry spoke up. "I don't think any of us mind all that much."
Annabeth sighed in relief. "Thank you."
"Out of curiosity, what have all you Americans seen that's so bad that none of you can make it through the night?" Nice, Ron. Real subtle. Not nosy at all. All the demigods in the dormitory stared at Ron with hollow eyes, our faces speaking of the pain and horror we have to endure on a daily basis. Finally, Annabeth broke the silence. "Trust me, Ron, when I say it's not something you want to hear about."
"Welcome to Transfigurations," said Professor McGonagall. She said other things afterward, but I started to zone out. I was thinking about what happened this morning. I had come far too close to blowing our cover.
I snapped out of my daze when McGonagall told us to start our assignment. We had to transfigure feathers to watches. I started to get to work, trying my best to do what she told us. My concentration was interrupted when Harry and Ron walked in late. I tried to keep my head down and not call attention to myself, but I had to stifle a laugh when I head McGonagall say something about transfiguring one of them into a map.
I felt a tap on my shoulder, and turned around to face Percy.
"Neeks, I've been replaced." He pointed over to Annabeth and Hermione, who had both already completed their assignments, and were talking about beginning spells and quantum mechanics.
"Good luck Percy. Distracting your girlfriend from a carbon copy of herself might be harder than holding up the world."
"Thanks for the encouragement."
Percy turned to Annabeth and Hermione, and tried to insert himself in to the conversation.
"Hi, I'm Percy Jackson." Annabeth and Hermione both paused, and Annabeth looked at Percy before putting her head in her hand and mumbling "Seaweed Brain." Hermione turned to look at Percy.
"Yeah, we met on the train. I'm Hermione Granger."
I had trouble holding back my laughter. Percy came back over to face me. He gave me a glare as he saw my face.
"Shut up, Nico." At that point I burst out laughing.
"I'm never letting you live that one down."
