A/N: Another short one. I'm figuring I'll get them through freshman year and then it'll be a bit longer but less specific chapters until they graduate. Just sort of editing what happened in the show to be like...better.I'm not RIB so I mean, I don't own glee. Enjoy!
Chapter 11: Happy Halloween
Santana and Brittany could not be more thrilled for their first time going to the Halloween Dance at McKinley. Rather than have a homecoming dance, the school put on a Halloween bash, a Winter Formal, and Junior & Senior Prom in the Spring. The best part of the Halloween Bash was that rather than having to dress up in snazzy gowns and tuxes everyone went in costume. There was tons of candy and Halloween themed food served. The best part, however, was that the Glee Club was performing.
"Happy Hallow Week Glee!" Mr. Schue had on a Halloween tie (covered in jack-o-lanterns) and looked way too excited. The only person more excited was Brittany.
"Halloween is so fun! I can't wait to show off our costume San." she smiled brightly. Santana had to admit, of course only internally, that she was excited too.
"We need to put together a set list of the best Halloween songs to perform at the bash. Don't worry, there will be plenty of time when we aren't performing with the latest billboard hits, but it's our job to be festive." Jesse said.
"This week we will be preparing to perform at the bash. Your assignment is to help create a set list." said. The glee club was quick to pick out some of the better known songs: Thriller, Heads Will Roll and Monster Mash. Brittany suggested Time Warp from Rocky Horror, saying how cool it would be to get the whole gym dancing along to it. This is Halloween from The Nightmare Before Christmas was suggested by Tina since it was an easy group number. Her secret reasoning was her couples costume with Mike. A few other classics were picked from movies and before long they had a great set list picked out.
On Tuesday, with a finalized ten song set list auditions were held for songs with solos. The set list was:
Thriller
Heads Will Roll
This is Halloween
Monster Mash
Time Warp
Fright of Their Lives (Beetle Juice)
I Put A Spell On You
Ghostbusters Theme
Monster (Lady Gaga)
Disturbia (Rihanna)
This is Halloween, Monster Mash and Time Warp had no solos, all though Brittany and Mike were tasked with teaching the Glee Club how to do the Time Warp. Thriller was easily scooped up by Jesse, and Santana took on Heads Will Roll. Disturbia went to Mercedes and Rachel took on I Put A Spell on You. In a surprising turn of events, Kurt secured Monster by Lady Gaga. Finn got his first solo with Fright of their lives. Artie, Jake, Matt and Ryder were the quartet for the Ghostbusters theme.
Preparing for the dance was exhausting. Santana was jumping between dancing the Time Warp, practicing her solo for Jesse and when she got home putting finishing touches on her and Brittany's costumes. On top of that was her school work. She knew it was worth it, but had to make sure she always had a snack nearby. No matter what, she took a snack break if they were at school when 4 o'clock hit. She wasn't going to let some extra work slip her up. Her costume already had her feeling insecure so it wouldn't take much.
The day of the dance arrived, Saturday, which happened to actually be Halloween that year. Her and Brittany, donning Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn outfits respectively, arrived to see what Brittany dubbed "Halloween Heaven". Spooky "witch's brew" fruit punch was served by Sue Sylvester who gave them an approving nod about their costumes. Brittany then found the plastic Jack O Lantern's filled with assorted candy. Santana smiled, eating a witch's finger to appease Brittany who pouted at the girl's refusal of candy.
After Brittany had her fill of candy on her mouth and in her pockets, they headed to the dance floor as Jesse took the stage with an amazing rendition of Thriller, dressed as thanks to a dare. He was backed up by Jake and Mike dancing. When he finished, Santana knew there was only a one song break between that and Heads Will Roll. She took that time to have another cup of punch knowing she'd be on stage for a while. Brittany smiled as her girl took the stage, finding Mike and Tina among the crowd, dressed as Jack and Sally from The Nightmare before Christmas. Santana's voice was perfect for the song and had the whole crowd applauding as the club gathered offstage before the group numbers would begin. Santana was handed a mini bottle of water, which she gratefully drank. They put Mike and Tina front and center because of their costumes. They weren't the only ones dressed well for their songs. After getting his song, Finn had dressed as BeetleJuice. Rachel had over exaggerated her nose, if that was possible, with her witch look. Kurt had a very Gaga-esque outfit. The Ghostbusters boys had decided to dress as the Ghostbusters. Quinn and Kitty were designated to dress as zombie cheerleaders by Sue, much to their dismay. Marley was dressed as Supergirl and looked like she was born to wear the costume. Karofsky and Puckerman matched Kitty and Quinn's cheerleader outfits. Finn was annoyed by the attention Puck was giving his girlfriend but let it slide since Puck gave equal attention to Kitty while Karofsky stood near them disinterestedly. Last was Mercedes, who was dressed very similarly to Rihanna in the Disturbia video.
They all got on stage, performing their own rendition of "This is Halloween". At the end of the song they all bowed to Mike the Pumpkin King. That led them straight into Monster Mash, Mike taking the first line as the rest of the boys rose up to join him then the girls raised up to do the other half of the echo. They all fell, playing dead before Time Warp again, sitting up quickly as the song began. The audience quickly caught on and did the dance with them. After that, there was a fairly large intermission of songs. Brittany and Santana weren't involved in any performances, so they danced and socialized. There were some carnival games at the back of the gym that they played before Santana agreed to split a caramel apple with Brittany. Although Santana was exhausted, they stayed to support their fellow Glee clubbers. Quinn joined them at their table, finally pawing Puck off on Kitty and Karofsky having wandered off aimlessly.
"When do you think some of us forgotten members will get highlighted?" she asked. Santana sat up and scratched her head. There were quite a few members who hadn't gotten a spotlight. Quinn notably.
"I'm not sure. I would talk to Jesse, see what he thinks." Santana mentioned.
"Yeah. You have a pretty voice Q. Maybe he'll pair you and Quinn up for a duet at Regionals in January." Brittany said.
"Why are they so far away?" Santana asked.
"Jesse said it's because they try to do all the regionals at the same time and in bigger areas they have to do a competition between sectionals and regionals. Like in California." Brittany said.
"Right. Well Quinn, there's also the Glee Christmas recital coming up. Just try to do more week to week." Santana said.
"Thanks. Kitty and I were talking about it, and we kind of thought it might because we are such stars on the Cheerios." Quinn mused.
"It is a bit. But it's because that splits your energy." Jesse said approaching "Last year, before Kitty was Varsity captain, she did a lot more in Glee because she had time. Sue will pull you if we take too much of your time. The same goes for Finn, Karofsky, Matt, Puck and Mike. They are star athletes. We don't want to risk you getting pulled from Glee."
"I think you should at least let us try." Quinn argued.
"You're right, and I will after seeing how well everyone handled this week." Jesse grinned, before stalking off to take a picture next to .
"Well, there you go Q. Better be ready, because next week's lessons is guaranteed to be all about sharing the spotlight.
