A MESSED UP DESTINY
A STAR WARS STORY
Chapter 11
Disclaimer: Disney owns everything and I make no profit from this.
Hello there everyone and welcome to chapter 11 of A Messed up Destiny! This is the last chapter that will revolve around the Battle of Geonosis and it focuses around the duel with Dooku, as well as the aftermath, so I might be able to fit the discussion between Vader and Obi Wan here, but I make no promises. Anyways, the chapter begins in the Geonosian Arena -just moments after where chapter 10 left off- and kicks things off with Anakin and Jango kicking butt together. There's also a scene where the Jedi mistrust their new ally, but he's under Lord Vader's protection, so I wouldn't worry about him too much. Also, Padme gets to meet Jango officially and Obi Wan helps his 'Padawan' rescue Siri and Ferus. Lastly, the duo faces off against Dooku and Qui Gon intervenes, but I shall say no more. Now, without further ado…let's dive straight into it!
Note: Please forgive the puns in this chapter and see if can find the refference to Battlefront II.
Note 2: After some editing, I've split the paragraphs up to make the chapter easier to read. Hope it's better now.
Geonosis, Execution Arena, Anakin's point of view:
The Battle of Geonosis was as much of a mess as I remembered and we were losing, badly. More than half of the Jedi Master Windu had brought with him had been reduced to corpses and the others –including Obi Wan and Padme- would meet the same fate if I didn't do something about it soon. Jango and I had charged into the battlefield a few minutes ago, but we were already turning the tide in the Republic's favor. Having already assisted in the saving of two Jedi Padawans, Jango quickly took to the skies, using his pistols to blast and his flamethrower to melt any and all droids he encountered while he dodged incoming fire with some clever uses of his jetpack. The Mandalorian really was something else, and I could see why Dooku picked him as a template for the Clone Army. He and his clones would make for excellent soldiers, not that I didn't know that already.
After chopping another droid's head off and crushing another with the Force, I tried to get closer to Padme in order to protect her from any incoming fire, but she deterred me with a glare that said 'I'm holding up okay, go get Dooku.' I swore to myself that I could hear her actual voice in my head in that moment, but I shrugged it off and continued to wreck our metallic opponents, heading for the now destroyed podium that Dooku and the Separatists were hiding behind. Both Jango and Obi Wan saw what I was doing and headed towards me, wanting to help. I did nothing to deter them from doing so, since any help when fighting Dooku wasn't something I'd complain about in the near future.
A few dodges and Force-assisted leaps later, I was standing near the entrance of the tunnel that once led to the podium with Obi Wan and Jango on either side of me, but Dooku was nowhere in sight. Instead, the three of us could see one of Viceroy Gunray's aids that had been left behind, flanked on both sides by B2 battle droids. Jango's helmet tilted to the left, an indication that he'd deal with that side while Obi Wan and I fought the other droids. He and I quickly charged the metallic soldiers, which were no match for a Jedi, much less a Sith Lord of my caliber. Obi Wan ran his blade through one droid while I easily dispatched the others with two small bursts of Force Lightning that surprised my 'Master', but he only expressed his emotions through the Force, remaining stoic in front of the aid. We turned around to see Jango fist fighting one battle droid while another was laying on the ground –it's processor melted from flames- and the third receiving kick after kick to the face by Jango's boot. Not wanting to waste time, I slammed the Neimoidian's face into the nearest wall before raising my blade to his neck.
"Where did the Viceroy go?", I snarled, scarring the life out of him. "Tell me!"
"I- I do not know!", he responded weakly, ready to collapse from fear.
"I recommend that you answer me, Neimoidian. It would be most unfortunate if something bad were to happen to you…", I threatened in a low voice, hoping that Obi Wan couldn't hear.
"The- the Viceroy retreated to a base away from here. I don't know where! Please!", he begged, trying to save his skin.
Ramming my blade through his neck, I allowed his body to fall, and the man's head was split in two by the ignited lightsaber in my hand. "Worthless.", I said to myself before turning back towards Obi Wan and Jango, who were in the process of untying Siri and Ferus.
The latter shook when he saw the Mandalorian, and I could sense the hate he felt towards the Bounty Hunter. It really is a miracle that this kid didn't fall while the War was still ongoing... Siri on the other hand, had a look of disbelief and fear on her face, and I could sense that she was afraid of…me. Why would she be afraid of me? I wasn't going to hurt her! Surely she knew that!
"Anakin, what have I said about killing people?", asked Obi Wan, berating me once more.
"Don't do it unless there is no other way to solve a conflict.", I told him, repeating the line that the old man had tried to drill into my head since my teenage years.
"And what did you do just now?", Obi Wan continued.
"…I killed the aid.", I said, trying to sound ashamed of my actions, even if there was nothing wrong with killing the fool when we were at War with the CIS.
"Leave the boy be, Jedi. He tried to collect information and was angered by the news he received. It's no crime to kill an enemy when in War.", Jango cut in, defending me.
Siri hadn't said a single word yet, instead trying to probe me through the Force. I –of course- wasn't going to let her, and reinforced my mental shields, wanting to be sure that she wouldn't see anything she wasn't supposed to, which was…well, everything.
"Skywalker…", she began. "Where did you learn how to do that?", she asked me, words coming out in a more high-pitched tone than usual.
"What do you mean?", I asked, wanting her to clarify before I responded so I could ensure that I wouldn't say more than I wanted to.
"The lightning.", she told me, stuttering. "Whe-where did you le-learn it?", Siri asked once more.
I was stunned by the question -pun intended- and was trying to come up with a response that wouldn't give away the years of Sith training I had, but I had nothing. Thankfully, Obi Wan interrupted, saving me from a very awkward response.
"I think we should get moving.", my 'Master' proposed. "There are far too many droids outside and Master Windu needs all the help he can get.", he added, trying to get the point across.
Ferus perked up when he heard the word 'droids', overeager to destroy some clankers and get –a little bit- of payback for being locked up by them. "Hand me a lightsaber and I'll kill them all.", he agreed.
"Get in line, I saw them first.", I teased him, trying to break the awkward silence that came after his…inappropriate comment.
I ran out immediately after, leading the group out of the tunnel and into the arena, stopping only to help Siri get down –she had been injured by something but wouldn't say what-. Jango launched himself into the skies once more, blasting away at any and all droids he could see while I used the Force –mainly the Dark Side- to manipulate blaster bolts so they'd go around any Jedi that was in danger, something the Padawans were especially grateful for, not that I actually cared about that. The only thing making their lives worth saving is that Padme would continue to see that Darth Vader can be killed, by none other than myself. She'd continue to believe in me, and that was all that mattered.
I was pulled out of my thoughts when the Master Yoda arrived with the Clones a couple minutes later, when I heard Obi Wan call to me to board the nearest gunship. I scanned the environment and saw that Padme was close, so I helped provide cover for her while she got on the transport before boarding it myself. Jango noticed this and followed us, landing on top of the gunship with his jetpack. The Clone pilot commandeering the ship was told to get us out of there, and I only caught a glimpse of Master Windu boarding Yoda's ship before the transport rose to the skies.
Our gunship was soon surrounded by hundreds of others, deploying both Clones and AT-TE walkers alike. Jango had blasted off into the skies yet again, jumping from gunship to gunship and raining missiles on the droid armies below. The battle seemed to be going in our favor, but only thanks to the call I had made earlier about not charging across empty fields without cover, which should have been a no-brainer to begin with. We soon encountered the same Trade Federation starship as last time –the one whose destruction had filled the air with dust- and I found myself in a position to do something about the droids that were mercilessly annihilating the Clone Troopers below. Seeing as the only important people aboard were Obi Wan, myself and Padme, I didn't care too much about using the Dark Side in front of them, so –with a little guidance from Qui Gon to avoid hitting our men- I began showering the droids with torrents of Force Lightning that destroyed their IG-227 tanks, the wheeled tanks that had been the cause of far too many Republic casualties the last time I had gone through this battle, mainly because of their anti-artillery missiles, which were capable of wiping out an AT-TE walker in one shot.
Padme was shocked by the amount of power I had showcased (puns not intended), but Obi Wan's face was filled with disappointment and I could sense him worrying about Padme's safety, as well as his own. That was something I'd have to deal with later however, because the Clone beside me –having recovered from his initial shock- reported that Count Dooku had been spotted ahead of us, forcing me to stop the barrage of Lighting and instead focus on 'capturing' the Sith Lord. I immediately ordered the pilot to fire at Dooku, only to learn that we were out of missiles yet again, having used our last ones to destroy the Federation starship mere minutes ago.
"Anakin…what was that?", Obi Wan asked suddenly, preventing me from responding to the pilot, something that Padme immediately took care of, ordering him to follow the former Jedi while I spoke with Obi Wan.
"That was me trying to help you. Now, we should focus on Dooku.", I said, trying to change the subject and prevent my 'Master' from asking further questions.
Obi Wan seemed like he wanted to argue, but he held back from responding and merely nodded an affirmative, probably understanding we had bigger problems to deal with. At least he knows how to keep his tongue in check. "I suppose we do, my Lord." Or not…
"Boys, can we focus on getting rid of the Sith Lord please?", Padme chimed in, cutting off whatever Obi Wan's following quip was going to be.
"Senator, I believe we have a much bigger problem at hand…", the Jedi began, but he was quickly cut off by Padme, who rushed to defend me.
"He's on the same side as you, 'Master' Jedi.", Padme told him, a subtle tone of anger betraying her true feelings of dislike towards the man.
"Obi Wan-", I began before giving him a second to turn around and face me. "-capturing Count Dooku is the current objective. Don't let your emotions interfere with the task at hand. Isn't that what you once told me?", I asked him, wanting to rub his mistake it.
"…Yes, I suppose you are right, 'Padawan'. We shall discuss this at a later date.", said Obi Wan after a moment of silence. Knowing that to be the end of our conversation, I turned my attention to a nearby Geonosian Starfighter that was getting dangerously close to our gunship –and therefore compromising Padme's safety- and crushed it with the Force, which earned me a sigh of disapproval from Obi Wan.
Our transport soon landed at the same pad it had last time, in the same hangar as Dooku's ship. It stopped momentarily, allowing for Obi Wan, Padme and myself to get off before the pilot took to the skies to rejoin the battle. Dooku's still form was awaiting us across the hangar and I was about to tell Padme that she should hide, but I was interrupted by the sudden arrival of Jango, who performed a perfect landing near us before turning to me, seemingly in a hurry.
"Skywalker, I've intercepted a transmission about some Separatist Command Center being in the same building as we are. I'm going to investigate.", Jango told us, taking the lead.
"I'll come with you. This wouldn't be my first time hacking a console.", Padme said before shooting me a glance, as if looking for approval of the idea. "Besides, I'd rather shoot droids than face a Sith Lord.", she added, trying to emphasize her point.
Not wanting her anywhere near Dooku, I hastily agreed to the plan and after making Jango promise to keep her safe, the two non-Jedi departed, leaving Obi Wan and I to face Tyranus alone. We both walked forwards, side by side -choosing to forget that one was a Sith himself-, focusing fully on the upcoming duel. Obi Wan did his best to steady his breathing while I tried to keep myself from using the Dark Side, not wanting Dooku to sense it this early on so I could surprise him later. Taking the lead, I began speaking, hoping to give Obi Wan a few more seconds to collect himself before the fight.
"You will pay for all the Jedi you've killed today Dooku.", I told the old Sith, repeating the line I had uttered years ago.
"Anakin, you'll go slowly on the left and I'll…", Obi Wan tried to say, but I interrupted him.
"No, I'm taking him now!", I yelled, announcing my next move in order to keep Dooku's attention on me.
I ignited my azure blade and leaped in the air, leaving myself virtually unguarded against an attack, hoping that Dooku would act like he had the first time I'd done this. The Count took the bait and shot Force Lighting from his fingers, but he wasn't expecting me to twist my blade in midair, so I managed to block the attack at the last second. Obi Wan tried to run up to me, but intercepted by another blast of Force Lighting which he failed to block quite miserably. With Obi Wan temporarily out of commission, it now fell to me to defeat Tyranus in combat and secure the plans to the Death Star that he had taken from Geonosian architects -though I wasn't supposed to know the latter-, all while not being used to fighting with regular limbs. Oh, this wasn't going to be fun at all…
Seeing that the 'Master' had been incapacitated, Dooku took the initiative to attack me -the 'young Padawan'-, believing that I would go down without much effort. Oh how wrong he was... Using the Force to enhance my senses, I parried each and every strike, occasionally locking blades with the ex-Jedi as to not allow him to move his saber in a fluid motion, the very thing Form II was based on, therefore not allowing him to fight properly. Dooku was frustrated by this, but I knew that he wouldn't allow himself to use too much of his anger, or else risk making a mistake, something that would mean the end of the Sith Grand Plan in the old man's eyes.
I, on the other hand, was doing quite well, putting most of my efforts in defending until Master Yoda could get here, since I knew that Dooku would flee once that happened and was under 'orders' from Qui Gon to protect Obi Wan. The Count was getting increasingly frustrated and –after noticing that Obi Wan was regaining consciousness- sent another blast of Force Lighting his way. I did my best to ignore Obi Wan's cry of pain, but it was enough of a distraction for Dooku to find an opening and send me flying into the nearest wall with a quick Force Push. Ignoring the pain in my lower back, I leaped towards him yet again, only for him to successfully blast me with Force Lighting this time, and sending me right into the corner of the hangar. Having endured far worse because of Sidious –even to the point of Force Draining me to better his own health when he was in danger-, I managed to ignore the pain and get up once more, surprising the Count. He took a few steps back to put a distance between the two of us before speaking, hoping to make me use the Dark Side in order to win, not knowing that he would surely die if he succeeded.
"I must say, Padawan, that I am impressed. I was expecting far less from you, and far more from your Master, who you seem to have already surpassed.", said Dooku, complimenting me. In another life I would have wondered why he said such a thing, but after living through Palpatine's manipulations it was clear that he was just trying to make me think I was better than anyone else, something his Master could later work on exploiting. Clever, but not something I'll be falling for anytime soon.
"I'm sure I that you did Count, but know that my own powers far exceed yours. You will soon pay for your crimes.", I told the ex-Jedi, pretending to fall into his verbal trap.
"If there is one thing I've learned under Yoda-", Dooku began, hoping to distract me by forcing me to pay attention to his words instead of his blade. "-is that overconfidence-" The Count began advancing forwards twirling his blade as to keep my guessing his next move. "-is a weakness!", he finished before lunging forwards, trying to stab my chest. I deflected the attack and proceeded to faint one of my own, but Dooku saw the trap and made no effort to block it instead preferring to throw a nearby pipe in my direction, which was dodged rather ungracefully. The Count laughed at my struggle, which urged me to call Obi Wan's lightsaber to me and switch my current Form to Jar'Kai -one of its variants-, which I had learned to utilize with deadly precision during my years as Darth Vader. Huh, guess this is the part where I put all that Sith training to good use.
If Dooku was startled by my Mastery of the style, he didn't show it, instead opting to lead me away from Obi Wan as a means to put distance between me and my 'ally'. After a few minutes of dueling –including plenty of blocking, parrying and dodging the Sith Lord's lightsaber- and an impressive jump performed by Dooku -who at one point opted to jump above my saber instead of blocking it- we eventually found ourselves dueling near the same power cable we had many years ago –at least for me, that is-, so I acted in the same way my younger self would have and cut in in two, effectively shutting the lights off and giving myself another advantage in the form of a helpful Force Ghost who was telling me where Dooku's lightsaber would be coming from next, which was rather helpful considering that I was using two blades and that neither felt quite right for combat, something I'd have to fix with a quick visit to Ilum when the battle was over.
Tyranus was getting more and more aggressive as the fight went on, but I stopped myself from performing any counter attacks that would either main or kill the man because I didn't want to go against Qui Gon's wishes. Or, at least I tried to. I am unsure of when exactly it happened, but at some point Dooku found an opening and was able to slice my Padawan blade in half, leaving me with only Obi Wan's, which was built far differently than mine. I tried to switch to Form III and tried to copy some of the movements I remembered Obi Wan performing during the War, but I was too late. Dooku had already moved his saber halfway through my arm by the time I had realized what was happening and had finished the job before my scream of pain escaped my lips. He then blasted me with a torrent of Force Lightning and flung me to a nearby wall using the Force. Qui Gon's presence wrapped itself around my mind, shielding my thoughts from the Count and tried to ease my pain, but I was already seeing nothing but red.
I was back in the suit, one arm missing and by breathing systems failing, and Dooku was nothing more than a foolish enemy daring to oppose me. Allowing myself to dive deep within the Dark Side, I bended the Force to my will and made it bring a previously discarded lightsaber to my hand, one that belonged to a Jedi. The enemy was surprised to see me standing up once more, and I was vaguely aware of a voice in the back of my head telling me to stop what I was doing, but it was of no concern. With a lit saber in my left hand I began moving forwards, easily deflecting the blasts of Force Lighting sent my way and overwhelming the opponent with the power of the Dark Side.
I sent every object in the hangar towards the enemy and the environment changed, leaving me standing in the middle of the Interrogation Chamber on Fortress Inquisitorius with a Jedi Padawan miraculously dodging the projectiles, before it changed back to the hangar in an instant. Knowing that getting distracted could mean defeat -and therefore death either by Jedi/Rebels or a displeased Palpatine-, I kept my focus on the enemy and used the Force to apply untold amounts of pressure on him, which he somehow managed to overcome, sending more lightning my way in a final attempt to save his life, but I was having none of it. I continued moving forwards –not bothering to block it since my suit could still take it- and tanked any and all attacks sent my way, not caring if they were bursts of lighting or small projectiles or just a plain Force Push.
After a few more steps, I was towering above the target, who had exhausted their energy and were leaning against the wall, probably praying for someone to save them. It would not happen. Help would never come, and their death would serve as another example of the Empire's strength. I raised my blade high, preparing to strike at the target, but my blade was stopped midway by a Force barrier. I was in the Fortress again –this time a hallway- trying to kill Cere Junda and Cal Kestis. The image was gone as quickly as it came. I positioned my crimson blade with the tip nearly touching the barrier before pushing again, putting all the Dark Side's power behind the attack. I expected the barrier to fall, but not only did it hold, the enemy managed to push me to back as well, sending me flying to the other side of the area. I then became vaguely aware of a middle aged man telling the enemy to go, to run, and I knew my target had received help. The two would pay for their crimes against the Empire, for defying my Master. The target then, in an attempt to flee destroyed a fiery pillar behind me, but it was going nowhere near me. Instead, it was about to fall onto…Padme!
She was there, lying on the ground, unmoving. I had to save her! Knowing that I wouldn't get there in time, I used all of my strength to bend the power of the Force to my will and shattered in the pillar in thousand pieces, all of which fell on the ground around her, leaving Padme unscathed. I wanted to walk towards her, to see if she was well, but I then noticed my respirator failing. My chest was hurting, as if it was on fire, and I fell to the ground, defeated and sure to be punished for my failure. The last thing I saw before everything faded away was Padme leaning over me, accompanied by several Clones, Rex amongst them.
And…scene! There you have it guys! Chapter 11 is complete at last! I sincerely hope you enjoyed it since it took a long time to write compared to its relatively short length. I hope the last scene in the duel with Dooku didn't confuse many of you, but if it did fear not, because I shall explain below. So hold back the reviews that are telling me how confused you are and stand by for the upcoming exposition!
Note: For those who are only interested in the list of events regarding the hallucination scene explained go near the bottom of the page. It should be right above the final message.
Firstly, we'll begin with the changes in the Battle of Geonosis. The most important change is the number of Jedi survivors. In canon about 170 out of 200 Jedi were killed in the battle and over 80% of those 170 died in the opening moments of the battle, but in this version only about 100 Jedi have died until the Clones arrive, which equals an approximate 70 Jedi lives saved by Darth Vader. Huh, never thought I'd see the day.
Anyways, I feel like I need to turn your attention to Anakin's thoughts, specifically the following lines "The only thing making their lives worth saving is that Padme would continue to see that Darth Vader can be killed, by none other than myself. She'd continue to believe in me, and that was all that mattered." He explicitly states that he's only saving these Jedi Padawans because he wants to prove Padme right. She had previously said that he's capable of overcoming Darth Vader and Anakin just wants to prove that he can do it whenever, which –ironically enough- eliminates the point of the action since he's doing it while expecting a reward of some sort –in this case it's Padme's approval-.
Another thing is the moment where Anakin can understand what Padme wants him to do without her telling him to, almost as if she's using telepathy. This is a short moment, but I'd like to mention and that it will be expanded later and that no, Padme isn't Force sensitive in this story. The AU aspect of this story involves the time travel, not different origin stories for the characters. Also –logically speaking- Padme would have been tested for a Midichlorian Count when she was little and –unlike Palpatine's family in canon- her parents would have no reason to hide her from the Jedi.
Secondly, I'd like to talk about the moment where Vader interrogates –and kills- Nute Gunray's aid, someone who should be considered an innocent. It's a pretty big moment, so it deserves a paragraph on its own. Vader's manhandling of the innocent is very much something he'd do, but obviously goes against a Jedi's moral code, not that he really cares. It is worth to point out that canon Anakin has acted like this on multiple occasions on the Clone Wars TV show, specifically when the Imperial March plays in the background, though I'm sure that's just a coincidence. Jokes aside, Vader would have no problem doing this to gain information and would certainly kill the man later, maybe even out of habit at this point. Jango, a Bounty Hunter who understands the need of doing this in a time of war understands and supports the action, but the Jedi don't. Also, Siri is terrified by something Anakin does during that scene, but it isn't his behavior that shocks her the most (pun most definitely intended) See, I just dropped a hint for you guys. This will of course be addressed later, probably in an Obi Wan-centric chapter after the whole mess between him and Vader has been cleared up.
Thirdly, Anakin's intervention during the scene where the heroes are on the gunship. While Jango was busy being the badass that he is, Anakin was trying to give an edge to the Clones, and smartly does so only after the Federation Starship falls to the ground, which means that the dust will cloud everyone's vision and all the Clones or Jedi on the ground would see is a massive array of explosions on the battlefield. Also, the Separatist tank mentioned is the thing with wheels and the bunch of missiles that wrecks a bunch of AT-TEs in the movie. In case you don't know the one just search for "Star Wars Separatist IG 227 tank", go to "images" and you'll find it.
Fourthly, the duel with Dooku. This was meant to be a showcase of Anakin's power. In canon, Anakin was never interested in learning more about the Force or enhancing his powers, instead relying on his natural strengths to win a battle or duel. Darth Vader on the other hand, was forced to re-learn everything Force and Lightsaber related, from combat forms to ways he could use to crush an army in battle (sometimes literally). So while Anakin from canon lacked the knowledge and Vader from canon lacked the power because of his injuries on Mustafar, the Anakin/Vader in this story has both and is more powerful that either Yoda or Sidious, as the latter predicted in Revenge of the Sith.
The whole point of the duel is that Anakin can win against Dooku despite numerous disadvantages (having to face him one-on-one, Dooku's lightsaber having been built for combat against lightsaber-wielding opponents, Dooku's form focusing on the same thing, the fact that he has to hide his true power from Dooku so that he won't tell Sidious and the fact that he is holding himself back despite wanting to kill the man because Qui Gon told him not to and using a saber he isn't comfortable with), but that he instead listens to Qui Gon and sticks to defending until Yoda can arrive and defeat him, instead of hacking him to pieces like a Sith would. Anakin is trying very hard to suppress his Sith tendencies because he believes that his friends will betray him again (fun fact: Vader never actually saw the whole "Order 66" thing as betraying his friends, but as them betraying him) if he shows them that he is dangerous and that Padme might become afraid of him and his power, something I'll deal with later on.
Dooku is actually impressed by both Vader's skill and power, he –like the good Sith that he is- finds a way to pay the "Padawan" a compliment while trying to manipulate him. Also, need I mention the fact that Obi Wan was useless in that fight? Yes? Fine, I'll explain it too.
Obi Wan was utterly useless during the fight because he's still adjusting to his younger body –much like Anakin-. However, while Anakin has been training till his last breath and killing Jedi by the dozens, Obi Wan has been hiding on Tatooine, with almost zero opportunities to fight against lightsaber-wielding opponents, so when he's confronted by Count Dooku -the greatest swordsman in the Jedi Order before his departure- when he has just been through five whole years of near immobility, he is unable to defend against, much less actually fight the man in any way.
Lastly, the long-awaited elaboration for the hallucination scene. Oh, boy… this is going to be long. Really long…
For starters, the incident begins as soon as Anakin's arm is cut off by Dooku, when he "sees red". This is an indication that he's lashing out and using the –immense- power of the Dark Side to do so. What's interesting about this scene is that for Vader, there is no more "Geonosis", or "Hangar Bay", or "Dooku". It's just a nameless enemy (not even classified as a Jedi) he must defeat. Also, several memories of his time as Vader flash before his eyes, including two moments from the ending of Jedi Fallen Order where he fights Cal and Cere while they try to escape him, which are much like the other instances where this happens, like the other time where the mention of "unnatural abilities" caused a flash of memory from when he was sitting next to Palpatine in the Opera House from Revenge of the Sith. Only this time, these visions are much more severe, to the point where something as simple as Obi Wan's still form is immediately replaced by Padme's in Vader's mind.
To be more specific, even something as his sudden difficulty to breath is perceived as a failure of his suit's breathing systems.
The moment where he throws objects at Dooku triggers the first memory of Cal's escape, where Vader threw several tiles from both the floor and walls at the Jedi Padawan.
Qui Gon's attempts to reason with Vader are barely registered as a "voice in the back of my mindtelling me to stop what I was doing". Those are his words, not mine.
Vader mentions that Palpatine will punish him if he fails, which means he isn't registering that he travelled back in time, instead believing that he is still in the Emperor's service.
He tried to Force Crush Dooku in the same way Cere did to him at the end of Fallen Order, which should be a fairly recent memory considering he came from roughly five or so years into the Emperor's rule.
When Dooku is frozen in fear Vader perceives this as him praying for help, something I'm sure many Jedi did before he killed them and he then mentions that his target's (Dooku's) death would be seen as sign of the Empire's strength, again showing that his perception of reality is faulty in this scene.
When Qui Gon jumps in to help his old Master by creating a Force Barrier around him (the one thing that I'll thank the Sequels for is that they gave Force Abilities to the Force Ghosts) Vader once again flashes to the moment where he is attacking Cere Junda.
Vader also perceives Qui Gon's (now fully materialized) form as a generic man, only being able to make a rough guess about his age, not making out any facial features or other characteristics.
When Dooku puts Obi Wan in danger to distract Vader he sees the falling pipe as a "fiery pillar" and Obi Wan's unconscious form as Padme's.
Vader perceives his physical exhaustion as his respirator failing and thinks about how Palpatine will punish him for his failure to kill his target, probably thinking that he was sent to the location he is in (never specified in the latter parts of the scene) by him because of a mission.
Lastly, when Padme, Jango and the Clones show up and find him on the ground, he's only able to identify Padme and the troopers, but he thinks that Jango is Rex because he has the same voice as him and similarly colored armor.
So…yeah, Anakin isn't doing too good at the end of this chapter, but things will start to look up in the next one (at least I hope they will). There are some scenes that still need to be written like Anakin waking up in the Halls of Healing and talking with Obi Wan about the "I'm actually Darth Vader" thing, but that is all for next time. Until then, May the Force be with you!
