Chapter Ten: The Way In

The herd also had been forced to find shelter when it started to rain. They had found a large cavern where the herd could hide out and stay dry from the rain. Hours had passed as They watched as the rain poured, lightning flashed and thunder boomed on the outside of the cave. The younger dragons curled up next to the adults in an effort to feel safe and warm. Sky kept watch over them from a high vantage point. He glanced about and saw his sister sleeping next to the Hivewing dragonets and began to think about how the previous day played out. Though he didn't want to make his sister unhappy, he couldn't let that Mudwing undermine his authority. But he didn't dwell on his thoughts for too long as the rain stopped pouring and he could see rays of sunshine shining down.

Sky roared into the cave and it scared a few of the herd awake and they started to rise. The leading Skywing jumped down from his perch and glided to the cave entrance. When he landed, he gave another roar to get them moving. Practically everyone in the herd groaned as they started moving once again. Sky just huffed as he started leading them once again. At the back of the herd Peril just sighed as she could see that the herd was once again being run ragged by her brother. But she didn't say anything as she continued to follow them with the two Hivewing dragonets running ahead of her.

Clay and Plio had finally left the cave entrance and Dune behind them as they walked through the dimly lit tunnels. The rest of the group looked between themselves and the duo before they too started walking again. Suri then asked, "Do you think that there's another way out of here?"

"If there is one," Clay said as Plio climbed up Meatlug's back, "then we'll find one, Suri."

"I sure hope so." Meatlug said with a huff. She shook her head and said, "I'm just about ready for this trip to be over."

"I couldn't agree with you more." Baylene said as they walked through the darkness. Clay however was silent as they walked along, the thought of Dune's lifeless body still fresh in his mind. Plio glanced back to her adopted son and could see the look on his face. She knew that he was still feeling guilty about what had happened. Leaning towards him she said, "Clay."

The Mudwing looked to her and she said, "I know that Dune's death is something that you didn't want to happen, but you should know that it was his choice to defend you."

"Yeah." Clay said with a nod of his head. Then he said, "I just wish-"

"I know." Plio said, not wanting Clay to feel sad about it. They didn't talk anymore as they continued through the caves.

The sunlight warmed the wyvern as Smaug walked through the barren lands. He grew frustrated when he couldn't find the trail of the herd. The rain had washed away both the tracks and the scent of the dragon herd and now Smaug was just wondering around, trying to find some clue as to where they had gone. Smaug huffed as he sniffed, climbed on rocks and searched and searched. With an angry growl, Smaug then shouted, "I will find you!"

Then he raised his head and let loose another roar that echoed through the rocky terrain.

The herd continued to walk through the rocky terrain for what seemed like hours. Mostly everyone was becoming tired once again from traveling nonstop. The effects of exhaustion was getting to everyone, but the younglings at most. Both the Hivewing brothers were breathing heavily as they started to fall behind. One of the brothers collapsed from fatigue and his brother stopped and turned to him. The brother called out for help and stayed with his brother. Sky did hear the sounds of the dragonet, but just turned his attention ahead with a huff.

The Hivewing tried to help his brother stand, but the little dragon was beyond tired. He licked the top of his brother's head before moving to the side and pushed against his brother like he had seen Clay do. He looked to the moving herd and cried out once again but they didn't stop. The Hivewing kept pushing his brother, but the dragonet didn't move. The Hivewing gave one more call for help, and this time it was answered. They both looked up to see a smiling Peril standing before them. She then reassured them, "It's okay, little guys."

It seemed to brighten them and even more so when she said, "We're going to make it." She even smiled when she said, "We're all going to make it."

The two Hivewing brothers looked to each other and squeaked at one another as she walked around them. Then gently nudging the exhausted dragonet to his feet, he squealed as he was able to stand back up. Then she nudged him again to get the little dragon moving again. As the Hivewing brothers started walking again, Peril couldn't help but look back down the way that the herd had come. The Skywing was becoming worried for both Clay and the others who had fallen behind. She badly wanted to go back and find them, but she also knew that her brother wouldn't like that. So with a sad sigh, Peril turned and followed after the herd again.

The cave didn't get any darker, but it didn't get any brighter as the group continued to walk in the dark. Yar rode on Meatlug's back while Plio sat behind Clay's head and Zini and Suri were on Baylene's head. Zini decided to pass the time by playing a game. He glanced down and said, "Okay, okay. Let's do it again, you guys. Let's do it again." Then he said, "Uh, I spy with my little eye-"

"Another rock." A bored Yar said from down below. Zini looked to his dad and smiled as he complimented, "You got it again! Ooh! You sure are good!"

"Thanks." Yar said with a deadpanned glance to Plio. But she just shrugged as they kept going. Meatlug then said, "Well, I'll go ahead and tell you what I spy right now. A dead end."

She was right as they had come up to the end of the cave. All that was in front of them was a wall made of rocks. Not seeing any way around them, Clay sighed in disappointment. Yar looked to everyone and asked, "What do you think that we should do now?"

"I guess we'll just have to go back." Clay suggested, not able to think of anything better. They all started to turn around, but Zini started sniffing the air and told them, "Hold on a moment, everyone. I'm getting something."

He carefully leaned out from Baylene's head and continued sniffing. Suri climbed up to the top of her friend's head and then asked, "Zini, what do you smell?"

"Do you smell that, Suri?" Her uncle asked when she joined him. Suri took a few whiffs and was able to smell what he was smelling and nodded, "Yeah, I do."

They both dropped down from Baylene's head and landed in a hunter's crouch before rushing towards the wall. Clay rushed over as well and looked up to see Suri watching Zini digging through the rocks. The Scavenger grunted as he was able to make a few stones come loose and fall to the floor. He wrapped his hands around one rock and it took a little effort to pull it out. When he did, the stone tumbled to the ground and light shone through the hole he made. Everyone gasped at the sight and Meatlug said with an impressed smile, "Get a load of that, everybody."

"Good show, Zini." Baylene said with a nod of her head. Clay glanced back and said, "Everybody stand back. We're getting out of here!"

He ran forward and grasped a boulder with his talons. He pulled it out before grabbing onto another. But when he removed it and a third rock, the entire wall started to shake. Zini and Suri both let out startled cries and then jumped off when they could feel the wall becoming unstable. When they dropped down to the ground, they ran for cover. Meatlug looked up and gasped when she saw a loose boulder starting to fall from its perch and it was directly over Clay. She shouted to him, "Clay, look out! Above you!"

Clay backed away as boulders of different shapes and sizes fell around him. He turned tail and ran to safety as more and more rocks fell to the ground. When he looked back he noticed that the light from the hole was starting to flicker from the falling rocks. It was soon covered up and blocking out the light of the outside world. When the rocks stopped falling Clay looked at the wall in disbelief. He glared as got back up and shouted, "No!"

His shout echoed through the cave while he rushed at the wall again and slammed his head into one of the boulders, smashing it in half. Everyone else watched as the Mudwing went on a rampage as he roared and punched another rock creating cracks in it. Then raising up on his hindlegs he balled up his talons before bringing them down in anger. Clay glanced back to see everyone watching him. Clay then let out another angry roar as he threw his shoulder against another large boulder. Plio carefully made her way down, and reassured her father when he tried to stop her with a hand gesture. She waited as Clay rushed up to the rock wall and slammed his head against it. The Mudwing backed away from the boulder and shook his head as a little blood from the blow trickled from a gash. But before he could continue to vent his frustrations, he felt a calming hand against his wing. Clay looked to his side with a glare and found himself staring at his adopted mother. The Mudwing's intense gaze slowly fell as he took deep breaths and tears started to well up in his eyes. Plio then came closer and wrapped her arms around his neck as she said, "It's okay, Clay. We will find another way out."

"I know, I know." Clay said as he continued to breath heavily. He shook his head and said, "I just wanted…" He swallowed the lump in his throat and said, "I just wanted us to finally get to safety."

"We know." Plio said as she understood. Then she said, "We just need to keep calm."

"Right." Clay said as he sat down. Plio then gestured for him to lower his head. Clay obeyed and when he did, Plio was able to wipe away the blood on his forehead. The others back near the tunnel were impressed by how the situation had turned better. Clay sat down, but didn't stay sitting long as heavy footsteps walked up to them. Plio and Clay looked back to see Baylene walking up to them and she lowered her head, "You've done quite a lot for us, Clay. You and your family were the only ones to care for us. And we're all here together, aren't we?"

Clay nodded and Baylene smiled to see that she had lifted the Mudwing's spirit a little. The purple Hydra then said, "And we're not going to waste our good fortune by simply giving up and dying in this cave, are we?"

Clay shook his head this time and Baylene lightly nudged his snout with hers. Baylene then told him, "You've made me feel like I still have a purpose in this world. And you know what…" Another shake of his head and she smirked as she said, "You were completely right. And I'm going to go on believing it." She started to raise up and said, "And I for one, am not willing to let us die here."

Using her tail to keep her balance, Baylene then raised her two legs with a growl. She roared before dropping down and slamming them against the rock wall. Her blow to the wall caused rocks to start falling again, although the heavier stones didn't come down. Up from her spot, Meatlug thought of her friend's words before a look of determination adorned her features. Preparing to charge, Meatlug let out her own roar before charging forward. She smashed her head against one boulder before chomping down another one. The two kept repeating the process and even Toothless got involved. The Nightfury was able to pull a few boulders out and then dug his way through the rock wall. Baylene let loose another roar as she put a good deal of strength into what she was doing. Clay, Plio, Yar, Zini and Suri all watched in amazement as the three continued fighting. Baylene let out a bellow as she came down and gritted her teeth from the action. With a growl of his own, Clay got back up and rushed at the rock wall again. He grasped a boulder with his talons and tugged with all of his strength. Baylene rose back one more time and when she came down on the wall, it did the trick and they broke through. All four dragons yelped in surprise when they fell forward and a giant dust cloud formed around them. Clay, Baylene, Meatlug and Toothless all coughed from the dust and looked to see light once again filling the cave. But when they looked into the outside world, everyone gasped at what they saw. Baylene smiled as she said, "Oh, my goodness."

They all took their first steps into nesting grounds, and the place was in deed very beautiful. There was lush forests, a few waterfalls, a large lake and it was surrounded by mountains. Meatlug looked very happy as she looked around and said, "The nesting grounds. We finally made it. And it's- it's untouched."

They were all amazed by the place and could see flocks of smaller dragons and birds flying around. They walked into the sun filled valley and everyone of them were happy to have finally made it. Plio looked to her family and said with a grin, "Our new home."

"And it comes with a pool!" Zini shouted, and Suri giggled from her uncle's craziness. The two Scavengers, Toothless and Baylene all walked deeper into the valley and Zini started singing, "Yodelay-yodelay-yodelayheehoo!"

Suri just laughed as she ran after her uncle. Even Baylene laughed from the Scavenger's silliness. Zini then quickly climbed up the Hydra before reaching her head. When he stood on her snout, Zini jumped off and shouted, "Cannonball!"

He whooped all the way down into the water. He landed with a small splash and Baylene gave an unimpressed huff, "Ha. Amateur. Let me show you how it's done."

Zini had swum to a piece of drift wood and cried out when Baylene threw herself into the water with a shout, "Look out below, little Scavenger!"

Zini tried to keep his balance as the wave she created made his piece of driftwood float along the lake. From up at the top of a tree, Suri laughed from the way her uncle looked. Toothless came to a stop on top of a hill and set his rock down before sitting down himself. The Nightfury panted as he looked about the fun that his friends were having.

From at the entrance of the cave, Clay, Yar, Plio and Meatlug hadn't moved from their spot. Clay looked about once more and said, "Not a bad place." But something was bugging him and he asked, "But I don't get something. Where's the herd? I thought that they'd be here by now."

"Not to mention Peril." Plio teasingly said to Yar. The older Scavenger only chuckled and nodded. They looked to Clay and Meatlug as the Gronkle chuckled as well. Then she assured Clay, "Don't worry, they'll get here-" She looked to her left and noticed something as she said, "Soon enough."

"Meatlug?" Clay asked as she walked across the hill. He, Plio and Yar all walked up beside her and saw that her eyes widened to a sight. She was horrified with what she saw and said, "Oh, no. That's not good."

Clay looked to where she was looking and saw a giant wall of rocks between two of the valley walls. Meatlug shook her head and said, "I spoke a bit too soon."

"What is it, Meatlug?" Clay asked, not understanding the situation. Meatlug then told him, "That is the way that we used to get in here, Clay. The old way."

Clay's eyes widened as he realized what she was saying. There was no safe way down the rocks as it was practically a drop. Clay shook his head and started to turn as he said, "They'll never make it over that thing."

He quickly started running back to the entrance. Meatlug turned and shouted, "Clay, wait a minute! Wait a minute!"

Clay stopped and turned to her. Meatlug looked serious as she told him, "Sky will eat you alive if you go and take charge."

"Let him try." Clay said with a determined look before rushing back into the cave. Plio and Yar looked really worried as Clay disappeared into the darkness of the cave. They both looked to Meatlug when she sighed and turned to the wall as said, "Mm. I sure hope that Sky's in a listening mood."

All three friends looked to each other and knew that this could spell disaster for Clay and everyone in the herd.

Clay panted as he ran back through the dark caves. The Mudwing was determined not to let anyone in the herd, from its leader to the other members go over the wall. He just hoped that he would make it in time to stop them. And if Sky were to say anything, then Clay would be more than happy to knock the Skywing down a few pegs. Clay made himself go faster through the tunnels in an effort to catch up to them.

The herd finally entered the passageway that led into the nesting grounds. Sky smiled as he thought that their journey was nearly over. But when he rounded the bend, his smile dropped when he too saw the wall that separated them from their home.

Outside the caves and trying to find the herd's trail, Smaug suddenly picked up a scent. A sadistic grin crawled up his face and he said with malcontent, "Finally. I'm coming. For I am fire." He launched himself off the rock and was able to glide on a breeze as he added, "I am…" Smaug had a murderous glare in his eyes when he said, "Death."

Author's Note: I decided to end it here because I wanted to make the next chapter a little bit longer. Plus, I've got a good little bit more planned for this story. I look forward to reading your reviews. Be sure to leave a comment either about if I've done something wrong or if you want something specifically to happen. See you next time.
