Personal touches

It was the same day, everyone had just come home from the second house in Kansas, while the others were catching up on sleep from the overnight rescue and Kayo and Scott were dealing with their kids.

Kayo yawned as she walked into an argument between Scott and Lucy, Scott made a head nod to the young blonde girl sat on the floor with her arms crossed pouting, "You ready to go back to bed Lucy,"

Lucy stands up and walked over to her mother who arms were wide open, "Yes mommy,"

Kayo picks her up and grabs the warm milk bottle from the bottle warmer on the shelf, "Your too tired for a bath aren't you,"

Lucy gave a sleepy yawn as she drank the warm milk, "Yeah,"

Scott mouthed the word 'thank you' and gave a wave to the sleepy baby who waved back with her free hand, which was slung over Kayo's shoulder.

Kayo nodded and walked to the back of the island and carrying Lucy to her room, she lay her on her bed and kissed her forehead, "Nighty night sugar plum,"

Kayo smiled as she walked out the room, she loved seeing her children asleep especially Lucy as she would always push the covers off herself whenever Kayo and Scott weren't looking. Closing the door and strolling back into the kitchen she wraps her arm round Scott back, "Lucy is down so we have one kid to deal with this morning,"

Scott sighed, "I can't believe she made a big thing out of her breakfast, all I did was stop her pouring the milk herself,"

"It happens, they both woke up early this morning at the other house then in the car when your dad went over the speed bumps," Kayo explained as studied Scott's hair from the back which reminded her off her daughters hair colour, "I still want to know where he blonde hair has come from because me and you are not blonde,"

"Mum had blonde hair," Scott responded, with a mouth full of milk.

After deciding to dump the glass in the sink he re-opened the lid to take another mouth full but this time right out of the carton.

"Scott!" Kayo chastised, slapping him in his abs, "That's disgusting!"

He lowered the carton and laughed cheekily at his wife, earning himself a rush of glares back from her.

"Mummy!" Freddie called from the door to the back garden, "Come outside, I'll show you my new friend,"

"You better hope it's not a butterfly," Scott teased as Kayo let go of his hand.

Meeting her son at the door Kayo really hoped it wasn't a butterfly, she didn't want to disappoint her son by saying that it wasn't allowed in the house. Plus they already had a spider locked in a cage which would add to the collection.

"No, were not letting that in the house because I'm scared of butterflies," Kayo shrieked as her fears came back to alive which she had managed to avoid recently.

"No not that, this," Freddie pointed to the little egg that looked like it was about to hatch they both bent down next to the bush, "What is it?"

Leaning in, Kayo took the leafy green oval into her hands and held into her lap for her son to look at bringing out her wrist com she took a quick scan, "Hey John, are you receiving this scan?"

"Yes. Oh, Kayo you need to get it somewhere warm the egg is going to hatch quick," John pointed out urgently.

"Like where?" Kayo asked sounded terrified.

"Brains lab, I'll tell him to set up a nicu for you," John rubbed his elbow in need of an explanation. He didn't have experience in keeping pets himself, but this one may be a little different.

Kayo cradled the egg and she and Freddie both ran across the hallway, downstairs and into the lab where Brains was waiting with a NICU. Freddie was mesmerized by what he was about to witness. The green egg rocked back and forth until cracks started to appear then they increased in size. It stopped for a few seconds and the pair looked at Brains. He shrugged as this was new to him too, however a large crack spread from the base of the egg to the middle and the shell quickly spit in half revealing what was inside.

"What is the animal? Kayo asked curiously, jumping back at what came out.

"I'm scanning it now it's... it's a green Pokemon," John crowed turning his head in confusion as he didn't think that was even possible.

"You have to be kidding right John, there not even real," Kayo refuted as Freddie pouted, "Sorry buddy didn't mean to ruin your tv show,"

"Nope, it's a 100% grass Pokemon Kayo," John clarified swiping the information to Kayo's wrist watch.

"Aw it's so cute!" Freddie cheered as he clapped his hands together.

"It certainly is Freddie," Brains smiled as he went to open the door of the NICU, "His shell is so smooth,"

"All right, Fry your not going anywhere near that animal," Kayo warned pulling back her son away from the animal.

"Aw mum but I found it," Freddie whined, "It's harmless right Brains?"

"Yeah right Freddie, totally harmless Kayo," Brains held up the animal and inspected him.

"Bulbasaur?" The green animal asked curiously as he bounced up and down in Brains hands with his hands reaching out towards Kayo.

"Wow, he really likes you mum," Freddie grinned.

Kayo took him from Brains hand, "I guess your cute," Bulbasaur touched her nose, causing Kayo to giggle, "Got to hope your dad complies with us keeping this Pokemon,"

"He can stay down here Kayo in the nicu until he has fully grown," Brains volunteered, "I've definitely never seen anything like this before,"

"I'll snap a photo and show your dad," Kayo exclaimed as she brought out her phone, taking a photo and sent it to Scott with the caption 'Animal alert.'

Downstairs in the kitchen Scott received the photo from Kayo and text back with a laughing emoji. However, he didn't know why she didn't send it over on her wrist watch, shrugging it off Scott continued to tidy up Lucy's toys from earlier and afterwards plodded his feet up on the couch enjoying his alone time for once finishing the report of the bomb at the ski centre.

When 20 minutes past Scott was finishing his last word when Gordon was shivering loudly after just coming out of the pool covered in rashes, "How much chlorine did you put in the pool Scott?"

"300 g I think of the top of my head," Scott hesitatingly answered. But it was obviously the wrong answer because Gordon went ballistic on Scott.

"I said 30 g not 300 g Scott!" Gordon deadpanned. He couldn't believe what he was hearing, "There is a chart here if you had needed it," he pointed to the chart placed on the fridge in disgust.

Scott scratched his head and put down his laptop, "Whoops, sorry Gordon,"

"You could have put your son's life in danger too if he wasn't late for his swimming lesson!" Gordon groaned.

"In my defense I haven't done the chlorine in the pool for over a year because grandma always did it," Scott defended himself as Gordon stormed out, "Also Freddie's can't do his lesson today, sorry forgot to tell you," he called down the hall where Gordon put his middle finger up at his brother.

Coming up the stairs, Kayo had Freddie holding her hand like she did with the Pokemon. She was excited about seeing the Pokemon evolve and grow and so was Freddie as he had seen the tv show, but not in real life.

"Scott, please don't tell me your still drinking directly out of the carton," Kayo huffed, attempting to teach Scott a lesson but grabbing the cartoon while he was drinking out of it.

"What?" Scott turned away with the cartoon in his hands and with the other wiping his mouth, "No, not me,"

Kayo dramatically rolled her eyes and took the carton out of his hands. Opening the cupboard which contained the glasses she poured some milk into the glass. While Freddie grabbed a juice box and sat at the breakfast bar with a giggling at his parents small fight.

Stamping the glass on the bar, Kayo hissed, "There's no more after that you've had enough for the day,"

Scott was about to argue but spotted the cartoon of orange juice sat in the corner, he sighed and decided to give in, "Yes love,"

"Ha ha, daddy your just got told off," Freddie chirped pointing his finger at Scott.

Kayo grinned as she ruffled Freddie's hair, "Even your 6 year son has more common sense than you,"

"Mine?" Scott scoffed, "You mean ours, he's 50% yours too, you can't let me take all the credit,"

"Fine, but he has my personality and nose," Kayo mocked through her laughter, bopping her son on the nose which made Freddie giggle.

"Yeah and he has my curly hair," Scott commented pushing a stray of curly hair behind his son's ear, "Isn't that right fry,"

"Why do you call me fry?" Freddie asked, "You've never called Lucy it,"

"Scott, can I talk to you for a second by the portraits?" Kayo requested.

Scott nodded as Kayo got out of her seat, commanding Freddie to stay put.

"What do we tell him?" Kayo questioned, "That if it wasn't for your brothers, then he would of not have not got the nickname,"

Scott shrugged, "There's that or we could make something up and tell him properly when he's older,"

Kayo rolled her eyes as a memory came back, "What like the time you told him cheese wasn't real?"

"I had the case of the flu that day and didn't want him to get it," Scott frowned, defending himself.

Kayo chuckled speechlessly, and they both sat back down, finding Freddie looking pleasantly eager for an answer.

"We called you fry because when uncle Alan was at school he couldn't remember your name so he always called you Fry as it fries were his favorite food, instead of Freddie and-" Kayo got cut off when Scott finished the explanation in his version.

"From then it caught on to me and your mum," Scott muttered, "Like we call your sister blueberry or angel depending on her mood,"

An egg timer noise went off from behind them. Looking behind him Freddie knew what that meant. Grabbing some massaging cream from the cupboard Scott sighed, he hated seeing his son in pain, turning back Freddie pulled puppy dog eyes at his parents, as cute as they were Scott and Kayo wasn't allowed to put the medicine off.

"At least your not getting a shot Fry," Scott began, kneeling in front of his anxious son, "That's worse,"

"Scott!" Kayo growled, poking him softly in the abs.

"What I'm trying to make him feel better," Scott mumbled as he took sight of Kayo's glare.

"No daddy, No!" Freddie cried into Kayo's shoulder, "It hurts too much,"

"Scott, just do it, now!" Kayo shouted as Freddie was trying to wiggle out of his mother's grip. Kayo sighed and managed to grab him before he could slip away.

Grabbing Freddie's hand Scott slowly massaged the cream causing Freddie to cry out in pain. While both of the parents were whispering comforting words to him they both managed to stay calm enough to not raise their voice at him.

"Hey, it's alright buddy," Kayo kissed his forward, "It will be over in a minute,"

Once Scott finished Kayo carried Freddie into her and Scott's bedroom while he made lunch. She Steadily walked to the corner of the room where the rocking chair was placed, but stopped by the window where she gazed out watching Gordon drain the pool in frustration after the incident this morning. Smiling she waved to him outside and he waved back.

"I think getting a shot is better mummy," Freddie piped up.

"Oh really you think so," Kayo laughed nervously, "Because I disagree,"

Kayo sat quietly in the rocking chair cradling Freddie in her arms wrapped in a blue train blanket despite being six the rocking chair was the secret to calming children down at any age. After a while, Kayo looked down at Freddie's finger and realised how brightly red they looked, Virgil did say it would be painful for him but she didn't think it would be this painful for all three of them.

"Hey," Virgil greeted as he opened the door.

"Hi, can I help you with something," Kayo whispered to Virgil who had let himself in and wondered over to his brothers wardrobe.

Virgil opened the wardrobe doors, "I'm just trying to find Scott's suit jacket,"

"It's the top left on the first row," Kayo pointed to the row as she raised her eyebrows in suspicion, "How many times have you borrowed it?"

"I've borrowed it lots of time without him knowing," Virgil answered before realising that he just said something he shouldn't of said, "Perhaps I shouldn't of said that out loud,"

Kayo gave him a stern glare before waving him off, "Just take it he hardly ever goes in that section of the wardrobe anyway so you might just get away with it,"

"What's up with him?" Virgil asked as he spied the sleepy boy wrapped in the blanket, "Is he sick?"

Kayo shook her head and showed Virgil her son's red fingers, "No, Scott had to massage Freddie's numb fingers,"

"He will get use to the pain with within the next coming weeks," Virgil assured, running his fingers along the red patches making Freddie wince at the pain, "Sorry buddy didn't mean to wake you," picking up the suit he walked towards the door, "Bye I'll see you both around,"

"I'm not tired anymore," Freddie announced, knocking the blanket onto the floor, "I'm bored,"

"You can go and get lunch while I check on your sister," Kayo suggested, Freddie slipped down from Kayo's lap and ran out of the room leaving the blanket spread on the floor. However, Kayo waited for her son to leave the room before picking the blanket up and going into the bedroom next door.

In the front of the bedroom, Jeff and Sophie were led in the bed. They both went to bed a little past midnight, Sophie was tired and disappointed she didn't get the trophy she thought she had won but on the other hand she got the number one treatment at the ceremony. Jeff however fell straight to asleep last night after a long drive home, stripping off and snuggled up with his girlfriend who was already snoring.

Sophie stroked a finger down Jeff's left cheek softly waking him up, "Hey,"

Jeff glanced over his shoulder and smiled at his girlfriend, "Hey, how did you sleep?"

"Better than ever but my back hurts from the bed in the other house," Sophie chuckled, rubbing her back in pain.

"Yeah, the couch wasn't comfortable either down there," Jeff answered honestly shuffling his position on the bed, "Sorry I didn't come to see you last night I wasn't aware of the situation because John blocked me out of the conversation and you were cute when you were sleeping,"

"Look I'm sorry," John apologised after his hologram showed up, "It wasn't good for your health, as much as we wanted you there it wasn't safe,"

Sophie turned over on the bed and pressed the electric bed side clock, "Did we seriously sleep till 1 pm,"

"It looks like it," Jeff smirked rubbing his eyes, "Unless were dreaming, are you hungry?"

"Yeah starving," Sophie answered as they both sprung up from the bed and they walked out to the kitchen, "Hey guys what's for lunch?"

Scott rolled his eyes dramatically, "How many other people can join me in the kitchen? Fish fingers and chips for Freddie and Alan,"

"Sausages for me," Gordon interrupted who was lying on the couch with an ice pack on his back making the rashes decrease in size.

"Me two!" Virgil called back.

"If I recall correctly, we were the ones who asked first, so we would like a fry up Scott please brunch style," Jeff pointed out deliberately glaring at Scott who scowled in response.

"Make your own dad," Scott growled, tossing the packet of bacon to him, "There that will start you off,"

Bye the time Scott had served everyone's lunch except for Jeff's and Sophie's, Kayo was pretty annoyed at the fact that there was no veg on Freddie's or Lucy's plate. Scott could pick up the sign pretty quickly when she caught the sight Kayo's frown, getting up he steamed some broccoli in the microwave and tipped onto his sons plate now the plate was filled up with bright colours and put some aside for when Lucy was ready to eat.

A loud skipping noise came towards them. Looking back Kayo said, "Hey Lucy you feeling better?"

"Mhmm I heard Freddie crying earlier, so I played with my toys until I smelt food," Lucy replied biting into her fish fingers.

"I was worried about you," Kayo brushed fingers through Lucy's knotty hair, "Because you slept for 6 straight hours, I had to come and check on you to make sure you were still breathing,"

"Sorry," Lucy apologised before pulling away from the hair brush that was combing through her hair, "Ow mummy!"

"Scott, pass me a pair of scissors," Kayo ordered.

"What! No, your not cutting her hair," Scott protested, "It's too nice,"

"We'll do you have any other suggestions," Kayo crossed her arms and slammed the pink hairbrush onto the counter top, making everyone jump.

"I have some detangling spray if you want it," Jeff piped up, "I used to use it on the boys when they got knots in their hair,"

Kayo smiled, "Anything right now will be good otherwise the knots are getting cut out,"

Dumping Sophie's and his plate in the sink, Jeff went to get the spray from the bathroom and came within minutes.

"Here you go just soak the hair with the spray and comb it through," Jeff explained as he demonstarted on a section of Lucy's hair, "Easy and painless,"

After three combs, Kayo finally got the big knot out.

"There all knots free," Kayo smiled combing her fingers through her daughters neat and smooth hair, "Looks like I won't be needing these after all,"

Kayo slid the pair of scissors back to Alan, who passed them to Scott to put back in the kitchen draw. She looked back up to Scott who was nearly to tears because he didn't want her baby hair to go either. In return she gave him a smart smirk. The scissors would've been Kayo's last option as she had other ideas up her sleeve since she's had long hair for as long as she can remember.

"Thank you mum," Lucy turned around to kiss Kayo's nose.

Chuckling, Kayo returned the kiss, "Your welcome baby but you need to thank granddad to,"

"Oh," Lucy squeaked in realisation, "Thank you gramps,"

"Your welcome pumpkin," Jeff smiled running a hand through his hair, "Keep the spray for the future Kayo I'm sure you will need it again,"

"More like every day!" Kayo giggled.

"Finished!" Freddie beamed, pushing his clean plate into the centre of the table.

"Finished!" Lucy repeated, also pushing her plate into the centre of the table where Scott collected them up and headed to the sink to wash up all the plates while everyone else hung around. Lucy was sat hugging her knees still sat on Kayo's lap with her long blonde hair dangling down her shoulders, "Mummy I don't like my hair it's not pwetty,"

"Lucy, your hair is beautiful," Sophie complimented, "Better than this ginger wig anyway,"

Sophie carefully ripped the ginger wig off her head, revealing her true hair style and colour. Everyone gasped when they saw how short her hair was. Looking around for the closet mirror Sophie got up from her seat and stood in front of it bouncing her hair a little making it look more presentable.

"What's wrong with it?" Sophie asked, seeing how shocked everyone looked.

She looked directly at Jeff who shook his head before giving a playful smirk making everyone else laugh except the kids who gave a shoulder shrug not knowing why everyone acted that way.

Jeff crept up to the mirror and wrapped his arms round Sophie tucking his chin onto her left shoulder staring into the mirror, "It's better than I expected actually it really suits you,"

"I suppose so," Sophie blushed looking through the mirror she spotted Alan staring directly at her, "Alan you like it?"

"Yeah I love it," Alan replied sliding his elbows on the surface before getting a jab in the rib by Virgil, "I mean... Yeah it's nice,"

"But mine is to long, no one else has long hair," Lucy sighed pushing away her mother's arms wrapped around her.

"I have longer hair than you," Kayo corrected looking over at Scott who was mumbling stuff, making her own decision she said, "You want it cut?"

"Yeah mummy do it," Lucy cheered, bouncing in Kayo's lap.

"You don't want to go to a kids hair salon with fun seats and happy stylists," Kayo tried to convince her daughter who was still wanting her to cut her hair.

Lucy shook her head in response and instead stayed with her original idea, "No mummy do it,"

"Aw I'm touched Lucy, you want mummy to do your first haircut," Kayo smiled sympathetically, "But I don't have experience cutting hair,"

"But you would cut a knot out her hair mum," Freddie interrupted obviously on his sisters side which was not helping Kayo, "Surely you would know,"

"Scott, any ideas," Kayo asked in a staid tone since she had been outvoted, "Back me up here,"

"Oh yeah, um..." Scott mumbled, "You are capable of doing anything Kayo so I agree with the kids,"

Kayo grunted under her breath and flicked her ponytail behind her shoulders, she had a lot of decisions to make and not a lot of time to do it in. She knew, of course, that she didn't want to let her daughter down, but on the other hand she has seen how fussy Lucy would get in when she is sat still for a long time. But Lucy was attached to Kayo and didn't want to see her unhappy if she didn't like her new haircut. Scott didn't help when he took the kids side which was typical of him but then he had bad experiences in the past which were understandable.

"Are you still mad at me for taking the kids side?" Scott frowned, kicking the kids out of the bedroom.

Kayo looked up from her laptop, "Yes but I need to make sure that I don't mess up Lucy's hair otherwise it won't live up to her name," she then continued, "Plus me and your brothers are out all day tomorrow training so you've got the kids to yourself,"

"What?" Scott blinked, "But dad and Sophie are both here?"

Kayo chuckled at how much information Scott had really contained, "Nope, your dad is going on his second date with Sophie for their anniversary," Kayo elaborated, "Your really need to listen more,"

"Great! Please don't mess this up," Scott begged, "I don't want to have to deal with multiple tantrums tomorrow,"

Kayo landed a hand on Scott's shoulder and reassured him, "Don't worry, I know what I'm doing,"

Nodding Scott walked out of the bedroom leaving Kayo alone to trust her with his daughter's precious blonde. He didn't want it cut either, but he had learnt from Freddie's first cut that sometimes you have to let go of the hardest features of your youngest child.

"Lucy! Are you ready?" Kayo shouted down the corridor and she came running to her mother's arm in her pj's with a towel wrapped round her hair, "Thanks for staying with her Alan,"

Kayo lifted Lucy tenderly and sat her down into the princess child's chair which was placed in the centre of the play room, following behind bulbasaur was tasked to keep Lucy occupied while Kayo did her thing. Kayo began rubbing the ends of her hair with the towel to make it less wet and rested it on the back of her daughter's neck to stop her hair tickling her.

Spinning the chair around to face her Kayo made sure that her daughter was focusing on what she was saying. Smiling, she began to explain to her what was going to happen.

"Now, I'm only going to trim the ends. But I need you to keep super still and keep your eyes on Bulbasaur as I'm using sharp scissors, okay?" Kayo's instructed. Her tone was stern enough that it wouldn't freak out her one-year-old daughter but Lucy was wise enough just to do what she told.

Behind her Kayo took a deep breath and started cutting, creating a guide line of an inch from the bottom of the blonde hair, cutting across surprisingly Lucy didn't whimper at all when the shears touched the back of her neck in fact she giggled which made bulbasaur copy.

Half an hour later...

Kayo did her final touches, but she was debating whether or not to give her daughter a fringe.

"Sophie!" Kayo called down the hallway, "I need help,"

"Coming!" Sophie called back.

"Hey, I need some girl advice, I can't decide if a fringe will suit her?"

"Yeah she will look more grown up with one," Sophie replied and sat on a pink bean bag, "You did a brilliant job Kayo of keeping it straight, have you thought about it as a hobby or career?"

Kayo stopped what she was doing and turned around.

"I think it may be more of a hobby than a career," Kayo replied, then turned back around and bent down, "Excuse me Bulbasaur,"

Bulbasaur jumped out of Lucy's lap and sprung into Sophie's making her jump, "Hey little guy,"

"All right, look down, Lucy," Kayo instructed as Lucy struggled to stay still, "Just a bit longer, baby,"

Kayo gathered the front section of Lucy's hair before slowly guiding her head down and cutting it. Putting the scissors down and picking up the pink Dyson hair dryer, Kayo dried the shoulder length, tangle free blonde hair.

"What do you think?" Kayo asked as she lifted Lucy out of the chair, "Did mummy do a good job?"

Lucy strolled to the vanity mirror and the two ladies watched her reaction. At first she frowned when she saw how short her hair was and Kayo was afraid that she would cry from her first reaction. Then to her surprise she laughed and started to play with her fringe, which she found was interesting.

"It's pwetty mum," Lucy laughed, feeling her own hair.

Kayo picked Lucy up and stroked her hair, "See it wasn't so bad was it, your a very good girl,"

"Yeah when she wants to be," Scott interrupted, poking his head through the door then gasped at how much hair was piled around the chair, "Wow that is a lot of hair,"

"I've had more off before Scott," Sophie murmured, standing up with Bulbasaur sat on her shoulder.

"Daddy!" Lucy chirped as she ran into Scott's arm.

"Hey princess, I love your hair," Scott complimented smiling sweetly.

"Me too, mummy will always do my hair," Lucy squealed pointing to her mother, "Right mummy?"

Kayo rolled her eyes in dramatic fashion and pinched Lucy's cheeks, "Oh ok then I guess so, how could I say no to that cute face,"

All three of the family members laughed at Kayos reaction. Kayo and Scott both exchanged looks while Sophie broke out in a laugh and Lucy played with her blonde locks until her heart contented. Sophie was sure she would fit in to the family perfectly even when she was dating the boss and she was especially looking forward to her 2 month anniversary date.
