Chapter 11!
It was now the night of Lorna's birthday, her visit with Levi was now drawing closer, it was hard for her to try and think of ways of getting out of the visit with him. She had slept each night with the window open in her room and she washed herself with cold water so she could catch a chill, but nothing was working so far even though it had been raining for days. She even thought about stuffing her face with food until she was sick, but knowing her luck it wouldn't work.
Lorna had decided to leave the room's window open once again tonight, she had even ate all of the leftover apple sponge cake the Landlord's wife had baked for her birthday. She put the fire out in the fireplace so the room would remain cold, but she had left one lit candle in it's holder burning on the bedside cabinet. She would need some light so she would be able to read the book of the Faith's family records.
Lorna made herself comfortable on the bed and lay on her stomach while she ate the rest of her apple sponge cake, she read through the missing pages Levi had given her again. She had read through those pages many times since he had given them to her, it was hard to memorize all of the names though. There was so many Faiths and random surnames she had never heard of before which sparked her interest, it meant she may have long lost family members out there in all of the districts. She even saw the surname of Smith appear about seventy years ago in her bloodline, a woman had married into the Faith family.
It made Lorna wonder if Erwin Smith was a distance relative of hers, but she didn't want to look into his bloodline because it would cost her a fortune. She spooned some of the cake into her mouth has she ran her finger tip down a burnt part of the page she was reading, it was hard to make out some of the names. There was nothing she could do about it though, so she would just have to memorize the names she could read on the pages.
After a while Lorna began to feel nauseous, her stomach was aching and she was actually beginning to feel warm. She groaned to herself while she sat up straight on the bed and placed the empty plate on the bedside cabinet, she shouldn't have eaten all of that cake until the morning. She opened the draw to the bedside cabinet and placed the envelope underneath her Mother's jewelry box which she kept in there for safe keeping, she then hid the book of the Faith's family records behind the bedside cabinet. She closed the cabinet's draw and climbed into bed, she just hope her aching stomach would last until the morning.
The Next Day.
Lorna woke up in the morning feeling clammy and dizzy, she believed the last few days of trying to make herself ill had finally worked. But she did think it may have worked too well, she had never felt so ill in all of her life. Her body was aching and her stomach was turning like there was no tomorrow, she was beginning to regret making herself ill to get out of the visit with Levi. She had no other choice, Levi wanted her to stay away from Erwin's office until this unknown documenter was found.
It had taken Lorna a lot of effort to get out of bed, her body didn't want to do anything today and she even struggled in the washroom when it was time for her morning wash. Her next challenge was getting down the staircase, her legs didn't want to work neither. She slowly walked down stairs has she held onto the banister with both of her hands, her head felt like it was going to explode. When she got to the bottom of the staircase she walked along the corridor until she got to the kitchen, she rested her hand on the door frame and coughed loudly.
" Morning..." Lorna said.
Lorna covered her mouth up when the Landlord's wife looked at her over her shoulder, she gave Lorna a sympathetic smile and wipe her hands on her apron. She was getting breakfast ready for her family, she was always up before everyone else in the Tavern. Rose walked over to Lorna and placed her hand on Lorna's forehead, she told her that she was burning up. Lorna told Rose that she was fine, but Rose wouldn't take no for answer.
" Get yourself back to bed, we can manage without you until you're feeling better." Rose said, she rested her hand on Lorna's back and lead her out of the kitchen. " I'll bring you some hot tea and a bowl of warm porridge up to your room, I'll even send Jacob to get Doctor Jaeger for you."
" I'll be fine, I just need to sleep it off!" Lorna said with a cough. " I don't want to bother Doctor Jaeger, I just need some rest and a bottle of lavender oil to ease my chest. I also need to get ready for my visit with Erwin Smith to discuss my fiances and help out with the garrison's laundry..."
" Hush yourself now my dear, you're going nowhere while you're ill!" Rose said. " I'll get you some lavender oil from the kitchen and I'll send Jacob to the market to get you some fruit. You just leave Commander Erwin to me, I'll get a message to him on your behalf when that Mike Zacharius arrives at the Tavern."
" You don't have to do that for me, I'll deal with him..." Lorna said.
The Landlord's wife told Lorna not to worry about a thing, she then told her to get her backside to her room before she carried her up those stairs. Lorna gave Rose a nod of her head and told her thank you before she slowly made her way back up the staircase. When Lorna got to the top of the staircase she bumped into Jacob, he had overslept again which now meant he was late for his morning chores.
Lorna said good morning to Jacob has she ruffled up his hair with her hand, but he shooed her hand away from his hair and told Lorna that she looked like a corpse before he hurried passed her. She looked over her shoulder at him has he ran down the staircase, he even looked at her over his shoulder and licked his tongue out at Lorna.
" You're not funny Jacob!" Lorna sighed.
" I know! " Jacob yelled.
Lorna walked along the corridor and entered her room, she then closed the door behind her. She got changed back into her nightgown and climbed into the bed, it wasn't long until the Landlord's wife came to the room with some breakfast for her. She placed a wooden tray down on her lap, there was a bowl of porridge and teacup of hot tea on the tray. She spoke to Lorna while she opened the room's shutters and lit the fireplace for her, she then told her Jacob had gone to fetch Doctor Jaeger before he began his chores.
Lorna didn't want Doctor Jaeger to visit her in case he was related to her and she also remembered that embarrassing moment she had in front of him in the bar area last year, but she didn't have the energy to argue with Rose right now. Rose told Lorna she would be back in an hours time to collect her tray, she told Lorna that she wanted to see every bit of her breakfast eaten by the time she got back to the room. Lorna told her okay while she picked the spoon up from the tray, she spooned some of the warm porridge into her mouth has she watched Rose leave the room.
It wasn't long until Lorna finished all of her breakfast and drank all of her hot tea, she then placed the tray on the bedside cabinet next to the bed. She lay back on the bed and closed her eyes for a moment, but before she knew it she was being shaken awake by someone. She groaned and pulled the blankets over her head, Lorna had fallen asleep after she had ate her breakfast.
" Lorna, you need to wake up now!" Rose said, her speaking tone was soft. " Doctor Jaeger is here, he would like to see you because he's got a busy schedule this morning. So sit up and make yourself presentable, he's waiting in corridor outside of your bedroom with young Eren."
" I told you I didn't need to see Doctor Jaeger, I'll be fine after a very long sleep!" Lorna sighed.
" Now don't be silly my dear, do you want Doctor Jaeger's time to be wasted when he could be else where in the district?" Rose asked while she pulled the blankets away from her. " Come on now, sit up and do has you're told. I may not be your Mother, but you need to be looked after if you like it or not!"
" But I will be fine, just leave me alone..." Lorna groaned.
" Get up before I drag you up young lady, that's an order!" Rose said, she pulled Lorna's nightgown over her legs and then rolled her over onto her back. " You're more worse than Jacob when he was ill, get up already or I'll be forced to get a bucket of cold water!"
Lorna sighed to herself while she opened her eyes, the things she had to do for a peaceful life. The Landlord's wife covered her back up with the blankets and fluffed up her pillows before she learned back on them. Rose then tired Lorna's hair up and wiped her mouth with an handkerchief, Rose told her she had some drool mixed with porridge running down her chin.
" All presentable and clean again, I'll tell Doctor Jaeger you're ready for him now." Rose smiled.
Lorna pulled the blankets to her chin has the Landlord's wife walked over to the room's door, she then opened it wide and invited the doctor into the room. She watched has Doctor Jaeger took his bag from Eren, he then told Eren to wait for him in the corridor while he dealt with his patient. But the Landlord's wife offered to take him to the kitchen with her, she said he can sit in the kitchen and keep her company until he was done.
The Landlord's wife gave Lorna a smile before she placed her hand on Eren's shoulder, she then disappear from her view with Eren while Doctor Jaeger entered the room. He closed the door behind him and walked over to the bed, he then placed his bag down on the bed. He greeted Lorna with a hello and asked her how she was feeling.
" My throat feels sore." Lorna said.
Lorna couldn't help but stare at him while he spoke with her, she could see a likeness of her of Mother in him. He had the same coloured eyes has her Mother, his lips were the same shape has hers and his cheek bones were the same too. It was daunting knowing that he could be her Mother's little brother she once told her about when she was young, but she didn't have any proof that she was related to him because she didn't even know her Mother's younger Brother's first name.
It wasn't long until the doctor was examining Lorna, he took her temperature with a thermometer and listened to her heartbeat with his stethoscope. He said her temperature was high and it sounded like she had mucus on her chest, he then went onto tell her that many people from the different districts had come down with the illness that she was suffering from at this very moment. He even told her that many soldiers and high ranking commanders had fallen ill just like the townsfolk, he said it was due to the weather change.
Doctor Jaeger then put all of his medical tools away and took a wooden tongue depressor from a small wooden box inside of his bag, he then told Lorna to open her mouth so he could take a look at her throat. She did what he asked and let him examine her throat, he then told her to relax her jaw muscles. She was going to ask him why he wanted her to relax her jaw muscles, but he told her not to talk whilst he was examining her throat.
" Your throat looks inflamed and swollen, I'm thinking you may have a bacterial infection." Doctor Jaeger said while he removed the tongue depressor from her mouth. " But some bed rest and medicine will cure your Influenza, the odd piece of fruit would do your immune system some good with the vitamins fruit obtains."
" What's Influenza?" Lorna asked.
" It's nothing but a common cold, there is no reason for you to worry." Doctor Jaeger smiled, he took a small brown coloured glass bottle from his bag. " I will leave this bottle of medicine on your bedside cabinet for you, I would like to take this medicine twice a day with some hot water. I would also like you to keep your fireplace lit because you will need to sweat your fever out and keep your window closed at night just in case the weather changes again. The medicine just contends thyme, lemon balm and honey. All the natural ingredients needed to cure your cold, but I will return in three days time to check up on you."
" Okay Doctor Jaeger, thank you." Lorna smiled.
" Doctor Jaeger sounds so formal, please call me Grisha." Doctor Jaeger said.
Lorna gave him a nod of her head and watched him place the bottle of medicine down on the bedside cabinet, he then closed his bag. She lay back on the bed and covered herself back up with the blankets while she yawned, but then she heard Doctor Jaeger clear his throat. She looked over at him and watched him picked his bag up from the bed, he then asked her an odd question.
" This may sound odd, but you remind me of someone from my childhood." Doctor Jaeger said while he checked his pocket watch. " Can I ask you the surname of your parents?"
Lorna quickly turned her gaze away from him and thought for a moment before she answered his question, she was going to have to give him a false surname just to be on the safe side. She didn't know if she was related to him just yet, she needed to purchase the Jaeger family records to know for sure that he was part of her bloodline. Lorna turned her full attention back to him and told him her parent's surname was Church, it was the only surname she could think of right now.
Doctor Jaeger gave Lorna a smile and pushed his glasses from the tip of his nose with his finger tip, he then told her he had never heard of the Church family's surname being used on the surface before and that he had only heard it being used once in The Underground City years ago when he was a young training medical practitioner. She raised her eyebrow at him has he said goodbye to her, he then walked over to the room's door and left.
Lorna stared at the door for a while until she rolled over onto her side, so he had visited The Underground City. She thought someone like him wouldn't have ventured down there because he seems like the kind of gentleman who wouldn't want to mingle with the unfortunate people who lived in The Underground City. The last doctor of The Underground City had been blackmailed by some thugs and then disappeared without a trace, his fate was unknown.
Lorna's thoughts were interrupted by the room's door being opened, she turned her gaze towards the door and saw the Landlord's wife standing in the doorway. She had a tray full of fruit with a teapot and a teacup sitting on it's saucer. She told Lorna she was here to make sure she had her medicine and then she was going to pour her a hot bath in the washroom down the corridor. Lorna told her okay while she sat up in the bed and looked over at the bottle of medicine from the bedside cabinet, she had gotten out of the visit with Levi at least.
