Chapter 13

The next day, Tamsin took Bo to Dr. Wilson's clinic. She explained to the doctor that she had suspected that Bo might have severe amnesia.

Karen Wilson pursed her lips as she stared at Bo. There was something in her eyes that Tamsin couldn't quite fathom.

"It's not something that I am not aware of," the doctor eventually replied. "Bo has mentioned to me several times that she would sometimes forget things."

"Little things, yes," Bo murmured. "Like an appointment with you, or maybe turning off the oven, but...not like this."

"What have you forgotten this time, Bo?"

Bo turned away, blushed. After giving Tamsin a quick glance, she answered, "something-something that I shouldn't have forgotten."

"Mhm," Dr. Wilson nodded, alternating her stare between Bo and Tamsin.

"It's not that she didn't remember this thing. She told me, in great confidence, that it was a dream of hers."

"Oh?" Karen raised her eyebrows. "Please, do describe."

"I'm sorry, Dr. Wilson. I can't describe it. It's...it's private," Bo muttered.

"It's alright, Bo. If you'd like the session to be private, she can-"

"No, no, Dr. Wilson, it's not-I just can't tell you." Bo gave her an apologetic smile. "I don't think...I don't think it matters anyway. It's something that I shouldn't have forgotten, not in a million years, but I thought for sure it was a dream."

Tamsin found it interesting that the doctor's eyes went cold for a split second. Those lips pursed tighter, as if she wanted to crush something with her jaw.

"So, doc, what's wrong with her? Does it have something to do with her insomnia? Maybe the side effect of those pills that you gave her?"

"It can't be the pills," Karen replied quickly. She turned to Bo. "You are taking your pills on time, right?"

Bo nodded firmly. " have not missed a dose."

Tamsin frowned. She just told me last night that she wasn't taking them. She thought. Was she lying to the doctor, or could she be forgetting that as well? Does she think that she was taking them while she wasn't, like she thought that night was a dream while it wasn't?

"And this is the first time that you've noticed it?"

Bo nodded. "Yeah...I don't think it has ever happened to me. I mean...well, who knows. Maybe it has but I just didn't know."

"Well...it's...it's certainly a strange case, if it's indeed amnesia. I think I'm going to order some tests. Blood tests to see if there is any infection. MRI to check for brain tumors-"

"You don't seriously think that she has brain tumors, do you?" Tamsin asked, genuinely concerned.

Karen turned to her and stared at her for a while. "At this point, it's hard to say. It's unlikely, given that she has no additional symptoms, unless she was keeping those as a secret from me as well."

Tamsin found it weird that she almost sounded acrimonious. "But you are sure that it wasn't caused by the medication that you gave her."

"I am sure of it." Karen replied, with her jaws clenched again.

Maybe I am the thing that she wants to crush with her jaws. Tamsin thought as she stared back with a fake smile.

"Blood test and MRI, huh?" Bo murmured nervously.

"There's no need to worry, Bo," Karen held Bo's shoulders gently. "I will take care of you, okay?"

Bo nodded with a smile.

"I'm sure there's nothing that you need to worry about, but if you don't mind, I'd like to ask you a few questions."

"Sure, ," Bo nodded.

Tamsin saw something fleeting across the doctor's eyes. She couldn't be sure whether it was fear or rage.

"Would you mind stepping out for a few minutes?" The doctor turned to Tamsin and requested. Tamsin found it funny that, even though the doctor was trying to disguise it, the subtle coldness still sept through her voice.

"It's alright, Dr. Wilson, Tamsin can stay." Bo smiled.

There came a brief, awkward silence.

"I think I'd better wait for you outside." Tamsin told Bo as she held her hand and squeezed it gently.

There it was again. The look of fear, or anger in the doctor's eyes.

Tamsin smirked. She leaned in and gave Bo a gentle kiss on her cheek, nearing the corner of her lips. "It's alright, Bo."

Completely caught off guard, Bo blushed and chuckled nervously.

"I'll be right right outside, okay? Call me if you need me," Tamsin said softly.

She didn't have to look to know that the doctor was back stabbing her with her eyes.

Sitting in the waiting area, Tamsin pondered the entire situation: her conversation with Alex, the bazaar story about Jennifer Lawson, Bo's weird amnesia, Dylan's message….

Alex seemed to think that something was wrong with this town. Of course there's something wrong with this damn town. What is not wrong with it? But, the cause of those deaths was related to this town? That's...weird.

Alex asked her specifically if her parents had once been away and then returned, just like Jennifer Lawson. Was leaving and returning to Crimson Rock somehow related to their death? But Dylan had never left Crimson Rock. He had been here his entire life. Why did he die too? Who killed him, and why? Did he really know that he was in danger when he sent her that postcard? How could he have known?

Tamsin closed her eyes. The image of Dylan lying in that dark cave haunted her. His eyes, that earring, those sparkling gems around them like they were spying on him….

Then, she thought of his message, Crimson Rock.

What exactly does this even mean? Did he think that something was wrong with this as well? Did he know something? Did he know about those deaths? Did he...know something? Did he leave her those messages inside the mansion? What was he trying to tell her?

Crimson Rock...Tamsin muttered that name. It was the first time that the sound of it somehow creeped her out. Crimson. Rock.

Maybe it was about this town. I should dig deeper. The library. There should be enough crap about this damn town that I can read….

She let her thoughts wander wildly. She let it bounce on everything that came to her. Everything.

Then, for some reasons, she was brought back to the last few moments with her mother.

They were in Crimson Rock hospital. Her mother was in a hospital bed. She practically lived there during the last few months of her life.

It was one of those days that she felt well, well enough that she could have visitors. With her cheeks sunken and that orange tint on her skin, she looked like a stranger to Tamsin. Her eyes, though, were the same, sharp, warm.

Tamsin couldn't remember why she was the only visitor in her mother's room that day. Maybe Dylan and her dad had gone to the cafeteria, or the vending machine. Maybe they had not come with her that day.

The nurses weren't there either. It was around the shift changing time, maybe. Or they just left so they could have a private, mother and daughter moment.

Tamsin remembered sitting in the bed staring at her mother. She remembered that fear, the fear of losing her, the fear of not knowing what to do or say when losing her. She had known that her mother would eventually die at least months ago, but she had never given much thought to it until then. That was the very first time that everything suddenly felt real to her.

She held her mother's hand. They chatted. She talked about her friends at school. She talked about her soccer practice. She talked about Dylan being mean to her. She talked about the teacher that she hated.

She made her mother smile….

At one point, she remembered her mother leaning in and whispering to her: be careful what you wish for.

The look on her face. It was as if she was revealing a great secret to her. It was as if she had removed a great burden. It was as if she was giving her her last words.

She repeated it, over and over, like it was some sort of magic spell, or...a curse….

Her voice echoed in the darkness. It sounded familiar but at the same time it sounded strange. Tamsin started to wonder if that piece of memory was real. Did her mother really say those things to her? Was it a wild dream?

"...Tamsin," a voice called her softly.

Tamsin jolted, waking up to Bo's smiling brown eyes.

"I'm ready to go. Are you?" Bo grinned.

"Yeah, sure," Tamsin stood up. "What did you and the doctor talk about?"

"She just asked me a few questions regarding my amnesia. She talked about the MRI and stuff. I'm gonna come back tomorrow for blood work."

*Did you tell her that the thing you forgot about was...you know."

Bo cleared her throat uncomfortably. "No, I...I couldn't tell anyone. I just...I told her that it was the last thing that I could forget about."

"What did she say?"

"She wasn't very happy that I kept secrets from her...gave me a lengthy lecture of how a patient shouldn't keep secrets from their doctors. Then she said she'd take care of me and figure out what was wrong with me."

Tamsin nodded. "Let's head home."

Tamsin knew that it was wrong for her to look forward to nighttime, but she couldn't help it.

She couldn't help her fluttering heart when Bo knocked on her door.

She couldn't help that rush of heat when Bo lay down beside her in that small bed of hers.

She couldn't help but take Bo into her arms as Bo fell asleep.

This moment, like many other things, wouldn't last, and she knew that, but at least she'd still have this moment.

Bo squirmed in her arms, muttering something. It took Tamsin a while to figure out that she was complaining about being watched by many blue eyes.

It wasn't the first time that she had heard Bo mentioning that. Tamsin chuckled and stroked her hair. Exhausted and relaxed, she slipped into her own dreams.

Or maybe, it wasn't her dream. It was reality, with some level of consciousness. It was a piece of memory, with a twist.

She was inside the cave again, with Dylan's dead body right in front of her. She was alone, angry and scared.

In silence, she was surrounded by many raw gems. Those blue gems, they were watching her indifferently.

Inhaling abruptly, Tamsin's eyes shot open. There was something, a flash, an idea, a thought. It quickly appeared and then disappeared, like the tongue of a snake. It made her blood run cold.

She let go of Bo and sat up. In fear, she panted. Her hands were cold and they were trembling.

Quietly, she left the room and entered the master suite. She stood there as she stared into the big wedding photo in front of her.

In darkness and with the faint moonlight, shadows creeped into the photo. It made Bo's smile almost creepy.

She froze there, as that wild thought of hers burnt her mind into flames.

The muddy hiking boots that she had found in Dylan's closet. They were buried under a jacket. Buried, or hidden?

The top drawer of the dresser that Bo told her not to open because her underwear was inside. Did it just have her underwear inside, or did it have something else?

That earring. That damn earring that Dylan had in his hand. It was staring at her the entire time. Did she lose it by accident, or not?

Sometimes the simplest answer might actually be the real answer.

She swallowed hard as she reached for the top drawer of the dresser. She fumbled through the underwear inside it, until she felt something cold.

A knife.

She held it up. Her head was spinning. She found a strand of pale fiber caught between the serrated part of the knife. It looked familiar. It looked like the fiber from Dylan's rope.

Under the garment pieces, she found an earring. It was the other earring from the pair, the ones that Bo had told her that she had lost.

Now, one of them was in her jacket pocket, while the other was in her hand. It stared back at her jokingly.

Tamsin shivered hard. She quickly buried those things back underneath, as if she could make them go away.

What if.

She wondered, as her mind betrayed her. What if.

What if Bo did kill Dylan, but forgot about it? What if...she remembered everything but thought it was a dream of hers?

She heard someone approaching. She spun around and faltered.

It was Bo. She stood by the door and frowned. "Tamsin? I...I heard something and...why did you come here? Is something wrong?"

Tamsin took a deep breath. "Bo...did you...have you ever dreamed of a dark place with-with many eyes?"

She heard her own voice, dry, rigid. Words were tossed out one after another like stones.

Bo opened her mouth. It took her awhile before she said, "how do you know?"

"Oh...you might have...umm...muttered something in your sleep, so…."

Bo nodded as she gripped the edge of the door. "What's wrong?"

"Ummm...when did you have this dream?"

"I don't remember...I mean, I guess every now and then for the past few days."

"Since Dylan's disappearance?"

Bo pondered, and eventually gave her a nod.

Tamsin licked her lips quickly. She had to move her eyes away from Bo, as she feared that her gaze would betray her.

"What else...what else have you seen in your dream?"

Bo looked away. Her fingers dug into the edge of the door. "I think...I sometimes saw Dylan," she admitted. "He was...he was there with me. There was a blue eye in his hand."

Tamsin's heart dropped. That earring she had found at the scene. She hid it and did not tell anyone. No one should know about it.

"A blue eye?" She barely squeezed those words out.

"A blue eye," Bo confirmed. "It was watching me...it was watching me the whole time."
