As me and Edward ran back home I quickly told him what had just happened between me and Jane. I could tell that he didn't like it, of course he wouldn't. I would be the same, if the roles were reversed. He was also thankful that I had been able to defend myself against Jane; however I couldn't take full credit for this - Jasper, Emmett and Edward were very good teachers since my transformation.
As me and Edward continued to make our way back to our family thinking about my fighting lessons then brought a realisation to the forefront of my mind. I guessed we were preparing ourselves for this very situation; and the fact that it was finally here was setting me on edge. I just hoped that it wasn't about to come to anyone's demise.
When the Cullen residence came into view I started to panic; I didn't know what I was about to find but I knew it wasn't good. I could tell as I could hear panicked breathing coming from Jacob as the rest of our family was standing nearby. I pushed myself forward; as I pursed my lips together. Part of me didn't want to see my beautiful little girl in pain; but I knew I had to be there for her. She needed me, needed Edward and we were going to be there for her.
Me and Edward quickly ran through the house, following the noises of Jacob's whines and Carlisle's words of reassurance; and when we ran into the side room next to his office we both froze in shock and panic at the scene before us.
Renesmee was lying sound asleep on a hospital bed, with a light pink hospital blanket tucked under her arms and over her chest - but this wasn't what concerned me. What concerned me was the long scar that ran from the top of her forehead on the top of her left eye, and ran along diagonally slightly so the wound stopped just above the right hand side of her lip. Thankfully I hadn't seen how bad it had been; as it was now quickly stitched together very smartly and cleanly.
"I have put her into a coma-" Carlisle explained as me and Edward walked around to the left hand side of her bed, as Jacob was sat on the right with his head down to the floor as he held her right hand. "Nothing that you need to worry about" he added as he stepped back so we could get closer to her. "It is just so she can heal" I heard him add. "It was quite a wound" I heard him finish sadly.
"Yes" I heard Edward agree.
"How long will she be out for?" I muttered, not taking my eyes from her.
"A few days" I heard Carlisle answer, causing me to look up at him. "I had to do a lot of stitches inside" he advised.
"For god sake!" I exclaimed.
"Bella calm down" Edward said as he wrapped his right arm around my shoulders.
"Calm down!" I snapped back as I shrugged out of his arms, and I saw his face drop at them. "I couldn't protect her!" I pressed as I stepped away from Edward and quickly kicked a chair that was near me. However I must have used too much force; as when I fell into shock, just like my family, as the chair flew backwards and against a nearby wall.
"Whoa!" my family exclaimed.
"Bella tell us what happened?" Alice questioned.
"Me, Nessie, and Jake went for a walk-" I began. "And Jane attacked Nessie" I announced.
"What?" our family chorused in a mix of shock and panic.
"Yes" I nodded.
"Why would she do that?" Emmett questioned.
"Jane wasn't going for her" Jacob answered for me. "She went for me and Ness got in the way" he said as he slowly looked up and looked over to Renesmee. "I couldn't protect her, I should have been able to" he stated sadly as his face dropped in disappointment.
"Jake this isn't on you" I urged. "I couldn't stop Jane either" I reminded him. "She threw me down a verge" I stated and I couldn't help but grimace as the memory of me fighting with Jane flew to the fore front of my mind. "Away from them" I told out family as I looked over to our family. "So as I was climbing back up I could hear noises which told me that she was using her powers against them" I continued sadly. "As I got back over the cliff verge I saw her strike Nessie as she tried to get near Jake" I finished.
"Whoa!" Emmett and Jasper exclaimed.
"What happened after that?" Alice insisted.
"Me and Jane started fighting again-" I started. "I got her away from them, chased her right out of Forks. With her the whole time taunting me, I was about to follow her off the border" I continued. "But Edward stopped me" I added. "Darn you" I teased as I threw him a playful look.
"Hey!" he chuckled as he stepped closer to me and he wrapped his arms around me. "You know I am the fastest runner" he smiled as he pulled me tightly to him.
"Yeah" I stated as I meekly up at my husband. "You nearly didn't catch me though" I reminded him.
"Well-" he began. "You had quite the head start" he stated.
"True" I agreed. "What happened after I left Jake?" I questioned as I looked over to Jacob.
"I changed back and carefully carried Nessie here" he explained. "However-" he continued. "As soon as I got closer to the house Edward must have read my mind as he quickly ran out of the house and came looking for you" he added.
"I see" I noted.
"When I carried Nessie into the house Carlisle told me to bring her in here; and he quickly worked on her" he answered as his face dropped in pain.
"Jacob she will be ok" I urged, hoping to not just reassure him but also myself and Edward.
"I know" he returned. "It just hurts to see her like this, she looks so weak" he sighed sadly as he squeezed her hand lightly.
"Not Renesmee" Edward interjected. "She's a tough cookie, like her mother" I heard him say which caused me to look up at him. We shared a brief loving look before I snuggled back into his chest, very happy to be in his arms.
"Like her father" I stated as I looked back up at him; I then watched as he pushed his face close to mine and he brushed his nose against mine before pressing a brief but loving kiss against my lips. I then snuggled back into his chest as my eyes landed on our daughter; and I fell into a wave of mixed emotions. I suddenly began to fill with anger, grief, sorry and wanting to get revenge on Jane. As I tried to push all of these away I couldn't help but notice how much turmoil this was causing throughout my body; however when my mind suddenly remembered Alice's vision about me I gasped, causing everyone to look over to me.
"What?" Esme asked for the room.
"We know who is behind this" I muttered as I looked over to her.
"Who?" she answered.
"Think about it-" I began. "This is against the wolves, combine that with Alice's vision" I added. "It's not a secret that Caius doesn't like wolves, he is behind this" I stated as I grimaced. "Not Aro" I finished.
"We don't know that" Jasper offered.
"I do" I disagreed. "If Caius was after a reaction it is going to be very hard to not to, this is enough for us to attack them back!" I insisted.
"Enough!" Carlisle exclaimed, causing us all to quickly look over to him. "We are not going to war with the Volturi!" he stressed. "That is reckless and dangerous" he urged. "To everyone involved, we need to do this the right way" he insisted. "Attacking them is not it" he finished sternly as he looked around the room at all of us.
The room then fell into silence as we all thought about what Carlisle had just said to us; and don't get me wrong. I did respect Carlisle and his peaceful way of thinking; and most times it was the best thing to so - I just didn't know how far this way of thinking was going to be pushed. As by the looks of it Jane, Caius and whoever was involved weren't afraid to rile us up and play dirty.
