Chapter 28
Halloween was fast approaching Auradon Prep, only a week before Fairy Godmother had announced that the students were to dress up for the day. Due to the short notice Evie could be heard muttering that a poison apple might soon be on the teachers' menu.
After the announcement, the six VK's decided to go as their parents - couldn't get much more Halloween villain than that. The previous year they'd just gone in their regular clothes not knowing what to expect and the fact that everyone assumed they were still evil, and to be fair they kinda were.
This year they felt far more confident, they're proclamation of goodness at Ben's coronation and that fact that Mal had defected her mother and gone up against Uma without a second thought had warmed the other students up to them.
This is what lead to Maleficent, Evil Queen, Jafar, Cruella De'Vil, Captain Hook and Gaston walking into the dining hall for breakfast. They were accompanied by LeFou, Lady Tremaine and Shan Yu. When Ben, Jane and Lonnie had heard what the others were up to they'd wanted to join in - Doug however had already agreed on a joint zombie theme with the marching band so wasn't taking part with the others.
A hush fell across the dining room as the present villains entered the room. Evie had done an excellent job with the costumes, and had even made Dude a little Dalmatian costume to wear for the day to help Carlos feel a little less foolish for being dressed up as his mother.
What really gave it away that the villains hadn't devised a way of the Isle was that Captain Hook kept shamelessly flirting with Maleficent, even going as far as kissing the Mistress of Evil. Hopefully someone would get a picture before the end of the day.
Part of their plan had been to pull off some 'legacy' moments as they'd named them, to remind everyone of how their parents earned their status.
Instead of their usual table the group decided to pick the table at the centre of the dining hall, all part of their plan.
About halfway through breakfast Gil started acting all moody, with Ben placing a comforting hand on his shoulder before he burst into song.
"Gosh, it disturbs me to see you Gaston, Looking so down in the dumps"
It wasn't long before most of the room had joined in with Gaston's infamous song.
Laughter and applause filled the room once they'd finished, it had been entertaining to see the King pretending to be Gaston's not so intelligent friend. Ben was silently praying that either his parents wouldn't see anything related to this or understand it in the good humour it was intended.
Being seniors they'd been able to plan more of their 'legacy' moments to be during classes. With Jane's help Harry knew exactly what class Jane Darling would be in and with the best impression of his father's swagger and mannerisms he stormed into the English class room and pretended to kidnap her. While doing this he treated the rest of them as though were the lost boys and threw all his father's Peter Pan insults at the teacher. Jane took it well and gave the pirate a high five when he let go of her outside. Harry just laughed and walked off while whistling 'It's a Pirates Life for Me'.
When lunch arrived, the students found a gleaming basket of apples on every table, with a little old lady with an overlarge nose walking round the hall with a final basket. The blue hair roots were the giveaway that it was just Evie.
The strange bit was seeing Lady Tremaine sit down at a keyboard that had been set up in the corner. No one could remember anything involving a piano in Cinderella's story. However, as none of the VK's could play the instrument (or any instrument!) and Jane had mentioned that she could she was volunteered for this element.
The opening bars of the song about Cruella De'Vil that Roger had written was coming from the piano as the doors burst open and Carlos literally strutted in, still unable to walk in the stupid heels Evie had forced him to wear. It also turned out Carlos wasn't the best singer but did manage to impersonate his mother in an entertaining manner.
Carlos's performance was the first time the rest of them had properly broken character and descended into laughter. This caused some of their classmates to realise that a laughing Maleficent was far more terrifying than one that flirted with a pirate.
Compared to the morning, the afternoon was fairly uneventful. A party had been planned for the evening which was where the final two 'legacies' would be happening. This party was being chaperoned by staff, unlike the tourney one, so would be much more civilised.
Jafar was lording over the drinks table, designed to look like a stall in the Agrabha market place with all the drinks being served in lantern shaped cups. Jay had never been keen on his father's story and so opted for this to be his contribution - plus it meant he was in charge of the limited alcohol the pirates had snuck in.
About halfway through the party Audrey was up on the stage prattling away about the activities at the party. There was pumpkin carving and apple bobbing amongst some other things.
"And finally, don't forget they annual Halloween dance off will be starting shortly" the Princess said with a beaming smile, clearly hoping to take the title herself.
At that moment, the doors to the room slammed open and in walked Maleficent, complete with her sceptre and a stuffed raven on her shoulder. Carlos had helped Mal out with the sceptre by putting some green LED's at the top to make it look as though it was radiating off power.
Imitating her mother almost with perfection she walked right up to Audrey and said in her most menacing voice, "Well, quite a glittering assemblage, Princess Audrey. I really felt quite distressed of not receiving an invitation."
Unfortunately Audrey, who was not anticipating this interruption, just about threw a hissy fit in front of the school. However, Fairy Godmothers magic lessons were about to come in handy, and as Mal had only been told she couldn't use magic for bad she took the chance.
Audrey was getting on her nerves, so still pretending to be her mother she shouted "Stand back you fool" before creating a thick green smoke around her, and using the recently learned transformation spell to turn her clothes back to her Isle wear and ran over to the rest of her friends while the smoke was still too thick for Audrey to see what was going on.
Evie gave her friend a high five for pulling it off and showing the prissy princess up at the same time. By this point the smoke had cleared enough for the girl in question to see that 'Maleficent' had disappeared and began to look round the room wildly to try and find where she'd gone.
"Fairy Godmother, how is that girl allowed to do such evil magic!" Audrey huffed, clearly wound up as she marched towards the headmistress who thankfully had seen everything. "She should be expelled for what she's just done, and the rest of them for what they've done."
"Well dear, I've had no other complaints about the groups actions today." the headmistress began. "In fact, I believe their costumes and ideas were well done, and completely harmless. Mal, come over here will you?" she asked the younger fairy who was still with her friends celebrating the performance.
Audrey was smiling now, hoping the other girl would get in trouble for use of magic.
"Mal, very impressive use of the smoke diversion spell and excellent transfiguration spell" she praised the young girl. "Actually that was only the cancellation, my mother's clothes was the transfiguration spell all day" she shrugged as though it was no big deal, but clearly Fairy Godmother had been impressed.
"Audrey dear, you need to learn to accept things with a bit better faith." the headmistress said to the princess, knowing that she often dished out this style of behaviour but could not handle it herself.
"But, but, she used magic! That's outlawed!" she stammered, still angling for getting the other girl in trouble.
"It's not outlawed, just not commonly practise. Magic for good or without evil intent is allowed. Anyway, I've got some villains to party with" and with that Mal walked back to the group, receiving a lantern drink from Harry.
"Audrey it may be best if you were to return to your dorm room for the remainder of the evening" was Fairy Godmother's parting words to the girl. At this the brunette princess spun on her heel and stormed out the room, a few of the other cheerleaders following behind her to provide support.
Following the abrupt departure there was a brief moment of silence before the party got back underway. None of the VK's entered the dance contest, although Jay and Carlos still dressed as their parents did partake in an entertaining slow dance when the music was appropriate.
At the end of the evening Fairy Godmother took to the stage to hand out the small prizes for the various competitions that had happened during the evening.
"Finally the competition for best costume! Bibbity-Bobbity the efforts this year have been so good we couldn't actually pick one student. Mal, Evie, Jay, Carlos, Harry, Gil, Ben, Jane and Lonnie if you'd all like to come up onto the stage."
The group made their way up with applause breaking through the crowd, on the walk up Mal recast the spell and transformed back into her mother.
The group were instructed to pose for two pictures, one of them smiling and another doing their best villain face - both would be appearing in the monthly newsletter all the parents received.
Their prize for winning was just a small, plastic cauldron filled with some candy - not much for Ben, Jane and Lonnie. However for the other six it was a huge achievement to see the work they'd put in was genuinely appreciated and they were one step closer to being accepted by everyone.
After the party it was just the four original VK's left, it wasn't long before Evie spoke up after placing her hands on Mal's shoulders, "Mal we love you, and as your friends please never imitate your mother again - it was terrifying" this just caused the purple haired girl to laugh.
"I never want to be her again - what we pulled off was pretty epic though" she said looking at her three closest friends. "Also my Dad, Captain Hook and Gaston will get a good laugh out of the pictures!"
Carlos gave his friend a confused look, "how come your Dad gets the newsletter?"
"FG emails it to him. No doubt Gaston will find it hilarious to see Ben dressed up as LeFou" she replied, laughing at the display they had put on at breakfast.
When they reached the top of the stairs they split up and big goodnight to each other with Carlos happily returning the deathly shoes to Evie before heading to their rooms.
