Chapter 11: A New Chapter Begins
Angel Grove Community Hospital, Angel Grove
August 12, 1996
1 pm
Kim was packing her overnight bag with all of hers and Luca's things as Tommy was holding Luca, waiting for the nurse to discharge them from the hospital.
The nurse came in then, carrying a bag of formula and diapers and a car seat.
"Okay, you two ready to leave us?" The nurse, Joni, asked.
"We're more than ready," Kim said, zipping up her bag.
"Okay, here are your discharge instructions, the appointment for the pediatrician for next Monday is on this page, the copy of the birth certificate is after that, and I brought you a car seat, formula, and diapers as a parting gift, courtesy of the teen parent program here," Joni said putting the car seat, formula, and diapers on the bed.
"Thank you, we'll put these items to good use," Tommy said as he handed the baby to Kim who went to put him in the car seat.
"I just need signatures from both of you on my copy," Joni said as Tommy, then Kim, signed the papers.
"You're free to go! Good luck with everything!" Joni said as she left the room.
"Thank you!" Kim and Tommy said as Kim grabbed the car seat and Tommy took the bag and the bag of formula and diapers. They then left the hospital to start their new journey together.
Rainbow Manor Home for Teenage Mothers, Stone Canyon
2 pm
Tommy pulled up to the house and parked his truck. Kim got out as Ann and Angie went to meet them.
Tommy went over to the rear passenger door, opened it, and got out Luca's car seat and carried it to the house.
"Oh, he is so cute!" Angie said as Ann agreed.
They all went inside the house and sat down at the dining room table.
Tommy took Luca out of the car seat and handed him to Ann. She sat down rocking him in her arms.
"Okay, I'm glad everything went well with the delivery, but now we have some things to discuss," Angie said.
"We're listening," Kim said.
"Typically, after a mother here has her baby she's given three days to move out of the house, then when a townhouse at one of our properties opens up, we let them know and then there's usually a two week wait to move into that townhouse. Right now we had two young mothers decide to move out of two of our units at our Glencrest property in Angel Grove, which accepts clients from Rainbow Manor. We have two more properties that serve our other two homes. They have moved out at the end of last month so in 1 ½ weeks the units will be available. Since there's just you and Kristi left here, Kim, you two get first dibs on the units. Does that sound good to you and Tommy?" Angie asked.
"Sounds good to us," Kim said as Tommy nodded.
"Good. Rent is based on a sliding fee scale since we don't do credit checks and I have the amount of rent you need to pay on the paperwork. Now, Tommy's parents told you they're covering your room and board here, correct?" Angie asked.
"Yes they told us yesterday. They said we can pay them back once we get settled into a routine with Luca and our jobs."
"Good. Now if you both could read the paperwork through and sign where I have it highlighted, and we'll make payment arrangements with the security deposit and first month's rent and you don't have to worry about paying until next month."
Tommy and Kim read through the paperwork and signed where it was highlighted.
"Okay, we're all set! Ann has already set up a bassinet and another bed in your room for Tommy so you two can stay here until the day you move out, and by next week Tuesday you can move into the townhome."
"Sounds like a plan," Kim said as she and Tommy got up from the table along with Angie and Ann. Kim went to take Luca from Ann and headed upstairs with Tommy.
Kim opened the door to her bedroom and saw that there was a bassinet next to her bed along with another bed for Tommy. There was a changing table in one corner of the room.
"Will all three of us fit in here?" Tommy asked.
"I'm sure we'll make it work. It's only three days. We'll be fine," Kim said as she laid Luca in the bassinet and started to unpack hers and Luca's things. Tommy unpacked the bag his mother had brought him while they were in the hospital.
Once they finished unpacking they sat on their beds watching Luca sleep.
"I love it when he dreams in his sleep," Kim said.
"Yeah, he must be dreaming about something good," Tommy said.
"He's probably dreaming about his next meal," Kim said.
Just then there was a knock at the door.
"Yes?" Kim asked.
"Kim, you have visitors," Ann said.
"Visitors?" Kim asked, then a lightbulb went off in her head.
"Oh oh…" Tommy started to say.
Then the door opened, and Jason and Trini walked in, not too pleased with Tommy and Kim.
"Kimberly Ann Hart! You have some explaining to do!" Trini said.
"Trini, shhh! He's sleeping!" Kim pleaded with her.
"Look, let's take this outside in the back. We don't want to fight with you two in front of our son," Tommy said.
"Fine," Trini said as she and Jason followed Tommy and Kim downstairs and out the back.
Once they all were seated at the picnic table, Kim started to speak.
"This shouldn't be a surprise to you two. I left three messages with your residence hall in Switzerland and wrote you twice while I was pregnant, so you should've known," Kim said.
"What messages?" Trini asked puzzled.
"I left three messages with Katrina at your residence hall and mailed two letters to there. Don't tell me you didn't get them."
"Oh, you left them with Katrina, yeah she got let go for stealing just recently plus she's very unorganized and absent minded and forgets very easily."
"If you didn't get my messages and letters then how do you know about me?"
"Aisha. She thought you didn't tell us because you didn't want us to judge you."
"You only left me the number for the residence hall you were staying at and that you said you didn't have any phones in your rooms so how else could I have got ahold of you?"
"You're right, Kim, I'm sorry for jumping on you and Tommy. And I'm sorry for missing those messages and letters. You must really hate me right now," Trini said.
"Trini, I could never hate you. You're practically my sister and you and Jason are the only family I have left. My parents want nothing to do with me so me and Tommy only have his parents left," Kim said.
"I'm sorry about your parents," Trini said.
"It's okay. I'll manage without them," Kim said.
Kim and Trini hugged.
"Let's go upstairs. I want to meet that cute little boy of yours," Trini said as she and Kim went back into the house. Tommy went after them, but Jason stopped him.
"Not you. You and I have some things to discuss," Jason said frowning. Tommy gulped.
Jason walked back and forth then stopped in front of Tommy.
"First of all, I want to say that your son and his mother are the only things stopping me from killing you right now," Jason said clenching his fists.
"Jason, I can explain…" Tommy started to say when Jason cut him off.
"You knocked my little sister up, so you don't get to explain anything!"
"But…"
"But nothing! You and Kim were always careful! What happened this time? Did you forget to put one on?!"
"The condom broke. Only I felt it break. I told Kim and she said that we'd be okay because she was on the pill. But the pill is only 97% effective so there's still a 3% chance that it could fail."
"So it failed?"
"The doctor said it likely did."
"97% effective. Really?"
"Yes."
"Okay, I believe you. But I still must punch you in the face," Jason said as he raised his fist as Tommy braced himself.
"Jason Lee Scott! Don't you dare even think about it!" Kim screamed at him from her bedroom window.
"Oh, Kim! It's not what it looks like!" Jason said.
"Oh, I know you were going to punch Tommy. I could see it out my window!"
"But…he knocked you up! You're my little sister and he was being careless with you! Don't you care?"
"It takes two to make a baby Jason! At least he told me that the condom broke and I was the one who told him not to worry about it because I was on the pill. So we both made huge mistakes. But at least we're facing the consequences of our actions and not dumping our baby in a dumpster somewhere!"
"Do you love him, even after what happened?"
"Of course I do! He's going to be a great father to Luca, and who knows what'll happen with us, only time will tell."
"If you're okay with all this, than I am too. Tommy, I'm sorry for losing my cool bro," Jason said.
"That's okay, man. You're just being protective of Kim and I'm okay with that," Tommy said shaking Jason's hand.
"Let's go inside. I want to meet your son," Jason said as he and Tommy went inside.
When they got to the room, Trini was rocking the baby.
"Look who woke up from his nap!" Trini said.
Trini handed the baby to Kim. Then he started to fuss.
"Okay, you and Tommy need to get out. I have to feed him," Kim said to Jason.
"Oh I'm fine," Jason said.
"Okay, suit yourself," Kim said as she undid her blouse and popped open her nursing bra.
Jason saw her doing that and ran for the door. Trini and Tommy laughed, along with Kim.
"I'll go see how he's doing," Tommy said leaving the room and closing the door.
Once he got outside he saw Jason shaking his head and rubbing his eyes.
Tommy just laughed.
"I am never going to be the same again. What was she doing?" Jason asked.
"It's called breastfeeding. It's good for the baby. Makes him smart," Tommy said.
"Oh really?"
"Really. Did your mom ever breastfeed you?"
"No, I was bottle fed because she didn't have the time. When did this become about my mom?"
"Okay I'm sorry I went there. We'll just stay downstairs until Trini gets us."
"Okay but she better be decent when we get back up there," Jason said.
"Oh I'm sure she will be," Tommy said laughing.
A half an hour later Trini came down and told them that Kim was finished feeding the baby. Tommy and Jason went back upstairs. Kim was burping the baby.
After the baby burped, Kim held him out to Jason.
"You want to hold him?" Kim asked Jason.
Jason nodded as Kim put the baby in his arms.
Jason relaxed as he held Luca. The baby stared at him with his big brown eyes.
"Hey, Luca, I'm your Uncle Jason. I'm going to teach you all I know," Jason said softly.
Luca grabbed at Jason's finger and held onto it.
Jason smiled as he let the baby hold onto his finger.
A few hours later Jason and Trini left, and Kim and Tommy got ready for supper. After supper they relaxed a little before it was time for bed.
As like clockwork, Luca woke up every two hours. It was 1 in the morning when he woke up to be fed. Kim fed him. Tommy was still asleep while she was feeding Luca.
Then around 2:30 in the morning Luca woke up crying. Tommy woke up, went over to the bassinet, and picked him up. He checked Luca's diaper. It was wet and soiled.
"I know the feeling little guy," Tommy said to his son as he laid him on the changing table, unsnapped his onesie, opened the soiled diaper, and got a big whiff of it. Tommy turned his head the other way, trying not to gag. It was the first soiled diaper he changed, and he was trying his best to hold it together.
Tommy took a couple of wipes out of the package, and quickly wiped the baby front to back, getting all the nooks and crannies where poop would hide. Then he grabbed a diaper, removed the soiled diaper, and replaced it with the clean one, and secured the tape tabs. He buttoned the onesie back up, picked up Luca, and rocked him back to sleep.
Kim woke up then and wrapped her arms around his waist.
"You didn't have to get up, beautiful," Tommy said.
"I couldn't miss this beautiful moment between you and Luca. Watching you two is like falling in love with you all over again," Kim said.
"Thank you, beautiful. There, he's asleep," Tommy said as he laid the baby in the bassinet.
"I love you, handsome," Kim said.
"I love you too, beautiful," Tommy said giving her a kiss as they went back to their beds, laid down, and went to sleep.
