Hey guys! I hope you all enjoy this chapter-there's lots of drama and fighting here-and also I love my babies-you'll all see what I mean. I just think certain characters deserve so much better so I am getting involved thank you very much.
Percy knew afterwards that she'd look back on the run in with Polyphemus and shudder every time.
She'd never forget the noise that the boulder that acted as his door made when he threw it at the wall-the bone rattling crack and crash.
She had to force down the wave of terror that threatened to rush over her as she padded through the cave towards Grover, pressing a finger to her
lips to tell him to be silent.
Thankfully a moment later she head Annabeth's voice again "Your aim's just as bad as it used to be!" and Percy had never been so glad to hear her friends voice-for just a moment she'd thought the worst, thought that the boulder had hit her, that her best friend was dead, but no. No Annabeth was alive, that was good, even as Polyphemus let out another rage filled roar and threw something else.
"Come here! Let me kill you, Nobody!"
"You can't kill Nobody, you stupid oaf," she taunted. "Come find me!"
Polyphemus barreled down the hill toward her voice, and Percy reached Grover quickly, grabbing his hand and dragging her best friend out of the cave, her heart pounding in her chest as she did.
She was lucky that Grover had been in the main cave-if Polyphemus had been brighter he'd have kept the Satyr trapped somewhere in the deep corridors, but he didn't suspect anything, and that meant that Grover could wander relatively freely.
Neither of them spoke as they burst out of the entrance.
The Cyclops was still chasing after Annabeth, even as she called out, taunting him loudly.
"What do we do?" Grover bleated, tugging the veil away.
"We run." Percy said quickly, "We have a boat-the Poseidon's Joy. Luke's getting the Fleece-" she faltered, "Hopefully anyway, Annabeth said she'd
get away from Polyphemus after luring him far enough from the cave that we could get out."
"How do we get off the island without him stopping us?"
"We need to get across the bridge, we figure out the rest once we're across."
"Right." Grover nodded, and together they ran.
They made it maybe half way before there was a scream.
Percy felt her blood running cold at the noise and she whirled around as terror flooded through her.
Polyphemus was stood a short distance away, his hand in the air in a fist shape-and he was shaking something with a proud roar.
"I have caught Nobody!" and Percy wanted to scream as the shaking knocked Annabeth's hat off and her friend became visible, kicking and punching helplessly in the Cyclops' grip.
"Run." Percy managed to gasp out, "Get across the bridge-"
"But Percy-"
"I said run!" and Percy was sprinting back towards the Cyclops, letting out a blood curdling scream as she went, uncapping Riptide-which she'd been keeping tucked into the hair still piled on top of her head. "Hey!" she saw the Cyclops' head snapping towards her, his eye widening in surprise, and Annabeth let out a panicked cry.
"No!"
"Hey! Hey dumbo, you've caught the wrong Nobody." okay, so it wasn't as witty as Annabeth's insults but it worked.
As far as she was concerned her best bet was to confuse him, and his expression was suddenly very confused. "The wrong Nobody-"
"What are you? Stupid? I'm the one who was insulting you!" she ducked and rolled, avoiding the fist that threatened to smash into her. She forced herself to ignore Annabeth's terrified scream as she sprinted behind the Cyclops.
She remembered her lessons-the knees were usually a good spot to aim, so she twisted as she got behind the Cyclops, even as he twisted to try and follow her, lashing out with her blade, grimacing at the scream Polyphemus let out, filled with pain as he staggered forward.
She'd done this before, she'd wounded Ares like this almost a year ago.
She gritted her teeth, rushing forward through the Cyclops' legs as his grip on Annabeth loosened.
She would have hit the ground hard if Percy hadn't thrown herself beneath her, arms flung out, catching the other girl, though the force and weight of the other girls fall bore Percy to the ground, her arms wrenching painfully as she staggered and hit the ground on her knees.
Then Polyphemus was lashing out, his hand catching them both and batting them hard.
Percy was still clinging to Annabeth, twisting them both as she was sent crashing into the cliff-pain ripping through her back at the impact.
"Nobody won't get away this time!"
"Percy-" Annabeth's voice was shaking and pained, "Percy are you okay?"
"I'm fine-" she groaned the words as she turned her head towards the bridge-and Grover and Luke were both on the other side of it, Luke, who had the fleece draped over his shoulders.
"We need to get away." but Polyphemus was advancing on them, a gleeful look on his face. "Nobody's going to die, he picked up a boulder, and Percy grabbed onto Annabeth tightly, "You go one way I go the other. Get to the bridge and get across." then she was releasing her friend and they were bolting in opposite directions as the boulder Polyphemus had picked up crashed into the cliff in the spot they'd just been.
Both girls ran around.
Annabeth was the lucky one. He was angry that Percy had injured him, so he'd chosen her to target when they split.
She screamed and ducked, just avoiding decapitation via boulder as he threw another one and pounded towards her.
She could hear Luke, Annabeth and Grover screaming, and she braced herself to be caught, to be killed when Polyphemus let out a pained yell and her head snapped to the side to look at him.
He had a hand pressed to his bleeding face, a boulder on the ground next to him, and he was looking a short distance away, back towards the cave
Percy's eyes widened in shock and awe when she focused.
Tyson and Nico.
Tyson and Nico were there.
Nico was pale and swaying, and Tyson stood looking defiant as he roared, "No one hurts my big sister!" then Tyson was rushing at Polyphemus and
Percy doubled back to race towards Nico. "Nico! Tyson! How?"
"Me." Nico stumbled towards her, speeding up as he went and meeting her half way, almost toppling into her open arms. "I kept having dreams and I knew you needed me and Tyson." he managed, "So... So I Iris messaged dad and he told me I should be able to travel through Shadows if I focus
real hard and I did it." he looked exhausted as he clung to her. "I kept picturing you."
"You're a real hero." Percy gasped out, swinging the ten year old onto her back-and it was a sign of his exhaustion that he didn't even bother to protest as his arms wrapped around her neck tightly and she took off towards the bridge, ignoring her own pain as she glanced back towards Tyson, who was throwing more boulders at their older half brother, who was bellowing at the younger Cyclops for his betrayal.
They reached the bridge and Percy staggered across it, nearly falling more than once, but Luke half caught her as she reached the edge, pulling Nico from her back, the boy letting out a muffled protest, but Percy ignored it, whirling around, "Tyson! Tyson run!" and Tyson nodded and threw one last boulder before which knocked Polyphemus off his feet before taking off, sprinting towards them, bounding across the bridge, and Percy and Annabeth moved automatically, in perfect sync as they both dove forward, slashing at the ropes that held the bridge, slicing through them and sending the bridge falling, clattering down into the ravine even as Polyphemus screamed his rage, grabbing more boulders to throw.
"Run!" Percy screamed the word, and then they were moving.
That was where they were presented with the next problem-and really there was just no shortage of problems on this quest were there?
The problem was, of course, the killer sheep.
Fortunately they figured out an answer to that question very quickly when Tyson-who was that bit ahead of them, was surrounded by them, and Annabeth gasped out.
"Of course! He's a Cyclops-they associate Cyclops' with food-"
"Ty! Tyson can you lead them away from us?" Percy gasped out quickly, "Then meet us on the beach?"
"Of course." Tyson nodded quickly, "I will lead the big sheep away." and he did, calling for them and leading the sheep away from them.
That left them free to sprint away, dodging the thrown boulders as they raced down the path that lead to the beach, where the Poseidon's joy was waiting for them.
"We have to swim to it." Percy ordered quickly as they rushed across the sand, "Luke, give me Nico, I'm the best swimmer and you have the Fleece."
"I'm not a package!" Nico yelped, but he didn't protest any further when Percy hauled him onto her back again as they waded into the water, Percy using her powers to speed them along.
They'd reached the boat and everyone was climbing up the steps on the side.
First Grover and Annabeth, then Luke, carrying the soaked Fleece over his shoulders still.
Then Percy shifted Nico, boosting him up onto the steps as Luke grabbed the son of Hades' arm and hauled him onto the boat.
Percy hauled herself onto the steps, turning to look-and her eyes widened, a horrified look crossing her face when she saw Tyson sprinting across the beach towards them, because behind him was Polyphemus.
The Cyclops had somehow gotten across.
She let out a scream as she saw him tossing a boulder at Tyson's back, ignoring the others panicked cries as she dove back into the water, making a wave to push her back onto the beach with her half brothers just as Tyson staggered, clearly hurt.
"Don't hurt him!" she screamed the words as she launched herself at the Cyclops, blade flashing in a deadly arch towards his knees as he ducked under his fists.
Then she and Tyson were fighting together-which they'd never technically done before, but surprisingly enough Percy found that they worked really well when they were fighting, Tyson covered Percy's back when he was back on his feet, blocking the boulders that were flung their way, shattering them with his fists as Percy ducked and dodged and wove, almost dancing to the rhythm of the fight, slicing the back of the Cyclops knee again before retreating.
The problem was the size, it was always tricky fighting an opponent Polyphemus' size, and even with Tyson by her side it wasn't any easier.
But then she had an idea and she whirled around, sprinting back towards the surf-and she could see the others on the boat, see that they were leaning over the railings watching, clearly not happy about the situation.
But Percy didn't care, spinning around as she summoned another wave- a huge one that lifted her up and up and up.
She could hear Tyson's proud cry as she shifted her grip on Riptide and surged closer.
Then the wave hit Polyphemus and he went flying backwards and Percy thrust her blade forward and back, lightning fast, straight into his eye before
she leapt backwards as he screamed in pain.
"Not again!"
"Tyson run!"the wave receded and Percy landed on the sand with a thud even as a strong arm wrapped around her waist and she was being hauled bodily backwards towards the water by Tyson as Polyphemus screamed and tried to get to his feet, but the two younger children of Poseidon were already in the water and Percy controlled the currents, pushing themselves towards the Poseidon's Joy.
As soon as they reached the edge of the boat hands were reaching over the railings, Luke and Grover grabbing at Tyson as Annabeth grabbed Percy's arm and hauled her onboard.
Then the boat was moving pulling away from the island as Polyphemus' screams of pain and rage filled the air around them.
Once Percy was steady she twisted to look back towards the island.
She could see Polyphemus on the beach. He was on his feet, head turning this way and that-clearly trying to locate them-but even from this distance she could see that his eye was bloody from where she'd stabbed him.
"He can't see us." Annabeth breathed out, "He can't see us so he can't aim at us."
"We're gonna make it away." Luke's laugh was breathless, "We did it. We got the Golden Fleece. Now all we have to do is get home.
