Not Human
A blonde female with glasses on ran out of the building, onto the street, after an African American man and hit him on the back on the head, stopping him to the amusement of passersby.
"Felicity!" The man complained as he rubbed the back of his head. "What was that for?"
"For putting us in a no-win position," Felicity said. "James, how the hell could you promise them Kayla Kent?"
"Cause, I know her agent," James said, and Felicity paused, tilting her head. "She's been the trump card I've been holding onto. Her agent is my ex."
"That better have been one hell of a good break up," Felicity remarked.
"I'll call her now," James said, rolling his eyes and taking out his cellphone, putting it on speaker so Felicity could hear.
It took a while before Lucy Lane answered the phone.
"James Olsen," Lucy said. "Been a while. What do I owe the pleasure?"
"Hey Luce," James said with a smile that caused Felicity to roll her eyes now. "I need a favor."
"A favor?" Lucy asked.
"I need Kayla Kent," James said.
"For what?" Lucy asked and James bit his lip. He had kind of just expected an okay.
"Me and my partner, Felicity Smoak, are producers on the new Harry Potter animated TV series and I need Kayla to voice Hermione," James explained, and was surprised when he heard laughing – laughing that clearly did not amuse Felicity who put a hand on her hip.
"Nice joke James," Lucy said. "So, what do you really need her for?"
"That was it," James said. "I kind of promised I could get her. Without her, the entire project could be scrapped."
"James," Lucy sighed, and James could hear from her voice it wasn't good news. "I can't promise you she'll take this and I can't force her to. Nowadays, with how popular Kayla is, especially her Disney Princess status, I just pass along her choices and I can tell you I have at least 15 offers she would take before becoming a main in a TV show that's a 7-year contract. She has issues with TV shows."
"The part isn't that demanding," James responded quickly. "It's voice work only. She can record from home too. Please Luce. This is my job we're talking about. If this doesn't go through, I am done. I can't bounce back from being the guy who couldn't get Harry Potter into production."
"Send the information to me," Lucy sighed. "I'll see what I can do, but I can't promise you anything."
"Thanks, Luce," James said as the two said their goodbyes and he turned to look at Felicity. "Don't worry."
"Oh, I'm worried," Felicity said walking away to her car. "Our jobs are on the line, Olsen!"
"Yeah, I know," James groaned, going to his car now. He had to send Lucy all the information about the part.
-Beautiful-
"So, what happened again?" Caitlin asked as she took an ice pack out of the freezer and gave it to Sara, who put her on her shoulder.
"Got injured covering for this one here," Sara said, jokingly pushing Kayla with her foot.
"Not my fault the equipment malfunctioned," Kayla pointed out, with a laugh. Sara was once again stunt doubling for Kayla; it had gotten out they were a package deal if Kayla needed a stunt double. Wicked had been filming for months now and Kayla was having a lot of fun on set. She had also done her episodes of Star Trek. It had been nice to be teamed up with Barry again. "The thing they are using to do the bubble Glinda travels in broke."
"Guess it's better it happened on Sara and not you," Caitlin said.
"She wouldn't have gotten hurt," Sara pointed out.
"Which would have exposed her," Caitlin countered, and Sara laughed.
"True," Sara said, having to agree with that. "And this one has given me worst injuries. Those belong to you now though," Caitlin gave a laugh at that, getting what Sara meant.
"Happy to take them," Caitlin said with a smile.
"Hey Kayla, you got a visitor," it was Daphne coming in with Ruby and Marley, having had gone to pick the girls up from school for Caitlin that day. Lucy was following behind.
"Lucy?" Kayla asked, surprised as Lucy joined the group in the living room. Ruby jumped onto Kayla's lap to listen into the adult conversation while Marley went to go do her homework to the side in area that they set up for study time. "What do we owe this surprise to?"
"Well, it's past the time you usually decide on your next project," Lucy started. "And I had some time so figured I would hand deliver your choices to you. These are the ones where all you have to do is say yes." Lucy hand put down a rather large yellow folder in front of Kayla. "These are ones that want a reading or a chemistry test with a co-star first." The folder put down was slightly less big, but still pretty impressive.
"Luce, you usually send some intern with these," Kayla pointed out, surprised.
"There were a couple of things I wanted to discuss with you personally," Lucy explained, and Kayla raised an eyebrow. "First off, there are some scripts that have your character gay, but the story is not all about your character being gay. It's just one aspect of the character."
"That's… um… interesting," Caitlin said, putting a hand behind her head and seeming nervous – something her sister gave her an eye at.
"The next thing is this," Lucy said, holding up another folder. "You have been offered a rather interesting part..." Kayla waited for more. "It's doing the voice of Hermione Granger on the Harry Potter animated TV series."
"What?" Kayla asked, confused. "You know me well enough to say no to something like this."
"Here's some concept art," Lucy perused, not letting Kayla words stop her as she took a page out of the folder. "It's based on the Harry Potter movies; the characters looks there. The series would be a truer telling of the books."
"Shouldn't Emma Watson be doing this?" Kayla asked, seeming not impressed of the drawing of Hermione that looked exactly like Emma Watson as a kid.
"She said no," Lucy said. "She doesn't want to return to Harry Potter."
"So, I am a second choice?" Kayla asked.
"Actually third," Lucy stated, and Kayla raised an eyebrow. "Billie Piper said no too."
"Who?" Kayla asked.
"British actress played Rose Tyler in Doctor Who for the first two seasons of the new series," Daphne added in.
"And in the spin off on Pete's World," Sara said, making eyes turn to her. "What? I liked the spin off. Would have loved to be Billie's stunt double on that, but it's filmed in the UK so no go for me."
"Yeah, sorry, I'm out," Kayla said, tossing the pages down on the table nearby.
"Hold on a second Kayla," Lucy said, surprising the actress. "Just think about it for a moment. Harry Potter is something special. A whole new generation of Potter fans could know you as Hermione. Give one good reason not to do it."
"I don't do TV shows. I don't do voice work. And it wouldn't even be my face. It would be Emma Watson's face. She'll always be Hermione," Kayla said, ticking these off on her fingers. "And…"
"I said one," Lucy said, cutting Kayla off. "The schedule isn't that demanding. All the voice work each season will be done within a month. You can do this and still continue to do other projects. You can work from home too if it suits you."
"But voice work?" Kayla asked, confused on Lucy insisting. "In a British accent."
"Everyone knows you can do a perfect British accent," Lucy shot back.
"Yeah how do you do a perfect British accent?" Daphne asked.
"Same way I do an American accent," Kayla said, and then saw the confused faces. "You do all remember English is not my first language, right? It's not even my second language."
"It is sometimes forgettable," Caitlin said with a nod.
"Lucy, what is up with you?" Kayla asked, ignoring the comment from Caitlin. "You have never been this insistent with me about taking a part. Hell, when I said I didn't want to continue on Magical Creatures, and we had no idea if I could survive in the acting world by leaving that show you said let's find you another part. You got me on Glee. Now I have any acting opportunity I want and you want me to take voice work in Harry Potter?"
"It's Harry Potter, Kayla," Lucy said. "We grew up on Harry Potter. It's special. Don't you remember when going to the theaters and seeing the movies? Waiting for the next book to come out and grabbing it when it did to read for hours."
Kayla paused looking at Lucy before she sighed.
"Seriously? Is everyone forgetting I am not human?" Kayla asked. "I wasn't raised on Harry Potter. It's not special to me."
"Well Caitlin knows it," Lucy said, turning to Caitlin.
"I'm not getting involved in this," Caitlin said, raising her hands.
"Is the peanut gallery closed?" Lucy asked, turning to Sara and Daphne at that.
"I think we should be offended," Daphne said and Sara laughed at that. "I like Harry Potter as much as the next person, but I'm not getting involved with Kayla's career choices."
"And if she did voice work I can't stunt for her and I like being her stunt double the best," Sara said. "We get into all types of mischief." Sara playfully pushed Kayla who chuckled at that. Ruby gave a smile too from her place on Kayla's lap.
"I'd like Kayla to be Hermione," the voice surprised everyone who turned to see Marley had stopped her homework and had been reading their lips, obviously sensing the tension to stop to eavesdrop. Krypto and Roxy had come wondering in and jumped onto the couch, making the girl laugh at that moment as everyone looked at her.
"That's my girl," Lucy said happy to get some help.
"Why?" Kayla asked and signed to the girl. "You're deaf. You can't hear my voice. The show would be the same for you without me in it."
"But it would be cool to tell people I know Hermione Granger," Marley said.
"Know," Ruby said, butting in. "She's our step mom."
"Will be," Lucy said and then noticed the faces. "What? Wait… You two didn't…?"
"New Year's Eve," Kayla smirked. "We went to the fortress; Uncle Jor got registered so he could perform the ceremony. We did a traditional Kryptonian binding ceremony with some tweaks to add in human's tradition. Clark welcomed Caitlin into the House of El."
"Honestly, Krypton has a beautiful tradition," Caitlin said. "And so much easier. But we registered everything so the marriage is legal. I think people have not realized due to the last name Lang."
"We have bets going on how long before people realize," Daphne said. "I already lost. I gave it a month until February, but it's March."
"You eloped," Lucy grinned, seeming stunned and ignoring Daphne comments. "Magazines have been calling wanting the exclusive rights to take pictures. Your wedding could have been the biggest same-sex event since Ellen and Portia de Rossi's wedding." Kayla and Caitlin gave each other a look. "And you don't care? Ah well, I'll have to figure out a way to clean this up for the public, maybe adding being able to share your voicing Hermione into the mix."
"Okay, Lucy I am not buying this Harry-Potter-is-special thing," Kayla said, picking up Ruby and taking her off her lap before standing up. "Give me the real reason, please."
Lucy sighed.
"Okay, you remember my ex-boyfriend?" Lucy asked.
"Which one?" Kayla and Sara asked together.
"Oh, don't tell me it's the stalker," Sara said. "I thought Kayla and me got rid of him."
"No," Lucy said. "But I do deserve that." Lucy didn't have the best of luck with men in the past. Kayla and Sara had seen a lot of it. "James Olsen."
"Not much better," Kayla said, making Lucy frown.
"He's the one producing the Harry Potter show," Lucy said.
"Another reason to not to do it," Kayla pointed out and Lucy sighed.
"What was your problem with James?" Lucy asked.
"He hit on me," Kayla said, making Lucy blinked. "Well actually he hit on Kara thinking Kara was me. While he was dating you."
"Okay, he was a bit of a player," Lucy reasoned. "But that's in the past and he's in serious trouble with this. It was hard for two Americans to get the rights to make a Harry Potter TV series, but the trouble they are having getting voice actors has put it in jeopardy. From my understanding if you say no the entire thing will be pulled." Marley made an upset noise. "Please think about it."
"Fine. I'll think about it," Kayla said, but didn't seem swayed as Lucy gave a nod, knowing it was the best she would get.
-Beautiful-
Later that night Kayla came out of the bathroom into her room in her pajamas. Krypto and Roxy were snuggled up on Krypto's bed and Caitlin was sitting there reading a book.
"Hey, you know we didn't do a honeymoon," Kayla said, getting on the bed and leaning closer to Caitlin. "After Wicked is done filming, what if I take you for two weeks on some Caribbean Island?"
"Sounds great," Caitlin said, putting the book down as Kayla went to kiss her. "Kayla…" Caitlin interrupted, stopping the kiss. "Would you consider doing the voice of Hermione for Marley?"
"What?" Kayla asked blinking.
"She would be so excited," Caitlin said.
"There are no sets to bring her to. No costumes or props to show her. It's literally nothing," Kayla said, confused over why Marley would be excited if she did a voice over she could not even hear.
"She loves Harry Potter," Caitlin said. "If the show doesn't go she would be so disappointed. So, would a lot of people."
"Do you even know what Hermione's first line in this thing is?" Kayla asked, having looked over what Lucy had given her including some written scripts.
"'Has anyone seen a toad? A boy named Neville lost one'," Caitlin quoted, and Kayla blinked.
"How do you know that?" Kayla asked.
"Have you ever seen the first movie? Or read the book?" Caitlin asked, blinking and knew by Kayla's face it was a no. "Seriously? You have watched Disney movies, but not Harry Potter?"
"Saw some of the later ones," Kayla shrugged.
"But wait, one time when someone asked you what house you would be in, you said Gryffindor," Caitlin said remembering the interview from a long time ago.
"I can name the house Harry Potter was in," Kayla pointed out, and Caitlin laughed.
"Please," Caitlin said and kissed Kayla's cheek.
"I said I would think about it," Kayla commented. "And I will consider Marley's feelings as I consider it, but it's a seven-season commitment. I can't base this decision completely on Marley."
"Then," Caitlin said, picking up the book she was reading. "Read the books." Kayla noticed the book was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
"I thought the first book was the Philosopher's Stone?" Kayla frowned at the cover.
"Seriously? You know the British title but not the book itself?!" Caitlin asked, shocked.
"From the same interview I mentioned Gryffindor," Kayla shrugged. "A British talk show or magazine."
"Oh. Well, you can see perfectly in the dark, right?" Caitlin asked.
"Yeah but…." Kayla didn't finish the sentence before Caitlin turned off the lights.
Kara, any chance you read the Harry Potter books and mind-sharing the words with me? Kayla asked Kara through their bond.
No short cuts, Kara thought back with a laugh and Kayla rolled her eyes and decided to read the book.
-Beautiful-
"Do you know the Harry Potter books?" Kara asked Barry. They were both in bed, Kara having just denied Kayla request.
"Know them? I have them memorized," Barry looked to her happily. "Why? Want me to read them to Topar?"
"He knows them, already. Well, the first three. Maybe you could read to him book 4 onwards later on," Kara mused, "but no. Kayla's been offered the role of Hermione in a new animated retelling."
"Seriously?!" Barry asked. "I thought they would look for a British actress."
"Kayla does a good British accent," Kara pointed out.
"True… so can I…" Barry mused.
"Who would you play?" Kara raised her eyebrow at this.
"I never considered it," Barry shrugged. "But go Kayla."
"She doesn't really want to do it, but Marley, Caitlin and Lucy are blackmailing her to do it," Kara chuckled.
"She would be an idiot for turning it down," Barry pointed out.
"You do know I share a mental bond with her right?" Kara added. "She just heard you."
"Oh. Well, if the Flash stops showing up, we'll know Supergirl killed him," Barry mused, knowing Kayla wouldn't care he called her an idiot just now.
"We'll see," Kara mused as she got out of bed to the bookcase, taking out her own copy of the Sorcerer's Stone. Ever since spying on their conversation, Kara had wanted to reread the book. Getting back in bed, she started to read, Barry looking over her shoulder at the first words of the page:
Mr and Mrs Dursley, of number four Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. They were the last people you'd expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn't hold with such nonsense…
