Chapter 15
.
Sydney and Dewey went to the hospital to question Amy. The doctors said she would be okay, and could answer some questions.
.
Amy: Hey Syd, I heard you saved my life, again.
Sydney: Me and sheriff Riley here.
Amy: Thank you, both of you.
Dewey: You're welcome. If you're up to it, we'd like to ask you a few questions.
Amy: Yeah, go ahead.
Dewey: What do you remember about last night?
Amy: I was walking home, when this police car pulled up next to me. It was Amanda's father, he said I shouldn't be walking alone so close to sunset, offered to give me a ride. I figured, why not, a police officer is supposed to be my friend. But then he started asking me some questions, which made me uncomfortable. He apologized, offered me a soda. All of a sudden I started feeling sleepy, next thing I know I'm in the hospital.
Dewey: Unfortunately the doctors say you were drugged with Ruthenol, the date rape drug.
Amy: You're saying they raped me?
Sydney: No, we got there just in time. Hanson, the one who drugged you, he's dead. His partner, Johnny, is under arrest and will spend the rest of his life in prison. Ex-cops don't do well in prison. The only question is whether he gets the death penalty.
Amy: So they were the ones who stalked Mary, killed Amanda?
Dewey: It's unlikely. Ironically the killer probably saved your life by leading us to the barn.
Amy: A serial killer who saves people, like Dexter Morgan?
Sydney: That might be how they see themselves. Doesn't explain why they want me dead.
Amy: I read about how you're part of that pro-death penalty group. Maybe a friend of someone executed blames you.
Sydney: I guess it's possible. I spoke with your friend Christina, she says the killer tests their victims.
Amy: With a horror quiz?
Sydney: No, with a moral test. Asks them to put themselves, or a loved one, in danger. Mary put herself in danger, the killer spared her. Most likely Amanda failed this test, got killed for it.
Amy: I don't remember any such test.
Dewey: This might sound like a stupid question, are either of your parents cops?
Amy: My mother's in the army, currently serving in Afghanistan. I never met my father, mom says he was a bad guy, out of the picture long before I was born. I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
Dewey: You've helped plenty. I'm more interested in something else. If you're father is out of the picture, and you're mother is on another continent, where are you staying?
Amy: My mother rented a house here before she was deployed. She feels I'm old enough to handle things on my own.
Dewey: I'm sorry, but I have to call Child Protective Services.
Amy: That's not neccessary.
Dewey: After all of this, it absolutely is.
