It was safe to say that Derek was getting his ass handed to him by the alpha. After watching this man fight, it was clear that he was not the best fighter when it came to battling literally any other werewolf. Aubrey didn't know if it was just because Peter was an alpha – which seemed to give him more strength– or if it was because Derek never learned how to fight properly. However, she could not mule over it right now anyway. She had taken cover on the other side of the main desk, looking for anything she could use as a make shift weapon. Nothing present seemed to be helpful though, just tons of patient books and manuals.
"C'mon, c'mon," she muttered to herself as she scanned all the surrounding shelves, but she had no luck. Instead, Aubrey decided to move locations as Derek kept Peter busy by being the punching bag. Although even that fighting came to a lull as the alpha started to monologue his tragic backstory of why he was now like this.
She moved to behind the desk that was enclosed by glass, it also led to back rooms that had other beds and medical supply. But she did not have a chance to look for anything helpful before glass shards rained down from above her. She barely had enough time to cover her face and neck as the body of Derek Hale flew through the air and came to a halt in front of her. Aubrey gave him an incredulous look, but it was in vain because he wasn't even looking at her, he was looking for the alpha whom was on the other side of the glass.
"You need to go," he whispered to her before trying to crawl away to a back portion of the room they were currently in.
"So, you can get your ass beat even more," she hissed right back, moving closer to help him to his feet. He fought her on the action, however, and crawled further away from where they once were.
"No, so you can go warn Scott."
She shook her head, but had no time to respond as she was hauled to her feet by someone else. "I would listen to my nephew, sweetheart. This is not your fight right now," Peter whispered in her ear, tightening his grip on her upper arm before throwing her to the side. Aubrey slammed into one of the walls, not as hard as she expected but it still hurt. When she pulled her head up to face him, he gave her a malicious smirk – eyes flashing that familiar red color. "I've got other plans to deal with you at a later date. Now run along."
Her breathing hitched and she couldn't seem to form a reply before the alpha walked on after Derek, whom had now disappeared from the room. She was left gaping at his vacancy with more questions than her brain could hold at the moment. It took a minute until her breathing returned to normal as she pulled herself onto her knees – still watching the doorframe in case either wolf decided to return. However, the small movement made her back ache. I guess that hit was more forceful than I thought, she thought to herself, it's definitely going to be bruised.
Aubrey shrugged her shoulders to try and get a feel for how bad it was, but luckily it only shot light pains. Now on to the next task at hand: getting to the lacrosse game. She rose to her feet and hastily moved back to the front entrance of this hospital wing. A quick check behind her back and scan of the area outside of the entrance proved that the werewolf pair had not left the building yet, or at least she hoped they hadn't.
She sprinted to her car, immediately starting the engine as soon as she slammed the door shut, and pulling out her phone shortly after. Thankfully it was still on her call history and all she had to do was hit the Stiles contact before she threw her car into gear and sped out of the parking lot.
"C'mon, c'mon. Pick up, pick up," Aubrey whispered to herself as the phone rang for the fourth time with no answer. Finally, another voice answered the other end of the phone as it rang for the sixth time.
"Hey-"
"Stiles, thank god! We have a huge prob-"
"This is Stiles and you missed me. Leave a message."
"No. Damnit Stiles," she shouted in frustration as her foot dug deeper into the gas pedal. "You better be kicking some ass out on that field or I swear."
Aubrey ended the call and threw the phone onto her passenger side before increasing her speed ever so slightly. The road seemingly never ending. She could feel her heart racing with a new found adrenaline and purpose to reach the two lacrosse players as soon as humanly possible. However, even as she sped down the road, she couldn't help but think about what Peter had said to her. What kind of plans could a psycho, alpha werewolf have for her – a literal nobody until she became friends with the new werewolf in town.
Maybe he wants to use her as leverage against Scott in the near future, but that doesn't add up either. She was hardly close to Scott – definitely no Allison or Stiles. Perhaps it had something to do with how her Aunt and Uncle knew about the supernatural. Peter certainly seemed like the type to have his nose in everyone else's business so he could later use sensitive information to his gain later down the line. After she tells the boys the news, they would definitely need to come up with a plan to get two steps in front of Peter. This man was dangerous and they need to come up with ideas before anything major happens.
The school parking lot finally came into view, and Aubrey only let up on the gas so she didn't roll her vehicle as she whipped into a space near the side doors of the building. Climbing out of the car with lightning fast speed allowed her to be at the doors in seconds. Might as well check the locker rooms before heading towards the field, better safe than sorry – she can't risk missing them.
Bursting through the doors, Aubrey was greeted by a few shirtless lacrosse players exiting the school via the doors she just entered. From their small numbers she guessed that this was the last group that left the locker rooms, which either meant Scott and Stiles left already or they were hanging back. Whichever way it was, she marched towards the locker room anyway. As soon as she opened the door, she was greeted by an eerily empty room. That is until she moved around a row of lockers and saw Scott slumped on a bench.
"Scott," she called to grab his attention, "We have a problem."
"I know," he sighed. "Peter was just here with Derek, I guess he decided to flip sides on us and join his uncle."
"That doesn't make sense. When I left them, Derek was getting the shit beat out of him by the big bad alpha."
"I guess Peter must have done something bad enough to make him switch sides."
"That could be extremely possible," a new voice chimed in from the other side of the second row of lockers. Stiles emerged from the other end of the room, adjusting his hoodie. "Sorry, I just saw the voicemail you left. I would have called back immediately if you hadn't shown up here."
He moved closer to Aubrey and almost went in for a hug before realizing that he was still gross from the game. She rolled her eyes and gave a small smile at the action. "I'm just glad you are both okay. What did Peter want?"
"He wanted to help me reach my potential. He showed me how his family died in that fire; how he was catatonic for years."
"Great," Stiles commented sarcastically, "I wonder what he has planned after he gets you to kill all of us."
Scott sighed again and put his face into his hands. "I don't want to find out." He glanced back up at his two friends and gave a small smirk, "So we're gonna stop him."
The woods were full of heavy mist that shrouded the trail as the three girls walked along, Allison leading the way. She wanted to make a quick stop before Lydia took them out shopping. For Aubrey it wasn't the weirdest place to be, but Lydia thought completely different – complaining the entire walk from the car.
"Can you at least tell us what you are doing," Lydia asked, almost stumbling over a root on the trail.
"You'll see," Allison responded whilst she shifted the bag she brought with her.
"It better be cool," Aubrey muttered as her eyes wandered through the trees, on the lookout for any unwanted company. She had been a little on edge since actually meeting the alpha that had tried to kill her and her friend's multiple times in the last few months. On top of that she now had to worry about getting caught when she snuck out to train with Kate Argent. She wanted to be sure that she could protect herself and those around her from the new threat to her life, and Kate was the only option. The only bad thing was that Aubrey was fairly certain that Kate was trying to get into her head – trying to brainwash her into believing that all werewolves were bad and highly dangerous. She would argue the thought to herself that they weren't all bad, but when she thought of Peter it became harder to believe those thoughts.
"Oh," Allison cut into Aubrey's train of thought. "Before I forget, I wanted to ask if you were okay with something, Lydia."
"I'll say yes to anything as long as it includes getting out of this forest."
"Jackson asked me to go to the winter formal with him," she answered shyly, avoiding any eye contact with their fiery friend. Aubrey steals a glance to gage her reaction, but Lydia held it together for the most part.
She blinked with an uncaring look appearing on her face, "Did he?"
"Just as friends. But I wanted to see if you were okay with it."
"Yeah, as long as it's just friends."
"Of course."
Aubrey could honestly cut the tension that just rose with a butter knife. Luckily it only lasted a few minutes before Allison dropped her bag on the ground. She made a comment about this being far enough into the woods before she unzipped it to reveal a bow and a quiver of arrows.
"Oh no," Aubrey grinned, "Did you bring us here to be your targets?"
"Not yet," Allison laughed as she unscrewed the bullet point of her arrow, replacing it with a foreign arrow head. Aubrey quirked her eyebrow up, tilting her head slightly to the side. Allison notched the arrow onto the bow string before pulling it taunt. She took her aim at a tree across the clearing before releasing it.
The arrow flew smoothly through the area before reaching the dead center of the tree, but as it made contact there was a blinding flash. All three girls ducked their heads away from the striking light. Only when the light dimmed did the girls straighten up.
"What the hell was that," Lydia spoke up first.
Allison lowered her bow in bewilderment, "I don't know."
"It must be something your dad uses while he hunts, right?" Aubrey questioned as Allison walked over to the tree to collect the charred remains of the lightning bolt arrow head. Her two friends followed her, Lydia almost reluctantly.
"Well that was fun," Lydia quipped. "Any more lethal weapons you want to try out?"
Before Allison could respond, a crack came from deeper within the forest. To Aubrey, it sounded like someone stepping on a branch and breaking it. She turned her gaze away from the woods and to her friends whom were both looking in the direction of the noise. It suddenly sounded again, which put everyone on edge. They were not alone in this forest.
Allison passed her bow off to Lydia with a simple command of 'hold this' before stepping in the direction that noise came from.
"What? Why?"
"Because I thought I heard something," Allison stated as if it was an obvious explanation for passing off the bow.
"I think we all heard it," Aubrey pitched in. "Doesn't necessarily mean we have to go check it out, right?"
"Fine. Both of you can stay here then. I'm going to go check it out."
"Allison," Aubrey tried, grabbing onto Allison's forearm gently. "Think this through. It probably was an animal or something. This is a forest after all, they do live here too."
"I don't think it was," Allison turned to look at Aubrey. "I know you don't think that either."
Allison shook Aubrey's hand free before wandering deeper into the woods. Aubrey stared after her, but made no move to trail after. Lydia still needed someone to stay with her because it was likely that she wouldn't know what to do if something other than a fluffy forest bunny came out of those woods – even with a bow in hand.
They stayed in silence for a few minutes, just watching Allison disappear. Before long they were packing up the bow to keep themselves busy whilst Allison inspected the area around them.
"What could be taking her so long," Lydia complained after a while of waiting.
"I don't know," Aubrey replied honestly, "Maybe she is just trying to clear her head. She did look a little bit frazzled and stressed."
"Hmm, I guess so."
"Speaking of being frazzled, how are you? I know it must be difficult with Allison going to the dance with Jackson."
"Drop it please, Aubrey. I really don't want to talk about Jackson right now, or for that matter ever."
Aubrey quirked her eyebrow at the girl, but dropped the topic allowing the silence of the woods to fill the air once more. Lydia was good at putting on a brave front, however it wasn't that hard for Aubrey to see how much this truly hurt her. From previous conversations they had, she could put the pieces together that this was Lydia's first serious relationship. Sure, the girl had had multiple flings with guys from the school, but Jackson was something different to her entirely. Clearly, he didn't feel the same way anymore if he was moving on so fast. That guy was quick at pulling a complete one eighty in his personality and emotions.
"Alright," Aubrey yielded, "I'll drop it, but you can come to me whenever you need. Okay?"
"Okay."
Aunt Gen has insisted on a family evening in order to destress from all of the hectic things going on in life at the moment. Or at least that is what she told Aubrey when she got home after the archery outing with the girls. Allison had eventually returned to the duo she left in the middle of the woods, not mentioning much about what happened while she was alone, but Lydia swore they would get it out of her one of these days. Aubrey doubted that but didn't argue with her, and neither did Allison.
Once Aubrey made it home, she was greeted by a home cooked meal and a movie queued on the television that faced the dinning area. Although Gen said it was family night, it would just be the two of the dining because her uncle was still at the station. It was a pleasant evening none the less, a girl's night. Aubrey shared a little information about her school life and her friends, but not so much detail that it would give anyone or anything away.
By the time their movie ended, Aubrey got a text from Stiles about an emergency with Scott and his mom. She snuck a peak at her aunt, who was cleaning up the mess around them, and shot a quick text back to meet her at the end of the driveway.
She stood up casually with a stretch, "Well I think I'm going to go to bed Gen. I'll see you in the morning. Love you."
"Alright sweetie, goodnight. Love you too."
And with that Aubrey was up the stairs and in her room within minutes. She stuffed some pillows under her sheets just in case either of her guardians decided to pop in for whatever reason. It was unlikely, but you never know. Once everything was in place, Aubrey made her way to her balcony and peered down her driveway. Stiles' iconic blue jeep was parked at the end. She carefully climbed over the railing and onto the actual roof before making her way down the side of the house using the overgrown vines that reached the top.
A foot off of the ground, Aubrey jumped onto the grass – making sure to check all the windows for any sign of her aunt. With no one in sight, she sprinted down the driveway and into the passenger's seat of the jeep.
Stiles took off immediately after she entered the vehicle. "Woah," Aubrey complained, "Where are we going in such a rush?"
"Peter, you know alpha werewolf Peter, took Scott's mom out on a date and we have to crash it," Stiles rambled as the car steady increased its speed.
"Well, that's not great," Aubrey commented, clicking her seatbelt into place. "So what's the plan?"
"About that I kind of don't have one at this very moment in time."
"Oh, good to know."
Aubrey let out a small chuckle before trying to think of something they could do to stop Peter from harming Scott's mom or anything else. As they drove passed a few other cars, a thought struck Aubrey.
"We could cause an accident."
"Like ram into them," Stiles reiterated, "That could work. It would get the out of the car and more focused on us."
Now they just needed to find their car. Scott had given Stiles a description of what the car looked like, and the restaurant they were likely headed too. So, they started that way and before long, Aubrey spotted Peter's car parked on the side of the road. Fortunately, so did Stiles because he slowed down enough to bump the car, but not cause severe damages to either vehicle.
Stiles parked the jeep while an angry Mrs. McCall out of the car and began to rant at both teens, mainly Stiles. Aubrey hopped out of the car and awkwardly stood by the side of the vehicle while Stiles was trying to convince her that it was a crazy coincidence. Mrs. McCall did not seem to buy it. However, their light argument soon faded as Aubrey became more focused on the alpha who was looking in the opposite direction of the accident. She thought it was very odd, considering she expected him to blow up at the two teens to try and scare them away. Yet he only seemed to notice them after he mumbled under his breath.
When his attention did come back to the trio, with Stiles and Mrs. McCall still bickering, he seemed almost startled to see Aubrey there alongside Stiles. While his glance lasted a millisecond, she noticed a flicker in his eye that she swears she's seen before, but just like the flashes of lightening over head it was gone in an instant.
"-We should probably call the cops." Aubrey heard Stiles exclaim. "You know fill out an accident report."
"I don't think that's necessary," Peter cut in curtly.
"Are you sure? Cause I think I'm feeling a little whiplash-"
"-Whiplash! You hit us," Mrs. McCall practically shouted in Stiles' ear.
Aubrey didn't bother getting in the middle of that mess of an argument and opted to put more of her attention on Peter once more. He seemed to be mumbling again which was odd, so she blamed that thought on what she was about to do. She wandered closer to him, catching the last few things he was saying.
"Like that one on the lacrosse team: Jackson. He knows all about us. You know how they say knowledge is power, not in his case."
"Are you saying that Jackson knows all about werewolves?"
Peter didn't even look fazed as he turned around to face you. "I thought I'd give Scott a little clue to what's going down tonight. You and your little boyfriend should move along if you know what's best for you."
Aubrey's heart sped up a tad, but she kept staring him down. "Like you're going to do anything in front of all these people. If you wanted to hurt me or Stiles, then you would have done so the minute after we hit your car."
"You should be careful who you talk back to."
"And you should be more careful choosing who to go up against because I have a feeling you picked the wrong group to mess with."
"Is that so?" Peter leaned in a little closer to her. "I guess we'll see about that Miss Douglas, and maybe you'll rethink who's side you want to be on."
