Cana had no clue what was going on. Had they called her mom to get her, did her mom come by her own will to come get her? What was going on?! Makarov could clearly see her confusion which just made him confused as well.
"You didn't know," he asked. "We could only assume that you or your group leader called her to come get you."
"No! What's going on? Take me to my mom."
They turned to lead her that way and Laxus went to follow but Makarov stopped him.
"Laxus, go tell her group leader what's going on."
Cana and Laxus shared a look. They both didn't want him to go, Cana was kind of nervous, but he didn't complain. Maybe Erza had called Cana's mom for some reason? Oh well. He turned and continued walking towards the dorms. He wasn't sure that's where Erza would be but it was a good place to start.
Cana watched him go and then followed Makarov and Porlyusica with a newfound determination. She was going to get to the bottom of this. And she knew one thing for sure. She was not leaving Fairy Tail.
Makarov and Porlyusica led her straight to the auditorium. It only made sense this was where she was. After all, Makarov's temporary office was here. How did she find this place? Of course she knew where Cana was but how did she know who to talk to? Did she stumble onto campus asking everyone she came across where her daughter was? And why didn't she tell Erza? Cana could only assume Erza didn't know because this wasn't something the well put together group leader would just forget to mention.
Porlyusica held the auditorium door open and Makarov led Cana inside. Her mother was sitting on one of the benches across the lobby, biting her nails. Oh, something was definitely up. Her mother only bit her nails when she was super anxious. And from the look of her left hand all torn up from biting, she had been a nervous wreck for a few days. What the actual hell was going on?!
"Mom?"
Cana's mom looked up and then practically shot out of her seat and ran to Cana.
"Come on, we're going home!"
"What why?!"
"Because I said so, now let's go!"
Her mom grabbed her hand and realized there was nothing in it.
"Where's your stuff?"
"I'm not leaving, mom," Cana told her calmly. Her mom looked taken aback and then she looked like she was about to snap Cana's neck.
"Yes. You are. You didn't want to come here anyway."
"And you did want me to come. So what in the world is up with you?"
"Ma'am," Makarov interrupted, "I can assure you that Cana is being treated well and being taught only the word of God. Our program is quite respectable and Cana seems to be enjoying herself."
"Listen, this is my daughter and I don't want her here anymore. I will not be told what to do by you!"
"Mom, calm down."
Cornelia looked ready to kill someone at this point. And if it wasn't Makarov, it was going to be Cana.
"Don't tell me to calm down! Cana I know what's best for you and the second you're out of this place, the better. You need to trust me sweetie!"
"And you need to trust me. I don't want to go."
"Well you're going and that's final."
"But I don't want to!"
"You're going whether you like it or not," her mom shouted. Cana was taken aback. Her mom never shouted like that. She was about to cry and her voice sounded desperate and course. "P-please, Cana. Just go get your stuff."
The door to the auditorium opened and Laxus came walking in with Erza behind him.
"Cornelia, what's wrong," Erza asked frantically, rushing to her crying friend. Laxus immediately went up to Cana.
"What's going on," Laxus whispered.
"I still have no clue," Cana muttered back, gripping his hand for reassurance. She didn't want to leave him yet.
"I am taking Cana home. I don't want her here anymore," Cornelia told Erza.
"Why not?"
Cornelia opened her mouth to say something or fire back another spiteful comment but the door opened again and this time, Gildarts walked in.
"Makarov, Laxus told me that Cana was leaving, what's going...on..."
Gildarts's eyes landed on Cornelia and he trailed off, his mouth dropped open and his eyes went wide.
"Cornelia?"
Cana's eyes moved to her mom. They were full of hatred and spite. She walked right up to him and stood in front of him. Gildarts looked shocked and surprised but also...happy?
Oh no. Cana could already see it coming and she flinched. Cornelia raised her hand and smacked Gildarts across the face as hard as she could. The man raised his hand to touch his face, looking hurt beyond all belief. Cana's mom turned back to Makarov.
"If this is the kind of person that you employ, I want my daughter as far away from this place as possible. My decision on the matter is final. Cana?"
She turned to Cana and the girl practically straightened up.
"I am your parent, you are still a child and you are coming home right now. Go get your things."
Cana opened her mouth to argue but her mother held up a hand to stop her.
"Cana, please, for once in your life, trust me and listen to what I say."
"We can't keep you here, Cana," Makarov said. "She is your mother and by keeping you here would be a direct violation of the law."
Cana felt herself getting so frustrated and ready to cry and yell and scream. She didn't care about what people thought about her. But then she saw her mom's eyes. They were so broken and so hurt. Cana had seen those eyes before. She had seen them in the mirror every time that she felt pathetic, worthless, and like the biggest fuck up in the world. She knew that feeling. She knew what that was like.
"I'll go get my stuff. C'mon Laxus."
Cana took him by the hand and led him out of the building. She turned around to watch her mom through the glass doors. Gildarts tried to say something to her again but instead she just ran into the women's restroom, followed by Erza and Porlyusica. Makarov said something to him and Gildarts went trudging into the auditorium. How did they know each other? Why did her mom hate him so much?
"Are you okay," Laxus asked, breaking their silence. Cana felt the lump forming in her throat as she tried not to cry.
"I don't know," she managed to choke out before the feelings overcame her and she started crying. She had so many emotions coursing through her blood at once. She was confused, frustrated, but most of all, she was sad that she had to leave. She stopped suddenly and wrapped her arms around Laxus's waist, crying into his chest.
"I don't want to go. I don't want to leave you yet. I- I want to finish with the rules. And I want to sleep with you some more. And I want to spend my days with you. I don't care if I have to listen to Makarov or whoever tell me about what's right or what's wrong. I don't care. I just want you!"
She sounded like a selfish, lovesick little brat. But she didn't care. There was no reason for her mom to take her away! Why? Because she hated Gildarts?! That had nothing to do with Cana!
Laxus wrapped his arms around Cana, squeezing her as tight as he could without hurting her. He had thought the same thing as he was going to find Erza. It was a mistake. They would get it sorted out and Cana would get to stay. She didn't have to leave. Even when he found Erza he had hope. Erza didn't know anything about it so it was just a misunderstanding. Up until the moment he walked through the auditorium door he had it set in his mind that he and Cana would be back in her dorm room bed talking about their past or their future with no worries in the world that night. He should have never let himself hope. He should have never expected anything more than this. She was going to leave him eventually. That was the whole point. This was going to happen anyway.
"We knew this was going to happen," Laxus told Cana, his own tears starting to form.
"Not like this," Cana mumbled. "Not this soon."
She pulled away from him and put her hands on the sides of his face. The gentle touch of her small hands did it for him and he couldn't stop himself from crying.
"We shouldn't be sad. We still have each other," Laxus muttered, placing his own hands on Cana's face.
"We have each other. We just won't be together. This is goodbye. And until when, we don't know."
"This is day eight," Cana joked dryly. "We've known each other eight days."
Laxus really let that sink in. Shit. Eight days.
"What are we doing," Cana suddenly exclaimed, pulling away from him. "We are so, so stupid to think this would actually work. It can't. There's no way!"
Laxus reached out and grabbed her face again.
"Cana look at me."
She did. Her eyes were red and filled with frustration and sadness.
"I am going to make this work," Laxus told her. His tears were falling down his face but now he was determined. "You are what is right for me. I know it. I'm not letting this fall apart. You say that you trust me, well trust me when I say this. I am not giving up on you. And something as dumb as distance or a number of days is not going to make me like you any less."
The joy that spread across Cana's face and eyes was all the proof he needed that she would do the same. She flung her arms around his shoulders and he grabbed her waist and lifted her off the ground. There was hope. And they were going to keep it that way.
Cana put the last bottle of alcohol in her backpack. She and Laxus were packing up everything she had brought. He held up the roller skates as if to ask if she wanted them or not.
"Keep them. I've got my own at home."
Cana went to the desk to grab her keys and phone. Her book of rules was lying there. It brought tears to her eyes again. Laxus walked up behind her and reached down to take it. He opened it and smiled sadly.
"Does your mom slapping Gildarts count as a fight?"
Cana chuckled sarcastically.
"Sure."
He grabbed a pen and crossed the rule off, handing the writing utensil back to Cana to put in her bag.
"That only leaves "fireworks" and "leaving Fairy Tail without a leader's permission". We almost had them all."
"Break them in my honor," Cana told him. She leaned up to kiss him. She needed it. She pulled away from him and swung her backpack over her shoulder.
She stepped out of the dorm to see all of her newfound friends waiting in the common room for her. She expected them to get onto her about having a boy in her room but instead they all looked sad.
"Bye, Cana," Wendy whimpered.
"Juvia will miss you."
"It was so nice to meet you."
"That water fight was fun, thanks for that!"
"What they said."
"Thanks guys," Cana said, about to cry again. They had formed a sort of aisle for her to walk down to get to the door.
"You ready," Laxus asked.
"As I'll ever be."
