Chapter 11: The Kankers.
"Come on you piece of crap! Connect!" Lee groaned. The redhead was at her laptop on the kitchen table while her husband and son were asleep in their respective rooms. It was late in the evening and Lee wanted to see if she by chance could contact her sisters. Thinking about Peach Creek left her feeling nostalgic and she felt that is was a good idea to try to reach out to her siblings, for old time's sake.
She had decided to contact Marie first and although the message went through, it was taking forever to load as if it was busy.
"Come on you hunk of junk!" Lee hissed. "Do I have to pawn you for beer again!?"
Suddenly, not only did Marie's face appear on the screen but so did May's.
"Hey!" All three sisters greeted in unison.
"What was the hold-up? I was trying to reach you Marie!" Lee began.
"I was trying to call May!" Marie retorted without skipping a beat.
"And I was trying to call you Lee!' May added.
The three sisters burst into laughter that shook their respective laughter.
"Hey! Shut the hell up!" Eddy roared half-asleep from the master bedroom. "I'm trying to sleep!"
"You shut up!" Lee snapped back before sighing. "I love that man!"
"So I guess you did wind up marrying Eddy huh?" May asked.
"Sure did!" We even had a kid together!"
"Get out!" Marie gasped. "Where is the little nugget!?"
"Asleep in his room." Lee answered. "Honestly that kid could sleep through an earthquake! You know, when he's not throwing crayons like goddamn ninja stars or swearing like a sailor at school."
"Mom always said girls were better." Marie beamed. "That's why I'm so proud of Marion!"
"You had a little girl?" May exclaimed. "With who?"
"I'll give you a hint." Marie purred. "He has two "D"s in his name."
"No." Lee and May gasped in unison. Marie simply nodded, blushing slightly as she did so.
"Well I'll be dammed." Lee chuckled. "Didn't think Double D had it in him. The egghead and the goth bitch. You two made such a weird couple in high school.
"Shut up!" Marie shouted, half playfully and half serious. She then noticed a forlorn look on May's face. "Hey May! What's wrong?'
"It's nothing." May replied, trying to force a smile.
"Come on May." Lee probed. "You know us better than that. What's wrong?"
May let out a heavy sigh. "Me and Big Ed have been trying to have a baby for a while now but nothing we do works."
"Big Ed!?" Marie and Lee shouted in unison. Lee composed herself and spoke again. "I'm sure it'll work out."
"Maybe it's my fault." May sniffed.
"Of course not! Marie shouted, slamming her fist on the table she was sitting at. "If anything, it's that idiot's fault for having lousy-"
"Marie!" Lee barked as she pointed to the saddened May.
Marie composed herself. "I'm sorry May. Just keep trying."
"Thanks guys." May mumbled. "That means a lot."
"Hey!" Lee said with a smile on her face. "Remember when we abducted Big Ed and tied him to a tree for yah?"
And thus began a long night of reminiscing about the good ol days at the Cul-de-sac. How they spent their summers tormenting the Eds and the rest of the neighborhood. How they once destroyed said neighborhood while looking for their missing ship in a bottle. How they once stripped the Eds naked in a haunted house ride and how the Ed once turned the tables on them if only temporally. They also recalled how things changed in high school. How their desire for boys to clean up after them slowly turned into real love and how, despite everything they did, the feeling became mutual.
"So." May finally asked. "What gave you the idea to call your sisters after all this time Lee?"
"Well it's the damnest thing." Lee replied as she held up the letter. "Some bozo from back then sent a letter saying he needed help or something. Eddy thinks it's the perfect opportunity for a scam but I think-"
Lee stopped talking when she noticed the concerned expressions on both Marie and May's faces.
"Girls? What's wrong?"
Maire and May looked at each other then back to Lee before holding up letters of their own.
Lee sat motionless for a few seconds. "WHAT THE FU-
(AN: In case you were wondering, Lee now wore her hair in a ponytail, allowing both of her eyes to be seen. The bangs that always cover one of Marie's eyes were still there but now were tipped black and May's blonde hair had grown a little past her shoulders.)
After a few more seconds, Lee continued. "Well this is creepy."
"Who do you think could have sent them?" May asked fearfully.
"I don't know but this is raising all sorts of red flags." Marie added.
"Should we cancel our trips to Peach Creek then?" May added.
"Hell no!" Lee shouted. Surprising both Marie and May.
"Lee."
"So some creep's trying to lure our men back to Peach Creek. Maybe it's one of the kids wanting revenge for the scams they pulled back then. Maybe it's one of our enemies trying to get back at us! All I know is we're the Kanker sisters and we're not about to be intimidated by a stinking letter."
Marie and May said nothing but grinned evilly. After all these years, they were still the Kanker sisters.
