Chapter 12: Phone calls

The whole room completely froze at the implications on the words Bella said through the phone.

Technically, she was talking only with Carlisle. But, there was never such a thing as privacy, in a room full of vampires.

I could hear her voice clearly from where i was standing. She was lost. Confused. Afraid.

I didn't need Jasper's powers to know that. I could hear it all in her voice.

Soon Bella's voice was replaced by Edward's. And his emotions could be heard too. Distraught. Despair.

Anger.

He was furious.

And i know him enough to know, that he was furious at himself.

Always the self loathing prick.

When the call is finished, the room keeps on silent for what feels like hours. Each one of us, as confused as the other.

How could that be possible?

"Is this for real?" Of course Emmett would be the first to break the silence. He can't never keep quiet for long.

"We will only be sure when they arrive." Is Carlisle's answer. Always the most sensible one.

My attention turns to Alice then. "You still can't see her future?"

Her face looks even more pale, if it's possible. "No. It's like radio static."

I could feel dread consuming everyone. The fear of what was to come was so strong that i was worried of the amount of terror Jasper must be feeling from all of us.

My feet carry me, quickly, out of the room, and soon i am out of the house entirely. We all needed some time alone to think, so i didn't try to fight the instinct, i just went along with it. I ran until i found a remote place in the woods.

How do we keep getting ourselves into this messes?

Is there really a possibility that Bella could...that she could be...

I feel Carlisle's presence getting close to me, and i send all my thoughts away while i wait for him.

The next seconds he appears behind me, both of his hands rise to caress my arms, and he pulls me closer until my back touch his chest.

"Are you alright?"

"I'm just...trying to understand." I said, confused.

"So am i."

I turn into his embrace, allowing him to fully hug me. It has been so long since i've been in his arms.

It felt amazing.

How could i resist him for so long?

Carlisle's satisfied purr reverberates on through our connected chests. I let myself feel his closeness, the warmth of his body. He is not cold to the touch anymore.

Because now we are the same.

"If Bella is coming home, i should go hunt."

He sighs loudly, then removes his arms from my body very slowly. "I'll be right behind you."

In a few hours it was morning.

Everyone in the Cullen household was doing something to distract themselves. All anxious, waiting for the time to go to Seattle to pick up Bella and Edward from the airport.

Alice was cleaning her immense wardrobe. Jasper went hunting with Emmett. Esme was gardening in the backyard. Carlisle studying non stop in his office. And Rosalie fixing her cars on the garage.

For some reason the garage was exactly where i was drawn to.

Rosalie has never been one to sweet talk so she went straight to business as soon as i got in. "You need something?" She asked. Still focused on the job she was doing on her car.

I wasn't expecting anything less from her. "Not particularly. I just felt the need to be here, for some reason."

She chuckles a bit. Tries to hide it too. But it's pointless i can see everything now. "Your little magic thing again?"

"Could be." I answer her question.

"How does that work exactly?" She asked. Her attention still fixed on the car.

"I wish i knew."

She laughs.

It's a rare moment. Rosalie usually doesn't let loose with just anyone.

I enjoy it.

Her phone rings. Suddenly, breaking the mood.

We both freeze, momentarily.

As if we could both feel the imminent threat.

Rosalie picks up on the third ring.

"Hello?"

"Rosalie?" Bella's voice went through the speaker, and my body was immediately on high alert. "It's Bella. Please. You need to help me."
