11. The Insides of the Box
Elliot remained silent as Murdock read through the file. It was the result of compiling all the details of the past months, even before Lemans murder. Translating it into braille had been the least of it. After an hour or so, Matt looked up. He seemed to have considered the facts and was still trying to puzzle everything.
"I remember this case from my first years and I read about the chimney incident. But that wasn't how it all started was it? You were already on this months before, when they killed the so-called Butcher of Yaxley with that Iron Lady made-up in a wall" Murdock had read the news. "They found out that he was related to the kidnappings, torturing and experimenting of Lemans CEO. It was quite a scandal in London"
"Yes, it was. When I heard Lemans was going to be at that party, we were already hot on his trail, knowing the murderers were after him" nodded Elliot while Foggy brought him some coffee.
"Alice's kidnapping was quite a bomb back in the day, but the real thing was going on in the streets. It was related to the issue, but nobody made the connection back then. The famous Pandora hoax" Matt went thoughtful.
"Nobody did because half the high tribunal was bought by the authors of that swindle. Miracle cures that were sold like gold to all, but only those who paid the highest bid would get functional medicines. Families ruined both financially and emotionally, protests and shock in hospitals. I was there but unable to act" there was remorse in Elliot's voice. "My team is currently in contact with Scotland Yard to find out more about the Butcher's murder, but what I'm afraid most is that the man behind all this wants more out of this"
"Uh, define more" Foggy blinked.
"A hunting ground" Elliot answered, making Nelson go pale. "I checked last night the records and there are more assassins in the area than we thought at first. Seems to me that our friend Big Bad has assembled all those who are interested in the reward for Pandora"
"How much is it?" Matthew spoke before his colleague.
"Ten million dollars for each member of Pandora you execute and five million for any of their clients, although there are some who do it for free" Delson knew the details well. "My coroner is researching the bodies of the docks again. We assumed that a giant saw had severed all the heads, but now we're not so sure"
"How come?" Murdock was way more calmed than Foggy.
"The cuts were different. Cleaner, if you know what I mean" the captain went silent. "We have a whole list of the assassins that have crossed the border, and one of them has a Japanese sword called Nodachi. Basically is a giant cleaver, can cut trucks half"
"Holy sh…" Nelson coughed.
"Its owner is an old friend of ours, doesn't have a clear side to be in. Hunting down the members of Pandora and their list of customers is just a game for him" Elliot put a file on the table. "Little Red is a valuable asset to them, but unstable. This guy, Memnon, on the other hand, has worked for all kinds of patrons and hates Pandora with all his dark heart"
"Not the most handsome that's for sure" Foggy noticed that the man's face, save for his dark hair and right eye, was covered in bandages. "And you say, he's not the only one"
"Big B has arranged a whole operation. We hardly know how big it is, but you can expect anything coming from him. Last night, there was a meeting between the mobster leaders and I'm not gonna lie. I fear the worst" Elliot was actually waiting for news. "I sent my boys this morning to the meeting point. We'll know what happened soon enough"
"I heard you were working with the spider" Matt was still indifferent about the topic.
"I am, and I'm worried sick about him. Not gonna lie. I tried keeping him in the dark for his own safety and it misfired. I'm gonna be honest with him, but I'm not sure if he will understand" confessed Delson.
"Give him a little faith, he's smart" Murdock smiled. "I told you I wanted nothing to do with this, but it was for a good reason. Hell's Kitchen is right now a wasp nest. In absence of the Kingpin, is hard to keep order with each band jumping to each other's throats. I assume you haven't found the big guy, am I right?"
"No such luck. We strongly believe that Osborne has something to do with it, but he sent us straight to his lawyers" scoffed Elliot before talking again. "I asked my contacts and apparently Fisk has been contacting several doctors in the country, all were cardiologists"
"Now there's something you don't see every day" joked Foggy, receiving not even a sneer.
"Where was the meeting?" asked Matt.
"Let me see. Uhmm. Ah, yes! Not far from here. Near Silver Towers, near the Clinton Tunnel" Elliot checked his tablet. "And I believe it's time to go see my boys there. If you want to come, you're welcome aboard"
"That we will. A good look won't hurt" Murdock's joke was by far better, much to Nelson's chagrin.
