If your recognize it, then I probably don't own it
Chapter 12
I was dreading walking into AP Chem, there was no way I could stay inside the classroom with—hell even sit next to—a vampire. But what choice did I have? It wasn't like I could hide in the bathroom or ditch and spend time with Re in Newspaper, or Mollie in History, Misty was in gym (and I was not doing that), Ashley F. was either in Child Development 2 or Home Ec or that was Ashley P. I could slum it with Nicky while she sucked up to Coach Clapp and did Health Aide stuff. But if I did that than Nicky would ignore her friends and try to hang out with me and mine. Jerome, Brody, and Pete (as was Pete 2, because he was best buddies with Jerome) were out because they would just hit on me. So I had no choice to walk into the classroom, with my head held high and my heart beating out of my chest.
She was sitting there, by the heater still as a statue. Not a hair out of place, a controlled chaos. The outside of the classroom was growing dark and dreary, an early September storm brew and I immediately regretted my clothes. Goose flesh dotted my legs and arms, as I anticipated the cold. The rest of the class filed through the door as I made my way to our black topped table. The air in here smelled like chemicals and dust from the heater. Alice moved her shoulders—breathing. I wondered briefly if I should call Paul and ask if he could pick me up…but I then my parents would get a phone call that I ditched. Ever since…Saffi…people have been over protective of me. If my mom didn't call to say I was sick or if some adult who knew my parents saw me around they stopped and checked on me. It wasn't like it was a secret, it was…Saffi and her impact. It was Forks, it was a place where you checked in on your neighbors. Even when Alice moved her shoulders and breathed, she was an outlier. The whole family was, they offered cookies and casseroles, but now I understood why they never accepted anything in return. They weren't super humble like they let on, they were vampires. Alice's extremely fancy designer clothes should have been the first indicator. That and the sports car. How they could afford it on the Doctor's salary was always a source of gossip.
"Casy," Alice looked up and smiled at me for the briefest moment then frowned. Her buttery gold eyes crinkled, "You're heart's beating very fast, are you okay? Has he done...something?"
"He?" I choked as I sat down, moving my seat away from the vampire. "He who?"
"Him…your…friend." She said with acid in her voice.
"Oh...Paul... yeah we're good." I swallowed…
"Oh." She said in a small voice. I saw her recoil slightly. The cashmere royal blue sweater she wore folded with her. Sher crossed her legs, the designer black jeans she wore made a scratchy sound as they rubbed against each other.
"You know." She said. No emotion in her voice. "I forgot you know. How silly of me."
She took a deep steadying breath, or was she smelling me?
"Yeah." I said and twisted my hands together. "So, uh, did you do the chem homework?"
"Yes." She said.
"Any chance I can copy? I haven't done it."
"No problem." She said and flipped open her binder and pulled out the packet. She slid it over to me. "Listen Casy, if you ever…if he ever does anything that makes you…uncomfortable. Call me and I'll come get you. No matter what time of day."
I nodded and copied her work; her handwriting was so neat and precise, like she spent more time on it then the actual homework.
The bell rang and Mrs. Holten cleared her throat. "Today, I'm returning your lab reports and you're going to rewrite them making the corrections I noted on your reports. Talking among your partner is allowed, anyone outside your partner is not.
"The majority of you did well, only one group did exceptional. If your preliminary grade is below a 70%, please be sure to read the attached note." She passed the Alice and my table and placed our lab report face down. "Remember: this is the only time I will be giving preliminary grades and allowing you to redo your lab reports."
I turned our lab report over and there was a 100% written in red pen. Excellent work! I turned to give a smile, but she was still, her eyes glassy.
"Three out of eight groups had a 90% or above on their reports, if they are satisfied then they can assist. They can also rework their own reports, study, or talk quietly among themselves. If you need help please raise your hand. The students available to help are: Alice, Casy, Michael, Joanna, Alexander, and Zeke."
Alice looked down at report and let out a deep exhale. She turned to me and moved her chair close.
"No one will hear me," She started, as the noise in the classroom rose as other students reworked their lab reports and other's helped. "I don't think he's safe for you, Casy."
"Excuse me?"
"Your wolf." She frowned, "He's not safe to be around. Especially when he gets angry."
"He's never been angry with me."
"He could really hurt you, the potential is always there," She said. "I don't think you should be around him for a while."
"I don't think it's any of your business."
"You're right, it's not." She agreed, "But I still think you should stay away from him. At least for a little while. Come to my house after school."
"And do what?"
"Whatever you want. Bella will be there, we can do makeovers, or homework, or anything else." She said.
"I know you think he'd hurt me. But he never would." I told Alice, "I appreciate what you're offering, but I don't really feel comfortable being away from him right now."
"Casy, listen to me. Honor your sister by staying alive, being around him will not keep you alive."
I saw red, I felt like I like all the air had been sucked out of me. How dare she talk about Saffi as if she knew what Saffi would want from me. How dare she bring up Saffi! I'd never walked out of a class before. But I rose to my feet, my chair teetered then clattered to the floor noisily, causing all the room to still. But by the time they registered that I was walking out, I had already slammed the door.
I pulled my phone out of my pocket and dialed his number.
It rang twice before he picked up.
"Miss me too much?" Paul asked, his voice smooth.
"Can you pick me up," I asked, leaving the building all together. "Please, I need you."
"I'll be there in two."
…
It was the urgency in her voice; the shakiness, the anger…the fear? I don't know. But as soon as she got out of the car, I knew I wasn't leaving the school zone. I stowed myself away, just down the street and played games on my phone.
I thought about maybe going somewhere, that she would be safe. But every time I put my car in gear, something uncomfortable fluttered in my stomach, and I would put my car back in park.
But when Casy called me, I knew I was right to have waited. If I had left and it had taken me longer that two minutes, someone could happen to her. Something I would be powerless to stop. I had gotten lucky in the cemetery; lucky that I couldn't stand being away from her for one more moment after she'd stopped talking to me and seeing me. At first I had thought she was embarrassed, or ashamed we'd slept together, but now knowing that she was grieving…it changed everything. I went four days without her, but each felt like an eternity. Sam had told me to be patient. But every fiber in my being had told me to find her. Whether it was the wolf or intuition, or some combination of both, I was glad I disobeyed Sam.
As soon as I rolled into the parking lot, from my hiding spot in across the street, I spotted a female figure walking across the parking lot. I drove slowly, even though I wanted to drive fast, and once she was one the sidewalk, I'd decided, I was going to speed to the edge of the campus where the last building was.
"Paul?" She called, seeing me through my car window.
"M—Mollie?" I asked rolling down my car window. It wasn't my car really, it was one Jake had built… all manual, stick shift from the 60's. It smelled like the clove and peppermint leather polish Jake bought cause it was cheap.
"Yes, oh good, I'm glad you remember me!" She grinned, her blonde ponytail bobbed as she nodded her head. She was dressed fancy for school. Heels, a fancy lacy blouse, and some high waisted shorts. Way too much for a day at a high school.
"Uh, yeah… listen, I'm looking for Casy." Leave me alone.
"Oh, no problem." She gave me a large smile, then she frowned, "Did you hear?"
"Hear what?" I asked wearily.
"About Casy, it's so sad. Her sister has been dead for, like, three years."
"Yeah, she told me."
"Oh!" Mollie blinked, "So you know she broke up with you, then?"
"What?" I asked.
"You don't know?" Her face fell. "She's my best friend, but she really needs to focus on her communication skills."
"What?" I asked agin.
Mollie looked up at me, her eyes sparkling…maybe that was because of her glittery eyeshadow. She blinked quickly, fluttering her eyelashes. A lifetime ago, I would have saved that look for the spank bank. But now, she was just irritating me. What did she mean that Casy broke up with me and I didn't realize?
"Casy always, I literally mean always, dumps guys for no reason. It happened last year with Tyler—she didn't like the movie he took her to and stopped talking to him. It happened with Pete One and Two, hated One's haircut, and didn't want to wear Two's letterman jacket to games. She's a total scammer. She hooked up with my boyfriend on Bonfire Night, which is not a big deal, because you know, it was Bonfire Night. But she still talks about her crush on him." Mollie spoke in a rush.
I frowned, "Casy doesn't seem the type."
"She doesn't seem like anything. She plays sweet really well, and after her sister died…Well everyone forgot that she can be kind of a monster." She let out a nervous chuckle.
"A monster?" I repeated, partially in awe of this girls blatant lies about her supposed best friend. I never enjoyed catty girls. Something about the underhanded manipulation of emotions never got me hard. Sam used to like it when girls fought, and I know Jared and Kim liked to make each other jealous as a game, but I was wired differently. If I was fucking around it was fine, if the girl I was fucking around with was fucking around with me, it was fine. There was always an understanding between me and those girls. Good for an orgasm, but never consider it more than that.
She nodded gravely, and bit at her pink lips. "I know it's hard to believe, but she collects people. It's like a game to her. She gets you to fall in love with her, and then she gets bored."
I frowned. "A game?" Never in a million years could I see Casy like that. She'd called herself glue, a people pleaser. When the group of us were at Java House, she kept getting interrupted, but she never got upset. And the way she talked was so sincere.
"I know. I'm sorry to be the one to tell you." Mollie pushed some invisible hair behind her. "I know I'm supposed to be in class, but I'm ditching history, there's a test I am not ready for. Why don't we go to Java House and talk?" She shrugged her shoulders innocently.
"I would, but Casy called me, I'm meeting her outside Building Seven." I said, as anger rose in my throat. "If you worried less on your dry pussy and more on being a better friend, maybe you'd realize you're the worst fuck I've ever had."
I rolled up my window and sped to Building Seven.
She was waiting out front; her eyes watery and her jaw set. Like she was determined not to cry. She kept rubbing her arms, like she was cold and I wished I had a jacket to give her.
As soon as I parked, she got into the car and slide next to me. I was lucky I was borrowing one of Jake's car's today, no middle console to keep her separate. She wrapped her arm around me, and I pulled her closer to me and wrapped my right arm around her.
"You're warm." She said softly.
"You look cold." I locked the car, and set the gear.
"I am cold." She said. "I'm sorry, if I pulled you out of class…I just didn't know who else to call."
"No it's okay," I told her as I shifted the gear. It was difficult with one hand, but not impossible. "I couldn't just let you walk into this place with someone after you. I was waiting in the bus parking lot across the street for you as soon as you were done for the day. I just didn't think it would be this early."
"Oh no!" She jolted up and moved for the door, "I completely forgot, I need to tell Re we can't take her home!"
I took her hand, and pulled her back to me. "I'll call Sam when we get to Emily's. He'll make sure she was a way home. You're the priority now."
She wrapped herself around me once more, and I put my arm around her again.
"Do you mind taking a detour at my house? I'd like to get some warmer clothes." She asked, her cheek rested against my chest. Each syllable she spoke was steady matching my heartbeat. "I didn't think about the rain."
I rubbed her arm, hoping some of my inhuman warmth and the friction was enough to keep her warm on the ride.
"No problem, I want panty raid you anyway." I kissed her forehead, as I turned out of the school and onto the main road.
…
SO SORRY I'M LATE! I pretty much had the outline, the Mollie's scam, and Paul's comeback written on my phone before it died! D: I was devastated! I'm actually almost done with the story in whole. I know it's a shorter chapter, but I want to make the next one a bit longer, which means leaving this kinda on a rest note. (Next chapter should be out by the end of the month). I just want to wish everyone a happy new year, and hopefully everyone is safe and healthy! If you haven't already checked it out, please check out Semper Fidelis and Non Lupus Emarcuit, my reimagined twilight series. Additionally I started a new JakexOC fic called: Someone to Watch over Me. Please let me know what you think of the chapter and how you want it to end!
