Data of a White Christmas 2
"Happy Christmas, I wrapped it up and send it, with a note saying I love You and I meant it.."
Christmas break is around the corner and the students cannot contain their excitement on the upcoming holiday. However, it all goes down the drain when their professor entered the classroom. "So the probability that all of you are excited for the Christmas break is 98.2%.", Yanagi Renji commented as he placed the text book on the table.
"You're no fun, sensei!", the students grumbled. They knew that Yanagi will surely give them tons of homework that will ruin their vacation.
Yanagi brushed off his students' complains and started his lecture. However, the students were only half-heartedly paying attention so he told them that if they passed the long quiz that he was about to give, there will be no homework for them. The students suddenly became eager to his lecture until he dropped the bomb by saying he was only kidding.
"S-E-N-S-E-I!", the students cried in protest while Yanagi smirked. "Why did you take this course in the first place when all you can do is to complain?" He is such a sadist who wanted to torture them.
Sometimes the students thought that maybe Yanagi held a grudge to them since they gate crashed their professor's wedding last summer. The data master wasn't able to see it coming so he was petrified when he saw his students at his wedding. Why does all his students, even from before, are too nosy about his love life? Well, he doesn't know and he doesn't want to know.
He returned to his newly acquired house after work and found a letter on the coffee table. It came from his wife who flew to South Korea for her cosmetics endorsement contract. Suzuki Hanami or Mia as Yanagi called her is actually a psychologist by profession and a part time cosmetics model. She is an epitome of beauty and brain.
Yanagi sighed as he refused to read his wife's letter. Two days ago, Yanagi and his wife got into a heated argument about the said modeling schedule since it coincides with their plan to spend a week long vacation at Okinawa. Since their wedding, they haven't spent their honeymoon due to their work. Yanagi knows that his wife has longed dream to model the high end cosmetics brand that get her as an endorser. However, he can't believe that his wife will exchange it for their private time together.
He looked at the detailed plan of their supposed to be vacation. Everything will remain as a mere plan now. He hates it when things don't go according to plan. The only consolation he got was his wife's promise that she will concentrate on being a full time psychologist after her current modeling engagement.
He started to check the quizzes of his students when suddenly, his phone rang. He immediately took it thinking that it was from his wife. However, it was Yukimura asking if they can meet. Since his wife is out, maybe it is also a good chance to loosen up a bit. Actually, he never met any of his friends after he got married since he doesn't want to upset his wife. He has read a hundred of books already on the dos and don'ts of a married man so he thought it was inappropriate to still act as a bachelor.
He took his car key and drove to the place where Yukimura invited him. It was an upscale bar with few customers hanging around. No matter how displeased he was to see his close friend and former captain in such a place, he thought that maybe it was also the right place for him to clear his mind.
"I never thought you would accept my invitation to come." Yukimura said as he smiled a bit and raised his glass of whiskey.
"Yeah, I think I need booze like you do.", Yanagi replied as he poured whiskey on a glass for himself.
Yukimura eyed his friend as he gently rested his chin on his palm. "Married life woes?"
Yanagi nodded and drank the bitter liquid. "Indeed. Married woes, but let us not talk about it. Tell me, what is so good about this drink that you often drown yourself for a year already?"
"Nothing is good about this. I actually hates the burning bitter taste.", Yukimura replied with a boring expression.
"Then you better stop getting wasted and get back to your senses. It has been a year Seiichi since you take a break from your tennis career.", Yanagi said as he finished the liquor on his glass.
"I told her to let me finish the season's game then we will get married. However, she can't wait any longer and she decided to leave me. She is insensitive. When she doesn't get what she wants, we would argue.", Yukimura blurted out the feelings that he contained for the past year.
Yanagi is speechless as Yukimura's words echoes on his head. "Cannot wait.. Insensitive.. Argue.."
"Ne, Renji.. did I say something wrong?", Yukimura pouted a little.
"Didn't you like somebody who knows what she wanted in life? I believe she only wanted what is the best for both of you.", Yanagi replied trying to figure out something.
Yukimura ran his slender fingers through his hair and lightly chuckled in despair. "No, she didn't. You know Renji, life is not a book to follow. You do not know if you are hurting the most precious person to you because you are becoming insensitive of their feelings. Tell me Renji, have you asked your wife even for once what she really wants? Or do you only assume the things that she likes because that is what you want? "
It's like a ticking bomb exploded in Renji's ears upon hearing Yukimura's words. What Yukimura feels about his ex-girlfriend might be the same as what his wife feels for him. He might be doing the same mistake of always wanting that everything happened according to his plan. All this time he thought he was sensitive enough not to hurt his wife's feelings, but in reality, it was the other way around. There are two things he now realized. He is insensitive and he hurts her.
He dropped by at Yukimura's condominium and made sure that his close friend was safe before he went home. Yanagi doesn't like to see another tabloid showing Yukimura's wasted photo with different speculations as to why he is on that state.
"Thank you, Seiichi.", he said under his breath as he leaves Yukimura. He now knew what to do to his married life.
The first thing that Yanagi does when he went back home was to book the earliest flight to South Korea to find his wife and apologize. He packed his things and grabbed the letter that his wife left on the coffee table. He read the letter during his flight.
Renji,
I leave this morning with a heavy heart since I know that you disapprove of what I am to do. However, you also know how important this is to me. This is the last time that I will be a product endorser. I hope you understand. Let us move our scheduled trip to Okinawa once I came back.
Ps. I was accepted as a full time psychologist at Rikkai University under the Faculty of Psychology. We will have more time together after New Year.
Mia
Renji's eyes widened upon reading that his wife will be joining him in Rikkaidai. He cannot believe that his wife applied at his workplace. He knew that his wife applied for a researcher position in a university but he has no idea that it was Rikkadai. He really has lots of short comings to fill in once they met.
In the morning, he used his data prowess a.k.a stalking skills to detect his wife's location. First, he decided to surprise her with a bouquet of flowers that he sent to her hotel room. However, Mia wasn't able to receive the flowers since she left earlier than her schedule to meet a new friend whom she met at the airport. She offered helped to her new friend after she learned that the latter is having trouble communicating with a Japanese client.
After his plan failed, Yanagi decided to call a food delivery service to send lunch for everyone in his wife's photo shoot. However, Mia wasn't able to take a break and eat because she was suddenly interviewed for her new endorsement.
Yanagi rubbed his temple. Maybe he should fetch Mia in the afternoon after work. He rented a car and waited for Mia. However, out of exhaustion, he falls asleep and when he checked the surroundings, Mia's team already left. If Sanada was with him, his friend has already shouted at him for slacking off.
He drove around the town and stopped on a local café. The waiter handed him the menu and he ordered a cup of cappuccino. He sat in the corner table and read Mia's letter again. He has wasted a whole day without even making amends to his wife.
The waiter placed his order before him but it confused him when he saw a slice of cheesecake. "Excuse me, I didn't order a cheesecake.", he protested.
"Somebody bought it for you.", the waiter replied and he handed him a piece of paper.
Yanagi was puzzled. He didn't know anyone in the place. The probabilities of the people he knew who could be at the same place flooded his mind. "Must it be.."
Yanagi took the piece of paper and read it. "I appreciate all your effort today. –Mia"
The data master got up from his sit upon reading the note and looked around for his wife. From a distant, he saw Mia smiling at him. The beautiful lady walked towards him and Yanagi cannot help it but to hug his wife.
"I'm sorry..", he whispered softly in her ear while still hugging her.
"I'm sorry too." Mia replied as she broke from his hug and cupped his cheeks.
Sometimes, few words are the hardest to say. Maybe the books are not always correct. Maybe probabilities are not always reliable. Maybe he should start doing things spontaneously. His inner self chuckled at how dense he could be when it comes to love and relationship.
"How do you know that I am here?", Yanagi asked as he took a sip of cappuccino.
A smirk formed at the corner of Mia's lips. "The probability that my husband is sitting dejectedly at a café near the hotel where he checked in is 99.99%."
Yanagi's faked a cough to hide his embarrassment. "So where is the .01%?"
"Here.", Mia replied and suddenly pulled him for a kiss.
The scene that unfolds in the café is like a happy ending of a Korean drama where Yanagi and Mia serve as the lead actors six days before Christmas Eve.
