Chapter 29 – What's in a Bloodline

Naruto stared at the people gathered in his office. His former Jōnin instructor had requested and official meeting with him. Kakashi had even requested Tsunade's presence in said meeting. The blond Shinobi had stared out of his office to see if the Hokage monument was in one piece (it was), and then checked to see if he was under Genjutsu (he was not), before agreeing to the meeting to take place as urgently as possible.

So, about three hours after the request passed his desk, he had Tsunade and Kakashi in his office, said office under lockdown (the ANBU in the wall the only other presence).

"That was fast," Kakashi remarked. "I half thought I would have to track you down to Ichiraku's and bring you to your office kicking and screaming the whole way."

The Hokage glared at this former instructor. "Kakashi, you sent a formal request," Naruto stated, like that explained the urgency of the situation. And it did. Kakashi was never formal in anything. He used windows to enter and exit the Hokage office, he read what amounted to porn in public while he taught Genin, and he was always counted on to be at least three hours late to events.

"I was so shocked, I started to think I was under Genjutsu. I was this close to having Sakura punch me, just to check. Then I thought it was a prank, until I saw the formal request. No one can replicate your writing hand."

Tsunade snorted in amusement. She had kept nodding in agreement to every point Naruto made.

Kakashi shrugged. "It is an urgent matter."

"Well, we are both here, get on with this," Tsunade urged him.

Kakashi nodded. "Today, due to a stroke of luck, Harry came across a piece of information. Lupin Teddy is going to be a father. We do know the mother is pregnant still, but we do not know when and where the baby will come in this world. And according to Harry, the chances are that Teddy's progeny will inherit their Bloodline Limit."

Naruto blinked.

Tsunade, who had been Shinobi far longer, and had lived through many more wars and a much bloodier Shinobi era, sucked in a breath. "That… is not good. Not good at all."

Kakashi nodded. "I have to assume that the conception happened during one of Teddy's missions. As of right now we don't know any candidates other than the woman during his long-term undercover mission. Harry is tracking him down and to inform him about the news."

"Better he hears it from the man that raised him," Tsunade agreed. "Not that this will change the shock factor." She sighed. "I'm getting too old for things like this."

Neither Shinobi commented on her last comment.

Naruto shook his head, as of to clear it. "So, Lupin Teddy is going to be a father. It happened during a mission. His kid will end up with a bloodline limit. I got this. But why is Kakashi so tense about this? It's not the first or the last time an unplanned pregnancy happened."

"I forget your generation was raised in an entirely different manner than mine," Kakashi sighed.

"To be fair to Naruto, usually Clans have to worry about things like these," Tsunade commented. "I did not think to go over cases like these with him, nor did Shikaku."

Naruto blinked. "Cases like this?" he repeated.

Kakashi clapped his hands. "Then, I gather it's time for a history lesson on Shinobi practices. Back in the early days of Shinobi, before the Hidden villages started forming, when it life for us was bloodier and more violent, it was not rare for Kunoichi to be tasked to steal a blood line. The easiest way to do that was to kidnap small children either as infants or toddlers. It's what nearly happened back when Hinata was a child and Kumogakure attempted to snatch her. There were several attempts on the Uchiha as well, both before and after the Massacre. The more powerful or more useful the bloodline, the greater the interest in it."

He paused. "The second way…Its for Kunoichi to get pregnant by a target they get assigned to."

"Not necessarily a prominent Bloodline holder but someone with a developed Bloodline limit for certain. Certain traits have predisposition to carry. Bloodline limits that deal with sight are usually easier to transfer. Bloodline limits that are the result of human experimentation usually do not carry to the next generation, unless that Clan used inbreeding to strengthen the traits," Tsunade stated. "The kunoichi would often pose as civilian women and upon confirmation of the mission's success…"

"She means when they got pregnant," Kakashi clarified to Naruto.

"I got that," Naruto muttered.

"As I was saying, when they knew the pregnancy was underway, they either remained under cover as sleeper agents for as long as needed, or they faked their deaths and got back to their clan or village to give birth to that child. It was always a fifty-fifty chance that the baby would carry the Bloodline limit they wanted to. Whatever happened, the children from such unions were usually raised ignorant of the fact. If they had no abilities with chakra manipulations whatsoever, they usually stayed to widen the gene pool of the clan or as monitored civilians. But if they had enough chakra they always ended up Shinobi, and of course if they had an ounce of sense, it was easy to understand how they came to life," Tsunade concluded.

"It was a common enough phenomenon that most Hidden villages, early one, put regulations and guidelines in place about such practices," Kakashi explained. "You are aware that the Hyuuga employ the 'Caged Bird Seal'. It was developed originally due kidnapping and later on spread more extensively to the Branch members due to the third way of acquiring a Bloodline limit, harnessing the body part. That practice is usually only for Limits that focus on say the eyes, or more rarely the ears or vocal cords."

Naruto had a horrified face at that. "There were really people who stole...? Who does that?!" he exclaimed, feeling unsettled and squeamish.

Tsunade and Kakashi both shrugged.

"Since we're on this topic, some clans like the Uchina, and an earlier branch of the Yamanaka clan had other practices to deal with such phenomena, before joining Konoha. It was common for them, when a child was stolen and could not be retrieved, or if they were discovered later on, to be hunted down and eliminated. It was one of the first tasks that was given to the so called 'Hunter Nin'."

Naruto was left staring. "I have never, ever heard of this. Or thought this could happen," he muttered. "Did Konoha also do these things?"

Tsunade shared a look with Kakashi. "I have seen old records of the Senju, well before Konoha's founding, that suggested the practice was known to them but was only done if the child was a member of a Clan defector. But, no. Even the Uchina stopped had stopped that tactic before Konoha formed."

Then the silvered haired Shinobi cleared his throat. "Since we are on this topic, I am a product of a 'Honeypot mission' to use the current term."

Naruto choked. "What do you mean?"

Kakashi shrugged. "Well, the Hatake Clan, while we had the distinctive hair and white Chakra, we did not have the reputation of the Hyuuga, or the Uchiha, or say the Inuzuka. And most of them died during the Clan Wars. By the time of the First Shinobi War there were officially five Shinobi listed in the Clan Register and I only ever met my father. Because my father became infamous during the First Shinobi War, it was not as easy for a Kunoichi to approach him and try and seduce him. He was paranoid enough to be guarded against them and he knew of the seduction practice. The task was given to a civilian. It was luck really that my father managed to charm her and that she fell in love with him and defected to Konoha, and had me."

Their current Hokage turned to Tsunade. "Did you ever assign any such missions?"

Tsunade shook her head in the negative. "Honey pot missions with the goal of extracting information or assassination, to both Shinobi and Kunoichi? Yes, I have. All Hokage approve of them. If you mean for the sole purpose of acquiring a Bloodline limit, then no. It's not a tactic Konoha employs; at least not since Sarutobi Hiruzen became Hokage."

"Minato never got behind this tactic and as far as I know never approved any missions of this kind. He, too, was a product of such a mission. His coloring and affinity was originally from one of the lesser known clans of Iwa. It is probably why most people don't always see you and assume Konoha. You have neither the characteristics of the Senju or the Yamanaka, and they are the only known Clans that have blond and blue-eyed members," Kakashi explained. "Your hair color is really not even common in the Land of Fire."

Tsunade sighed. "On another note, I know that Danzo had several of his Ne operatives attempt to acquire Bloodline Limits from other Villages. He was dead set on acquiring Kaguya clan's Shikotsumyaku technique, but as far as I know he never managed that. He got a couple of others from before Kiri started their Bloodline purges. I won't even mention what he did with the Uchiha and the Senju."

"Please don't," Naruto shuddered.

"Anyway, history lesson is over," Kakashi said. "Naruto, any questions?"

"No, I get it. It's a big deal that someone outside Konoha might have a child with one of our Shinobi's Bloodline Limits."

"Yes, it is," Kakashi confirmed. "Also, aside from this, we all know that Harry and Teddy have a, let us call it multi-purpose Bloodline Limit. Over the years we have all seen examples of this. And Harry has explained to me it, their abilities are a dominant trait, the child will inherit those abilities. Now, the abilities themselves… The child might inherit Teddy's ability to shift his characteristics. When he was born his hair changed almost immediately. No other Shinobi ability can do that. Also, Teddy has several more feral attributes due to his father. He gets angry and aggressive during Full Moons, he has canines and his eyes shift to almost wolf like during those nights. He also eats his dinner bloody those nights."

Tsunade cut in, "Those are not civilian traits. And those abilities are shared with another Clan from Konoha. Someone might liken the traits to the Inuzuka, and that is not a leap we want them to make."

Kakashi and Naruto agreed.

"That last mission Lupin was on, it was heavily under classified, right?" Tsunade recalled.

Naruto scowled. "One of many, but yes, it was the most serious one. Ibiki and Anko are in charge of tracking the culprits and in their last briefing they told me they were making progress."

"He slept with his mark's wife," Kakashi stated. "It was to keep his cover. We need to find out if she is pregnant. And then we need to consider the options we have."

Their Hokage blinked. "Options?"

"One option is terminating the pregnancy," the silver haired Shinobi explained in a factual tone. "Or we could wait until the birth, then take the baby and bring it to Konoha."

Naruto stood from his desk, feeling anger for the first time since the meeting started. From all the previous revelations, Kakashi mused that it had taken him longer than he bet to react.

"What are you saying? We cannot kill an unborn baby! Or its mother!" Kakashi's former Genin exclaimed. "That… I cannot approve of such a mission. First, we don't know for certain that it was a deliberate attempt to steal a Bloodline. Second, I will not have any of my Shinobi do such a thing. I can understand why assassination missions need to happen, but killing children… That's not how Shinobi should act. That's not what my Konoha is. We should not be even discussing this. Children should be protected," Naruto stressed. "No. That is not even an option. And then stealing the child from the mother? That's not better." He shook his head. "I disagree with both options."

Tsunade and Kakashi shared a look. In truth, neither of them had expected Naruto to agree to either of those options.

"Your opinions on what the Shinobi way should be are very much appreciated," Kakashi told his former student. "Quite frankly, your idealism will definitely make Konoha stronger. But I am a product of another, bloodier era," he gently pointed out. "I can already tell every single way the situation could get worse if we, as Konoha, do not get involved. One, is that they realize that one of their civilians has a child with what looks like a Bloodline Limit not native to their country; new Bloodlines are not easy to pop up as you might think. They will then try to track down which Shinobi village has clans or members with that ability. Maybe not immediately, but after a couple of years, or five, or ten. Now also keep in mind that Teddy is a Jōnin , a very competent one. It is a matter of time before he becomes famous, either for his own abilities or because he is one of my students. He will at some point get his own entry in a Bingo Book. Connections to the similarities will be happen sooner or later," Kakashi stated.

Then he took a deep breath and kept on speaking. "The scenarios are many, and none of them good. Teddy's child could show no ability whatsoever. Harry doubts that, but let us imagine that happened. They will be raised civilian. If they are connected to Teddy in any shape or form, they can become targets for any of Teddy's enemies. Harry once explained that any children Teddy might have will likely look like him, I mean the facial structure and the clearly foreign eye shape. Teddy could be transformed into anyone, but the child will look like him in his true form."

Naruto winced. "That's… not good."

"It's not," Tsunade agreed. "There are many other similar scenarios to consider. Kakashi and I discussed at least ten more that go on a similar pattern and none look good. You could ask a Nara and they could find at least ten more ways this could turn into a disaster."

"And I would also like to point out that there is the other aspect of their abilities to consider," the last Hatake commented. "Harry has shown and told us several of the things he can do, but living with him, I can tell you now that there are several more manifestations. Not things that focus on combat, but things that stand out, abilities that stand out and vary on the things they accomplish. Harry said their powers manifest early. Not in a bad way, but it can get dangerous." He shot a look at the walls around them, as if considering holding back due to the ANBU present in the office.

"How dangerous," Tsunade asked.

Kakashi shrugged. "I know from anecdotes, that when Teddy was two or so, he summoned his bottle."

The two blonds blinked.

"Summoned?" Naruto asked.

Kakashi moved his hand. "He reached and with his… energy, moved the bottle from the counter to his baby hands," he explained. "Harry mentioned he found it cute and bemoaned he did not take a picture."

"He can do that?" Tsunade exclaimed.

Kakashi shrugged. "If the circumstances are right."

Naruto groaned. "That's both a cool ability and a big headache."

Kakashi agreed and raised a hand and started numbering examples. "Another time he set something on fire, managed to change Harry's hair to another color, and on one occasion made something explode. From what Harry told me abilities can also include floating and a technique like Shunshin. These are five, not one, but five additional abilities," Kakashi stressed. "No other known Bloodline Limit can do that. And sometimes babies get scared, or stressed. Babies with their abilities can affect their surroundings. Harry told me he could counter most of what Teddy did as a child, but will a regular civilian be able to do that? Even a shinobi will use a water Jutsu to put out a fire that pops up next to them. A civilian is more likely to panic and get hurt."

"Things can get explosive," Naruto muttered.

"I'll say," Tsunade stressed. "The number of kids I have treated because of a sudden appearance of their chakra…"

"Not often, but yes, that could happen quite literally," Kakashi agreed. "It makes the child potentially a danger to themselves, the mother, anyone around them. It's partly why I even mentioned to you that taking the child away from the mother as an option. In my eyes, it's also like making certain no one gets hurt because of ignorance."

The Hokage pursed his lips, obviously still greatly disliking the idea. "I… I hate it, but I understand. I still disagree, but I can at least now understand," he told his former Jōnin instructor.

The Godaime sighed. "Which like a circle, brings as back to tracking down the mother to be. And we need Lupin to know how to do that. We need to find out what happened."

Kakashi nodded, started to say something and then stopped again.

Tsunade noticed. "You wanted to say something? Looks like you had some short of epiphany."

"Teddy's mission was misclassified."

"We said that. Several times," Naruto muttered. Then his blue eyes went wide. "You think this was deliberate?"

"You think that someone wanted to steal the bloodline and that's why they messed up the intel?" Tsunade narrowed her eyes at Kakashi.

"It was not just one mission, but several different ones. Only two involved the 'honeypot' way of action and the other one involved a same sex couple so no children could ever result from it," Naruto stated. "I remember well because I went over those cases myself multiple times."

Kakashi shrugged. "It could fit. Teddy was too young for what the mission asked for in my eyes. And he did not have the necessary training. And I don't just mean the mechanics of sex, but mentally as well, he was not ready. I know he took precautions."

"You mean he used condoms," Naruto stated.

Tsunade tilted her head. "Well."

The two men turned to her.

"Condoms break," she stated. "And as a medic I can tell you that on a dry surface, such as clothing or bedding, sperm will be dead by the time the semen has dried. In water, such as a warm bath or hot tub, they'll likely live longer because they thrive in warm, wet places. But the odds that sperm in a tub of water will find their way inside a woman's body and cause her to get pregnant are extremely low. That said, when sperm are inside a woman's body, they can live for up to 5 days (1)."

Kakashi and Naruto blinked.

"Thank you for an impromptu biology lesson," the silver haired Shinobi told her.

She raised an eyebrow. "What I am trying to get to, is that sperm can be harvested from semen and with the right procedures, DNA can be extracted and used (2). Danzo robbed graves and fresh corpses. Orochimaru did many more experiments in that vein. It is not an impossibility."

Naruto blinked. "But that could mean… Someone could have really set this whole thing up."

"Yes, that is much more worrying," Kakashi mused. "We have several possible problems ahead, and, if this was a set up, then the situation is a lot more urgent and complicated."

"I want sake," Tsunade.

"Me too," Naruto sighed as he dug his hands in his hair. Then he threw an accusing look at Tsuande, who just smirked at his plight. They both knew that Naruto as a Jinchūriki could not get drunk.

Kakashi shook his head, "We all could use it, but none of us will be of any use unless we are sober."

Naruto then tilted his head. "Someone tugged at the barrier. There's someone knocking on the door."

"That would be Harry and Teddy," Kakashi guessed.

"I'll let them in," Naruto said. "And then we need more help."

"I'll tell your assistant to ask for a Nara," Tsunade stated.
