The next few weeks showed to be busier then the weeks before. Good to her word Eddie decided to put her scholarship on hold for a semester as a precaution as the end of her pregnancy closed in. When she was ready Eddie would ease back in with online classes before going back in person. At home she organized the twins room how she wanted, hung up clothes and guided Jamie where to put the furniture.
Her small, round bump grew in the fifth months which triggered back pain from the added weights and hurt feet. While he was home Jamie kept her busy with small tasks that let her sit, like folding laundry. It kept her busy and made her feel like she was helping.
They bought clothes from a store that would fit her comfortably, mostly dresses. Even with that her stomach stuck out from underneath the outfit. Considering she was in good spirits with more energy which often led to them connecting in the bedroom.
In the shadows of their room Jamie watched his beautiful bride after their latest session which was almost loud enough to alert the neighbors. His shoulders still showed red marks but he smiled in amazement this beautiful woman was his.
Her hair fell loosely over her front, eyes looking down to her stomach. "I grew even more in a month. Look at this Jamie. "
"That's why Doctor Brian wants you to rest with your feet up until you're ready to give birth," Jamie softly pushed the loose hair behind her shoulder, kissing her. "You're so beautiful Eddie. "
Sighing quietly her arms circled around his neck. She was grateful hearing his kind words but he had to say that as her husband. "I know I heard and I don't like not doing anything but for the twins I will," she tilted her head back to give him access.
They fell asleep after a second round only Jamie had his head resting by her stomach, their arms around each other. Light pierced through the half closed blinds but neither saw it.
Jamie awoke just after two thirty according to the clock on his bed stand. He slowly lifted his head, turned to glance at Eddie's rising and falling in the dark as she slept. "Must have been dreaming," he whispered softly. Yawning, he lay his head back down again.
That's when he felt it again, a very subtle kick similar to the one that woke him up. Looking up again he placed a hand over her stomach, suddenly wide awake. "Eddie? Eddie wake up," Jamie urgently called excitedly.
She easily stirred, looking at him while sitting up slightly. His blue eyes rounded on her, "Did you feel that? The kicking?"
As if on cue another kick pushed against her where Jamie's hand lay. Even in the dark Eddie saw his eyes twinkling wet, "I felt it yeah. Oh there goes the other one. Jamie, they're kicking. Ooh now they're kicking a lot."
His eyes shone looking at Eddie as he cupped both hands over hers on top of her stomach. They stayed up just to continue feeling their babies kicks.
Neither were ready to get up the following morning and while the sickness decreased as her fifth month progressed Eddie would still have nausea on occasion. So when she climbed out of bed at six thirty Jamie only turned over, thinking she had to get sick again. When she finally climbed underneath the covers to curl up with him did Jamie sit up.
As their bodies touched he immediately felt heat radiating off her. "Eddie, you're burning up," Jamie pressed a hand against her sweaty head, frowning at how hot she felt. "Do you feel okay? Do you have any pains?"
Eddie only shook her head at the question, "Just hot, really hot and dizzy. I barely made it back to bed. I was ready to call you to come help."
He pressed his lips together while laying her down, "I'm going to get you some water and a cool rag to cool you down then call the doctor, okay? Just hold on for a minute." He kissed her head, watching with a new worry as Eddie forced a smile.
Quickly so she wasn't alone for very long Jamie ran into the bathroom and brought back a cool rag. When he came back in Eddie lay on his pillow, half covered with her eyes closed. "Eddie? Eddie, babe look at me," Jamie rushed to the bed quickly sliding to his wife's side.
With the rag in hand he lifted her head and breathed out when he heard her soft breaths. "Hang on babe;" Jamie fumbled for his phone on the dresser, calling for help with one hand holding the rag on Eddie's head gently.
"This is Officer Reagan, shield number 60528. I need a bus to 120-58 92nd street apartment 6n. My wife is five months pregnant and burning up. She's not responsive but breathing," Jamie told dispatch shakily. He held an arm around Eddie, continuing to talk as while he helped her until the medics arrived.
EMT's knocked his apartment door within ten minutes of getting the call, let in by a shaking Jamie. "She came back to bed and was burning up. She said she felt dizzy and hot so I went to get a rag but by the time I came back she wasn't responding."
The medics immediately checked Eddie's heart and blood pressure. "Her blood pressure is high and rising. We have to bus her now," the senior medic threw her instruments down to retrieve the stretcher.
In a flash they had Eddie strapped onto a wheeled stretcher, strapped in for safety reasons and their equipment organized to help her on the way down. Jamie followed, rounded eyes and climbed right into the back of their ambulance. When they got Eddie in the senior medic followed so her partner could drive.
"What's her name sir," Lydia asked while her partner whizzed them through the streets.
"Eddie."
Lydia leaned over her patient gently, "Eddie? My name is Lydia and I'm going to help you. Your husband is right here so just hang on for me. "
For Jamie the ride seemed to take forever even though the hospital was close by. A team waited outside to transfer Eddie while the medics updated the presiding doctor. "You're her husband? We will try our best to help your wife all right? I'll come out the minute we know something."
Before his very eyes they disappeared behind double doors for staff only, leaving Jamie standing in the empty hall alone. He shook so bad he could barely his thoughts together let alone walk. It took several minutes for Jamie to make it to the waiting room seats. Once he did his legs shook uncontrollably, head ducked his head and prayed.
The doctor came out after a million prayers sent up and hours of waiting, going right to the worried husband. "Mr Reagan, your wife is resting but we need to keep her for at least a few days to monitor her and the babies. For right now they're all okay but I'm worried. She has very high blood pressure as a result of the pregnancy which is fairly common. "
"From here until she gives birth and when Eddie is up I will speak to her but I want her on strict bed rest. That means no stress and keep her hydrated. I would also recommend her having a c-section and would talk to her regular doctor as well as Eddie," Doctor Travis spoke softly.
"Can I see her? Please doctor," Jamie rounded his eyes.
Doctor Travis offered a slow nod, stood and led Jamie down the hall to a private room. In the only bed Eddie lay on two pillows, hooked to machines that not only monitored her vitals but their twins. Her eyes were closed but not squeezed shut, certainly more relaxed then when he last saw her. Jamie slowly approached the bed, cupping her hand. It was hot but not burning.
With one swift move he brushed his hand through her hair back behind her ear and kissed her. "I'm here Eddie. I love you babe. Doctor wants to watch all three of you so looks like we'll be staying. I have days off and am not leaving your side." Holding her waist gently he placed a kiss on her lips, letting it linger.
Taking a seat right there on the bed he cupped her hand, free hand carefully around Eddie's shoulder, refusing to move. He sat quietly for hours just holding his wife for hours until she stirred in his arms. It was subtle at first, her eyes slowly fluttering open, then her hand moved.
"Eddie? Oh thank God. How do you feel? You scared me to death Eddie," Jamie kissed her twice. "It's okay, your blood pressure rose really high so the doctors want to monitor you and the babies. I'm going to page the doctor."
Eddie licked her lips slowly over the dry skin, before speaking, "Feel hot Jamie. Our babies? Are they okay?"
"I know Eddie. The doctor is on his way so we can ask about what our options are. Our babies are okay Eddie. The doctor doesn't want you stressed out. He's putting you on bed rest until you have the babies. Oh here he is," Jamie finished just as Dr Travis came in.
His warm fatherly smile put the young couple at ease as he sat down in a seat near the bed. "Good to see you awake Eddie. I want to check you over then I heard Jamie telling you what he and I talked about. For the safety of you and your babies I don't want you lifting, moving around or getting to stressed. When your home drink a lot of water to stay cool and rest. I have to call your doctor but I would like you have a C- section."
Eddie's brows fell, "What's that mean doctor?"
"Close to your due date unless there is an emergency situation we would make a small incision to take the babies out rather then delivering them vaginally. There are less risks for all of you, especially with your blood pressure so high."
Eyes rounding Eddie looked at Jamie. "And are there any risks if the doctor does a c-section," Jamie asked, taking her hand.
"Of course there is. She could get an infection, bleeding and in rare cases heart attack but the risks are very slim that any of those things happen," Dr Travis looked between the two ready to field questions seeing the scared look on the young woman's face. "Let me examine Eddie then I will let you talk."
Jamie stayed by Eddie's side while the doctor went through his routine examination until he was satisfied. They weren't able to give Eddie much due to her pregnancy but assured the heat would subside. When the doctor took his leave Jamie cupped Eddie's chin.
His finger slowly rubbed over her cheek in slow circles. "I think we should get the C-section Eddie. It sounds like less of a risk for a three of you. I can't loose any of you Eddie. I know you're scared but I'll be in there with you."
"I am scared and more now. I don't know what's going to happen and…" Eddie slowly shook her head.
"Eddie, I will be by your side the whole time. The doctor insists a c-section is less risk and they know what they're doing. "
Her eyes quickly closed so Jamie let the conversation go for the moment. He held Eddie, not moving from her side while she rested, relieved but still scared. Loosing track of the time he text Renzulli and his grandpa to about what happened. Work would be put on hold until Eddie was released. As long as she was staying so was Jamie.
Despite being so early in the morning Pop threw on clothes and hurried out to catch a cab uptown. He rushed through the hospital double doors, finding out from a nurse where they would be keeping Eddie. Hurriedly pressing the button to floor six Henry past other rooms, the nurse's station ignoring their calls that visiting hours didn't start yet.
When he finally stood in the doorway Henry couldn't keep a smile off his smile. Jamie held Eddie in his arms while she slept on him, even with all the tubes connected to the machines. A tear sparkled in the older man's eyes at the familiar sight. He himself staying in the hospital with Betty, Frank with Mary all holding them. He hoped Jamie wouldn't have to go through that pain.
Quietly he turned to sit in the waiting room until visiting hours started so they could sleep a little more. According to the machines Eddie was alive and that's what mattered.
