When the heroes arrived in Sokovia, Steve rescued Natasha, while everyone else helped evacuate civilians. After a while, Hermione noticed a crack stretching across the ground. Ultron had built a machine to turn the city into a meteorite to destroy the Earth.
"Stark, you worry about bringing the city back down safely," Steve instructed. "The rest of us have one job: tear these things apart. You get hurt, hurt 'em back. You get killed, walk it off." Unfortunately, the only way to save the world would be to destroy Sokovia.
"Everyone up here versus everyone down there?" Natasha reasoned. "There's no math there."
"I'm not leaving this rock with one civilian on it," Steve declared.
"I didn't say we should leave," Natasha remarked. "There are worse ways to go. Where else am I gonna get a view like this?"
"Glad you like the view, Romanoff," Fury's voice came over the comms while a Helicarrier floated into view. "It's about to get better. Nice, right? I pulled her out of mothballs with a couple of old friends. She's dusty, but she'll do."
"This is S.H.I.E.L.D.?" Pietro asked.
"This is what S.H.I.E.L.D. is supposed to be," Hermione responded.
"This is not so bad," Pietro replied.
Soon, the Avengers gathered at a church in the center of the city to protect the device that was levitating the city. Ultron was threatening to drop Sokovia early.
"If Ultron gets a hand on this core then we lose," Tony informed his teammates.
"Is that the best you could do?" Thor shouted at Ultron.
"You had to ask," said Steve as more robots flew up.
"This is the best I can do," Ultron would have sneered if he wasn't a machine. "This is exactly what I wanted." All of you, against all of me. How could you possibly hope to stop me?"
"Well, like the old man said, together," Tony replied. Soon it was clear that Ultron and his army were outmatched.
"You know, with the benefit of hindsight," Ultron was interrupted as the Hulk threw him into the distance.
"We gotta move out," said Steve. "Even I can tell the air is getting thin. You guys get to the boats, I'll sweep for stragglers, be right behind you."
Hermione found a group of kids that had been hiding from the robots and got them to the last boat just as it left.
The Avengers had won, but they had also lost. Pietro had died.
