It's nighttime, and Tails was in Station Square flying alone in the X-Tornado.
"The X Tornado seems to be running really great since we installed the Chaos Emerald. This has to be just about the smoothest flight I've ever been on. Huh?" he said when the Chaos Emerald started glowing. "I think it's picked up something."
Suddenly the X-Tornado started shaking.
"I can't control it! ... Something's pulling us off course!" he said and spotted a baseball stadium so he flew toward it. "Maybe it's another Chaos Emerald."
A man in the baseball stadium wove his arms.
"Stop! Stoooop!" he said and Tails pulled up in the nick of time.
"Better go down there." he said.
The man stared after the X-Tornado in astonishment.
Later, Tails landed the X-Tornado in front of the stadium and started to look around, ascending a staircase toward a bright light, which happens to be the stadium lights. He squinted at the blinding lights, but was amazed at the beauty of the stadium. He spun his namesakes and flew over to the home plate before looking around then saw the man he saw earlier, who was working on a rid able lawn mower.
"Excuse me sir!" he said but he didn't hear him. "Hello! ... You!"
Finally the man looked up so Tails put on a cute face.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
The man cowered behind the lawn mower.
"Ah! Keep away!" the man said.
"Huh? I'm sorry! It's just I was in my plane and the Chaos Emerald started glowing and- don't worry, mister, I won't hurt you." he said and the man started to come out from behind the lawn mower. "Will you please hear me out?"
Soon, Tails was sitting with the man on the bleachers.
"Sure is some story, little fella. Never would have guessed that was you flying that plane up there." the man said.
"I'm sorry if I frightened you just now, sir. I've never seen a stadium as pretty as this before. You know... the grass is practically glowing!" Tails said.
"Thanks for the compliment. Lots of folks say the turf here at Diamond Stadium is the best in the world. Which makes me happy, because I've been the groundskeeper here at Diamond for thirty years!"
"Thirty years?"
"You bet! Only I'm afraid today's my last day here at the old place." he said looking at the stadium's baseball team.
"You see, the Diamonds' manager wants to build an indoor stadium with artificial turf, so this place is gonna be demolished." the man said seeing the stadium's baseball team. "I tell you, leaving this place behind feels like the end of an era. By the way, little fella, did you mention something about an emerald?"
"Yeah." Tails said and fished out his green Chaos Emerald and held it out for the man to see. "See, I'm looking for an Emerald just like this one. It's called a Chaos Emerald."
"A wha...? Would this be what you're looking for?
To Tails' surprise, the man reached into his pocket and pulled out a cyan Chaos Emerald.
"Ah! A Chaos Emerald!" he said.
"I saw it laying next to the dumpster a couple of nights ago. Wasn't sure what it was."
Suddenly the two emeralds started to glow brightly creating a beacon of light that ascends into the air.
At Station Square Pedestrians and drivers stopped what they were doing to see the beacon.
"What is it? Is it magic? Looks like a lightning show!" pedestrian said.
Scarlet Garcia and her crew also saw the light while on lunch break.
Even Knuckles saw the beacon from outside Station Square.
'Oh no.' he thought.
"I know that light..." he said.
At Eggman's base Decoe was pointing to the screen.
"Dr. Eggman! Dr. Eggman! You might want to take a look at this, sir!" he said.
"What is that light?" Eggman asked.
"It appears to be coming from the baseball stadium."
"A stadium, you say? Fascinating..." he said then opened a drawer holding baseball equipment, and picked up a baseball. "I have a feeling there's an Emerald out in that diamond..."
Meanwhile the Thorndyke household Sonic and his friends, minus Tails, were in the dining room sitting around the table for supper. Sonic was eating an apple.
"Let's start with our first course. Which knife and fork should we use?" Ella asked.
Amy studied the silverware before getting the outermost fork and knife.
"Uh... These!" she said and giggled.
"I agree." Cream said.
"Chao chao!" Cheese said.
"That's right! You're such smart children. And what good manners!" Ella said.
"Chao!"
"I don't see why we have to learn all this "etiquette" baloney in the first place." Sonic said.
'I already learned mine three years ago.' he thought remembering being taught manors at the castle.
"My mom says it's important to learn good manners so we can eat properly." Chris said.
"Well, I never had t- I mean never learned anything about manners and I've been eating my while life."
'That was close. They know about Sonia and Manic and that's it.' he thought.
Everyone looked at him for a second then Tanaka leaned in toward him as he bit into an apple.
"Sonic, kindly use your fruit knife." he said.
"I wonder what's keeping Tails? He should be back by now." Chuck said.
Everyone stopped when they heard laughter and saw Bokkun flying into the room wearing a baseball cap.
"Sorry, I didn't know it was meal time. But Dr. Eggman's got a real important message for ya!" Bokkun said.
Sonic and Tanaka immediately confronted Bokkun.
"Not again!" Sonic said.
"How dare you barge in on us like this! You need to learn some manners!" Tanaka said.
"Eh, that's what you say." Bokkun said and turned on the television he was carrying.
"Good evening, Sonic. I suggest you take a look out your window." Eggman said.
"Window?" Sonic said and he, Chris, and Chuck headed to the window.
"What is it?" Chuck asked.
'More than one Chaos Emerald.' Sonic thought.
"That light's coming from a Chaos Emerald!" Cream said.
"Is she right?" Chris said.
"You're half right, Cream. But that's not just one Chaos Emerald." Sonic said.
"Correct. We both want those Emeralds, but why not be good sports about it? That's why I suggest you suit up and meet me over..." Eggman said then disappeared and returned wearing his baseball gear. "...at the Diamond Stadium!"
"Diamond Stadium?" Tanaka said.
"What for?" Chuck asked.
"I challenge you and your friends to a game of winner-take-all baseball!" Eggman said and laughed as the television's screen faded to black.
Sonic was now flustered.
"You guys might be a little rusty, so how about some batting practice?" Bokkun said.
"Uh-oh." Sonic said and Bokkun replaced the television with a baseball bat.
Then he tossed a ball into the air, then spun the bat wildly, hitting many balls in the direction of everyone else in the room. Amy and Cream ducked while Chris, Sonic, Tanaka, and Chuck tried to avoid the balls. Finally Ella grabbed Bokkun.
"You got a decent swing, but you keep hitting it foul!" she said and threw Bokkun out the window. "You good for nothing!"
"What kind of pitch was that?" Chris asked.
"I think it was a screwball." Chuck said.
"We have to get to that stadium!" Sonic said.
Soon everyone was driving to Diamond Stadium with their baseball equipment, and Sonic ran ahead of them.
At Diamond Stadium the light from the Chaos Emeralds finally faded.
"What just happened there, little fella?" the man asked.
"That always happens when Chaos Emeralds come together. I just hope the wrong person didn't see it." Tails said and looked up to see Eggman laughing in his Eggmobile, wearing his baseball gear.
"Well, if it isn't my foxy high-flying friend." Eggman said.
"Dr. Eggman!"
Eggman laughed, then looked around.
"Huh? Where's the rest of your team? It's almost game time!" he said.
"Forget about it! You want the Chaos Emeralds, but I won't give 'em to ya!"
"Could it be Sonic and his pals are choosing to forfeit? I must say, that's very unsportsmanlike of them." Eggman said. "If there's one thing I hate more than a meddling hedgehog, it's a quitter!" he said shouting.
"I don't get it. What are you talking about?"
"If they won't play ball with me, I still win!"
A claw protruded from the bottom of the Eggmobile. It tried to grab the Chaos Emerald from Tails, but he leapt out of the way. The claw turned toward the man.
"W-What's goin' on here anyway?" he asked.
After a struggle, the claw finally got took the Chaos Emerald from the man.
"Oh no! He's got the Emerald!" Tails said.
The Chaos Emerald was then deposited into Eggman's open hand.
"One down, one to go. Hand it over. I want it fair and square. Now give me that second Emerald or I'll have to use a force play!" Eggman said.
"I'd like to see you try it!" he said and fled from the claw, that was pursuing him.
Suddenly Knuckles appeared from nowhere.
"Tails!" Knuckles said and smashed the claw with one hefty punch. "That was close. You all right?"
"Knuckles! Am I glad to see you!"
"Well, look who it is. I like your costume."
"You again! And what brings you here? Doing Sonic's dirty work? Helping him to get his sister back?" Eggman said causing Knuckles to turn a little red.
"Let's get out of here, Tails." Knuckles said to Tails.
"Okay!" Tails said.
"You don't have to!" Sonic said then zoomed in, circles Tails and Knuckles a few times, and stopped in front of them. "Hey. How's it goin', Knuckles?"
"Well, if it isn't Sonic. I thought you weren't going to show up, so I took one of the Emeralds and I was just collecting the second." Eggman said then everyone else arrived. "But now that you're here, maybe we can play ball."
"All right, just give us back that Chaos Emerald!"
"All in good time, my speedy little opponent. But first let me introduce you to my fellow teammates."
A massive drop ship appeared overhead.
"What is that?"
A beam of light appeared underneath the drop ship, and several E-21 Ballios robots were beamed down to the ground.
"They're scaring me, Amy!" Cream said.
"It's okay." Amy said.
Soon, Eggman stood with his entire Ballios baseball team.
"Not too shabby, eh? Now why don't we knock off the pre-game ceremonies and get to the reason we're all here. It's now game time!" he said.
"Let's play ball!" Bocoe and Decoe said.
"You can't have your game here!" Tails said.
"Wait. It just so happens old Grandpa Chuck here's a big baseball fan from way back." Chuck said and Tails looked up in confusion. "A nice, friendly game of baseball sounds like a great idea to me."
"What? But Chuck..."
Eggman laughed.
"Ah, so you're Chuck, are you? Well, it's been a great pleasure to finally meet you. A ball game must sound most exciting after being cooped up in that laboratory of yours day after day."
"Hey! If you want to have a ball game, then you have to have it someplace else! Isn't anybody listening to me?!" Tails said.
"Well, Eggman, if the others are up for it, I would be more than happy to accept your challenge." Chuck said.
"But you can't have your game here! You're gonna ruin all the beautiful turf!"
"What's that loudmouth fox getting so bent out of shape for?" Decoe asked.
"Who knows." Bocoe said.
"Hey! I'll have you know this stadium means a lot to my friend!" Tails said.
"It's okay, Tails." the man said and Tails looked up at him. "Only a matter of time before it's demolished anyway."
"Have I seen you somewhere?" Chuck asked.
"Maybe during the seventh inning stretch. My name's Albert Butler. I'm the head groundskeeper here."
"Ah! I thought you looked familiar. I've seen you on television! You were good friends with the owner of the Diamonds, Elmer Johnson, right?"
"Wow, you know him?" Chris said.
"...Elmer and I don't talk much anymore." Albert said.
"This is such an honor to think that I can play baseball in the world-famous Diamond Stadium!" Chuck cried happily.
"Play?" Chris said.
"Stop blubbering and let's play baseball!" Eggman said.
"Okay." Amy said.
"How do we play?" Cream asked.
"Chao chao?" Cheese said.
"Alright, everybody! Time for the Chaos Emerald Baseball Playoff!" Chuck said and Eggman pushed him aside.
"It's the First Annual Eggman Intergalactic Baseball Challenge!" he said.
"This is sad." Knuckles said.
"And totally embarrassing." Chis said.
"One, two, one, two..." Tanak said while he stretched his legs.
Sonic was sitting on a Ballios' head.
"Does he have to be on our team?" he said thinking about how Sonia would act if she had to play this and snickered.
Then he saw Knuckles trying not to laugh to then looked at each other saying the same thing.
'She would hate this.' they thought together.
"Are we going to play too?" Cream asked.
"I don't see why not." Amy said.
"Chao chao!" Cheese said.
"Let's give it all we got, everybody!" Tanaka said while he continued to stretch.
Eggman was doing some warm-up bat swings.
"Hey Grandpa, I'm not so sure this baseball game is such a good idea. What if Eggman's got something up his sleeve?" Chris said.
"Chris, you may be right. For all we know, that guy could be using a corked bat." Chuck said.
"That's not exactly what I meant..."
"Let's decide which team will be first to bat. Rock, paper-" Eggman started but was cut off.
"You can't be serious!" Knuckles said and all eyes turned to him. "You do know what will happen if Dr. Eggman wins, don't you? He won't just be winning the game, but the Chaos Emeralds, too. If Eggman wins this game, it'll mean catastrophe for all of us."
"I'd say that's nothing but stinking thinking!
"Why ruin everyone's fun?" Chuck asked.
"C'mon Knuckles, don't you wanna play?" Amy asked.
"Don't be chicken!" Cream said.
"Chao chao-chao chao!" Cheese said.
"Me? Chicken?" Knuckles said.
"Perhaps Mr. Knuckles is simply afraid to play a game of baseball, hm?" Tanaka said.
"Afraid? I'm not afraid of anything!" Knuckles said but lying a little.
'Aside from losing Sonia. Manic and Sonic can take care of themselves.' he thought and saw Sonic smirk at him knowing what he was thinking and he turned a little red.
"Great! Then you'll play, huh?" Sonic said still smirking a little.
"...All right! You asked for it!" he said exasperated and still red. "You want a team player, I'll give you a team player! Let's get this game on!"
Finally, it was time for the game to start. Decoe served as the umpire.
"Let's play ball!" Decoe said.
Chris was first at bat.
"Bring it on!" he said.
The pitcher Ballios pitched an extremely fast ball, and the catcher Ballios caught it before Chris could react.
"Strike one." Decoe said and Chris' jaw dropped, while Sonic whistled in amazement. "Strike two."
The strikes kept mounting up.
"Strike three. One out."
Chris walked back to the bench with his head hanging.
"How could anybody hit a ball that fast?" he wondered.
Eggman chuckled.
"Loser! Okay boys, send in the next sucker!"
Tails was next to bat.
"It'll probably be a fastball." he said.
The Ballios stretched its arm until it was near Tails, then gently tossed the ball to the catcher.
"Strike one." Decoe said.
"Hey Umpire! That's not fair!" Tails said.
"What do you want? It's not my fault he's got long arms."
Amy was next to bat but using her hammer as a bat.
"Give me your best pitch, ball boy!" she said and the Ballios pitcher threw the ball. "I got it!" she said and hit the ball.
"All right!" Chris said.
"We might not lose after all." Knuckles said.
'Then we'd have two and only three left.' he thought.
In a surprise move, one Ballios fielder threw another into the air, catching the ball before it can leave the stadium.
"She's out!" Decoe said.
"Huh?... But I thought..." Amy said while Eggman laughed.
Later, Amy was the pitcher after the teams switched sides.
"Now I'll show 'em what I can do. I'm a much better pitcher anyway." she said and pitched the ball, resulting in a beanball as the Ballios batter fell apart. "Uh... Sory 'bout that!"
As Amy pitched again, a Ballios moved out from behind Cream. The Ballios batter didn't hit the ball, and Tanaka, the catcher, caught it and threw it to Tails, the first-baseman.
"Strike!" Decoe said and Tails watched as the Ballios approached, then leapt clear over him to get to first base. "Safe!"
"Losing isn't fun..." Tails said.
At the next play, the ball hit way into the air.
"And it's out of the park!" Eggman said but Sonic ran up to the top of the scoreboard and caught the ball.
"Nicely done, Sonic!" Chris said.
"Home run. Home run." Decoe said.
"You caught it, Sonic, but if it's outside the fence, it doesn't count." Chuck said.
"Huh, who says we gotta play by the rules anyway? Cut me some slack!" Sonic said.
Later, the Ballios pitcher pitched the ball, but it was batted back, shattering the pitcher.
"Sorry! That's a hit!" Amy said.
Knuckles bat the ball and started running the bases.
"Sad to say, but it's a home run." Decoe said.
Sonic and his friends cheered.
The score stood at 35-32 in Dr. Eggman's favor.
Meanwhile, Scarlet Garcia's crew were setting up.
"Alright, it's okay!" the cameraman said.
"Huh? Are you sure it's okay? Am I on? Ahem!" Scarlet said and appeared on the screen. "Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. This Scarlet Garcia with a live report from Diamond Stadium. There appears to be a most unusual baseball game happening right this moment. The notorious Dr. Eggman and a team of robots are playing a game against Sonic and friends here at the stadium, the soon-to-be former home of the Diamonds. This is certain to become sports history. This is Scarlet Garcia reporting. Stay tuned to SSTV for continuous coverage of this momentous game."
"We're closing in on 'em! Now let's give it our best shot! Tanaka!" Chuck said.
"Yes sir!" Tanaka said.
"I'm putting in a pinch hitter for you."
"Huh?"
"It's Cheese!"
"Chaaaooo!"
The Ballios pitcher analyzed a tiny strike zone, sweatdrops, and pitched the ball, only to get a ball all four times.
"Ball one! ... Ball two! ... Ball three! ... Ball four! Take your base." Decoe said.
"Chao!" Cheese said and moved to first base.
"You big loser! You call yourself a pitcher?!" Eggman said to the Ballios pitcher.
Later, Chuck was showing Cream the correct way to hold a bat.
"Understand? Give it your best shot!" he said.
"Okay." she said and started heading toward home plate.
Soon, Cream took her position.
"Play ball!" Decoe said and Ballios pitcher prepared to pitch the ball.
"Oh Mr. Pitcher~?" Cream said and the Ballios pitcher paused mid-pitch. "Could you... maybe not throw the ball too hard? I've never played before." she said and the Ballios pitcher started blushing. "Mr. Pitcher Robot! I...like...you..." she continued and the Ballios pitcher's entire face turns beet-red, and it drops the ball.
"Ball! Batter takes first base." Decoe said and Cream ran to first base.
"Thank you, Mr. Pitcher~!" she said.
Eggman growled.
"I oughta throw you on the scrap heap!"
Soon, Knuckles hit another ball successfully and ran the bases.
"All right, Knuckles! Another home run!" Chuck said.
Sonic smirked a little remembering what he had done over the years and times he helped them.
"That means we're tied!" Amy said.
"Huh? Look, everybody!" Chris said and everyone turned to see that the bleachers were filling up with fans.
"Hey, hey! Yeah!" fan 1 said.
"Hey, you guys! Hit a homer over this way!" fan 2 said.
"Huh?" Chuck said.
"Where did all these people come from?" Albert asked.
The score stood tied at 35. Sonic bat the ball and ran to first base just as the Ballios at first base was calling to receive the ball.
Eggman growled.
"You strike out that squirt or else!"
The next batter was Chris. He shut his eyes tight as the Ballios pitcher threw a super fast ball.
"Strike one!" Decoe said.
"Oh no. What if I let the whole team down?" Chris said and Sonic watched as Chris received another strike hearing the second day being with Sonia and Manic.
He started to speed away but heard something.
"Now you, Sonia!" Gondar said.
"Back in a few!" Sonia twirled away.
"Manic..." Gondar said.
"I've been thinking - maybe they could do better without me..." Manic said watching Sonia and him speed about. "I mean, my talents just... don't exactly measure up!"
"Leaving would be a mistake, young friend. Soon you will find a talent that has been hidden. Use it to help your cause."
"What is it?"
"When the time comes, you will know."
"Strike two!" Decoe said and Sonic came back.
'I'm not having a repeat of it. The kid is going to be strong and not a quitter!' he thought.
"Time out!" he said and Chris looked up to see Sonic walking up to him. "Hey, Chris!"
"Sonic..." Chris said.
"I know you can get a hit. There's nothing to it, Chris. All you have to do is concentrate."
"...That's easy for you to say. He's pitching so fast."
"So he throwing a couple of fastballs. You can't let that get you down, pal. Just keep on tryin' and don't give up! Now get out there and do your best!"
Chris nodded.
"Okay." he said and the game continued.
"Play ball!" Decoe said.
"Sonic's right. I just have to keep trying." Chris said to himself and Sonic smiled a little then the Ballios pitcher pitched the ball. "I have to swing the bat with all my might!" he said then swung the bat so hard that his cap fell off.
He missed.
"Strike three."
"At least I tried my best."
"Chris, run!" Chuck said and he looked up in amazement to see a Ballios fielder chasing after the ball.
"Alright! It's a passed ball!"
As Sonic ran to home base, Chris slid into first base in the nick of time.
"Safe!" Decoe said.
"I did it! I got to first base!" Chris said and Sonic gave him a thumbs-up and wink as Chris' friends cheered.
Then he remembered when Manic got it right.
"Oh, it was me! I got us killed." he said.
"Yes! Your impulsiveness. Your rash actions. Your inability to work as a team! These will be your undoing, and may perhaps cause the end of your siblings!" Thelonious said.
"Just a minute, buster! Sonic may be impatient and impulsive, but he's braver than anyone I've ever met!" Sonia said.
"It is not about bravery."
"Hey! You're talkin' about one of the best Freedom Fighters there is. He saved my butt a couple of times. If you ask me, we don't need your stupid training!" Manic said.
"Ah, you defend your brother! Now, that is harmony. Strive to find this in your training, which will continue tomorrow morning. Or perhaps, before."
"Wow, you guys really stood up for me!" he said.
"Well, you saved me more than once and besides, you are my brother." Sonia said and kissed him.
"You're not gonna kiss me, are ya?"
"No way! But you are kinda cute." Manic said.
"Hey! We gonna let these cool instruments go to waste?" Sonia said.
"Remember: they only become weapons if we're in harmony!" Sonia said.
"Yo, I'm feelin' righteously harmonious. How about a little drum roll?" Manic said.
"Oh, man, all this concentrating makes my head hurt!" he said.
"Sonic?" Sonia said,
"Okay, okay. Hit it, sis!"
"Wow..."
"All right! Rock 'n' roll!"
"Crashin'!" Manic said and his drums cracked the ground opened. "Whoa, gotta love this!"
"Yo, Manic! What's the matter with you? What good's an earthquake when that thing's flying?"
"Well, so much for harmony." Sonia said.
"Oh boy, I blew it! Sorry, Manic."
"It's okay, just get us into the castle really quick!" Manic said.
"Whoa, scratch one escape route! At least we got him back."
"Hmm... he doesn't land. He just hovers! And when Manic shot that shaft of rock up at it, did you see the way it veered away?" Sonia said.
"And that would mean...?" Manic said.
"Duck!" he said.
"I think it's an air elemental." Sonia said.
"Yeah, that'd be my guess! What the heck is that?!"
"It's a creature of the air. If it touches the earth, it will be destroyed!"
"Where do you get this stuff?"
"We like to call it "school"!"
"Heh. Oh yeah! That."
"Do you think you can push a plate of earth up to hit the dragon?"
"I can try." Manic said.
"Well here's your chance. Incoming!" he said.
"Wow!"
"That pretty much sums it up."
"What now?"
He and Manic gasped.
"Oh no, we gotta get outta here!" he said and warped away. "Oh, no!"
"Aahhh!" Sonia said and warped back to the temple. "Phew!"
Thelonious chuckled.
"Young Manic, you were disappointed because the others had wonderful powers, while yours seemed small." Thelonious said.
"Yeah, I guess so." Manic said.
"Yours is the most powerful gift of all! But it must be used carefully."
"Way past cool! Manic the Earthshaker!" he said.
Then he came back and heard them cheered.
Knuckles noticed Sonic looked a little out of it.
'He must be thinking about when they were being trained.' he thought.
"Oh yeah? Those bumbling clowns! They won't make a fool out of me!" Eggman said while Bocoe appeared with a remote.
"Here you go." he said.
"Why you...!" Eggman said and pressed the button, and a Ballios detached its head.
It flew over to Sonic and fastened itself to his head.
"What's that?" Sonic wondered and Eggman and Bocoe appeared.
"Oh dear! My robot! It's malfunctioning! It'll explode any minute now! Run, Sonic! Hurry! Run away!" Eggman said.
"Sonic, what are we gonna do?" Chris asked.
"He's trying to get us to forfeit the game! I've gotta get rid of this thing quick!" Sonic said and darted all over the diamond in a vain attempt to loosen the Ballios head. "Hey, you're really hanging on!"
"Sonic!" someone and Sonic turned in the speaker's direction to see Knuckles. "Jump, Sonic! Hurry!"
"Okay!" he said and leapt into the air and Knuckles did the same. "Hey, watch it, will ya?!"
Then Knuckles punched the Ballios head off of Sonic, causing it to explode.
"Thanks! You're a lifesaver!" he said and Knuckles smiled.
Eggman started to rising up in the Eggmobile and laughed while Sonic and Knuckles landed on the ground.
"You may have beaten me at baseball, but with this shiny blue Chaos Emerald snuggled ever so safely in my pocket, I'm the real winner after all, aren't I?" he said laughing then flew away and the Ballios dropship followed.
"Now he has both the Chaos Emeralds!" Amy said.
Then all the spectators were cheering.
"All right! Great game! Yeah! What an amazing team!" they said.
"As you can see, there's been quite a turnout for this event. The game was, of course, the last to be played here at the stadium." Scarlet said and a man walked out onto the diamond then she gasped. "Could that be?"
