Spring had just begun, signifying the beginning of the year for creatures not bound by dates and clocks and calendars. It was more apparent, out here in the countryside - the thick smell of nectar and pollen filled the air, and the first flowers of the year covered trees and hillsides.

"This is an excellent place for keeping bees," Holmes said, eyeing a stream at the foot of one hill. "They will have shelter from the worst of the wind, food throughout the season, and a water source close enough for their needs, but far enough so there is little danger of flooding."

"Is it really so complex to pick a site for the bees to live?" I asked.

"Only if one wishes them to thrive, " Holmes replied, setting down his bag and unpacking now that he had selected the perfect site.

I nodded, and assisted Holmes in setting up a stand for the hive. We arranged the empty frames, then donned veils and produced a plume of acrid smoke when it was time to move the bees to their new home. They rolled sluggishly into the box, only a change in pitch in their humming showing that they were affected by the disturbance. They would adjust quickly, well cared for by a man who could think like a bee.
