Early the next day at U.A. High School the teachers were holding a meeting to discuss the discovery by Power Loader and Camille, with the latter presenting her findings. "This is what we've been able to figure out so far. At approximately 1403 an executable program was activated in the prosthetic used by the subject. This executable appears to have increased the neural interface settings to 3 times it's normal rating. We're still investigating how that was even possible by simply altering the program since the parameters of the arm should not have allowed it go that high and we can't find any mechanical changes that would have allowed it to do so. However because of this change the prosthetic interacted with the subject's Quirk at an accelerated level. The executable program also created a bridge between the neural interface and the data depository that was created by assistant Hatsume."
"Normally the subject sends neural impulses throughout her body to activate her Quirk which in turn converts her lipids into matter, simplifying the process. When her neural impulses interfaced with the neural interface, she was able to handle a significantly higher setting than most people already. Examining the data from the initial calibration prosthetic in more detail and comparing to the results of the Mark 3 arm we can now identify that her neural impulses were able to make changes to the arm itself in a similar fashion to how her Quirk creates matter from her lipids. From the calibration prosthetic we are also able to detail that it can only change within the confines of the initial design." Starting to see confused looks around the table, she elaborated.
"For example, the calibration arm already had an adaptation matrix. This allows it to change in size and coloration within certain limits. There is of course some leeway established for safety concerns. The subject was able to override these limits to make the calibration arm more compact, but still within the physical limits of the arm."
Several of those present had questions at this point, but Nezu silenced them and asked her to continue. He expected she would answer several of those shortly.
"With the Mark 3 prosthetic, when the neural interface went up and the bridge was created, it allowed her flight or fight response to interface with the neural cartography program. Normally this just controls moving the arm and using some of the other functions mentally. But in this case her fight or flight response sent a signal to the arm stating 'danger' with 'Tokoyami' set as the target. The prosthetic responded to this by accessing the database and finding the schematics for a 'weapon' to 'fight' with. Since this was being fueled by the subject's subconscious mind it identified a pistol that was in the database as a potential tool and the adaptation matrix adapted the arm to the necessary configuration."
"I thought it had to be something it could already do?" A quick question from Snipe.
"Normally yes, but the Mark 3 prosthetic took advantage of the subject's Quirk and was able to subconsciously activate it, creating the necessary components and integrating them into the adaptation matrix. Under other circumstances it would be a fascinating study. But the arm then proceeded to create the components, adjust it's angle and fire when it had the 'target' lined up. Afterwards, when the subject began to suffer emotional distress, this triggered the executable to delete itself and the bridge."
Everyone in the room turned to look at Nezu, who addressed them. "At this point, the question becomes who may have been able to install this program into the system and why. Power Loader."
"The program would have needed to be installed knowing enough about Hatsume's database to interact with it, as well as about the schematics of the arm. I-Island has about 30 people who may have access to the second half of that data. Going by the first half, the three most likely people would be myself, Professor Camille here, and Hatsume Mei. Of course Hatsume keeps her inventions in the support department so the possibility of someone getting in there exists, which means it could be the entire student body."
"Can't we just access the cameras and watch who went into the support lab and installed the program into the arm?" A good question from Midnight.
"We could but the prosthetic has wireless capabilities. It could have been done remotely."
The discussion continued as they explored possible ways for the arm to be accessed and how to investigate. Each person present was assigned their own tasks to investigate. As the meeting was finished, Nezu excused everyone to get ready for the school day, asking Camille to stay behind for a moment.
The room was empty, Nezu was by the window looking outside. "Professor Camille. When you were sent here you didn't tell us that you were associated with Yaoyorozu Momoka. Why is that?"
Camille sighed at the question, adjusting her glasses. "I didn't think it was necessary. I was being sent as a researcher and have never met Momoka's daughter before."
Nezu turned and looked at her. "I'm sure how you can see that this puts us in an uncomfortable position now."
"I understand that I may well be a suspect, and one with a motive. What are you asking of me? I'm sure I-Island can send someone else to help with this project."
"I just would like to know why you chose to come to this school."
"Why I came? That's easy, I'm the top researcher on this project and the most qualified individual to oversee it. For my experience we would have needed to send at least two others. And before you ask, no I didn't come for any personal reasons beyond that. I will admit to having a thought to using this as a way to mend my friendship with Momoka, but realized that wasn't professional. I certainly didn't expect for any of this to happen."
Nezu watched the woman's reaction, looking for any signs of deceit. He knew she was right, and that her help would be valuable to the project. "Then I would like you to stay on the project. But be aware that you are being watched. Also this information will be provided to the police, it's not something I can help."
"Then I best get back to work, if that's all?"
"Thank you Professor Camille."
"Thank you, Principal Nezu."
Momo stayed home from U.A. the next day, still undecided on what she wanted to do. After having breakfast with her mother, who was going to work remotely for the next few days, she decided a bit of exercise would help clear her head. She spent time in the Yaoyorozu home gym until it was time for lunch, this time alone as her mother was in a meeting. For the afternoon she went through the notes she had made last night. Sleep deprived as she was she found herself unable to focus when her mother came to see her.
"Momo, you have a friend here who would like to see you."
Momo turned, "Just send them away. I don't think I'm in any shape to see someone right now."
"I really think you should come and talk to him. It's Tokoyami."
Momo paused and felt a panic start to grip her. "Tokoyami, why would he be here? He must be angry with me and wants to yell at me. I really should send him away, but would that be fair to him? I need to face this, but I don't want to. Just tell him to leave, it's that easy. No don't. I have to face him." Going back and forth mentally her mother was beside her and grasped her hand.
"Momo, go and talk to him. You need to face him and apologize for what happened."
Instead of answering she got up and let her mother lead her to a sitting room. Looking inside she saw the form of Tokoyami sitting, drinking a cup of tea while waiting. Her mother nudged her forward, whispering that she would be just outside.
"Tokoyami, I'm-" Momo felt the words get stuck in her throat. How could she apologize for nearly killing him?
Tokoyami waited calmly, then seeing that Momo was struggling spoke, "Yaoyorozu, mind if I tell you about my childhood?"
Momo was confused at the question but nodded anyway, taking a seat near him. He poured her a cup of tea while starting. "This occurred when I was about 7 or 8 years old. As with many others I had only discovered my Quirk a couple years earlier and was still learning about him. One evening two of my friends and I left our homes and met up around midnight. There was an old abandoned building in the woods behind our houses and we dared each other to go there at night to investigate rumors of a ghost haunting it, bravery being important to us as kids."
Taking a sip of tea, Dark Shadow came out and listened as well. "Upon arrival, we only had one flashlight between the three of us. They allowed me to hold our precious resource as we slowly made our way in. I was in the lead while they followed behind, only for the light to suddenly go out. Turning I found that my friends had abandoned me inside at some point. Out of fear, I summoned Dark Shadow."
Tokoyami looked to his partner, who almost looked embarrassed at this point. "I later learned that was a mistake. It was the first time I had summoned him in total darkness. Dark Shadow went crazy, trying to smash the walls, throwing anything that it could. I was afraid of the darkness before, but now I was even more afraid of my own Quirk going mad."
Tokoyami paused, seemingly for dramatic effect. "When the adults found me I learned what had happened. My friends were playing a prank on me, had rigged the flashlight to go out. They intended it as a harmless joke among friends, but none of us expected my Quirk to go on a rampage. They were still in the building, both injured with bruises before they escaped and summoned the adults to aid me. Dark Shadow was calmed down when they brought the lights to bear on him."
Tokoyami turned towards Yaoyorozu, meeting her gaze. "I understand the fear that can come with our Quirks. That loss of control where we may hurt one of our friends." He touched a spot on his chest. "Midoriya learned from a girl named Hatsume what had happened with your arm, who then told me. Yaoyorozu Momo, I do not blame you for what happened. Rather I'm glad I can be here for you, to tell you that it's okay. I want to be your friend now as I wanted to before. Will you accept my friendship?"
Momo listened intently to Tokoyami's story and for the first time since it happened, she could feel. Tokoyami's story opened her heart back up, but what threw the valve wide open is him still wanting to be her friend. The tears flowed down her cheeks. She felt a comforting hand on her back, looking up and seeing that Dark Shadow was there. Tokoyami had looked away, seemingly embarrassed at the display.
After a few minutes of crying, she thanked Tokoyami and started to clean her eyes. He still kept his gaze slightly averted until she finished but seemed satisfied. "So Yaoyorozu, do you feel up to seeing the rest of the class?"
"Do you mean in school tomorrow?"
"Your mother didn't tell you? Most of 1-A is here as well as some of your friends from 1-B. She said they were in the cozy party room?"
Momo wasn't as shocked as she would have thought she would have been, and happily agreed to go meet them. Leaving the room she met her mother and told her she was sorry about her attitude before the three of them moved along.
Arriving at the cozy party room (which she later learned was as big as some people's houses) she was greeted by her friends coming up to her, asking how she was doing. It looked like everyone from 1-A (except Iida and Mineta) were here, as well as most of the girls from 1-B. Many hugs were thrown around as they dragged her in and asked how she was doing.
Mina, "I'm glad you're feeling better, Yaomomo!"
Setsuna, "I'll say, it's a lot more fun in the mornings with you around."
Momo, "I really am glad you all came. Thank you. It really helps to know you all care."
Kyoka, "Yeah, we weren't sure if we should all come or not. You won't believe this but Bakugou was the one who told us all to shut up after class today and dragged us to see you."
Setsuna, "Yeah, he even dropped by 1-B and told us we were coming too. Well, he said to follow him but the rest filled in the blanks."
Momo was surprised and turned to see Bakugou in the corner. Meeting his gaze, he came over towards them. "What do you expect? How can I prove that I'm the best hero if you won't come back? Dropping out? Not a chance. I need to beat you first!"
The room went quiet at Bakugou's words, Ochaco the first to break the silence. "Wait, Yaomomo. Were you going to drop out?"
Momo felt the pressure of everyone staring at her until Bakugou yelled again. "Not while I haven't beat her. I'm still angry at you, Ponytail!"
She couldn't believe his words! She wanted him to stay so he could beat her? "You can't be serious, Bakugou."
The blond smiled and got right in her face, the others worried that he might hit her. Midoriya tried to pull him back, "Kacchan, I think that's enough."
"SHUT UP, SHITTY DEKU!" He didn't even turn back, still meeting the now standing Momo's gaze. "That performance against birdhead was insulting. You were better during that first hero battle training where I threw you out the wall. I've seen you use your Quirk, you're good at it. And you've got the brains to use it. THAT MEANS I NEED TO KICK YOUR ASS ALONG WITH DEKU AND ICYHOT!" He exploded both his hands to emphasize his point.
Rage filled Momo at his words. "You, Bakugou, are an arrogant jerk whose opinion of himself needs to be taken down a peg. As the class representative of 1-A I will make sure you get that lesson. Do you understand me? That and fixing that language of yours."
Bakugou smile as Momo met his challenge, "I'm glad to hear it. Winning the sports festival with that lame victory still has me irritated."
Momo paused, her anger passing and taking on a look of confusion. "Oh wait, so you won the festival? In fact, I don't know what happened after, well after."
All the tension left the room, several people bursting out into laughter. Bakugou himself couldn't help it, "Okay, you're fine. I'm going home now. I expect to see you tomorrow." With that he showed himself out even as everything continued.
Momoka showed up a few minutes after Bakugou left, letting them know that they were welcomed to stay for dinner if they liked. A few people called home and contacted parents, while others went ahead and left. Momo learned during that time what had happened to Iida's brother and how he had to leave the tournament. Saying her farewells to her friends, Momo returned to her room and laid down, feeling the past two days catching up to her. A last visit from her mom found that Momo had already fallen asleep.
Hatsume found herself back on U.A. grounds near 10 that night. With everything that had happened she was banned from any overnight activities. However she had left her bag in Power Loader's lab with her bus pass and house keys. She had already encountered Hound Dog on her way here and he allowed her to go get them while he continued his patrol.
On her way, she saw that the lab door was opened. Surprised at the lack of security she started to approach when she heard movement. Hatsume ducked down behind a trash can. "Perhaps this is the perpetrator that Power Loader is looking for! If I can find out who it is, I can continue to work on my babies overnight again! Come to mama, show me who you are?"
Hatsume focused on her Quirk, Zoom, and magnified the doorway. She watched as a figure came out of the lab, though with the lighting she couldn't make out much. Hatsume adjusted her position, accidently bumping the can with her boot and drawing attention to the target. She had glanced down and then back up, only to suddenly find her eyes unable to focus on anything, zooming like crazy. Pain shot through as she suddenly felt vertigo, hearing the target start to run away. And just like that her eyes came back into focus and the pain was gone. Hatsume started to stand up when suddenly an explosion, larger than anything she had done before, rocked the lab. The force of the explosion threw Hatsume away and crashed into the far wall, losing consciousness.
