As Mac woke up, he realized he was lying on something soft. He opened his eyes and looked around him. He thought it looked like he was in a…cave? He sat up and looked around some more. He was in a bed now but he was still dressed in the loin cloth. He touched the wall and sure enough, it was rock and the floor was dirt…or maybe it was a little rock too. He realized there was another room that had a shower, tub, sink and toilet in it and everything else that he needed.
Mac got up and walked into that bathroom and then walked back into the other room. There was even another small room hewn out in the rock that was made into a closet of sorts. However, there was nothing in there but loin cloths. He walked around the other side and saw an entrance that was bars like had been in the cage. He went to the bars. "Hey!" he yelled, but that hurt his ribs a little. He did not think his rib was broken but it was sure sore and his nose was sore too, not to mention another place.
Sarah came down the hallway. "Do you like your new place?" she asked.
"Where am I?" Mac asked. "What do you think you're doing?"
"You ask too many questions. We'll take care of you. You don't have to worry, and if you want to go outside, you're entrance is right over there." Sarah pointed toward the other end of the corridor that Mac was in.
"Let me out of here."
"No."
Sarah left the hallway. Mac looked around and walked down the corridor and found the other door which opened, and he found that there was a big area outside with a stone table that had benches and a few trees, and there was even a swing under one of them. There was a small stream and a pool in the middle that had koi fish in it and was surrounded by hosta lilies and ferns and even had some water lilies in the pond.
Mac walked out there and saw that the place was hewn out in the rock and it was surrounded by walls. However, there were stones that went up. Mac climbed the rocks up to the top of the wall on the right side, but when he looked down, he knew why Sarah did not care for him being able to climb up there. He was on a cliff…a high cliff. He was sure he was not in New York now. He could see the ocean out there and it was a straight down drop. He looked around him and he was right. The place he was in was hewn out in the side of a mountain. He climbed back down and sat down in the swing. He was stuck. He was sure there was no way out this time. How would they ever find him?
Mac walked back into his…habitat. He frowned at the idea of that. She was treating him like an animal. There was even a bookshelf hewn out in the wall of the corridor that had all sorts of books in it and there was a sofa to sit on in the bedroom. Mac walked back into the room and just stood there a moment. He had no idea where he was now. He wondered if this would be the rest of his life. He went over to the bed and lay down and pulled the covers around him. It made him feel cold to think of being in this cage the rest of his life. What if those two people out there died? He would have to starve to death?
Jo was pacing back and forth in the conference room. "There has to be some way to find this woman," she said. "Sarah might not even be her real name!"
"Caldwell probably didn't have much contact with her," Russ said. "He said she was someone he had met while he was working for the senator?"
Jo looked at Russ. "He did."
"Maybe the senator knows her, but I think someone besides you should find out."
"Or his daughter might know her too."
"Right. I'll get on that and find out what they know."
"Do that."
Jo thought that was a little ray of hope. There had been no sign of Mac so far or the Avalanche. She supposed a woman that wealthy could afford to do about anything and hire people to help her. She went to the computer lab to see if Adam had found anything else. "I have been studying the people who have been on hunting expeditions," Adam said. "There was this one couple who went on one about two years ago and their plane crashed in Africa. They left behind a daughter, and I suppose she inherited everything from them. Her name is 'Saranda'." Adam looked at Jo. "She could use the name Sarah as short."
Jo stared at the computer screen a moment. "You're right," she said. "Find out where she lives and every house or mansion she may have."
"I'm on it."
Jo went into the lab and let the others know that Adam was getting close to finding a suspect. "It's been two days and there is no sign of him," Lindsey said. "Maybe that means he's still alive."
"I'm hoping," Jo replied. She could not imagine finding Mac's body somewhere. "He has to be."
"There was nothing in the garage," Danny said. "Nothing that would lead to anything."
Jo's phone rang. "Danville," she answered.
"Jo, we have a lead on the Avalanche," Don said.
"Where?"
"It's in an old warehouse a few blocks from the precinct. Some workers went in there because that building is about to be reopened and they found the Avalanche there. Obviously the GPS has been deactivated."
Jo got the address and they all headed out. When they arrived, they found the Avalanche just sitting there as though it had been parked there. "There's no one here," Don said. "We searched the whole place."
"Let's get busy going over this truck," Jo said.
They searched the truck and found the handcuffs that Mac had been bound with, and Mac's coat was still in the truck. When they had all they could find like that, they transported the truck back to the lab to give it a thorough inspection. They vacuumed it and fumed it for prints and then they were up to the lab to analyze what they had found.
Jo paced back and forth in the lab while the others were working on the evidence. "You're going to wear a hole in the floor if you keep that up," Sheldon said.
"Oh, this is no time for jokes," Jo declared. "He got into this trouble trying to help me."
"Hey, now, let's not start blaming anyone for this," Danny said. "This is not your fault."
"I was just trying to lighten the mood," Sheldon said.
"I'm sorry for snapping at you," Jo replied. "I'm just nervous."
"These fingerprints definitely match some of the ones from that paperwork that Caldwell had," Lindsey announced. "There are Mac's fingerprints too."
"There's nothing in this that was vacuumed out," Sheldon said. "Just mostly dirt and a few particles of sand and even some carpet fibers that came from somewhere besides the Avalanche. They are red."
"So someone with red carpet in their house kidnapped Mac," Jo said as she began pacing again. "Sand particles?"
"Yes. Just regular old sand, nothing special about it. Could be found at any beach. The dirt is just found here in New York."
"Oh, there has to be something!"
Just then, Adam walked in. "Okay," he said. "I've found out about this Saranda Monaghan. She inherited everything of her parents' because she was the only child. Her father used to take her on the hunting trips, but she was not with them when they crashed of course. She has a home here in New York, one in Los Angeles and one in Italy."
Jo looked at the information that Adam had. "Italy?" she asked.
"Yes. Positano, Italy."
"Let's just hope she didn't take him there."
"The handcuffs have the same prints on them as the papers too," Danny said. "Mac's coat didn't have anything on it that was unusual."
Jo's phone rang. "Danville," she answered.
"Jo," Russ said. "I talked to the senator. He says he wouldn't help us if our lives depended on it, and not for Detective Taylor either, and he said if we bother his daughter, he would sue us for harassment."
Jo could not believe what she just heard. "You 'bother' his daughter anyway!" she said. "If he wants to sue us let him go ahead, and he can explain to the court why he wouldn't help try to save Mac's life."
"Alright but you know how things work."
"Things are going to work different this time."
Jo ended the call and blew out a loud breath. "I guess that wasn't what you wanted to hear," Danny said.
"No it wasn't," Jo replied. "How can someone be so inconsiderate of someone's life?"
"Angry people don't think beyond their own situation sometimes."
"Well, he will when I get done."
"I have the address of Saranda Monaghan's home in Italy," Adam said.
Jo looked at the address. "Someone has to go over there," she said.
They were all silent a moment. "We can't go as police," Jo told them. "We have to go as friends and we won't be protected by the government."
"I'll go," Don volunteered.
"So will I," Danny agreed. "We can go over there and get him out and let them know that this woman had him held captive if that's what's going on."
"We should check out her places here before that though," Jo said. "We'll go to the one here in New York first and then we will check out the one in L.A. Let's hope we find him here."
Mac knew the woman was trying to get him into despair and depression. He went outside and looked around the place he was in and tried to see the beauty of it. He looked at the koi in the pond. They were very beautiful fish of all sorts of bright colors. Mac sat down beside the pond and watched the fish as he thought of the situation he was in. He supposed it could be worse. She could be torturing him. He was glad she was not doing that and he knew his team was good and they would figure it out sooner or later. He hoped it would be sooner. He looked up at the dark blue sky. There was no way to know where he was even though he had seen out, he could not see anything but the water below and mountains. The place he was in hung right out over the ocean almost. He knew no one would be able to see him where he was unless a plane flew over. He supposed it was a perfect place to keep a prisoner if one did not want them to ever be seen.
Mac stood up and walked around the pond. He could not stand being here in his own thoughts with nothing else. He was used to a lot of activity around him and used to thinking about cases and what he wanted to do to solve a murder. Now, here he was trapped in this place with nothing but himself and a bunch of fish. He climbed up the rocks again and looked out of the place. It was definitely a steep drop down there. He looked back toward the cave he was living in. He could not even get up on the roof of it either. He looked out across the ocean…or at least, he thought it was the ocean. He stared a moment and realized he could see something out there. An island? He sat down on the top of the wall. He had no hope except his team.
Jo and the others were on their way to Saranda Monaghan's New York home. They stood and stared at it a moment. "How does someone afford something like this?" Danny asked.
"I don't know," Don replied. "But they're not making my salary."
"Come on," Jo said.
They walked up to the door and rang the doorbell which sounded quite loud in the place. They did not hear anything so Jo rang the doorbell again. Soon, they heard someone unlocking the door. The door creaked as it was opened. "Wow, you would think they could afford some oil for that door," Don remarked quietly to Danny.
Danny tried not to laugh as Jo gave them a warning look. There was a man at the door dressed in a black suit with a white shirt and a black bowtie. "Yes," he said.
"This is the home of Saranda Monaghan, right?" Jo asked.
"Yes."
"We have a warrant to search this house."
The man looked at the warrant that Jo had given him. "Miss Monaghan is not here," he said.
"You work here, right?"
"Yes."
"Then you have authority to let someone in?"
"Yes."
"That's good enough."
Jo and the others went into the house. It was lavishly decorated to say the least. "I think our sofa at home is just as good as that one," Danny whispered to Lindsey.
"Danny," she whispered.
"I'm just saying."
They looked around the living room but there was obviously nothing there to see so they spread out into the rest of the house. Danny and Lindsey went up the stairs. "Just look at all this," Danny said. "Does she live alone?"
"Maybe she likes to have friends over," Lindsey replied.
"Why would anyone have a house like this if they were only going to have one kid?"
"Oh, Danny."
"You just don't want to look at anything from another angle."
"And what angle is that?"
"Never mind."
Jo and Don were downstairs. They looked in each room on that floor until they came to a locked door. "I wonder what's in there," Don said.
"Go and get that butler and tell him to come and unlock this door," Jo replied.
Don went back to where the butler was and brought him to the door. "Open this door," Don said.
The butler opened the door and Jo and Don were surprised to see a bunch of trophy animals in the room. "Wow," Don said as he looked around the room. "I guess this is the trophy room."
"I guess," Jo replied.
They walked on into the room and looked around to make sure there were no more doors that connected to the room but there were none. Jo stopped in the middle of the room where there were indentions in the carpet like something had been sitting there until recently. Don looked at what Jo was looking at. "Something was here," Jo said.
Don went to the door and called the butler in. "What was sitting here?" he asked.
"Two cages," the butler answered. "Miss Monaghan keeps live animals sometimes."
"Live animals?"
"Yes."
"Where are they now?" Jo asked.
"She took them to another location, a better location. She has a resort where she has habitats for them."
"And what kind of animals were here?"
"One was a tiger and the other was an ape."
"An ape?" Don asked. "What kind of ape?"
"A Chimp. Noisy things."
"So what did she do? Capture them?" Jo asked.
"Of course. She thought they were too pretty to kill."
"An ape?" Don asked sarcastically. "Oh, yeah, they're really beautiful."
Jo stood up and took one step toward the butler. She showed him a picture of Mac. "Have you seen this man?" she asked.
"Should I have?" the butler asked.
"Hey!" Don said. "She asked you a question, and you need to give her a straight answer!"
The butler folded his arms. "I only work here. I don't see everyone who comes in or out of this house."
"Why don't you?" Jo asked. "I thought you were the butler. Don't you open the door for people?"
"Miss Monaghan has guests even when I am not here. I 'do' have days off."
"He's giving us the run-around," Don declared. "Let me run him in."
"I think that's a good idea," Jo said. "Let him see the inside of the precinct and maybe it will make him want to cooperate if he's taken out of his cushy life."
"Come on, Jeeves," Don said and took the butler out.
Jo took pictures of the indentations in the carpeting. She had a feeling that Mac had been in this room. She wondered if that woman had been keeping him in a cage and where was he now? She looked around some more and noticed some stains on the floor. As she inspected it, she realized it looked like blood. She took a sample and sprayed it, and sure enough, it was blood. There was another small sample and she took a sample of that too. She hoped one of these samples was from Mac since there was not much there. Maybe he had fought for his life.
Danny and Lindsey came down the stairs to show Jo what they had found. "She has a whole arsenal up there of all kinds of weapons," Danny said. "She even has dart guns. This must be how she captures animals…and maybe people."
"Maybe that was how she controlled Mac," Lindsey said. "It's a small dart and there were bottles of sedatives to use in them."
"If he was here, where is he now?" Jo asked.
They were all wondering the same thing. "Maybe we can get that butler to tell us," Don said. "He's on his way."
"Good. Let's get back there and analyze this stuff we found and find out what that guy knows. We have to find Mac."
