Author's Note: Uh-oh, we're done with the peyote. For real, I promise. Back to the real world with just a little story left. I've posted these last few chapters a bit close together so double check that you're not skipping anything :) Hope you enjoy...
INT. BRENNAN'S APARTMENT - MORNING
We re-join Brennan, on her couch, her eyes just open.
Dr. Adakai, a handsome Native American man with long dark
hair swept back into a ponytail, sits in her arm chair as he
reads a copy of Bone of Contention.
Seeing her stir, he sets the book down.
DR. ADAKAI
Dr. Brennan, welcome back.
She sits up, groggy, rubbing her eyes.
DR. ADAKAI
How do you feel?
BRENNAN
I...
She looks around.
BRENNAN
That was a very vivid dream.
DR. ADAKAI
The peyote trance is unlike anything
you would experience while simply
asleep.
BRENNAN
Or awake.
She shakes her head.
DR. ADAKAI
Don't be so sure about that. The
ancestors who run the dream world
created during the peyote ritual, they
can steer and direct-if that is what
you seek. Not just in the dream world,
but they can guide reality, also.
BRENNAN
Guide reality?
DR. ADAKAI
Guide you.
BRENNAN
I dreamed I woke up once already. What
if this is also a continuation of the
trance?
DR. ADAKAI
Only time will tell, Dr. Brennan.
A banging at the door interrupts the conversation.
BOOTH
Bones?! Hey, Bones! You up?
The knocking continues.
BRENNAN
Excuse me.
Dr. Adakai keeps a watchful eye on her as she stands, pausing
to see if she is steady on her feet. Content that she won't
fall over, she walks to the door.
She opens it, just barely, to Booth. He stands on the other
side in his weekend gear: dark t-shirt and jeans with a dark
army-style jacket. He has a brown paper bag in one hand and
coffee in the other. He also has what looks like a stack of
papers tucked under his arm.
BRENNAN
What's wrong? Has there been a murder?
He hands her the bag and the coffee.
BOOTH
There ya go. Bagel and coffee just for
you. And, yeah, there's been a murder,
all right. A total butchering. Of the
truth.
He holds up Sweets' manuscript.
BOOTH
Did you get your copy yet?
BRENNAN
No...
DR. ADAKAI
Excuse me, Dr. Brennan, but, actually,
an FBI courier did drop this off.
He pops in behind her with a manila envelope. Brennan opens
the door wider so the three of them can talk.
BRENNAN
Oh, thank you, Dr. Adakai.
She trades him the bag and coffee for the envelope. He
obliges politely.
BRENNAN
(to Booth)
It appears I was incorrect.
BOOTH
Yeah... and you are not the only one.
He holds up and shakes the manuscript. Brennan takes her copy from
the envelope and flips it open. Booth eyes Dr. Adakai.
Dr. Adakai returns a curious look. Booth puts his manuscript
back under his arm. After standing in uncomfortable silence a
few more seconds, Booth can't take it.
BOOTH
(to Dr. Adakai)
Hey. Seeley Booth.
He sticks his hand out. Dr. Adakai looks down at his full
hands then back up at Booth. He offers a nod instead. Booth
drops his hand.
DR. ADAKAI
Adistan Adakai.
Brennan continues to read, speaking distractedly:
BRENNAN
Dr. Adakai stopped by to...
She is distracted, reading the manuscript, and doesn't
finish. Dr. Adakai smiles uncomfortably.
DR. ADAKAI
I stopped by to share some discourse
regarding an upcoming paper. Today.
This morning. I just got here.
She glances up at the obvious lie then looks to Booth.
BRENNAN
We worked together many years ago on a
project to link the Navajo and Apache
tribes using the remains of-
BOOTH
Got it, Bones. Anthropology.
Skeletons. Yada, yada, yada.
She glances at Dr. Adakai, but he's not offended. She is.
BRENNAN
It's rude to yada, yada, yada
someone's entire life's work, Booth.
BOOTH
Well, it's not your entire life's
work. 'Cause, you know, a lot of your
work... that you do... in your life...
it's with me... and with my life's
work... so.. maybe it's actually you
who's being dismissive, hm?
Her brow furrows not able or willing to follow his train of
thought. She starts to speak, but instead ignores him by
looking back down into the manuscript.
DR. ADAKAI
It's Agent Booth, right?
BOOTH
Sure is.
DR. ADAKAI
I can assure you, Agent Booth, I did
not come here today to disrupt the
work of either of your lives.
BOOTH
Yeah, you keep saying today, but the
funny thing is, the courier dropped off
the manuscript last night so...
Booth shrugs. Brennan again looks at Dr. Adakai. He raises
his eyebrows. He tried. Booth doesn't like it.
BOOTH
(to Brennan)
Anyway, you should keep reading, hm?
And then you're going to want to join
me Monday morning when we go see
Sweets about it. So, you know,
hopefully you two'll have wrapped up
your "discourse" by then.
He turns to go.
BRENNAN
Wait, Booth.
He turns back.
BOOTH
It's all good, Bones, okay? Just...
get to reading. I'll see ya tomorrow.
He backs out of the doorway, pulling the door closed. Brennan
turns back to face Dr. Adakai.
DR. ADAKAI
I apologize, Dr. Brennan.
BRENNAN
No, Dr. Adakai, you should not be
apologizing. You've given me a gift. A
perspective on my circumstances which
my rational mind could never have
formed without the peyote ritual.
DR. ADAKAI
I meant for making Agent Booth
unnecessarily jealous.
Brennan sighs, walking back into her living room. Dr. Adakai
follows, setting the bag and coffee cup on the coffee table.
When they are seated again, her on the couch and him in the
chair, he speaks:
DR. ADAKAI
I know you went into the ritual with a
specific question in mind.
Brennan glances down at the manuscript.
DR. ADAKAI
Perhaps the answer lies in Agent
Booth?
Brennan looks up at her friend.
BRENNAN
How can you conclude that when you
don't know the specific question for
which I sought guidance or any of the
details concerning what I experienced
during the ritual itself?
Dr. Adakai shrugs. His smile shows good humor.
DR. ADAKAI
You said his name. Many times. Many.
Brennan glances down.
DR. ADAKAI
This is no coincidence.
She looks back up.
DR. ADAKAI
I see you have some reading to do, but
I would like for you to otherwise
relax for the rest of the weekend. And
reflect. If you would like to speak
about your experience, please call me,
but the messages you received should
feel clear. You should not fear them
or the repercussions of following the
path laid out for you.
She considers this.
BRENNAN
That will not be easy.
DR. ADAKAI
I understand.
BRENNAN
But I feel that I should try.
Dr. Adakai smiles encouragingly at her.
FADE OUT
