Chapter 13: Let's Set It Off

"So, how do I look?" May asked.

May and Kiara just arrived at school on Saturday for the Homecoming Dance. The gang is already all there, getting beverages, dancing, and talking.

Drew was at the entrance of the cafeteria waiting for May to enter through the doors. Kiara decided to leave them to talk and she ran to find her friends. Drew stayed speechless at the sight of May.

May's dress isn't much, but they always catch Drew's eye. His mouth is slightly open. May has on her green dress that matches Drew's eyes. She has on her black waistband with the Scepter Of Love in it. She has on black dressy shoes, pink lipstick, green heart earrings, and green eyeshadow.

"Umm...Drew?" May questioned.

Drew shook his head, snapping out of his trance. "Hm?"

"How do I look?" May asked shyly.

"You look…" Drew started. "...beautiful."

May blushed at the compliment. "Thank you. You look nice too."

Drew is just wearing a black suit with a green tie, and black dress shoes.

"Thanks. So, let's join the party." Drew said, holding out his hand to May.

May smiled and took Drew's hand. They interlocked their fingers together and started walking hand-in-hand towards the dance floor. May looked around and admired the decorations. (Just think of party decorations that are neon colors and they even glow in the dark.)

"The party looks good." May said.

"It sure does." Drew agreed.

May and Drew sat down at a table.

"So, this is your first Homecoming with an actual date this time." Drew said.

"Mm hm."

"Are you excited?" Drew asked.

"Absolutely!" May answered happily. "I'm so glad you asked me."

"You're my girlfriend, so of course I asked you." Drew said. "I plan on making the most of our Senior year while we're together. And this is the first step." Drew said, looking at the dance floor.

May followed Drew's gaze to the people on the dance floor, dancing with their dates to the DJ's music. "It's a little dull, don't you think?" May asked.

Drew looked at May. "What?"

May looked at Drew and smiled. "I think we could spruce up this party. What do you say?"

After a moment, Drew smiled and nodded. "Let's do it."

May stood up and walked onto the dance floor. The people parted and let her pass. May stood in the center. "Hey DJ!" May called. The music stopped and the DJ looked at May. Everyone in the cafeteria looked at May as well. "Give me a beat!"

The DJ smiled and gave May a thumbs up. He started playing a certain karaoke song through the speakers.

(This song is "Set it Off" from Descendants. Watch the music video to see what the dance is like in this chapter.)

The people started dancing again to the music. May started nodding her head to the beat. "Oh yeah. Oh yeah yeah. Let's set it off. Oh yeah yeah. You can make it happen." May added, turning around to face Drew who's still sitting at the table.

"Ohay, ohay hey!" All students cheered together as Drew stood up.

Drew started walking towards May while singing. "Kings and Queens, it's our time to rise. Write the book, the story of our lives, this is us taking back the night."

"Ohay, Ohay." Everyone said together. Drew stopped walking and faced his body to the left, his head is looking at May, and his right arm is stretched out to May.

May started walking to Drew, smiling brightly, and singing. "Break the spell, we were born this way." May took Drew's hand and he twirled her. "Be yourself, forget the DNA, everybody raise your hands and say."

"Ohay, Ohay." Everyone said again.

The dancing continued while Misty started singing from a different area on the dance floor. "Sound the alarm, get on your feet. Let's set it off and rock this beat." Misty is dancing with Ash. "Dance till your heart is wild and free. Ooh, oh, oh."

At a different area of the dance floor, Dawn is dancing with Paul. "Feeling the power, let it all out." Dawn sang. "Like what you see in the mirror, shout. We got the keys, the kingdom's ours. Ooh, oh, oh."

"Ohay, ohay hey." Everyone cheered again.

"Let's set it off. Oh yeah." The gang all sang. "Start a chain reaction, never let it stop. Let's set it off. Oh yeah. You can make it happen with everything you got. Let's set it off."

"Get ready, set it off." Everyone chanted. "We got to set it off. Get ready, set it off. We got to set it off. Ohay, ohay hey."

At a corner of the cafeteria, Kiara is sitting with her friends, watching the dancing. Ash and Gary go to their table though and Ash starts singing. "It's time to set this thing off, let's make it happen now." Ash sang as he and Gary sat on chairs on both sides of Kiara. Kiara looked at Ash. "I'mma make my own future, ignore the rumors, show 'em how passion sound." Ash held out his hand for Kiara to take it. Kiara placed her hand in Ash's and stood up with Ash. They walked around the table to Kiara's friends. "They all told me I should back down. Judgin' me cause of my background." Kiara smiled at her friends and Ash released her hand. Ash and Gary then left back to the dance floor and Kiara took her friends hands and they went to go dance. "Thinkin' 'bout changing my path now. I ain't goin' out like that now." Ash left to go to Misty.

Gary's date, Leaf, started walking towards Gary while singing. "Feeling the power, let it all out." Gary looked to his left and saw Leaf. "Like what you see in the mirror, shout." Gary took Leaf's hand and they walked further towards the center of the dance floor. "We got the keys, the kingdom's ours. Ooh, oh, oh."

"Ohh yeah." May sang.

"Let's set it off. Oh yeah." The gang all sang. "Start a chain reaction, never let it stop. Let's set it off. Oh yeah. You can make it happen with everything you got. Let's set it off."

"Get ready, set it off." Everyone chanted, facing their dates. "We got to set it off. Get ready, set it off. We got to set it off. Get ready, set it off. We got to set it off. Get ready to set it off."

Drew leaned in closer to May, using his right hand to tuck strands of hair behind May's ear. "3, 2, 1, uh." The DJ said as May and Drew's faces got closer to each other. They were about to kiss when May swiftly turned her head to the right, avoiding Drew's kiss when the DJ said "uh". May and Drew separated and ran in opposite directions. May went left and Drew went to the right off of the dance floor.

The dancing continued for this instrumental section of the song. May and Drew both ran towards the stage once they got off of the dance floor. They both went up the stairs of the stage and walked to the front and center of the stage. They're facing the people dancing and Drew takes May's hand in his.

"Ohh yeah." May sang.

"Let's set it off. Oh yeah." Everyone sang as Drew turned his full body to face May. May faced Drew and they continued singing while staring into each other's eyes. "Start a chain reaction, never let it stop. Let's set it off. Oh yeah." Drew twirled May. He then took her other hand and they continued dancing on stage while singing with everyone else. "You can make it happen with everything you got. Let's set it off."

May and Drew stopped dancing and everyone else continued. "Get ready, set it off." Everyone chanted together. Drew wrapped his arm around May's back, holding her close to him. May is gently touching Drew's chest area with both hands and they're staring into each other's eyes. "We got to set it off. Get ready, set it off. We got to set it off." Everyone finished chanting, finishing the song and the dance.

The cafeteria soon erupted into applause and cheers. They're all looking at May and Drew and applauding.

May realizes the position she's in. Her hands are on Drew's chest. She blushed and quickly took her hands off of Drew, looking away from him. Drew released May's back and took one of her hands.

May looked up at Drew and smiled. They started walking off the stage. The applause died down and the DJ started playing another song. The couples started dancing again.

"Well, that was fun." Drew said. May and Drew are currently walking towards the back of the cafeteria where their table is.

"You liked that performance?" May asked.

Drew smirked. "I liked it because I could pull you close to me."

May blushed at Drew's words. "Umm...I...that's...umm…" May struggled to respond.

Drew chuckled. "I will say that you're amazing, June."

"Huh?"

"You can always put smiles on everyone's faces." Drew said. "And I like that about you."

May laughed nervously. "Thanks."

They stopped walking at the end of the dance floor. They faced each other. "How about a dance?" Drew asked.

"Umm...sure." May answered shyly.

A slower and more romantic song started playing in the speakers. "Perfect timing, am I right?" Drew said, taking the position for a slow dance.

May blushed and got into position. They started dancing to the song with the many other couples dancing as well. "You're right. Perfect timing." May said.

They're staring into each other's eyes.

"Drew, thank you." May said.

"For?"

"Showing me a great time tonight." May answered.

Drew smiled. "You're welcome."

Drew's smile faded when he thought about Devon and wanting May to finally tell him the truth. May looked at Drew in confusion.

"Is something wrong?" May asked.

("Okay. This time, let's get right to the point.") Drew thought.

"Why are you lying to me?" Drew asked.

"Lying? What do you mean?"

"About Devon." Drew said. "You've been lying to me about him."

May knows exactly what Drew is talking about. "W-what do you mean?" She stuttered.

"Besides holding your hand during the Pep Rally, he's tried to do other things to you before, hasn't he?"

"I-I...umm…"

"Why have you been lying to me?" Drew asked again.

"What makes you say that?"

"You stutter when you're nervous about something. Maybe it's because you don't want me to know the truth about Devon and what he tried on you. And also...I saw him talking to you one day in this city and he held out a rose to you."

"I...how do you…?"

"I was going to visit you when I saw you and Devon talking." Drew answered May's unfinished question. "I saw him hold out a rose to you."

"Wait a minute...you were eavesdropping on us?"

"Yes." Drew answered without hesitation. "I was spying on you two, but it was because I wanted to make sure that he didn't try to be with you. You can understand that, right?"

May nodded. "I guess that's fine. About the rose…"

"All you needed to tell me was that you didn't accept it and that you rejected him. I wouldn't be mad at you."

"I…" May started. "I'm sorry, Drew...I thought you would've gotten the wrong idea if I mentioned the rose...and so I avoided telling you. I don't want to hurt our relationship."

"And it's not hurt." Drew said. "I just wanted the truth from you. That's why I wanted to talk about Devon that other day and why I asked you after the Pep Rally if he tried anything before that day. I just wanted you to tell me the truth."

"I'm so sorry, Drew." May said. "And...I guess I'll also tell you that...some other day, Devon asked me out on a date."

"He what?" Drew asked incredulously. "When was this?"

"It was last week. I was in the choir room, practicing my solo for the play and he walked in. We talked at the piano and he just...asked me out. To a café."

"And what did you say?"

"Well...I said that I can't because I have a boyfriend. He was also really surprised at that statement. But then I just told him your name, because he asked for it, and then I left after saying that we should just forget that he even asked me out."

With what May said, Drew found himself smiling. May looked at him in confusion.

"Might I ask why you're smiling?" May asked.

"It's because you rejected him. Twice! Technically three times, because of the hand-holding." Drew said. "But I'm just...so lucky to have someone like you in my life."

May blushed. "I feel the same way about you."

"Now, please talk to me next time, okay?" Drew asked. "I want us to get closer like you want us to. Meaning that we shouldn't have to hide something like that from each other."

"Okay, Drew…" May said, slightly smiling. "You're not mad at me, right?"

"There's nothing to be mad about." Drew said. "You rejected him three times because you love me. Why would I ever be mad at that?"

May smiled and got closer to Drew. She wrapped her arms around Drew's neck, embracing him. Drew returned the hug by wrapping his arms around her back and head. They stop dancing and enjoy each other's warmth.

"I love you, Drew." May said.

"I love you too."

They released each other and stared into each other's eyes, smiling. After a moment of silence, May decided to step closer to Drew again and tip-toe slightly, moving her face to the left. She placed a kiss on Drew's right cheek. Drew was shocked at first, but then he just smiled. May backed away from Drew.

"You're full of surprises, aren't you?" Drew asked, smiling.

"I guess if you say I am, then it's true." May answered, giggling a little.
